02:01but I remember it was just like she'd fallen head over heels that's for sure
02:11my god
02:23yeah okay it's okay we are now on the orient express on june 26th this is an american couple filming
02:33this
02:33young australian couple who are here to have a great time you're on the air
02:40Yes, he was this wild guy, but his intention was good, even if we weren't being so good.
02:49Everything was done with a lot of love.
02:53They've drunk all the champagne.
02:55Oh, cut.
02:57Cut.
02:57Cut.
03:00I had so many firsts with him.
03:02Hi.
03:04Hi.
03:05I never felt like I had blinkers on, but he took them off.
03:20I was at the perfect age.
03:21I was 21 years old.
03:30That's nice.
03:42He was hilarious and cultured and tender.
03:56I love seeing the ones that are, that's not the shot, the moments around the shot.
04:07I just felt like I had my person there.
04:11Did you film you?
04:12I really did.
04:15Movie star.
04:16Oh.
04:17Movie star in Italy.
04:19In Italy.
04:20You can see it in any pictures from then as well.
04:28Maybe life wasn't going so fast for a second, because I remember all of it.
04:35Like being on that boat in Hong Kong with that feeling of promise.
04:43I felt like a jewel.
04:45If you dropped it, it would smash, but if you protected it, it could shine.
04:57Are you going to marry him?
04:59Well, it wouldn't be nice to be proposed to, but I don't know.
05:02We'll have to see.
05:14At the time, I got in to see NXS recording in the studio.
05:20And I loved it.
05:23I loved being in amongst that.
05:27I felt like I'd discovered a tribe.
05:30I thought it was amazing to see them write songs together and have ownership over the end result.
05:38You know, we're pretty much equal.
05:40We tend to discuss things.
05:41I'll say, I think this, and if they all go, oh yeah, we agree with that, then we'll go into
05:46songs basically.
05:48It must be that way.
05:50You have to be true to yourself.
05:53Then it was like a light bulb.
06:00I wanted to express myself more.
06:02And I just hadn't had that before.
06:13I knew this was the turning point.
06:18She had a rock star boyfriend.
06:21Michael gave her the confidence to be confident.
06:24Whatever I did, I knew she wasn't going to like.
06:28Remember the old days.
06:32Remember the old days.
06:33Snare drumming.
06:36Bit of guitar.
06:38Bit more guitar.
06:41Here's a hi-hat.
06:44I'd started making noise.
06:47I've got an idea.
06:48I mean, what about this and what about that?
06:51We had not time to discuss anything.
06:53Because we're, you know, we didn't have the time.
06:57I became really frustrated.
07:00It felt like fighting against the system.
07:04I know I've had 15 number ones.
07:06I know we've had 142 top 20s.
07:10I mean, I've lost cancer.
07:12I wanted to explore different ideas.
07:14Be open to change.
07:17That's not what the public want.
07:19That's not what the public want.
07:20The public want I should be so lucky.
07:24Oh, well, um, I'm just tired of playing it so safe.
07:30And I should be allowed to speak.
07:33I should be allowed to have some input.
07:36Just to be able to have something to do with my work, you know.
07:40Not just be the face for it.
07:42Me.
07:43Me.
07:45Me.
07:46Me.
07:47Me.
07:48Me.
07:48Me.
07:49It's like someone was strangling any creativity that I had.
07:56And by being forced to be quiet, shut up and listen,
08:00I learnt a lot that way.
08:05And so things don't change.
08:08I won't be here anymore.
08:14Unless I could have things my way.
08:19Listen.
08:20I have two daughters.
08:22And at some point, the old man don't know as much as they do.
08:30That's called growing up.
08:32I didn't used to be able to say no.
08:35You do now.
08:36I certainly do.
08:39Yeah, I do.
08:46I was reclaiming my sense of self.
08:54And that's when I discovered that there were many more Kylies out there.
09:01It's upon the hour to come amongst you and amaze you with absolute incredible,
09:05out in this worldwide show.
