00:00Let's bring on Daryl Ryder. I'm sure he's going to be a bright ray of sunshine for us.
00:03Daryl is brought to you by...
00:05Shibon Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
00:07Hello, Daryl.
00:09I'm so relieved that the process was on point last night for the Cavs.
00:12I told you. Here we go. He's just a great big bowler, you know what.
00:16Here we are. Come on. Let's hear it.
00:20I've had enough of process to last me for lifetimes.
00:23Well, I got a special treat for you, Daryl.
00:25I thought our process was right.
00:27You're going to hear it over and over again. The process was right.
00:29Our process was right tonight.
00:30Throughout the entire game, our process was right.
00:32Could easily stole game one. I thought our process was right tonight.
00:36I think getting away from the process is... It happened.
00:39Our process was right.
00:40It was definitely the right process.
00:42That part of the process is on us.
00:44Process was right.
00:46For what it's worth, I do think the process was right.
00:49Well, they couldn't hit a shot, Daryl.
00:50Yeah, I know. They had a lot of wide-open looks and couldn't throw it into the ocean standing on
00:55the beach last night.
00:56And that's why game one stings so bad.
00:59And, no, you didn't have an opportunity to steal one there, Kenny.
01:04You were asleep at the switch and you blew it.
01:07Let's not act like you would have shocked the world by taking game one.
01:13No, you shocked the world by blowing game one, being up 22 with less than eight minutes to play.
01:17So, yeah, I mean, I kind of feel like last night was a playoff schedule loss for the Cavaliers.
01:24I didn't think that they were going to win the game to begin with.
01:26It was my worst fear realized.
01:28New York shot the basketball much better than they did in game one.
01:32The Cavaliers ended up shooting the ball worse than they did in game one.
01:36And, in fact, now this is five quarters plus a five-minute overtime in which the Cavaliers shooting has basically
01:45vanished.
01:45So they've got to find their shot going into game three Saturday night.
01:50I still like their chances to go back to New York tied at two, much like the Pistons series.
01:55But if they shoot the way they did last night, this is going to be a quick series.
02:01There's no doubt, Daryl, that shots need to fall.
02:04I mean, you're seeing Josh Hart hit the shots that he's hitting.
02:07But, you know, we haven't had those type of looks.
02:10We had great looks in the first half.
02:12But at no point in these playoffs have we had the looks that Josh Hart just got.
02:15And I get it.
02:16You know, you have to pick your poison against the better teams.
02:19You're going to have to give up something.
02:20But to not even have guys flying out, not have real rotations, not being able to fight through screens, giving
02:26up the switches they've given.
02:28And now these half-hearted non-double teams at the top, you're not really turning them over.
02:34I just think you've got to do more than just get up there and say we're not hitting shots.
02:39That doesn't pass muster at this stage of the playoffs.
02:41Well, here's the other thing, too.
02:43This was not a result of a sloppy exhibition of basketball by the Cavaliers last night, either.
02:48I mean, they actually had one of their better games, and this is sad to say, but it's been the
02:52reality.
02:53They only had eight turnovers last night, which for them, I mean, they have eight turnovers in a quarter, let
02:58alone for four quarters.
02:59So they played a relatively clean game last night.
03:04It felt like after what Jalen Brunson did to James Harden, the result was, okay, anyone but Brunson last night.
03:12And then everyone but Brunson contributed for the Knicks is, you know, they had four guys score at least 18
03:21points in that win.
03:23And, you know, Josh Hart had that big explosion there in the third quarter, part of that 18-0 Knicks
03:29run.
03:29And once again, another big run from the Knicks in which Kenny Atkinson failed to stop the bleeding.
03:36Another big run by the Knicks in which the Cavaliers were helpless to slow it down.
03:42So, you know, when you look at what they've got to change in Game 3, it's obviously slowing the Knicks'
03:50run down.
03:51And then also, too, again, when you get those open looks, you've got to knock them down.
03:55And, you know, I make fun of the process.
03:57Look, they did have open looks.
04:00I didn't feel like, and I mentioned this last night when I was in with Jake Volnick on the postgame
04:04show,
04:04I didn't feel like that the Cavaliers were forcing the issue.
04:07We've seen that at times this season where, you know, they just start chucking threes because that's what they do.
