00:00Let's welcome to Shine Time, the critically acclaimed host of the Throwback Show,
00:06and all-time friends of the show, entourage legend, die-hard fan of the Knicks,
00:14my guy, Jerry Ferrara.
00:17Jerry, how are ya?
00:18You know, watching that clip, you reminded me I owe Wahlberg a text now.
00:23I haven't, you know, I look, I've been up late on Twitter enjoying this moment
00:27because I allow myself to enjoy a Knicks win like this for 24 hours, and then you put it away.
00:32I gotta hit my guy, Mark. I forgot about that. Thanks for bringing that up again, Adam.
00:37Absolutely, Jerry, of course. And you're right, we got 24 hours, we celebrate, we validate, and then we move on.
00:43So, the Knicks aren't just winning, they're kicking ass.
00:47Seven straight, a sweep of Philly.
00:49I've never seen anything quite like this in my life as a Knicks fan.
00:54How would you describe the joy in what you're seeing?
00:58It is shocking.
01:00You know, I go back with this team to about 1989, 1990, when I really started watching the Knicks.
01:05So, shocking is really the word.
01:07The fact that it's a full-on party by 10 minutes to go in the third quarter,
01:13that is something no Knicks fan is familiar with.
01:15And you couldn't, no one, as smart as you might be with basketball,
01:19and as much as you love the Knicks, no one could have predicted what's been going on.
01:23But, here's my thoughts now, pulling out from the series.
01:26Obviously, you love the way games three and four went.
01:30You can't ask for anything better.
01:31Be more impressed with game two.
01:34That was the dangerous game.
01:36Embiid's a great player, but clearly he can't really move.
01:39Maxie was going to be featured.
01:40That's a game Philly threw their best punches.
01:43Very dangerous moment.
01:44And the Knicks found a way to win a gritty, ugly, tough game.
01:48And that, at the end of it all, is what you should be impressed with,
01:52even though what we saw in game three and four is historic.
01:54And I just don't think you could ever get used to that.
01:56So, expect more game two in the Eastern Conference Finals.
02:00I think that's the obvious answer.
02:01I love your take.
02:02I said as much after game two.
02:04That's one where, even though it wasn't comfortable in domination and what we've seen,
02:09that is what you ultimately get as the harbinger of things to come
02:12and what's inspiring here with the potential to win a championship.
02:15I totally, I love that and agree with it.
02:18Now, you have seen clutch New York sports stars your entire life.
02:22What makes Jalen Brunson, in your opinion, so reliable and iconic?
02:27So, look, I mean, obviously, you know,
02:30you even look at those videos with him with his dad,
02:32like the thousands and thousands of hours that he's put in at the game of basketball, right?
02:38That's always step one.
02:38But, to me, when I watch all these great athletes who know just how to get to that next level,
02:45I even think about the Yankees with Jeter with that flip against the A's in the playoff game.
02:49To me, I just think that dude has played out a million scenarios
02:53and probably plays them out even right now today as he sits back on some rest.
02:58It's the only thing I think actors and athletes have in common is understanding the moment, right?
03:04That's an actor's job.
03:05And I think the truly great, iconic athletes, especially the clutch ones,
03:10understand the moment, don't get afraid of it,
03:13and have already played this scenario out in their mind.
03:15It just comes down to, can I execute what I thought about?
03:19I think you nailed that.
03:20I love that comparison with athletes and actors,
03:23and you're 100% right about understanding the moment.
03:26Now, I saw the picture on your Instagram that your son had his Deuce jersey on on Sunday.
03:32So, let's be clear here, he gets my game ball,
03:35and full credit for Deuce nailing the threes.
03:38Were you surprised?
03:40How worried were you when OG got hurt?
03:42And also, let's not bury the lead here, why the Deuce jersey?
03:47So, talking about OG, of course, of course that's terrifying.
03:51We all remember two years ago when he pulled up with that hammy,
03:54and I think that it would have been really interesting to see
03:56where that Knicks team would have went had he not gotten hurt.
03:58We're all, I mean, I think I was up all night refreshing trying to see his status.
04:02So, we're all still afraid of that.
04:03It is nice to see these performances in game three and four without OG,
04:08A, for the rest, but B, just to see that these guys are ready to step up.
04:12So, as far as my seven-year-old who just turned seven,
04:15Adam, I do not force the Knicks upon him.
04:18I don't force basketball upon him.
04:19He sees me watch.
04:21We talk about it.
04:22He asks me a million questions.
04:23He now understands the game.
04:26He loves Deuce McBride.
04:27He loves his story.
04:28Second-round pick.
04:29No one thought he'd make it in the NBA.
04:31Oh, he can't shoot.
04:31He doesn't have an NBA three.
04:33He asked for that jersey for his birthday.
04:36It came two days late and arrived Saturday evening.
04:39He wore it on Sunday.