09:07Look out.
09:08Here we go.
09:12I think my manager had said,
09:16there's a Kylie night and I'd never heard of a Kylie night.
09:21I'm like, what?
09:32There's drag performers dressed as you.
09:36Do you want to go?
09:37Yeah.
09:38Yeah.
09:38Yeah.
09:42It was like, wow.
09:44Who.
09:47The supersonic versions of me.
09:58And this was a time when it was in to really not like me
10:07And I ended up on stage at this drag bar and I felt like the least Kylie there
10:14Yeah, I thought I gotta step it up. I gotta get some lashes on and some eyeliner or something
10:25Pete Waterman have been badgered sufficiently to go. All right, kid. What do you want?
10:30What kind of music do you want to make? And I think that might be the first time he really
10:34asked me that
10:36I just had had enough
10:40She was going to clubs she's not a part of that whole clubsy
10:47If you're in that you're gonna want your records sound like that
10:56Why do you think it suits people to portray you as some kind of bimbo because it's easy and then
11:00I'm not a threat to them
11:03There's something pretty remarkable about young Kylie Minogue
11:07Gossip columnists write her off as the singing budgie
11:11Well the budgie's feathers are ruffled
11:15Monday 29 jam 10 30 sharp
11:18Remember that gig
11:23We caught ourselves
11:25Singing budgie's
11:28Remember I was wearing my amazing shiny tights
11:31But I was obsessed with I
11:35Remember Michael being smacked bang in the middle of the crowd
11:41Kylie's got this real sweet innocent image
11:44But it's really not the person that people think she is
11:48There's a lot of strength
11:50Singing budgie you know it's a horrible title
11:52Whoever wrote that is probably fat and bald and 50 years old, but they look 70 and they've got bad
11:58breath and
11:59Can't control themselves
12:02And they're probably jealous
12:07We've gone from I should be so lucky to Kylie the diva in one foul swoop
12:14She wanted to see the video makers
12:17She wanted to see the video makers
12:18She wanted her own stylists
12:19The guys that we've worked with here for years
12:21She just went I'm not working with those guys anymore
12:25Whether it's stylists or photographers or whoever
12:29I'm working with them rather than just being force-fed their ideas
12:38I was running from the 80s
12:40The sheen of it the era of it the puppeteering or the having no substance
12:48And as soon as I had my image in my little grasp
12:55By God I'll turn into a lunatic
12:57By God I'll turn into a lunatic
13:08Those few bars that we heard there the first time anybody's heard your new single in this country
13:13Yeah
13:13I videotaped together with you well, yeah, that's being sent over tomorrow actually, and it's quite different
13:17Oh my god. Oh my god. This is it. This is the moment
13:26Holy Mary mother of God
13:28I guess I was taking the power back
13:39Yeah, just saying all right
13:43Let's go
13:46Okay, one report please
13:47Oh my god, the press are gonna ban it
13:50I think it's gonna be bad
13:51I know it's gonna be terrible
13:53Mum? What's your dad gonna say?
13:59It's gonna be bad
14:06Oh
14:07Kylie Minogue of a squeaky clean next-door neighbour kicks off her tour tonight
14:11She'll be putting her new look and new sound through their paces
14:16There we go, there we go
14:17Right, right, right
14:21What can the fans expect?
14:24It's lots of fun. It's just an hour and a half of letting go and just enjoying themselves
14:29The papers in England have been saying your show's raunchier this time
14:33Is that right?
14:34Well, they've gone a little extreme
14:36It's not an x-rated show or anything
14:40Is that what I was wearing? Like really raunchy outfits?
14:50She couldn't have picked a worse thing to do
14:54Kylie arrived by coach in Dublin after a four-hour journey from Belfast
15:00It's great to finally be here
15:02There's a lot of talk about the changing image for Kylie Minogue
15:06Yeah, I saw that in the paper today
15:08Nice hair to Yvonne
15:10Yeah
15:16So what can people expect when they come to see you?