04:13That's their offense.
04:14But you can't have, you know, of your 80 field goal attempts, 35 of them be from three and knock
04:22down just nine of them
04:24and expect you're going to come out on the road with a victory.
04:26That just isn't going to happen in today's NBA.
04:28So they've got to find that three-point shot this weekend.
04:32So, Daryl, for the record, are you blaming this loss on Kenny?
04:35No.
04:36I blame Game 1 loss on Kenny, absolutely.
04:39But I think that they just had a bad night in the office, which is going to happen.
04:43And, by the way, I fully expect it.
04:45The other thing, too, is, you know, I do think, and I know Donovan said last night that he's fine
04:52physically.
04:52I don't believe that.
04:54You know, Kenny Atkinson has downplayed the fatigue thing.
04:57And Donovan and others have downplayed the fatigue thing.
05:00But I do think it's real.
05:01I mean, they've been playing every other day now for what feels like three, four weeks.
05:06And that does take its toll.
05:08And one of the results of fatigue is you lose your shot.
05:13I mean, they were not good from the free-throw line last night as well.
05:18They missed 10 free-throws, and they got the whistle.
05:21They got over twice as many free-throws on the road in Madison Square Garden.
05:26That doesn't happen very often.
05:28The Cavaliers were getting to the free-throw line last night, and the legs were weak.
05:34Like, I just, they look like a team that was physically and emotionally spent at times last night.
05:42So, they got to find their sea legs if they want to get back in this series.
05:46Darrell Ryder joining us on the show.
05:47So, you don't think the series is over, then, by the way you're sounding?
05:51No, I don't.
05:53All right.
05:53Look, I respect the Knicks, okay?
05:56But they're not the Oklahoma City Thunder.
05:58They don't strike fear into me.
06:00Yes, they have a stone-cold killer that the Cavaliers don't have in Jalen Brunson.
06:04I wish the Cavaliers had some stone-cold killers on this team.
06:08They don't, okay?
06:09We've seen Donovan Mitchell defer in the fourth quarter.
06:13Last night, I can't believe Evan Mobley didn't have a field goal attempt in the second half after he started
06:17off so well.
06:18Like, they forgot, and this is, I think, part of their identity crisis that they have as a team.
06:25You know, you got to get the bigs involved, okay?
06:28I understand you want to spray it out and get those wide-open looks from three, but use the bigs.
06:33You have an advantage there, use them.
06:35They just didn't use them yesterday and last night, which was really frustrating to me.
06:41But I do think this series goes back to New York tied 2-2.
06:47All right, Daryl, I want to get to that Mobley thing a little bit longer because for him to come
06:53out in the first eight or so minutes,
06:56have Tim Legler and Richard Jefferson talking about how he was looking like the true unicorn,
07:05the zenith of the Evan Mobley experience.
07:08They basically said Carl Anthony Towns can't guard him.
07:10Mitchell Robinson can't guard him.
07:12Josh Hart can't guard him.
07:13You know, Annanoby wasn't big enough to guard him.
07:16And that was clearly going to be something that could open up maybe the possibility in this series.
07:24And then he gets almost no touches in the second half and gets zero field goal attempts and just got
07:29to the free throw line one time.
07:32I mean, that is a coaching slash guard issue, right?
07:36What else could it be?
07:37Yeah, I mean, that is just malpractice.
07:40When you have him start the game the way he did.
07:44And I agree with you.
07:45I don't think that the Knicks can guard Evan Mobley.
07:48You got to feed the beast.
07:50And we've seen it stretches this year.
07:53When the Cavaliers feed him, things go really, really well.
07:55And then when they stop feeding him, guess what happens?
07:58Shocking.
07:58Things don't go so well.
07:59So, hopefully that's a little bit of a lesson learned.
08:02One of my criticisms of Kenny Atkinson is I don't think he does a good enough job adjusting in-game
08:08to what opponents are doing.
08:10And that's a little bit of a problem because that's the whole reason he has his job, right?
08:14That's part of the reason they fired J.B. Bickerstaff.
08:17If they wanted to bring somebody in here that was a little bit more of a tactician in-game, that
08:23could make those in-game adjustments and whatnot.
08:25We're not seeing that from Kenny in the first two games, which is a little disappointing.
