00:17Thank you very much.
00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:34Things are ticking along very, very nicely indeed as we prepare today for the third quarterfinal of the series, 78
00:42finals.
00:43Fantastic.
00:44And talking of ticking along, Rachel, have you heard about this clock that they're setting up in the desert down
00:50in Texas?
00:51It's called the 10,000-year clock.
00:55I mean, talk about paint drying.
00:56Listen to this.
00:57It's designed to run for 10 millennia without any human intervention whatsoever, powered by changes in temperature, apparently.
01:04It'll tick once every year.
01:06Oh, wait for it.
01:07And with a century hand that moves once every 100 years.
01:11Surprise, surprise.
01:11And a cuckoo pops out and says, cuckoo, every 1,000 years.
01:17It's apparently going to be a visitor attraction.
01:20Well, here's one visitor who's not going to bother to try and pick in the desert in Texas.
01:24Can you imagine?
01:25Not really.
01:26Well, will it last for 10,000 years, I wonder?
01:28What do you think?
01:29Er, no.
01:30Are you going to make tracks there and have a look at it?
01:32Probably not.
01:33In time for the tick?
01:34I think the only people it would appeal to are some of our contestants who say the 30 seconds go
01:38too quickly.
01:40Is it once every year?
01:42Yeah.
01:42Yeah.
01:42There's some people in this studio, actually, over there.
01:44I'm trying to make them do the maths.
01:46I'm trying to get them to use their brains.
01:47And I think it might take 100 years for some of the maths problems for these guys.
01:51But for everyone else, I think we can stick to a regular clock.
01:53I think you're right.
01:54Absolutely right, Rachel.
01:56Who's here?
01:57Chris Thorne.
01:58Chris Thorne is back.

02:14Number six seed.
02:16And you missed out on being an octochamp, just missing a crucial conundrum.
02:20Well, that was tough, wasn't it?
02:21It was.
02:22I remember it very well.
02:23Anyway, you relaxed?
02:24Very relaxed, thank you.
02:25Ready to go?
02:25Looking forward to it.
02:26Well done.

09:37I'm Moony.
09:39Yes, I was Moony as well.
09:43And both of them absolutely fine.
09:45To be Moony is to be dreamy and unaware of your surroundings.
09:49Mooning around?
09:50Yep.
09:51Helen and Susie?
09:53I was Moony as well, but there is a six letter in there.
09:56Hominy, which I don't really know what it means.
09:58Oh, Hominy Grits?
09:59Hominy Grits, yes.
10:00Especially in southern states, you have Hominy Grits and Southern Fried Chicken.
10:04So what is Hominy?
10:05It's maize that's ground.
10:06And into Grits, as they call it, which is...
10:09Hominy Grits.