15:25Well, lots of choreography, fabulous costumes
15:29My outfits have been designed by John Galliano
15:33After checking her out, seeing how she danced, how she moved
15:36Getting to know her personality
15:37I went away and did some drawings
15:40So her first outfit was very inspired by Lolita
15:47And it's worn over a frilly bra and a body slip with built-in knickers
15:56Everybody's going out there
15:57She's going, no, no, no
15:58Whoa, whoa, whoa
16:01This is Kylie's wish
16:02Ready? Five, six, seven, eight
16:07This is what she wants to do
16:09Hi
16:10Hi
16:12Three
16:16She's gonna find out for herself
16:20I don't want people to know what to expect, actually
16:22I want them to come with an open mind
16:42Yeah, we went a bit far
16:44I'm not gonna lie
16:45We went a bit far
16:54I mean a good
16:55Maybe it was good in real
16:56But it didn't look good in a freeze frame
17:02I'm gonna defend it with that
17:09Does that help?
17:11I think it does help
17:17But I know what you're gonna cut to
17:22Now our next guest shocked her young fans
17:25By strutting across the stage in some of this ghetto
17:28I don't have to describe it too much
17:29Kylie, good morning
17:30Hi, how are you?
17:31I'm very well
17:32How do you react?
17:33I mean, did you read all the criticism
17:35Or did you throw most of it away?
17:37I saw some of it
17:43They say that you look a bit like Madonna now
17:45Or you're trying to model yourself on Madonna
17:47Well, when we're saying they
17:48We're talking about tabloid praise
17:50Yeah
17:50That was tricky
17:51To defend those decisions
18:01With your new tour name
18:02There is such controversy
18:04Yeah
18:06I'm a bit surprised
18:10She kind of went too far
18:12Prancing around the Dublin stage in lingerie
18:14She went from the girl next door
18:17To the girl next door who's been around the flock
18:20It's much raunchier than it was
18:22Yes
18:22I mean, I don't really like to call myself raunchy
18:25We've just seen your raunchy new video
18:28The new raunchy image
18:30It's certainly fairly raw, isn't it?
18:32Raw?
18:33Well, raw as in raunchy, I mean
18:37There was a time when you thought
18:39Where you said you were raunchier than your sister
18:42She's changed the image, hasn't she?
18:44Yeah, she has lately
18:45I remember thinking
18:48This is so boring
18:52Repetitive
18:55Stupid
18:56To hear that Kylie Minogue is too sexy
18:59It's a bit like hearing that Mary Poppins has turned into a hooker
19:02I mean
19:03I mean, imagine you just show up to work every day
19:08And you just
19:10What?
19:12There's even been speculation in Australia that you've had a boob job
19:17Oh dear
19:18One magazine even went as far as showing before and after shots
19:26It's exhausting
19:30And then as a female pop artist, if you say something, you're a bitch, you've got an ego, you're a
19:38diva
19:39Any mother accompanying?
19:41No, well, you know, if you're going to interview me having researched tabloid newspapers, there's no point talking to me
19:49because I didn't see loads of mothers storming out with their children
19:53And if you're a guy and you say, shut up, that's not true, people go, fair enough, he's right
19:58One mother, so I get questioned, God, well, you know, parents were storming out with the kids, it's rubbish
20:07I am disappointed at the moment because I'm not trying to, I'm trying to be myself
20:15But whenever the going got tough, I had that love and support from Michael
20:23In Excess is the first non-American group to land six consecutive top ten hits in the Hot 100 since
20:32Culture Club in 1983-84
20:38But Michael was touring all over the world, so it became really hard for us to see each other
20:56So I would send video messages to him
21:01Is it telling you it's low light?
21:04One, two, three
21:06Kylie sends a light to Michael
21:11Mum and Yvonne
21:12Hi
21:17I think of another message to give you very shortly
21:23But it just became more and more difficult
21:27Are you still in love with Kylie?
