00:31Well, good afternoon. Welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:34Oh, school exams. You probably absolutely adored them.
00:39I didn't really adore them that much.
00:41I wonder if young children these days like them, because I've got a story for you.
00:45Primary school teachers, all the little students, little pupils, were due to sit an exam.
00:51When they all sat down, maybe they were nervous. In my day, I was terrified.
00:56They turned the exam paper over, and do you know what the test was?
01:00It said, the class had been tricked into thinking they're taking an exam today when, in fact, we're going to
01:07a theme park.
01:08And the question is, is Mr Bacon, A, the best teacher ever, or B, the best teacher ever?
01:17And they'd cocked this up between them, the staff, and the parents, too, of course.
01:22And off they all went to a theme park for the day. What a joy.
01:25Oh, that's great.
01:26School trips were the best.
01:28I know.
01:29What's the best surprise that somebody's treated you to, if you can tell us on national television?
01:34Oh, Pat is really good with surprises, actually, especially birthdays.
01:38Yes.
01:38So one birthday, he surprised me.
01:40We were in the States skiing, and I thought we were about to order pudding, and he just got the
01:44bill, so I didn't even get to order.
01:46So I was a little bit miffed at that.
01:48Yeah.
01:48And got outside, and he had this crazy taxi waiting, which had these silly goggles and silly music, and drove
01:53us all around, and it was good fun.
01:54Oh, fun.
01:55And then a couple of years after that, we were skiing again in France, and he arranged for a dog
02:00sled ride.
02:02Brilliant.
02:02Which was absolutely gorgeous, and the dogs were all looked after really well, and there was, I think there were
02:07maybe seven or eight, and then one didn't want to run with the pack, so we just got to run
02:10by the side and have a great time.
02:12But it was lovely.
02:13And you were in a sled?
02:14We were in a sled, and we got to cuddle all the dogs, and yeah, anything with dogs, and I'm,
02:18you know, I love it.
02:19So that was a really lovely surprise he arranged.
02:22Excellent.
02:22He's a good boy.
02:23He is a delightful man, your passion.
02:25We like him a lot.
02:27Who's with us?
02:27Andy Evans is back.
02:28Andy, how are you?
02:29I'm good, thanks.
02:30Four good wins up at the University of Leeds.
02:33What are you going to do when you graduate, having studied politics there?
02:36Absolutely no idea at the moment.
02:37You don't fancy politics, do you?
02:39It's a dirty game, isn't it?
02:40It's a dirty game.
02:41It appears to be a filthy game, actually.
02:44It's total war.
02:45Yeah.
02:45Yeah, yeah.
02:47Now, you're joined, when it comes to war, you're joined by somebody who's warlike.
02:52Abby Arrowsmith, a wonderful and fascinating story.
02:55A teaching assistant from WEM in Shropshire.
02:59Yes.
03:00But also, you're a trainee professional wrestler.
03:02Yeah.
03:03With APW in Telford, and you're the manager of your partner's tag team.
03:09You have to train a lot for that.
03:11Learn how to fall, how to hold, and all the rest of it.
03:13A lot of training.
03:15Yeah, the first few times it is just, you have to learn how to fall, which is the most, you
03:19know,
03:19your body is so unnatural to make yourself fall, but, and yeah, it feels like you've had whiplash
03:25for the first few sessions.
03:26I'm sure.
03:26You get used to it, and it does get addictive.
03:29Well, good luck to you today.
03:30And if that Andy Evans gives you any trouble, pin him to the floor.
03:36Look, Andy and Abby, welcome.
03:38Welcome to Countdown.
03:39Big round of applause for our contestants.
03:44Wonderful.
03:45Right over in the corner, Susie, of course, with award-winning news presenter, Nina Hussain.
03:50Welcome back, Nina.
03:56Now, four wins, Andy.

05:12I blame Monday, I'm afraid.
05:15Parboil and Implore, a couple more sevens.
05:18Yeah.
05:18And we had this one on Friday, actually.
05:20Pro-email is there for an eight, meaning before a preamble to a song or an essay, that kind of
05:26thing.
05:29Seven apiece.
05:30OK, Abby.
05:31Off we go.