04:40Adam, when he's hitting those threes in the first quarter,
04:42we're literally, I'm just, I'm grabbing the jersey.
04:44I'm, like, rubbing it on my head.
04:46I'm picking him up.
04:46It was a full-on, just pandemonium moment when Deuce,
04:50and I think Deuce broke that game wide open,
04:53and you knew it was over.
04:55He snatched whatever little heart that Philly had left
04:58with those threes,
04:58and we're not going to shoot nine for ten from three often,
05:02but, man, that was just incredible, incredible moment
05:08for Deuce McBride, and I'm happy for him.
05:10Without question.
05:10Now, I was crushed when Tibbs got fired.
05:13Then I took a breath, and I liked the Mike Brown hire.
05:16Regular season, I thought, was really good.
05:18I still thought the Knicks, and they were my pick, you know,
05:21before the season, before the playoffs, to win the East.
05:24Being fair, as you said earlier, I didn't expect this.
05:29So how much credit do you give Mike Brown?
05:33Oh, I think Mike Brown gets a ton of credit.
05:35The whole coaching staff, you can tell this is not just a Mike Brown,
05:39I got this, you can tell that.
05:41You can even see in timeouts, that whole staff is engaged.
05:44Like, I'm sure most staffs are, but they are just clicking it away.
05:48And, look, I was pretty upset at the Tibbs firing,
05:51only because if you really come in on this team when Tibbs took over
05:54with Randall and, you know, Reggie Bullock,
05:57it was such a weird moment, and they still got, like, a four seed.
06:00So I think we all owe a thanks to Tibbs for getting us here.
06:05And I was a little, like, taken back with Mike Brown at first
06:08because I'm like, you know, we had all these weird rumors,
06:10Jason Kidd, they're going to try and poach Billy Donovan.
06:12Like, that stuff never worked for me.
06:14I just always say with Tom Thibodeau, the floor was always high.
06:18That Knicks team doesn't get blown out.
06:20They really don't.
06:22Maybe the ceiling is capped,
06:24even though I don't even want to say that as a knock to Tibbs.
06:26Maybe you can make that argument.
06:28With Mike Brown, I think maybe the floor is a little lower.
06:30Like, this team could sink into some pretty weird ways,
06:33as we saw with that 9 out of 11 losing streak.
06:35But I just think the ceiling is so much higher.
06:38Props to him. Props to the players.
06:40And I just don't think anyone was really unlocking Cat in this way.
06:43To see a guy take, like, six shots and impact the game the way he is.
06:48You know, I'm the most optimistic Knick fan out there.
06:51I get harassed.
06:52I just want to keep free court side seats, which, of course, I do.
06:55But I'll be critical when the time's right.
06:58To me, this was never a talent issue.
07:01This is, can these guys figure it out together as a team and play?
07:06You know, it was never a talent issue.
07:07I don't think Detroit has more talent than the Knicks.
07:09It's just Detroit was locked in in the regular season,
07:12and at times the Knicks were not.
07:14So, let's piggyback off of what you just said in terms of the optimism.
07:18Because, you know, I'm optimistic, but I'm realistic, right?
07:22And that's, you know, how my fandom is and also how I am on air.
07:25And I always am authentic and tell the audience what I'm feeling.
07:28And I'm feeling like this team has an opportunity to win a championship.
07:32Now, I'm not naive, and OKC is the best team in all of basketball.
07:36They're juggernauts. They're the favorite.
07:38But I'll tell you, I'm getting a little greedy, Jerry.
07:41And whether it's, you know, you're watching with your kids, I'm watching with mine,
07:44my son Theo's obsessed, he's 11 years old.
07:47You have those opportunities, right?
07:50And I'm watching them play.
07:51You reference Cat Brunson, the bench, the way they're doing it,
07:55the way they're just sheerly dominant and winning those close games.
07:59Can you go into the crystal ball, feel it a little bit?
08:04Am I allowed to get greedy here and start dreaming about what it would be like
08:09for the Knicks to win a championship?
08:11I think you're allowed.
08:13It's a tricky thing, right?
08:15Because the way it all lined up last year,
08:17I believe we were favorites going into that Indiana series.
08:21And certainly I allowed myself to play this out.
08:24Like, oh, wow, this team's going to go to the finals.
08:26And only to get our hearts crushed.
08:28So for me, I don't go too far ahead.
08:31And I guess if I was to look at the Detroit-Cleveland part of it,
08:34you know, I think two very dangerous teams.
08:36I think Cleveland, even though people are sort of overlooking them,
08:39they got that.
08:39It'll be very interesting to see what happens today, tonight.
08:43A part of me wants Detroit because I feel like a lot of people will pick
08:47Detroit in that series.
08:48They seem to certainly want the Knicks.
08:50I just want to stay the hunter.
08:53I don't want this Knicks team to be the hunted.