21:29God, Jeff
21:34Don't ask me a kiss, that's, no, it's too private, you know
21:37At the very least we're very good friends, you know, and always will be
21:42It's not, you know, kind of the very best
21:44Who knows?
21:46Who knows?
21:48I was standing
21:51You were there
21:53He was the first in so many ways
21:55Two worlds collided
21:58And they could never tear us apart
22:02And one of those first was
22:05A heartbreak
22:13I was devastated
22:20He was a rock star
22:21Which doesn't just mean
22:24That he needs to have many women in his life
22:27But he needed to
22:29Go where he needed to go
22:35But I know from people in his circle
22:39That he talked of me and thought of me
22:48We were good together
22:53Shoulda, woulda, coulda, whatever
22:54You know, you go on and live your lives
22:59But it was definitely an amazing point in time
23:04And I've probably been looking for something like that ever since
23:07And I haven't got it
23:12Really?
23:14Yeah
23:15Can I ask, when you think of him today
23:18How does it make you feel?
23:24Good, even if I'm getting teary
23:26Because it's just, it's like
23:28It was all good
23:32Yeah
23:33But to have
23:35Someone that you really felt like you were a good team
23:39Yeah
23:43Anyway, we've got to go past that
23:51I didn't know where to go, what to do
23:54And I didn't want to be in London
23:55I didn't want to be in Australia
23:58And so
23:59I went to Paris
24:02I remember having a tiny English to French dictionary
24:09I didn't know anyone there
24:10But I had two phone numbers
24:13Scratched on a bit of paper
24:15And one of those numbers was
24:17A friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of mine
24:26And
24:26And
24:28She lived with a girl called Kat
24:31My best, oldest girlfriend
24:34Katarina Jeb, whose apartment we're in
24:38Kat doesn't like to be in front of a camera
24:41I'm out of here
24:42Tell me if you need anything
24:44Okay
24:46I'll wail
24:47But she is an amazing photographer
24:50With an incredible eye
24:51And heart
24:53Corners
24:54Corners and corners
24:56And we say corners
24:59Love from all corners
25:04Katja Prince, what do we have here?
25:07Paris
25:12I moved myself into her apartment
25:15I got a sleeping bag
25:16I slept on the sofa
25:19I was feeling heartbroken
25:21And was escaping my feelings
25:26But we would do photo sessions
25:32Just the two of us
25:35I didn't know who she was
25:36Because my exposure to pop culture
25:39Was not very voluminous
25:43But it was an instantaneous understanding
25:51Going for it?
25:53I don't know
25:56I've been the subject pretty much my entire life
26:01But this was different
26:04We're not doing it because someone's asked for it
26:09We're doing it because we want to do it
26:12The public persona versus the private persona
26:16How many people can unveil themselves
26:20Completely unfiltered?
26:24I'd been doing very dark lashes and kind of buffon
26:27And it was Kat who said to me
26:29What about you just let your hair
26:32Just let the curls out
26:34Or maybe less of the brows
26:36And then I went like to nothing
26:40Even though a photograph can capture a moment
26:42Can capture a story
26:44It's really hard to see yourself
26:47There's this camera
26:48There's a wall
26:50You see through it
26:51You can't see it
26:52But there's a divide
26:56And I felt with hers
26:58The invisible wall
27:00Was gone
27:03And I was looking through Kat's photographs
27:06And I thought wow I can see me
27:10She was a real saviour to me
27:14I started to feel good and confident
27:17As a woman on my own
27:23She has called it the end of an era
27:25And they have refused to comment
27:27But Kylie Minogue's relationship with Pete Waterman Limited
27:30Her record company of five years
27:31Has ended
27:34Kylie told MTV News
27:35That PWL found it hard to accept the changes
27:38To be honest
27:39I wasn't sad
27:41And I remember honestly
27:43I had to sit with the staff here
27:45And explain that at some point
27:48You left home from your mum and dad
27:50Well this is Kylie
27:52Leaving home from my mum and dad
27:54And making it on her own
27:56That's all it is
27:56And that's part of growing up
28:00You know so
28:07We've come to an end
28:09Things do come to an end
28:11You know
28:16I signed to Deconstruction Records
28:21They had a very independent feel
28:24Kylie, how do you do in Western Mutual?