06:53Nina, Susie?
06:54I got the fluent, but then didn't manage to get any more than that.
06:58There is an eight there, which statisticians will recognise.
07:03It's a quantile.
07:05And in statistics, it's a set of values dividing things into frequency distribution.
07:10So a quartile or a percentile, they're all examples of a quantile.
07:2014 plays seven.

08:44Er, well, you could have said 8 times 8 is 64.
08:50Add the 7 for 71.
08:526 minus 4 is 2.
08:5473.
08:55Times that by 10 for 730, but this one was impossible,

12:31Sorry.
12:32All right.
12:33So, Andy on 20, Abby on 19.
12:36Just one point in it.
12:37Abby, your numbers game now.
12:39Could I have two large and four small, please?
12:41You can indeed, thank you, Abby.
12:43Two from the top four, little.

13:54Good.
13:55Still only a point, isn't it?
13:5629 to, uh, and he's 30 as we turn to, uh, Nina.
14:01Nina, I hear you went to lunch.
14:04A royal lunch.
14:05What happened?
14:06Clarence House, I think.
14:07Yeah, I mean, I haven't quite hired a helicopter, as you have done in my career so far.
14:13But, in this industry, you get to do some special things and go to some special places.
14:18And I got this invite to, um, it was a celebration of some fantastic women who'd, uh, achieved through adversity
14:25or in their careers.
14:26And I was lucky enough to, uh, be invited to go along.
14:29One of those pinch yourself moments, I think.
14:31And, um, on arrival, we went through security.
14:34You know, you hand your phone over, you hand your coat over.
14:37And we went through to a room and we met the Duchess of Cornwall.
14:40And then we were ushered into another room where all the women were.
14:43Handed a glass of bubbles and, um, encouraged to mingle.
14:47All fine so far.
14:48Uh, the canapes arrive.
14:49And I'm such a clumsy clot that I was there with my glass and my bag.
14:53And I just thought, I can't quite manage this dish of food and a fork.
14:57So, I'll, I'll, you know, I'll, I'll politely decline.
15:00We stayed there for another half an hour, I guess.
15:02Moved around the room.
15:03Some more dishes were delivered.
15:05The food looked amazing, of course.
15:07Um, and again, I just thought, I'll just pass on the food.
15:10It's fine.
15:10I'll wait until we have lunch.
15:12We were then moved through to the hallway, the grand staircase.
15:15And Camilla and a few more people made some incredible speeches.
15:19I was even more inspired.
15:20And then we were asked to leave.
15:23No rush, but if, if you could make your way out and collect your phones and, and coats.
15:28And there was just that moment of realisation that I'd actually missed the lunch.
15:36It was that, you know, this very on-trend bowl food.
15:39We do it all standing up now.
15:41And, uh, so there is such thing as a free lunch, even a royal free lunch.
15:45Um, but not what I was expecting.
15:47So I left smiling at my own stupidity and very hungry.
15:52My lunch at Clarence's house.
15:53Not what I was expecting.
15:55Oh, what a shame.
15:56What the hell are you?

18:59Put the S on it, obviously.
19:01But, yes, absolutely fine.
19:03Nina and Susie.

20:43Yeah, lovely.
20:44Lots of weights for this one.
20:45Well done.
20:50So, 55 to 39 as we steam into our second Tea Time teaser, which is minor term.
20:59And the clue, it sounds like Robin Hood's gang were full of fun and jollity.
21:03It sounds like Robin Hood's gang were full of fun and jollity.

