00:32Well, good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:35I hope your hands are all right, those dog lovers amongst you, because apparently, Rachel,
00:41so many people carrying injuries to their hands when they take their dog for a walk
00:47because they wrap the leads around their hands improperly.
00:51And the medical profession has found it necessary to issue a health warning,
00:56health and safety warning, that you must actually take your dog for a walk with holding the lead loosely.
01:04What sort of dogs are these that are actually pulling so violently that they're snapping people's fingers?
01:10Apparently, one of the most injuries, wait for it, is a spiral fracture of the finger that requires a surgical
01:17operation.
01:19Oh, dear.
01:20It's amazing.
01:20But what about you?
01:21You're a sort of an animal lover.
01:24Yes.
01:25What's your biggest dog that you've ever had in the family?
01:27Well, I went to Crufts, not in the family, but in Crufts the year before last.
01:33And I was doing the programme with Claire Balding and Alan Carr, and I was about to enter,
01:38and they gave me a dog to enter with, and they gave the man, the strapping man next to me,
01:42some tiny little dog, and they gave me a golden retriever.
01:46And golden retrievers are a lot stronger than they look.
01:49Yes.
01:49So we were ready to go on, and it's live, so standing behind this kind of platform,
01:53you have to step through it and, you know, ready for the 10, 9, 8, this dog was having none
01:58of it.
01:58With a few seconds to spare, it marched on.
02:01I thought we were going to take the whole set out, and it crossed the whole set.
02:04I was just being dragged along with it.
02:06It took me right to the other side of the room, to its owner.
02:09How was your hand?
02:10Oh, my...
02:11I mean, my whole body, my arm was almost pulled out of its socket.
02:14So you've actually, you know, you've validated the medical profession.
02:18Yes.
02:18A big dog can pull you over.
02:21Definitely.
02:21Brilliant.
02:22All right.
02:22Who's with us, Rachel?
02:24Matt Sykes is back.
02:25Giant killer.
02:26Yeah, yeah.
02:27You did very well.
02:28You did very well.
02:29Two crucial conundrums, and you won.
02:32Yeah, thankfully.
02:33Well done.
02:34All right.

02:40Is that right?
02:41That's right, yes.
02:42Recently promoted.
02:43We were, yes, last season.
02:45We got promoted to step four of non-league football.
02:48Excellent.
02:49Well, you keep going.
02:50And you keep going here as well, Matt.
02:51Well done.
02:52But you first of all got to get over Andy Evans, a politics student at the University
02:56of Leeds from Newbury in Berkshire, who's actually very lucky.
03:00You met one of the great American presidents, one of the most decent American presidents of
03:05recent times.
03:06None other than the peanut farmer, Jimmy Carter.
03:09What a good bloke he is.
03:10Oh, yeah, definitely.
03:10When did you meet him, and where?
03:12Well, I was on a holiday with my family ten plus years ago now in Georgia, and he runs
03:16this Sunday school every Sunday, and he does pictures and stuff and meet people afterwards.
03:22So, yeah, we got a picture of him, and it was a really good day, yeah.
03:25Excellent.
03:25I don't know how much of it now, because I was seven, but...
03:28Nonetheless, it's something to treasure, really, because he was a very decent man.
03:31Yeah.
03:32Now, good luck to you both.
03:34Big round of applause for Matt and Andy.
03:41And Susie's over in the corner, joined once again by the legendary dancing judge and presenter,

07:07Off we go.
07:08Can I have one large and five small, please?
07:10You can indeed.
07:11Potentially keeping it simple.
07:12Let's see.
07:13Thank you, Matt.
07:13First one of the day is four.
07:17Five.
07:18Seven.
07:19Four.
07:20One.
07:20And the large one, 75.

07:57Matt?
07:58Just 3 for 3.
07:59Andy?
08:00I'll say 350.
08:03So, Andy?
08:0475 minus 4 minus 1.
08:0775 minus 4 minus 1, 70.
08:09Times 5.
08:10Times 5, one away, 350.
08:12Close, very close.
08:14Not quite there, though.
08:15For that, we turn to you, Rachel.
08:17You could have said 7 plus 5 is 12.
08:21Add that to 75 for 87.
08:23Times that by 4 for 348.
08:27And add on the 1349.
08:29Terrific.
08:34Wonderful.
08:35So, 21 plays 7.
08:36Matt on 7 as we turn to our first tea time teaser,
08:39which is Tamp Swoon.
08:43And the clue, only nine letters?
08:45Looks like she's in for an easy day.
08:47Only nine letters?
08:49Looks like she's in for an easy day.
09:07Welcome back.
09:09I left you with the clue.
09:10Only nine letters.
09:11Looks like she's in for an easy day.
09:13Who is?
09:14The Postwoman is.
09:16That's who.