28:29They were open to experimentation
28:32They were open to experimentation
28:33And wanted me to be much more involved
28:38And we talked about a very different vocal delivery
28:43We all get hurt by love
28:47We all get hurt by love
28:48And we all have a cross to bear
28:53I hadn't done those kind of notes before
28:55But it was like, feel the fear and do it anyway
28:59Problems should be shared
29:06I've never done anything like that
29:08I've never done anything like that
29:16Kylie Minogue returns to the pop scene this week
29:20With a new record and a new sound
29:29The new album Kylie Minogue
29:31Is widely been greeted as your bid to become treated as a serious artist
29:36Is that how you see it?
29:37Um
29:43I can use whatever language I like
29:57If Kylie Minogue represents the Australian dream
30:00Then Nick Cave is surely the Australian nightmare
30:09Attracting a cult following with his twisted lyrics and darkly wasted image
30:14All right, go all the way down to the end
30:16I think those songs are written with a fair amount of disgust for things
30:24Yeah
30:30Because I'm a pretty disgusted person
30:39Look, I was an observer
30:44And I just always liked her
30:46Whenever I saw her on the TV
30:49There was something about her that I liked
30:52But, you know, I didn't sit around and listen to her records or anything
30:56I wasn't like a fan fan
31:00But there was something that I recognised in her that I responded to
31:06But you just don't like to be photographed?
31:09No, I don't really
31:09So, let's move it along here
31:14There was a strange thing with Kylie because even though she had mass appeal
31:19You know, she had everything
31:21But credibility
31:23And I looked at her
31:25Because
31:27I had credibility
31:28But not much else
31:38At that time, I was writing a bunch of murder songs
31:43So I had a kind of audacious idea
31:46For Kylie Minogue to do a murder ballad
31:51Yeah, hello
31:53But there was terrible opposition from management and so forth
31:58That this is just a fucked up idea
32:00Which it was
32:02This is cool
32:04Storyboard for where the wild roses grow
32:07This is so cool
32:09Nick observes Kylie's face and body in water
32:14I was a well-known sort of drug addict
32:16Close-up angle static
32:18Kylie lays in water, tear on cheek
32:20Flies possibly buzz around face
32:21And the nature of the song was dubious
32:26Close-up static, Nick reaches for rock again
32:31Yeah, I mean, that's always been close to my heart
32:34Nick reached out and I was like
32:39Who? Like, huh?
32:41I was not the demographic of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
32:46Fan club
32:47But there is an Australian thing
32:49They just do shit, right?
32:52They just do stuff
32:53And they don't think about it too much
32:55They just give stuff a shot, you know
32:57And she's like, yeah, okay
33:00And...
33:01I was... I was naive, I didn't know
33:07We were waiting for her to come into the studio
33:13I don't think anyone had met Kylie before
33:19And the Bad Seeds, we were a dark force
33:24This group of weird, fucked up, sort of broken men
33:30And a lot of drugs
33:32And a contemptuous, pessimistic view of the world
33:38But when she came into the studio
33:43She was like this sort of beam of light
33:51With this incredible positivity
33:57I don't think we'd ever met anyone in our lives, really, that liked life
34:06Just this sort of bold brightness
34:10And we were really, we were terrified, or offered to some degree
34:16On the first day I saw her, I knew she was...