22:50few more though. Coerced. Yes. And Susie? Cordite is there, and also ecocide, which is destruction of the environment, especially
22:58when it's deliberate.
22:59Yeah. 62 to 46. Andy, your letters game. Consonant, please. Thank you, Andy. R. And another. N. And another. W.
23:14And a vowel. O. And another. A. And another. O. And a fourth. I. Consonant. T.
23:27And a final consonant, please. A final S. Stand by.
23:33A final consonant, please.
24:03Andy? 7. Abby? Just a 6. Your 6, Abby? Strain. Andy? Rations. Yes. What news from the corner, I wonder?
24:14Nina, Susie?
24:15I was really struggling on this one, but Clever Susie got a couple of 8s. Well, you can put an
24:20O in front of rations and have orations. That will give you one more. And this is one of Nick's
24:26least favourite words. Waitrons are there as well. That is the gender-neutral term for a member of your waiting
24:33staff.
24:33Indeed. Waitrons. Nonsense. Thank you very much. 69 to 46. Susie. Susie. Is that time of day again? When you
24:44deliver one of your perfect origins of words essays.
24:47I'm going to talk about bears today. Because bears have preoccupied our imagination for absolutely centuries. And there is proof
24:55of this in English. So we go right back to the beginning.
25:00The Latin for bear was Ursus. U-R-S-U-S. And that inspired the name of the great bear,
25:06the constellation in the sky, Ursa Major, also called the Big Dipper or the Plough.
25:12You might know it that way. And the Greek for a bear was Arctos. Now, that gave us the star
25:18Arcturus, which means guardian of the bear, because it was situated behind Ursa Major.
25:24And Arctic, of course, the Arctic region, which is shown by the northern constellation of the great bear.
25:33Also gave us the name Arthur, incidentally, in Celtic. So far, so good.
25:39But when it comes to Germanic-speaking peoples and English-speaking nations are descended from Germanic-speaking peoples, it's a
25:47really different story.
25:48And I think it's quite fascinating. So in English, we call a bear a bear. We also used to call
25:53it Bruin.
25:55Sometimes that was a less common name for it. In German, you have bear with an omelette. In Dutch, you
25:59have beer.
26:00So it's all very, very similar. These appear in personal names and sometimes in place names as well.
26:06So some people think that Berlin, Berlin in German, might be related in some way to the bear, to the
26:11emblem of the city, and Bern in Switzerland as well.
26:15Might possibly. We're not completely sure about this.
26:17But all of these words translate roughly to the brown one.
26:22And that's pretty much what they all go back to.
26:25And what we think is that people rarely brought themselves to refer to bears directly.
26:30Instead, they tiptoed around it and referred to it as the brown one.
26:35And as I said, this trickles through all Germanic languages.
26:38And linguists think that the name of the bear was somehow a taboo.
26:42Why? We're not sure. But it was not to be spoken directly.
26:47Perhaps hunters didn't want to kind of warn the bear that it was coming or they didn't want to rile
26:51up the bear.
26:52Well, they didn't want to summon it. If they had to kind of supernatural beliefs around it, perhaps they didn't
26:56want to speak its name in case they summoned its presence.
26:59And we know that people were absolutely terrified of bears, quite rightly.
27:02And the ancient Finns also held it very, very sacred.
27:06So to this day, there is a feast, his name I really can't pronounce in Finnish, which is giving us
27:14a sort of ritual that's meant to appease the bear and help it ascend back to the sky involving a
27:19sort of burning of bears if they manage to find one.
27:22So whatever the details, this taboo obviously works so well that there's no trace of the absolute ancient name for
27:29bear, which kind of disappeared many, many centuries ago in the Germanic languages.
27:34The Greeks and the Romans, clearly, had no problem with bears at all.
27:37I think used to encounter them in daily life.
27:40But for us, it will always be the brown one.
27:42And some people think it's the earliest euphemism ever recorded.
27:53And the girl's name Ursula, presumably, comes out.
27:56Ursula, yeah.
27:5769 to 46, and he's in the leader right.
27:59It's Abby's chance now to climb back.
28:03Abby, letters game.
28:04Start with a consonant, please.

29:28I suppose.
29:28Yeah.
29:28Since the Human Genome Project.
29:29We probably didn't really know much about it before then.
29:32We're learning a lot more about it now, aren't we?
29:34Genesic material.
29:35Anything else?
29:35Makes us us.

33:20Well, let's see whether you're right.
33:22I'm sadly not.
33:23So the rest of the time,
33:24all of it, use it wisely,
33:26Abby, it's down to you.
33:29No luck?
33:30Two good players,
33:31but who in the audience?
33:33I see lots of hands.
33:35I'm going to go for the gentleman there.