11:26Nodders.
11:27Yep, Serrano.
11:29We have Serrano ham, but it's a chilli pepper.
11:32And you can also be a person who nods, a nodder.
11:35Yep.
11:36Mmm.
11:37It's a nickname for something else, but I'm not going to tell you what it is.
11:4136th place 26th.
11:42Dougie on now, 36th.
11:44But in the corner, have you come up with anything?
11:47Oh, there is an eight hiding in there.
11:49Adorners.
11:50Adorners.
11:51Oh, well done.
11:51Susie, anything else?
11:52Yeah.
11:53Well done.
11:54Well done, Helen.
11:58So it's numbers for Dougie Mackay.
12:01Yes, Dougie?
12:02One from the top, please, Rachel, and then five from anywhere else.
12:06Absolutely.
12:06Thank you, Dougie.
12:07One large five, little.
12:08Good start for you.
12:09And this numbers round, we have nine, three, ten, five, one, and 100.
12:17And the target, 476.
12:19Four, seven, six.
12:23Yeah.
12:53Four, seven, six.
12:54And Chris.
12:55Four, seven, six.
12:55Off we go.
12:56Dougie.
12:57So I did nine minus one is eight.
12:59Yep.
13:00Multiplied by three.
13:01Twenty-four.
13:02And take that away from five hundredths.
13:04Five times a hundred.
13:05Yep.
13:05Perfect.
13:06And Chris.
13:06Same.
13:07Same wave.
13:08That's fine.
13:09All right.
13:12So still that ten point difference in Dougie's favour as we turn to Helen.
13:18Helen.
13:21Adventures.
13:22Arctic.
13:23Arctic Adventures.
13:24What's next?
13:25Well, if you'll excuse the pun, we're going to do the polar opposite.
13:30This was, when I went to the Arctic Circle, it was an adventure for Barnardo's, the children's
13:34charity, to raise awareness of the work they do and to show that everybody can go on one
13:39of these amazing adventures, get sponsored to do it and raise funds for, you know, a charity
13:44that means something to you.
13:45Yeah.
13:46So it's become a bit of an annual thing following the success of our Arctic adventure.
13:51And inspired by Rachel, it has to be said, we're going to Borneo this year.
13:55Oh, well done.
13:56Because last time I was here, we ended up having a chat behind the scenes about Borneo.
14:01Rachel was telling me how much she loved it and how beautiful the jungle was.
14:05So we're heading off to Kota Kinabalu and to do a jungle trek in the foothills.
14:11I think of Kinabalu Mountain, but I can't stay because I have a job in Grimsby I have to
14:16get back for.
14:17So I'm not doing the mountain climb, but I'm hoping that we'll get to see some of the orangutans
14:21in the wild.
14:22And hopefully what happened to my friend won't happen to me.
14:26She was chased by a very large male orangutan when she did a similar jungle trek.
14:31So hopefully it'll be fine because I can't run too fast.
14:34They've got very long arms.
14:35They've got long arms and they move pretty quickly.
14:38But we're doing all sorts of things.
14:39We're sleeping in a canopy under the stars, which all sounds very romantic, but I'm not
14:43quite sure whether it'll be that romantic, actually, when it happens, just with a mosquito
14:47net for protection.
14:49We're fishing using the local methods, trying out the local food.
14:53And I nearly didn't go because I've got to cut the trip short and I can't climb the mountain.
14:58But then I thought it's one of those bucket list things, isn't it?
15:01For sure it is.
15:02How many of you are there on this side?
15:04I think altogether there's probably about 12 of us.
15:07And, you know, we'll all fundraise as well, which will be great.
15:10And 272,000 families, children and young people were helped by Barnardo's last year.
15:18So doing something like this gives you an opportunity to talk about it and hopefully to inspire other
15:23people.
15:24You know, these these adventures are all out there and you can get sponsorship to go and
15:28do them.
15:29So raise loads.
15:31Well done.
15:37Excellent.
15:3946 to 36, 10 point difference.
15:41Chris, what's to be done?
15:43Letters game.
15:44Continent, please.
15:45Thank you, Chris.

16:47And Dougie?
16:48Yeah, just six as well.

16:53And scopes.
16:56Any advance on six?
16:57Helen?
16:57Susie?
16:58I had spices and copies, both six.
17:02Anything else?
17:03Pogies are there, type of fish, and gossip as well.
17:07All sixes.
17:07All sixes.
17:08Nothing beyond.
17:1052 to 42, ten points in it.
17:12Dougie, your letter's game.
17:14Consonant, please, Rachel.
17:14Thank you, Dougie.

18:30Happy enough? Now then.
18:32I think lots of sevens, actually,
18:34because we had Thimble, didn't we?
18:35And Blather, another seven?
18:38Blather.
18:38Lots of sevens. You couldn't get any more, could you?
18:42No. Thank you.

18:47It's time for you, Chris. Off you go.
18:50Can I have six more, please, but only give Dougie
18:51four of them. What's that?
18:53But only give Dougie four of them. Right, OK.
18:55Shall we say the first four?
18:58Six smalls. See if it works this time.
19:00Thank you, Chris. And they are
19:015, 1, 3,
19:056, 7,