34:20And when she went to record
34:22She sang in a kind of
34:25Kylie-esque, trained
34:28Lot of vocal tricks, I guess
34:31And we were like, look
34:33Forget all that, just sing it straight
34:36When it knocked on my door
34:38And entered the room
34:41Sing it less, like almost make it a story
34:44He would be my first man
34:47And be a character
34:48With a careful hand
34:49He wiped out the tears
34:52And she just did this version of it
34:54That so beautifully haunted the whole thing
34:57They call me the wild road
35:01We were just staggered
35:03But my name's Eliza Day
35:08Why'd they call me that fight, do not know
35:14To be a girl
35:15Good evening, and we have something very special for you tonight
35:17On Top of the Pops
35:21I remember doing Top of the Pops
35:23I think you can see by the performance, I don't know what's going on
35:29I'm just sort of bumbling around
35:32You know, the people that turned up to my concerts were psychos
35:38We would be taking iron bars and scissors and knives off people in the front row
35:43So I know about a dangerous audience
35:47But I've never experienced anything like Kylie Minogue's
35:53Audience
35:54They were terrifying
35:58Just these sort of monstrous, awful teenage girls
36:05They did not like me
36:08They did not like me to go near their princess
36:11Well, Nick gets worried that my fans didn't like him or didn't like the project
36:18I don't think that's so
36:20And these little girls say, you fucking old bastard
36:23What are you doing? You horrible old cunt
36:26They were just evil
36:28So I couldn't help but throw my arms around Kylie
36:34And they're just running their fingers across their throats
36:37And saying, just don't
36:39And then they'd turn the cameras towards them
36:41And they'd all be like, hey!
36:45Kylie with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
36:47Right, well done
36:49Evil, evil people
36:56I'm a hell of a lot better for seeing you
36:59I'm a hell of a lot better for seeing you
36:59Did you read about us in the paper?
37:01No
37:03Apparently we're snogging
37:06Bands
37:11More snogging than singing was the thing
37:15Our worlds collided
37:17But it was like another kind of
37:20Love
37:26I'm gonna sound like I'm just like falling in love all the time
37:28But it was really
37:30Um
37:33Some kind of union
37:36That wasn't romantic
37:40I think we recognised
37:42A vulnerability
37:43In each other
37:46That we were sort of
37:47I think at that time trying to
37:51Escape
37:53I was locked into a kind of lifestyle
37:56That was becoming increasingly problematic
38:01But with Kylie
38:04I could see the world
38:08In a positive way
38:15Thank you
38:15Thank you
38:16I'd like to invite now
38:17Miss Kylie Minogue to come up here
38:23And I think she wanted to
38:25Break free from
38:27The sort of constraints that she thought she was imprisoned by
38:35The prisoner of an image
38:40That she was a sort of brainless
38:43Pop
38:44Pablum, you know
38:46Mush
38:46But she had
38:48Things to say
38:50Particularly with the lyrics
38:52It's like the most important thing you can do really
38:55And if you're writing your own lyrics
38:57You don't have other people's thoughts coming out of your mouth
38:59Sort of defining yourself in a way
39:01You don't have
39:02Nick Cave says to me
39:04Where are your lyrics?
39:07Not really fully fleshed somewhere yet
39:10If you feel things then you're able to write them
39:13So I hope you do that, Kylie
39:17You know what I did find?
39:19Lyrics
39:21I remember trying to write something
39:23That would talk to me
39:28I wanted to be your lonesome cowboy
39:30I wanted to love you till it hurt
39:32That was a lyric
39:34That's not my writing
39:35Someone else has written in my book
39:36She wanted to be stopped in time suspended
39:38It was the best ever night
39:40That obviously didn't make it
39:42I mean
39:44It's really terrible
39:45This is going to sound really terrible when I say it out loud
39:48You just can't wait, can you?
39:50Who would have thought
39:52That little girl
39:53Would end up living out her wildest dreams
39:56Sometimes it sounds really not so great saying it
39:59There's a lot of absolute tosh in here
40:02There's got to be something in here
40:05Huh
40:07I wanted to sometimes be
40:10Irresponsible
40:11I wanted to own the choice I made
40:14Quite revealing
40:16In what way?
