00:00Former Penang Deputy Chief Minister P. Ramasamy today urged the government and Chinese educationists
00:06to look for an out-of-the-box solution to break the deadlock on the Unified Examination Certificate.
00:13In a statement, Ramasamy said he agreed that the UEC should undergo some modifications to
00:18pave the way for its recognition for entry into public universities, including mandating a pass
00:24or credit in Bahasa, Melayu or another subject taught in the national language.
00:30The former DAP leader expressed confidence that the United Chinese School Committee's Association of Malaysia,
00:37also known as Dongzong, would not oppose this if it meant federal recognition of the UEC.
00:43He said that aside from the medium of instruction, the UEC, which is accepted in Sabah and Sarawak
00:50for entrance to state-run universities, is not very different from the Sijil Tingyi Persekolahan Malaysia
00:55or A-Level, the latter of which is taught in English.
01:00He said there are those who think that given the probability of China overtaking the U.S. in the near future,
01:07there will be a future for learning Mandarin, and if the UEC is examined from a broad perspective,
01:13there is nothing wrong in recognizing the qualification.
01:17The issue was revived last week when DAP Deputy Chairman Ngakong Ming said
01:22party leaders would meet Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to discuss recognition of the examination.