08:29And I don't know if he's been caught off guard by some things that the Knicks are doing or whatnot.
08:34But I think the Knicks are who they are.
08:38They stay true to who they are.
08:41I don't think the Cavaliers really know who they are.
08:44And I think that's part of the problem.
08:45You can hide behind the trades that were made at the deadline.
08:49Yeah, they did make a big trade at the deadline.
08:50It's going to be hard to figure it out.
08:52Yeah, but you know what?
08:53I don't want to hear that, Ken.
08:55You've got $100 million in your backcourt right now, okay?
08:58Well, just because they're paying a lot of money doesn't mean they're going to gel in half a season with
09:01very little practice.
09:02Yeah, well, again, that's their job.
09:05I have very little sympathy for the, well, you know, they did make that big trade at the deadline.
09:10And they've got to figure it out.
09:10Well, it's my job to get into it with you, and I'm about to get into it with you, Daryl.
09:13I know, I know.
09:14I just, they should have had this thing figured out by now.
09:19But I just, I think that the Cavaliers have an identity crisis, and they just, they don't know who they
09:26are, what they want to be.
09:29And whereas the Knicks know who they are.
09:33And I think that this goes a little deeper than just, well, you know, they brought in James Harden midstream.
09:39I think the issues go much, much deeper than that, because these are similar conversations that we were having before
09:45James Harden even got here.
09:47Daryl, we've got a couple Browns things I want to get to.
09:50I know, Ken, you want to talk about Miles.
09:51I do wonder, like, I saw people blasting.
09:53I don't want to talk about it.
09:54I don't want to ask them about it.
09:55Yeah, I saw people blasting Cleveland media for continuing to ask Todd Munkin about who's the leader when it comes
10:01to the quarterback position.
10:02Isn't that what every media is supposed to do with every quarterback competition in any camp?
10:08Like, how is that?
10:09Don't fans want to know who the leader is every day?
10:11Well, I mean, they still don't have a quarterback, and until they find that franchise quarterback, these are the questions
10:17that get asked every offseason.
10:19Is it redundant?
10:20Yeah.
10:20Is it annoying?
10:21Yeah.
10:22But these are the facts.
10:24They don't have a quarterback, and they've got to figure out who's going to be the guy at least to
10:28start the season.
10:29Because whoever starts the season, odds are not going to finish the season, because that's how she goes here in
10:33Cleveland.
10:35So, now, do I believe Todd Munkin and take him at his word that nothing has really changed or there's
10:41no leader in the clubhouse?
10:42Right, yeah, sure, fine, whatever.
10:44I mean, to me, it looks like Deshaun's the leader in the clubhouse.
10:46Shadour's the number two, you know, subject to change.
10:49They did give Shadour a lot of first-team reps on the back end of practice on Wednesday.
10:53It was not a practice that was designed for the quarterbacks to showcase their talents or air it out.
10:58There was a lot of run installation and whatnot.
11:01I think Deshaun made arguably the best throw of the day, and then Deshaun also, I think, made arguably the
11:06worst throw of the day as well during that practice session.
11:10But that's just how she goes.
11:12And, you know, I do feel like that Todd Munkin is being truthful.
11:17He's certainly a breath of fresh air, not afraid to tell you what's on his mind.
11:21But I do believe in when he says he wants to go into training camp with a starting quarterback ready
11:28to roll from day one in camp.
11:30Why are you making me ask him about Miles?
11:33You don't have to.
11:34I can do it.
11:35Yeah, go ahead.
11:35All right.
11:36No, go ahead and do it because people are going to call me a – almost said a word I
11:41have to dump.
11:41They're going to say I'm a coward if I don't ask them.
11:44Daryl, I'm being accused of trying to ignore a Miles Garrett conversation.
11:48I go, that's impossible because I keep getting it thrown in my face.
11:51You can't ignore something that people keep slapping you in the face over.
11:54Yeah.
11:55And I actually was able to meet Lima on one point here because Lima goes, well, he could just end
11:59this if he just says something.
12:00And I go, why would he?
12:02Why would Miles say anything?
12:04I think if he could agree to a trade that would be simple for the Browns to take a bunch
12:11of picks and he could go to a contender, I think he'd do it.
