00:00The U.S. government has denied involvement in the decision by the Norwegian government
00:04and Norwegian defense company Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace to cancel its delivery of a naval
00:10strike missile system to Malaysia.
00:13News reports have suggested that U.S. made restricted components embedded in Norwegian
00:17NSMs, particularly advanced guidance gyroscopes, may have triggered U.S. export controls, allowing
00:23Washington an indirect veto over the deal.
00:26However, David H. Gamble Jr., Sharjit Affairs of the U.S. Embassy in Malaysia, said the
00:31U.S. supported Malaysia's acquisition of a naval strike capability to respond to regional
00:36threats and to protect its sovereignty.
00:38In a statement today, Gamble said the U.S. even facilitated the integration of the necessary
00:43guidance components for the NSMs to Kongsberg in 2024 to ensure the system's delivery to
00:49Malaysia.
00:50According to the U.S. Naval Institute, the NSMs were scheduled for delivery to Malaysia in
00:55early March.
00:56It said Malaysian officials were, however, notified of unspecified delays.
01:01Defense Minister Khalid Nordin said on Tuesday that Malaysia was seeking more than 1 billion
01:06ringgit in compensation from Kongsberg in direct and indirect costs.
01:10He said the government had already made payments amounting to 95% of the total procurement value
01:15of 634 million ringgit.
