00:31Well, good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:34Technology, Rachel, my word, it develops at such a speed.
00:38And what I'm about to tell you is fascinating because only 60 years ago, the first photocopier was invented.
00:45Xerox, the American company did. It was called the Xerox 915.
00:49Oh, what a revolution it was. Extraordinary.
00:52And it's quite expensive, actually. I think I'm right in saying that it was $27,500.
00:58Of course, nowadays, you know, photocopiers have just changed beyond all recognition.
01:03And, you know, in a way, you know, with computers and printers and all the rest of it, the need
01:08for them has minimised.
01:09But do you still own anything that's been long obsolete?
01:13I don't.
01:14I don't. You just chuck them out, don't you? The old Walkman and then it's the CD player.
01:18I haven't even got a DVD player anymore. I haven't even got a CD drive for my computer.
01:22You don't really need them anymore.
01:24So occasionally people have bought me, you know, music compilations on CD.
01:28And it's like, what am I going to do with this?
01:30It's a nice little coaster.
01:31It's the old adage, you know, everything is possible is never more true than today, really, with technology.
01:38It's incredible. It's incredible.
01:40Let's see whether Sarah Dillap is going to be incredible.
01:43How are you after your lazy weekend, I hope?
01:46Very well, thank you.
01:47Yeah, you're well rested and you're looking now for your seventh win.
01:51Things are getting serious, aren't they?
01:53Very.
01:54All right.
01:55Well, listen, have a good day today, Sarah, from Gateshead.
01:59I'm sure the town is poised now for your latest victory.
02:02Let's see.
02:03But you're joined by Matt Sykes.
02:04Welcome, Matt.
02:06Financial advisor from Wakefield.
02:08But you're a footballer, semi-pro footballer with Worksop Town.
02:12Yes, that's right.
02:13How are they doing?
02:14Yeah, brilliant.
02:15Promoted last season and, yeah, I'm staying there.
02:18Really good.
02:19And whereabouts on the field do you play?
02:21I'm left midfield.
02:23Okay.
02:24Yeah.
02:24So you're very cleverly then setting aside a profession for when your playing days are over.
02:31Yes, very wise.
02:32Yeah, the football doesn't quite pay the bills.
02:35So, yeah, I've got a side profession.
02:37Good for you.
02:38To keep me going.
02:39Well, well done, both of you.
02:41Good luck to you both.
02:42Big round of applause now for Sarah and Matt.
02:48And Susie over in the corner, having had a decent weekend, joined once again by that wonderful character.
02:55I guess he's the nation's favourite dancer.
02:58It's Len Goodman.
02:59Thank you, Len.
03:04It's great to have you back.
03:05Great to have you back.
03:07Sarah.

04:29an eight. Yes. Laments. Ah. Yeah. Laments. And? Oh, this is not a foreign word then. No.

05:56Yes, Matt. Um, a risky five. Sarah. Just a four. And your four is? Fifty. No, this risk of yours,
06:05Matt. Toady. Um, Toady is absolutely fine. How are you spelling it? Um, T-O-A-D-Y. Yeah, absolutely
06:14fine. Yeah, to Toady up to someone. Very good.
06:17No. No. Len and Susie. And it's how I feel right now. Atomic. What a... Go on. Yeah. I could
06:26eat a great big bowl of semolina.

20:43Well done.
20:476, 5, 8 indeed.
20:50Which, rather neatly, puts you only one point behind Matt.
20:5443 to his.
20:5544 as we turn to our second Tea Time teaser, which is Gene's Bits and the Clue.
21:00This could be produced by a West Yorkshire farmer who's an expert in the udders field.
21:06This could be produced by a West Yorkshire farmer who's an expert in the udders field.
21:29Welcome back.
21:30And if you had the clue, this could be produced by a West Yorkshire farmer who's an expert in the
21:35udders field.
21:35And the answer, strangely, Susie, is bee stings.
21:41Yes.
21:42What is bee stings?
21:43Nothing to do with bees.
21:44This is the first milk produced by a cow or a goat as well after giving birth.
21:49And it's related to a German word, Beastmilch, which means beast milk, literally.
21:55So, yes, the very first milk produced after giving birth.
21:59I see.
22:00Fine.
22:0244 plays 43.

23:14Now, what's this eight, Matt?
23:16Guilders?
23:17Guilders.
23:20Absolutely brilliant, yes.
23:22So, basic monetary unit of the Netherlands is still in the dictionary,
23:26and this is before the era, obviously,
23:28or historically a gold or silver coin formerly used in the Netherlands as well.
23:31Very good.
23:37Good win.
23:38Good win on that one.
23:40Lennon, Susie?
23:42Sludgier.

23:45Not so pleasant.
23:47Susie?
23:47Not very nice.
23:48Anything else?

24:55Matt?

24:57Sarah?
24:58Faced.
24:59Matt?
25:00Fades.
25:01And fades.
25:03Can we beat five there, Len, Susie?
25:05Yes, we can.
25:07Codfish.
25:08Very good.
25:0957 plays 48.
25:12Susie, it's time for your wonderful origins of words.
25:17And today?
25:18Today I have, or I'm going to try and answer an email,
25:21from John Osler, or Osler, who says,
25:24I understand that MMR stands for measles, mumps, and rubella,
25:27but I'd like to know what the origin of these terms are.
25:31So apologies to anyone who's having a late lunch or eating at this point.
25:35Hopefully I won't put you off too much.
25:37I'll start with measles.
25:39That goes back to a Dutch word mazel, which meant a pustule, unfortunately.
25:44And actually, mazel in Dutch meant leprosy,
25:47so the same sort of link there.
25:49And a measly, in the 16th century, first described a pig that was infected with measles,
25:54and because of that, it wouldn't grow,
25:56which is why today we talk about something measly being kind of small and mean as well,
26:02in that sense.
26:03That goes back to that particular meaning.
26:06Mumps is obviously the disease that causes the swelling of the salivary glands,
26:10really unpleasant in the face.
26:12That goes back to a really old dialect word, again, meaning a grimace or a miserable expression.
26:17So you can totally understand.
26:18If you have the mumps, you are down in the dumps, literally,
26:21and also look fairly miserable because of the swelling.
26:25Rubella is the medical term for German measles.
26:29That goes back to the Latin rubellus, meaning reddish,
26:32simply referring to the rash that the disease causes.
26:34The German part of German measles is simply there because the first clinical description of the disease
26:40was made by somebody called Friedrich Hoffmann,
26:42and then it was corroborated by other German physicians.
26:44That's why Germans snuck in there.
26:47But it was an English royal artillery surgeon, Henry Veal,
26:50who described an outbreak in India,
26:52and he gave it the term rubella, again, as I say,
26:55meaning little red, referring to the rashes.
26:57So, yeah, sorry, fairly unpleasant,
27:00but that is where all of those diseases get their name.
27:02Well, well, well.
27:03Thank you, Susie.