40:19It's not self-explanatory
40:21It's not very revealing at all
40:26But then I caught something from the creative ether
40:29Got up in this house
40:31Drapped my very old self
40:32It felt like
40:34A fire
40:37Was just like coming out of me
40:38Oh gosh
40:42It was like contained
40:45Rage
40:49I wanted to find a way to put an end to all of my destruction
40:52I wanted to know what I was worth
40:56She really was
40:57She, I
40:58I was just really in it
41:04I wasn't separate to the song
41:06Well, I would make it slower and shorter
41:09Well, I would make it slower and shorter
41:12I really wanted to be more than one facet
41:16I have so many characters lurking in my body
41:19It's frightening
41:21I'm possessed
41:26It was much more on the edge
41:30I was very on the edge, clearly
41:32I didn't want to say it
41:37What do you mean?
41:38Tell me too much too hard
41:41Her new album
41:43Two years in the making
41:45Let's get this lady out here
41:47The impossible princess herself
41:48Ladies and gentlemen
41:49Carly Manon
41:52Have you totally disown those really early songs now?
41:55I've actually not been able to say I should be so lucky in so many years
41:59And in a way it was a slight exorcism
42:04There was an honesty and a purity and a
42:07I'm just putting it all out there
42:10It's definitely the most personal work I've ever done
42:15Is that more nerve-wracking when it goes out?
42:18Yeah, scary
42:23And then I saw a billboard
42:25You don't know about the billboard
42:29There was a billboard that said
42:32We've decided what to do with Kylie's music
42:36Don't play it
42:38Boom!
42:41A royal slap
42:44Quick test for sound, you alright?
42:45Yeah, go on
42:46One, two, three, four, five, hello, here we are at Tower Records
42:48You started?
42:49Yep, it's about to
42:50Sorry
42:52Thank you
42:53Okay
42:54Kylie, if we could first start by asking you about the new album
42:56I don't think I was on the radio at all
42:59How did it all come about?
43:01Um, in fact
43:03Some stations were actively not playing me
43:09In the house tonight, wielding the new Mojica, Jason Donovan
43:12You have to talk about Kylie Minogue
43:13Do you follow her career?
43:15Have you turned her kind of venture with the latest album into doing some indie stuff?
43:18What do you think of that?
43:19It hasn't worked, I don't think
43:23Kylie! Kylie!
43:32Some people just want to
43:37Watch you crumble and they're on to the next person
43:39Pop, disposable, pop, disposable
43:42Other team sensations seem to have come gone
43:44What do you think your appeal is?
43:45I mean, those
43:47Disappear
43:48You'd be better off asking other people that than me
43:50I can't be that self-analytical
43:55Many, many times I just thought
43:57I just honestly don't know if this is worth it
44:01Just tell me about the album though
44:02It's got overly imaginative type
44:06And the minute you start trying to defend yourself
44:11They've won
44:17Excuse me, where are you from?
44:19Is that a serious question?
44:21Yeah
44:21Is there any truth that we're not talking?
44:23I find that so ridiculous
44:28Do you think she's had it really in terms of the music industry?