12:15And I think – I don't think he's doing – I think he's going through his normal thing where he
12:19doesn't go to camp or he doesn't go to the voluntary stuff.
12:22Yeah.
12:22I think that's normal.
12:23But I also think that, hey, you guys can go ahead and have that conversation because maybe, you know, maybe
12:29Stephen Jones does start to get wondering.
12:31And maybe Jerry Jones starts to get wondering.
12:33And they go, you know, if we offer him three first-round picks, they might take it.
12:35We know that Miles wants to play here.
12:36So maybe they start to think of it.
12:38So why does it – it just doesn't hurt Miles' business because the second he would get traded, he would
12:44get a new contract.
12:45Hell, he still might get a new contract here for all we know.
12:47It just doesn't hurt his business to keep this conversation going because he's still going to show up and play
12:52well.
12:53Yeah.
12:53Yeah, and that's ultimately, I think, what it comes down to, right?
12:56He's the best defensive player in the world.
12:59Him being at OTAs is not the end of the world.
13:01This is not abnormal behavior for him.
13:04And I guess maybe that's why I downplay it, Ken, because it's not abnormal behavior.
13:09Yeah, would it be nice with the new defensive coordinator and a new head coach if he had showed up
13:14and he would have had a face-to-face meeting with Todd Munkin?
13:17Of course.
13:18But we all know that's just not how Miles does things, right?
13:21And I don't think that Miles is all that upset by the conversation surrounding him, keeps his name in the
13:28headlines and all those things.
13:30And I maintain this.
13:33The Browns are unfortunately misaligned with Miles' career, okay?
13:40They got a little ways to get this offense on track.
13:43They still don't have a franchise quarterback.
13:45I don't know if one's in the offing in our lifetime at this point.
13:48We're 42 of these guys deep.
13:50I lost count of how many have been here since Miles was drafted in 2017.
13:55It's in the 20s.
13:57So, you know, from his perspective, yeah.
13:59Do I think that Miles Garrett wants to go play for a contender and has pretty much had it with
14:03losing in Cleveland 100%?
14:05That's why he did what he did last year.
14:07But the Browns were very steadfast and we're not trading you.
14:10We will pay you, but we are not going to trade you.
14:12And that's what they did.
14:13The Browns did what they usually do, and that's throw money at the problem.
14:16At some point, though, Ken, there's going to be not – there's not going to be enough money to throw
14:22at the problem, right?
14:23At some point, push is going to come to shove here.
14:25So, I think from a team-building standpoint, they made a mistake last year by extending him and giving him
14:35that big contract extension.
14:37But I understand why the Browns did it.
14:39He is the best player on the team.
14:41He's the face of the franchise right now.
14:42They're trying to sell tickets and PSLs to the new stadium and whatnot.
14:47And if you trade Miles, that's certainly not going to make fans feel all that great about the direction you're
14:53heading in.
14:53But, again, you're just – you're misaligned.
14:55You have this great defense, and then you have this offense that you're just trying to – right now, you're
15:00just trying to get it put back together.
15:01And it's really, really unfortunate, but that's how things go when you're talking about the Browns, unfortunately.
15:07Daryl, thank you very much.
15:08Have a good weekend, and we'll talk to you next week.
15:11See you tomorrow at the game, Daryl?
15:12Yeah, we'll see you there, Lima.
15:15I'm sure you'll stop by to say hi.
15:17I was going to say, he ain't going to be in the media area.
15:19Yeah, no.
15:19Lima never says hi.
15:21Lima's always up with the important people.
15:24There'll be three sheets to the breeze.
15:27That's where he'll be.
15:27He might need to be three sheets to the breeze.
15:29Is there going to be a Knicks takeover tomorrow?
15:31Daryl, you just said it was going to be a 2-2 series heading back to New York.
15:34Is it going to be a Knicks takeover tomorrow?
15:36No, I don't think – well, didn't the Cavs do that geo-blocking thing?
15:40They did.
15:40How effective will it be?
15:43Well, let's put it this way.
15:44I hope it's more effective than James Harden's defense.
15:47All right, Daryl, that wasn't called for.
15:49All right, Daryl, I'll see you in hell.
15:50Goodbye.
15:51See you guys.
15:51Daryl Ryder, he's brought to you by –
15:53Shive and Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