10:15Bye.
10:18Andy?
10:18It's a five.
10:19And Matt?
10:20Only a four.
10:21So, Matt?
10:22Raw.
10:23Raw and?
10:24Ratio.
10:25And ratio.
10:26Yes.
10:27No.
10:28What about the corner?
10:29Come on.
10:30Well, it was really tricky, this one.
10:31So, we could just about get to a six with atrium.
10:35Yeah.
10:35And mortar as well for another six.
10:39All right.
10:3926 plays seven.
10:41Matt, it's your letters game.
10:43Consonant, please.
10:44Thank you, Matt.

11:39I love one more.
11:41I love one more.
11:41Here, I love you.
11:42I love you.
11:44Matt. A six.
11:46And... Six as well.
11:47Yes, Matt. Poised. Andy.
11:50Bodies. Those are sixes.
11:52Len and Susie. Well, you know,
11:54I watch strictly quite a lot,
11:57even though I'm not on it.
11:58And back in the day when I was dancing,
12:01the Paso Doble,
12:03you can get
12:04Paso, but if you
12:06dare said that to some of the old
12:08fuddy-duddy judges, well,
12:10they'd do something
12:12to you. So there is Paso
12:14there, but it's not much of a word, I know.
12:16But you've got a word that I've never heard of.
12:19Yes, it's a technical
12:20term and it's adipose
12:22and it describes tissue in the
12:24body that's used for storing fat.
12:27Adipose. Very good.
12:2832 to 13. Now,
12:30Andy, it's your numbers game.
12:32Can I try the bottom row, please? You can,
12:34indeed. Six little ones coming up. Do you like
12:36the numbers game? Hopefully.
12:38Good. We'll see if you do it in 30 seconds time.
12:40These six little ones are three.
12:42Eight, five,
12:44one. Another eight and six.
12:47And the target,
12:49969.
12:51969.
13:20969.
13:22Now then, Andy.
13:24960.
13:25Matt?
13:26I think 967, not written down.
13:29Heavy stuff.
13:30Matt.
13:31So I've got 8 times 8 equals 64.
13:34Yep.
13:35Times the 5 to get 320.
13:38Times by the 3.
13:40960.
13:41And then plus the 6 and plus the 1.
13:45You haven't used either of those.
13:46Yeah, well done.
13:47967.
13:48Oh, excellent.
13:49Excellent.
13:50Rachel, can you find the missing 2?
13:53Yes, a couple of ways.
13:55You could have said 6 plus 5 is 11.
13:588 plus 3 is another 11.
14:01Times them together for 121.
14:03Times that by 8 for 968.
14:07Another 1.
14:08965.
14:08That's wonderful.
14:14Amazing.
14:15So there we have it.
14:1632 plays 20.
14:17Close enough as we turn to Len.
14:20Len.
14:21Yeah.
14:21You've got a story about your dad.
14:23Yeah, because he was a great bloke, my dad.
14:26And, of course, I loved him very much.
14:28But when he passed away,
14:31we had the cremation and stuff.
14:35And my mum said to me,
14:38I want you to look after the ashes until we get his name on the stone.
14:45So I put them in the boot of my car for safety.
14:50It was a box.
14:53Well, it was in the time when there was a bit of trouble going on in London,
14:57and there was patrols of soldiers going about.
15:02Me and a mate had been to the theatre,
15:04and then we'd gone and had something to eat.
15:06So it was getting on.
15:07We were going over Westminster Bridge,
15:10and there was a row of soldiers.
15:13So we pulled over.
15:15Where have you been?
15:16We've been there.
15:17We've been there.
15:18We've been there.
15:18We've been there.
15:18We've been there.
15:20So he said,
15:21what have you got in the boot?
15:23So I said,
15:25well, nothing really.
15:26He said,
15:27open the boot.
15:28So I opened the boot,
15:29and there, of course,
15:31was this box with my dad's ashes in it.
15:35What's that?
15:36I said,
15:36it's my dad's ashes.
15:39We're waiting,
15:40you know,
15:41for the right time.
15:43He said,
15:44open it.
15:44Oh.
15:46I said,
15:46I'm not going to open it.
15:48I said,
15:48I don't know what's in the box.
15:49They could blow all over Westminster Bridge.
15:52I'm not open.
15:52Open that box.
15:55I said,
15:55I'm not going to open the box.
15:57Look,
15:58it's got it written on it.
15:59Last remains.
16:01Anyway,
16:01just then,
16:02fortunately,
16:03because it could have been a catastrophic thing,
16:07along came a brigadier or whatever.
16:11What's going on here,
16:12soldier?
16:13He said,
16:13we've seen this box in the boot of this guy's car.
16:17He won't open it.
16:18I said,
16:19look,
16:19please understand.
16:21It's not anything other than what it says.
16:25The last remains of Len Goodman.
16:28Lenon,
16:28you know,
16:28which is the same name as me.
16:31Anyway,
16:32fortunately,
16:32after a bit of umming and ahhing and this,
16:35he said,
16:36OK,
16:36well,
16:37go on,
16:37let them go.
16:38So we got away.
16:39However,
16:39what a terrible moment it was,
16:42and it could have been.
16:43And my mum,
16:44well,
16:45I'd have been buried with my dad,
16:46because she would have gone berserk if something had happened.
16:50But anyway,
16:51it didn't happen.
16:51It all ended up as it should do,
16:54and everything was great.
16:56But worrying,
16:58worrying moment for me.
16:59I should say so.
17:00Poor little Lenny.
17:01We're still going to applaud your resistance to these soldiers who are going to spit open that box.
17:06Well,
17:06I'm like that,
17:07you know,
17:07I'm oblivious to pain,
17:08SAS trained,
17:09as you might know.
17:12Let's have a big round.
17:17Well done,
17:18Len.

