00:31Well, good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:35My word, things are really heating up here.
00:38It's the first semi-final of series 78.
00:41Keen rivalry here.
00:43But what about sibling rivalry, Rachel?
00:45A recent report suggested that there's a big difference
00:49between the oldest and the youngest in a family.
00:52Now, the oldest, apparently, the higher percentage of the oldest siblings
00:55said they were more responsible, more successful and more organised
01:00than their younger counterparts.
01:02I don't know whether you think that's true.
01:04The younger ones say that they're funnier, more easygoing
01:09and favoured by their parents over their older siblings.
01:12I really don't know five of us.
01:15And I think, actually, I was the most responsible,
01:19the most successful, most organised, the funniest, most easygoing
01:23and certainly favoured by my parents.
01:25How about you?
01:26Most modest.
01:27And most modest, exactly.
01:28What about you?
01:29Now, your brother is older or younger?
01:31Alex is two years younger.
01:34OK, so, are you more responsible, more successful, more organised?
01:39Alex is very funny.
01:43Is he?
01:44And he's easygoing, I think, isn't he?
01:47Oh, easygoing.
01:47I don't know.
01:48Don't even start with my brother.
01:49He's a little brother.
01:50He does what little brothers are supposed to do.
01:52All right.
01:53I did read something, actually,
01:54that talked about older siblings are more intelligent
01:57and I thought I'd send it to him and then I read down
01:59and it was because the parents give them more attention
02:01because they were born first and then, actually,
02:03we ruined it for the little one.
02:04So, I thought maybe I won't share that.
02:05Leave it alone.
02:06Yeah, yeah.
02:07Won't poke that bear.
02:08All right.
02:09Who knows?
02:10Who knows?

12:06A picot is a small loop or series of loops in ornate embroidery.

13:31That'll do.

13:3621.
13:37Add six.
13:3827.
13:38Add 100.
13:39127.
13:40Nothing to argue about.
13:42Well done.
13:45So 47 plays 40.
13:48And we link to Helen.
13:51Helen, you've been spotted on the terraces.
13:54What's going on?
13:55Well, I do like a bit of football,
13:57and I'm occasionally spotted supporting Grimsby Town,
14:00my hometown, or Cleethorpes.
14:03But I got involved a little bit over the last few months
14:05with Everton.
14:06I've been doing, helping them with their charity arm,
14:10which is called Everton in the Community.
14:12And it's incredible.
14:13I know lots of premiership sides do an awful lot
14:15for the people in their community.
14:17But Everton, what they do just has really sort of blown me away, really.
14:21It doesn't matter.
14:22You don't have to be a blues supporter, or a toffee, as they're called.
14:25If you're suffering any mental health issues, or if you're elderly and lonely, anything
14:29like that, there are things out there for you.
14:31They've even built a school for troubled youngsters.
14:35Kids that have really, you know, sort of exhausted all their comprehensive school options.
14:40And Everton have built their own school where the youngsters go to school in the training
14:43kit.
14:44And that's really helped them have a different attitude about learning.
14:46So this year is the 30th anniversary of Everton in the Community.
14:52So I hosted a dinner with, you know, most of the audience were made up of businessmen
14:56and women.
14:57And we raised almost £40,000, thanks to the generosity of all the business people in the
15:02audience.
15:02But also all the first team players, and Sam Allardyce, the manager, they were all there.
15:07They all donated things for the auction, and we're just incredibly kind.
15:12So it's been quite interesting, sort of dipping my toe into football, and, you know, that kind
15:18of football, and going to watch them play.
15:20And yeah, it's been really good fun.
15:23Excellent fun.
15:23Very impressed with what they do.
15:25Oh, the other thing is they're moving stadium in the next four years.
15:27So they'll move from Goodison Park to a dockside venue in Liverpool.
15:32But they're making sure that the community around Goodison still survives when they move,
15:38because a lot of those businesses rely on the trade from the matches.
15:42So four years, you know, before the move, they're making sure that they're very responsible
15:46about, you know, the state.
15:48They leave the local community in, and are very, you know, concerned about what Goodison
15:53will be used for.
15:54So it's been really nice, actually, working with some very impressive people and meeting,
15:59you know, we interviewed lots of people on stage who had benefited from Everton and
16:04the community.
16:05You know, perhaps ex-servicemen and women who've suffered post-traumatic stress.
16:08Anything you can think of, they have a programme or a project for.
16:12So it's been good.
16:14Really interesting.
16:14Well done, them, yeah.
16:15Great service to the community.
16:17Yeah, fantastic.
16:18And needed as well.
16:19Of course.
16:20Thank you so much.
16:21Well done.
16:22Thank you, Helen.
16:27So there's only seven points in it here.
16:29Phil and Zate, Zate on 40, Phil 47.

17:52Take Zate up to just one point behind.
17:55We've got a fight on our hands here.
17:56But over in the corner, Helen and Susie.
17:59I think it was full of sixes, wasn't it?
18:00For us two, yes.
18:01Because Weasel, you could have had, and Easily was another one.

25:44for your origins words what do you have for us today I wonder well yesterday I was talking about
25:49some of the behaviors that were associated with certain animals and how they have found their way
25:54into idiomatic expressions within English and I thought I'd talk today about one word in English
26:00that is very much associated with a particular animal and that's shrewd and many centuries ago the name of
26:08the animal the shrewd appeared in old English so we know that the animal's been around for a very long
26:13time it kind of dropped under the radar for quite a long time but then resurfaced and it resurfaced and
26:18it resurfaced and particularly because this particular animal was thought to have one very outstanding characteristic and that was that
26:25they were incredibly aggressive and quite pugnacious Chris Packham will probably tell us a bit more about this but this
26:31was very much the belief that they would fight each other to the death over any last morsel of food
26:36and then they would eat their own
26:38eat the victor would eat the defeated shrewd and they were also believed to be venomous in those days as
26:44well and that one is certainly not true but because of this pugnacity associated with the shrewd and the venomousness
26:51the term was transferred to a man or particularly a woman unfortunately whose character was thought to be evil or
26:57malignant that softened a little bit into a woman who was a complete nag or a scold and basically not
27:04somebody you would want to be around with
27:06of course we know Shakespeare picked up on that with taming of the shrewd but this in turn led to
27:10the formation of the verb to shrewd and the adjective shrewd that we have today is the past participle of
27:16that to shrewd so to shrewd was to really nag and have a go at someone and shrewd originally again
27:21meant evil venomous and lost its sting a little bit and then passed into somebody who was actually very astute
27:28usually with nefarious intentions in mind but then somebody who was simply keen-witted and gifted like our contestants today
