00:31Good afternoon and welcome to Countdown Studio. Do you know something? It's 140 years ago, Rachel, you'd be amazed, since
00:39the Blackpool Illuminations were first switched on.
00:42And to think what's happening now compared with way back in 1879, the council decided that they'd spruce the place
00:52up and get a bit of excitement going.
00:53They threw £5,000 at the new idea of Illuminations and they installed eight arc lights, street lighting, revolutionary.
01:04And this was called, I love the idea, it was known as Artificial Sunlight. Amazing, isn't it?
01:11Just eight lights started it off. Mind you, eight lights for £5,000 in 1879. That was a lot of
01:19money. Have you ever been to Blackpool?
01:21I have and I went to see the Illuminations when I was young because my grandma, well, my grandma and
01:26granddad were from around here, from Salford.
01:28I remember my parents saying, we're going to drive over. And I've got a vivid memory.
01:31It must have been very little because they had, you know how they kind of, they go in stories if
01:36you go along as you're travelling along.
01:37And they had old people, starting old and regressing back to babies in the womb and then, I think, disappearing.
01:44And I thought it was the most terrifying thing in the world.
01:47I remember old I was. That was too much for me. I didn't like it.
01:50All right. Who's here? That young Andy is here, who scored 100 on his debut in the Countdown Studio.
01:58Fantastic performance, first time out. Brilliant.
02:00Thank you. Student at Politics, University of Leeds from Newbury down in that beautiful county of Berkshire.
02:07You're having fun. You enjoyed it. Of course, yeah, definitely.
02:10Good for you. Great time.
02:11Thanks for confidence. And so you should have.
02:13You're joined by Gerry Gray. Gerry from Bedfordshire, retired prison officer from Potton in Bedfordshire.
02:20Potton, yeah.
02:20Now, you're a big bloke and you sing a lot.
02:22I do indeed, yeah.
02:23You sing with the Opus 18, which is Bedford's choral society.
02:27What sort of repertoire is the society?
02:28Well, we cover all races from classical music to songs from shows.
02:35Yeah.
02:35A bit of pop here and there.

14:09It's good.
14:10Now, what about this golfing of yours?
14:11Oh, don't.
14:13Do you know, I've played golf for the best part of 50 years.
14:19And whenever you're around your mates or friends or whatever, other golfers, they're always going on about hole-in-ones.
14:30Oh, I've had three.
14:32You know, I've had three hole-in-ones.
14:33I've had four and so on.
14:35Well, I had never had a hole-in-one.
14:40Now, I imagined that if I ever did, I would hit a fabulous shot, which would soar in the air,
14:49and come down on the green, a couple of bounces, and then roll quietly into the hole,
14:57and all my mates would go bananas and...
15:01Well, I did have a hole-in-one last year.
15:06I hit the ball, and it never came more than two feet off the ground.
15:13It went along like a Barnes-Wallace bouncing bong.
15:17Bong-ing-ing along, bong-ing along.
15:20It was sort of straight-ish.
15:23It hit a bank on the left-hand side of the green.
15:29Came off, continued to bounce, and then, like a rat down a drainpipe, it flew into the hole.

25:50And, uh, drunkenness
25:52Um, and that's money
25:54Uh, so slang terms
25:55For money
25:55Are, um, everywhere
25:57And I think you might
25:58Recognise some of these
25:59Len, possibly
25:59Um, I'll start with a simple one
26:01That we all use
26:01And that's cash
26:02And that goes back
26:03To the 15th century
26:04When a cash or a kes
26:06Was a merchant's chest
26:07Or money box
26:08And eventually
26:09It was transferred
26:09To the contents
26:10Of the box
26:10Um, on to some
26:12Of the denominations
26:13Um, we have a fiver
26:15That's been around
26:16Uh, since the 1840s
26:18Obviously for a five pound note
26:19But it used to be
26:20Thieves slang
26:21For a fifth spell
26:22In prison
26:23Likewise a tenner
26:24Originally meant
26:25Ten years of penal servitude
26:27Quid
26:28One of the most enduring
26:29Uh, terms
26:30Goes back to the 17th century
26:31Um, a pound
26:32Obviously
26:33And that probably
26:34Goes back to the latin
26:35Quid
26:35Meaning what
26:36With what one needs
26:37Is a kind of unspoken
26:38Add on to that one
26:39These are ones
26:40I didn't know
26:41Until I researched it
26:42A rhino
26:42Um, that's a 400 term
26:45For, uh, money
26:46Of various denominations
26:48Like a pony
26:48Like a monkey
26:49Which is sort of
26:50They've kind of
26:50Hovered around
26:51A little bit
26:53Possibly linked
26:53To the value
26:54Of rhino horn
26:55Uh, very cruelly
26:56In, in days gone by
26:57And finally
26:58Rhyming slang
26:59Which I love
26:59And Len knows
27:00A lot of these
27:01Cock and hen
27:01For ten
27:02Jack's alive
27:03For five
27:04Bag of sand
27:05Grand
27:05Grand
27:06Um, and Pavarotti
27:09A tenor
27:10And Pavarotti
27:11A tenor
27:12And possibly my favourite
27:13Because you have to
27:13Work really, really hard
27:14To unpack this one
27:15A commodore
27:16Okay, so a commodore
27:18You have to know
27:18That cottony rhyming slang
27:19For a fiver
27:20Is a lady
27:21Godiva
27:21And the commodores
27:23Sang three times
27:24A lady
27:24So three times
27:25A lady
27:26Godiva
27:26Is fifteen pounds
27:28Very good
27:29What a good thing
27:34Excellent
27:37That really is fun