24:15it might have been possible to be frank with you anyway it only goes to uh improve dougie score
24:2173 now to 55 but over in the corner what have you managed to dredge out of that little lot
24:26we've
24:26dredged i think a couple of sevens haven't we um quirked yeah that's an odd one i was looking for
24:35squirt that's not it um his lips quirked disbelievingly so it means to um move if you
24:41talk about your mouth or your eyebrow etc it moves or twists to express surprise or amusement
24:47quirky quirky yeah also with duskier there yeah thank you all right 73 to 55 and susie
24:56you're back what have you got for us today in your origins of words i have an email from danny
25:03lester who um asks why a um a prickly marine creature is called the sea urchin what is the
25:11urchin doing there and it's a really good question so i thought i'd tell the story of
25:15how a creature under the sea is connected both to a hedgehog and a dickensian street ragamuffin
25:20um but it all began like a lot of english words with 1066 and when the normans invaded england they
25:26brought with them their name for the hedgehog which was urchin uh with nature at the front and they
25:33got that from a popular latin word which was which meant the same thing and english has always struggled
25:39with the french tongue so to speak um and they couldn't quite get their uh their mouths or their
25:46lips around erichon and so they came up with all sorts of versions of this word um urchin urchin with
25:53an eye and finally they settled it urchin so that was their version of the word and this in turn
25:58explains
25:59the name of the marine creature so it's the the sea sibling of the land hedgehog if you like
26:04meanwhile though um popular superstition had it at the time that these creatures weren't always what
26:10they appeared and that in fact they were an elf or goblin in disguise um i guess the sort of
26:16the
26:16whole sort of prickly exterior did just seemed quite uncanny to them at the time you have to remember
26:21that superstitions like these were absolutely rife at the time so um an oath was also thought to be
26:26connected to an elf in fact it goes back ethnologically to the same viking word and an oath was thought
26:31to be
26:32a changeling child that had been left by the elves or goblins at night in place of the real one
26:38and
26:39so the elves had stolen away a real child left a half which this was um cruelly called at the

30:21I have taller.
30:22And taller?
30:25And what have we got in the corner, Helen?
30:27Oh, I think there were a plethora, if that's the right word, of sixes.
30:30Because we also had reveal and travel, among others, I think, didn't we?
30:34Well, quite a few sixes there, but couldn't get beyond.
30:3897 to 61.
30:40So here we are.
30:41Final numbers game.
30:42Dougie, off you go.
30:44Thank you, Nick.
30:44That's a four from the top, Rachel.
30:46Why not?
30:46Just for a bit of fun.
30:48Four large and two little, mixing it up today.
30:51And they are five.
30:53One.
30:53And then the big ones.
30:5450, 25, 175.
30:59And the target, 732.
31:01732.
31:33Well, Dougie.
31:34No, just 736.
31:36736.
31:37Chris?
31:38734.
31:41Let's hear from Chris, then, shall we?
31:43100 plus 50.
31:46And then, sorry, 75 over 25 is 3.
31:49And then 75 over 25 is 3.
31:51150 minus 3.
31:531, 4, 7.
31:54Times by 5.
31:55Times by 5, 7, 3, 5.
31:57And then a 1 left over.
31:59Yep.
31:59Well done.
32:002 away.
32:022 away.
32:03Now, Rachel, can you help us, 732?
32:06I can get you to 731 if you say 75 times 50 is 3,750, minus 100 is 3,650,
32:19divided by 5 is 730 and add 1.
32:23But that one's impossible, so 1 away was the best.
32:26Well done.
32:26That'll do.
32:27Thank you very much, Rachel.
32:31So, our number, 6 seed, just nudging 100 on 97 against Chris's 68.
32:37We get to the final round.
32:38That's conundrum time.
32:39Gentlemen, fingers on buzzers.
32:41Good luck to you both.
32:42Let's roll today's countdown conundrum.
32:45Good luck to you both.
33:17Well, we're foxed up here.

33:28Scrivener.
33:31Well done indeed, Scrivener.
33:33So, here we are then.
33:35Quarterfinal, and the seeds are tumbling.
33:38Well done, Dougie.
33:40Seed number six beats Chris Thorne's third seed.
33:44And, in fact, yesterday, this is happening all the time now.
33:46Toby, young Toby, was number two seed, was toppled by Philip, number seven seed.
33:52And that's whom you're meeting next Thursday in the second semifinal.