08:55I want to stay the hunter.
08:56And if those players can keep that mentality,
08:58I think you absolutely can allow yourself to daydream.
09:01But don't kid yourself and daydream about 45-point blow.
09:05That would just be stunning.
09:07I don't think you could do that to either of those two teams.
09:10So.
09:11You reference real-life Jerry Ferrara, of course, sitting courtside.
09:15I want a hypothetical for a second.
09:17If the entourage characters were courtside during this run,
09:23what would this scene be like?
09:25Oh.
09:28So, you know, historically, the entourage guys, we lived in L.A.
09:31We always went to the Lakers game on the show.
09:34And it was always more ā we made it more on the show about who's there
09:38and Jack Nicholson and all this fun stuff, where the after party was.
09:42To me, if the entourage guys were courtside, it would be very intense.
09:47At least my character would be.
09:49I think you would see ā a cool thing would be, after a Knicks win,
09:53bringing Vinny Chase into the crowd outside the garden and stick him up on a light post.
09:58You're having this almost famous moment, shouting down to the fans.
10:02I think that would ā and Johnny Drama dropping to the knees, going victory.
10:06I think that would be a great episode.
10:08That would be amazing.
10:09I'd sign up for that right now.
10:11By the way, Sixers fans.
10:12Jerry, what a joke.
10:14Seriously.
10:15I ā and look, I think Philly fans in general are awesome.
10:19I think Sixers fans with the whole process, it's a culture of losing.
10:23I mean, look at this scene.
10:24There's a live report from South Philly.
10:26What was your take on MSG South?
10:29I just think you've got to maybe move the building.
10:32You've got to move further away.
10:35I mean, the fact that Brunson, Hart, and Bridges have had the most success in that building
10:40of any of those, you know, 20-something players in that game.
10:45Look, I was afraid of this series because two years ago, Adam, like, you see me on Twitter, man.
10:50I only essentially tweet about the Knicks.
10:52That's what I use Twitter for.
10:53And during that series two years ago, the only fan base to ever hurt my feelings and
10:58made me consider quitting Twitter was Philly fans.
11:01It's not Boston.
11:02It's not L.A.
11:04It's Philly fans only.
11:06So I was gearing up for this series, ready to go to Twitter battle, and you know what?
11:11They didn't want any smoke.
11:13They had nothing on Twitter.
11:15The trash talk was lame.
11:16It just never felt like they believed in it, as they did two years ago with a much scarier
11:22team.
11:22So I don't know how you come back.
11:25I applaud Maxie for being vulnerable about the whole thing.
11:29I guess, look, but there is a cure.
11:31The cure is you got to go kick some butt.
11:33You got to go kick some butt.
11:34That's the bottom line.
11:35And I don't know how you do that with the team currently constructed, but you got to go
11:38blow someone out in the playoff game.
11:40Like the Boston thing revived that building.
11:42If this would have been a competitive six, seven game series, it might not have been
11:45a full, maybe only a half takeover.
11:47Not a full takeover.
11:48That was a full.
11:49Full takeover.
11:50Like if you play the game risk, like just invaded a country and just took it over.
11:54And that's now ours.
11:55All right.
11:56Last one for you.
11:57Your Giants.
11:58I love that they're going to be on Sunday night football to start the season against
12:02the Dallas Cowboys at home.
12:04What are your expectations this year for John Harbaugh's Giants?
12:09I think you could really focus on that week one right out of the gate, because I cannot
12:12remember the last time the Giants beat the Cowboys in an opener or week two or three.
12:17They got some late season wins with injuries all over the place.
12:22To me, if this team really is going to be different, you beat the Giants, you beat the
12:26Cowboys week one.
12:28Look, I love what they did with the draft.
12:30And I really, really think that, I mean, I don't know how close there are.
12:34People say they might be this year's Patriots.
12:35That's a lot of things have to line up for that to happen.
12:38That's a big stretch.
12:39But I like this team in the East.
12:42I just think that they got the right guys.
12:44I think that offensive line is going to be good.
12:45And I love the way they're building the team.
12:47And we got the quarterback.
12:48That's the thing that I'm sorry.
12:50I love the NFL, but it kind of begins and ends with that.
12:53You've got to have that guy.
12:54And they do without question.
12:56Jerry, you're that guy.
12:57Love the throwbacks.
12:58You and Matt are absolutely dominant.
13:00Love the show.
13:01Keep up the unbelievable work.
13:03Keep up the great Knicks fandom.
13:04Love it on social media.
13:05And we'll do it again real soon, my friend.
13:08I appreciate you.
13:08Good talk.
13:09And, yeah, hopefully we're talking summer celebration.
13:12I would love that.
13:13Jerry Ferrara, of course.
13:14He is the absolute best.
13:15We'll see you next time.
13:17We'll see you next time.
