00:28jackie robinson day it's the tampa bay rays going up against the chicago white sox john shabby and
00:35chris singleton with you chris today a special day on the major league baseball calendar jackie
00:40robinson day everyone on the field wearing number 42 to honor jackie and his breaking of the
00:45professional baseball color barrier in 1947 with the brooklyn dodgers it's a great day for
00:52everyone in terms of just the unity that it helped to bring forth within our country and
00:58a lot of times that's done through sport but for me as a black player when i think about jackie
01:03robinson and i think about the connection of such a great player and all of the adversity that he had
01:09to endure baseball's hard enough just to play but then everything sort of on the field off the field
01:14and how he persevered through that so inspiring first pitch coming at you right after the break
01:22and getting the start for the white sox sean burke a power pitcher that is going to pitch
01:29aggressively with the fastball his fastball velocity ranks near the top in the league
01:33tonight will also throw the slider but if you're a hitter number be ready for the fastball you're
01:37going to see a few of them during your bat just about to get underway yandy diaz now at the

06:53strike thrower or like this guy on the mound you can't be overly patient as a hitter because
06:59the umpire is generally going to give him the benefit of the doubt so you got to go up there
07:04understand what's in his repertoire be aggressive in what you can handle and you get three swing

13:04teammates are happy with you after that at bat sam antonacci swings through it for strike one

13:24in comes the run from third to add on it's an rbi single and they take a three run lead
13:31puts a run on the board and picks up an rbi and now they've got some speed on first so

13:37see if they try to get them into motion back to the top of the white socks lineup
13:41here's the second baseman chase my draw that one found hard the other way

14:20right there you're usually trying to be aggressive on balls in the dirt trying to get into scoring
14:24position but if it doesn't get away very far or you can't tell how far it is most catchers are
14:29going
14:29to get to it and throw you out at the base and right there excellent job by the catcher
14:34he helps out his pitcher big time out of line out towards center reaching for it and brings it in
14:42but they pick up one run on the rbi single it's now three nothing

15:05you know singing when you think about every player wearing number 42 on jackie robinson day
15:10you can thank ken griffey jr for all of it griffey was the first player to come up with the
15:15idea of
15:16wearing number 42 back on april 15th in 1997 the 50th anniversary of robinson's major league debut
15:23simpson not happy about that called strike here's the challenge and that one was indeed a strike that

23:38save and they add to their lead as the run scores from third that play really shows how important it
23:45is to hit the cutoff man looked like he tried to throw through and get the runner at home but
23:49it backfired
23:50it ended up costing them a lot I remember my rookie year overthrowing the cutoff man didn't last long before
23:57I was pulled aside by a veteran pitcher he had a talk with me I don't know if I ever
24:01missed a cutoff man again

24:09on to the top of the fifth we go White Sox for the Rays nothing

24:28well these Rays just lacking discipline at the plate in this ballgame they've been chasing pitches outside
24:34the zone all game and it's led to some frustrating moments they've been fooled quite a bit today
24:42slapped foul
24:58and a base hit into right center field
25:03and they have their first hit since the second inning really nice job a two-strike hitting and that at
25:08bat nice line drive to the pole side right there but he didn't spin off of it that's the key
25:13you still have to do it
25:13he'll have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that
25:17and now Hunter Produccio
25:22hey question if you had to pick because the number 42 jerseys are really cool obviously Jackie Robinson but if
25:29you had to pick any team that you were going to have 42 put on to just kind of sport
25:34around
25:35would it be a Phillies jersey because I know you were kind of a Phillies fan growing up
25:38I grew up as a Phillies fan if I had to do a 42 jersey though I'd still think I'd
25:43do a Dodger jersey
25:44yeah 0-2 now popped up

26:05one out man at first digging in it's the speedy outfielder Chandler Simpson
26:10he's all for one
26:20and that's downstairs and that's ball one Chris he's currently the team leader in stolen bases

26:44batting practice over and over again
26:46sometimes at game speed you can still mess it up could have been two outs instead they get nothing

26:59how about you you know what I'd actually like to uh I mean the Dodgers Brooklyn Dodgers is right
27:04it's pretty awesome that one is but I also would be interested in looking
27:09this one swung on and hit well way back there

29:34and there's one down every day during batting practice these outfielders get about 10 minutes
29:39of balls in the gaps they practice this and when the game comes they make the play perfectly