44:31I never thought she had it in the first place really
44:34I was making deconstruction, no money
44:37Zippo, nada
44:39Rien, nothing
44:40So
44:42She's off the books
44:44I thought
44:45I'm gonna act again
44:47Because there was enough people
44:49Who were thinking if not saying
44:52That's it
44:52It's done
45:15I got a phone call
45:17And yeah
45:22I don't remember what words she said
45:24But it was like
45:26He's gone
45:33I got the flight back to Sydney
45:35For the funeral
45:39I just went
45:41Oh
45:42That's another first
45:43This is my first
45:45Service that I've been to
45:47Like
45:48Okay
45:49Always with the firsts
45:50You know
45:56We gather
45:57To mourn the death
46:00Of someone
46:01Whom most of us
46:03Barely knew
46:07We listened to him sing
46:11And felt that it was for us alone
46:15We're here today
46:16To mourn the death
46:19Of Michael Hutchence
46:24It might seem disproportionate
46:26The emotion and the memories I have
46:29With him and with that time
46:34But I just felt protected and nurtured and valued and believed in
46:43Someone you counted on is gone
46:47I remember being at the church and it was overwhelming
46:51The outpouring of love for him
46:53Someone who was your rock
46:55Is no more
46:56That's going to sound totally crazy but
46:58I felt him just saying
47:00It's okay
47:02It will be okay
47:06I always feel he's with me
47:11It's kind of crazy but I do
47:16You know
47:17Which is so like
47:18You can
47:20Have relationships with
47:23As I have had
47:24You know relationships with different people
47:25But someone that really just believed in
47:29Believes in you so much
47:35Here's an important point
47:37He really didn't want me to be
47:40Someone else for him
47:42At all
47:44He was encouraging me
47:48To discover me
47:49On the other hand
48:00At all
48:14I had a kind of harebrained idea
48:18Now, without further ado, I'd like to introduce the first of the talented and totally diverse artists.
48:25I was asked to go and perform at this thing called the Poetry Olympics.
48:29Two days and nights of continuous poetry that was put on that at the Albert Hall.
48:39Here is a love that makes its bargain with bad habits.
48:43Tell me lies about Vietnam.
48:46You can have sex with anyone, but with whom can you sleep?
48:53This had some great poets in it, but mostly it was just this endless, worthy art.
49:02When I take off my head, the head looks into my bleeding neck.
49:08A fucking baby's fucking crying, a fucking flower's fucking dying.
49:11I thought you were so kind of a nice.
49:13People have been sitting in their chairs, I think, for, you know, a day listening to this poetry.
49:23I was seeing Kylie quite a bit.
49:27And I'm like, why don't you come along and recite something?
49:31I was thinking, are you mad?
49:35The sword of Damocles is hanging over all of us.
49:38This is not my world.
49:40I'm not, I'm not from the literary world.
49:42In view of that, what subject can we sensibly discuss?
49:47So I tried everything to get out of it.
49:50She said she tried to get out of it.
49:52Oh, really?
49:54We weren't having any of that.
49:56For what is liberty without the liberty to act?
50:00And I said to Nick, God's on stage, how do we follow that?
50:05He said, Jesus did okay.
50:07And then he went out.
50:15The way I remember it is that, which, which, I'm surprised I can remember anything at all
50:20because we were so out of it.
50:22Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.
50:30You're about to bring on the flame-like Tony Manon, ladies and gentlemen.
50:37She walked on, this pop princess, up against the most elitist art form there is of poetry.
50:49Well, I didn't expect to be here, but I have come with words that I did not write, which
50:57I shall read to you.
51:10In my imagination, there is no hesitation.
51:15I dream about you all the time.
51:19And I could hear the recognition that the audience, they were with me and with us.
51:27In my imagination, there is no complication.
51:31We walk together hand in hand.
51:33She just broke the night open.
51:35And I'm dreaming that you're in love with me.
51:38With poetry that we could understand.
51:44I should be so lucky.
51:48Lucky, lucky, lucky.
51:52I should be so lucky in love.
51:59It was like being face-to-face with my old self.
52:05The one that I was trying to turn my back on.
52:10I don't know if I said this outright, but I, you know, I'm like, what the fuck are you
52:14doing?
52:14Like, Indy?
52:16I mean, no one willingly wants to be Indy.
52:24They may say they do.
52:32But that's not what Kylie is, you know.
52:36Kylie is this force.
52:43That is there to affect thousands and thousands and thousands of people.
52:57You have an enormous positive influence.
53:01These people that go along to their first pop concert, it's a life-changing moment where
53:07they feel something that they've never known before.
53:13The great beauty of pop music is that it is a joy machine.
53:22You've got the coolest guy on the planet saying, where's the pop tunes?
53:33Right, let's get the jetpacks on and let's get back to the dance floor.
53:39But if this doesn't work, I am finished.
