00:00The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has issued a statutory demand to TikTok
00:05over its failure to moderate offensive and defamatory content, especially content involving
00:10the royal institution. MCMC cited a fake TikTok account that posted fake and offensive content
00:17targeting the young Deeputuan Agung, including videos and images manipulated or generated by
00:22artificial intelligence. The commission said TikTok must take immediate remedial measures,
00:27strengthen its content moderation mechanisms, enforce Malaysian laws and community standards
00:33more effectively, and provide a formal explanation for its moderation failures.
00:37Yesterday, the Johor Royal Press Office urged MCMC to take firm action over a TikTok account making
00:43fake, defamatory, and insulting content against the Agung. It said the fake account, with the username
00:49Sultan Ibrahim Ismail, had posted images of the Agung alongside false claims suggesting that he
00:55enjoys eating pork. This came less than a month after the circulation of a Facebook post featuring
01:01an edited image of a pig in royal attire. The Salonga Royal Council condemned the post, saying
01:06the perpetrator had acted in a provocative manner that constituted a grave insult to the
01:11royal institution and could undermine harmony in the state's multi-ethnic population.