24:23Now then, Andy.
24:24Out, hit.
24:25You can.
24:26Out, hit.
24:28Yeah, for six you can.
24:30To surpass someone in hitting or simply hit a higher score than someone else.
24:33Very, very good.
24:34Thank you for that.
24:35Len, Susie?
24:36I've got talc.
24:38I never get, I can never understand talcum powder.
24:41Why?
24:42I don't know.
24:43I'll tell you a story about my dad.
24:45You talked about your dad.
24:46My dad was a very good horseman, as it happens, back in the, before the war.
24:51And he said, the thing is, you've got to wear very, very tight riding boots.
24:56Okay?
24:56So what he used to do, he roast me for telling you this, he said, I used to wear women's

26:52up whilst you regalus with your origin of words well the question from Greg is a who
26:59asks who the violet is or was in the expression a shrinking violet and why was
27:05she shrinking and it's a good question because you might well think that violet
27:10in this expression is a person and like a bit like Alice in Wonderland suddenly
27:14sort of found herself being telescopes down to the size of a mouse but in fact
27:19it's one of those phrases that seems to involve a name but doesn't and as I
27:24say you'd be forgiven for thinking this because there are so many expressions
27:26with names in them but this as I say isn't one of them sometimes people in
27:31these expressions are real and I will come back to sweet Fanny Adams and Hobson's
27:35choice but there was no violet in this case at all and you might guess it's
27:39actually got to do with the flower the violet and not a woman now did Viola
27:45family of flowers which includes violets and pansies doesn't seem necessarily
27:50like an obvious choice for someone who's kind of shrinking or shy or
27:54different in some way particularly when you think about those sort of vibrant
27:58colors they're quite extrovert flowers but in fact the phrase shrinking violet was
28:02coined and before breeding turned the plants into these kind of incredibly
28:07blousy wonderful colors because the native English violet is a really
28:12understated flower and we know that Keats and Shelley and Wordsworth loved
28:17wandering through the woodlands and musing on the sort of beautiful flora and
28:21fauna that they found and this is exactly what happened with the violet and because
28:26a friend of three those three poets called Lee Hunt was walking through the
28:32woodlands one day and decided to draw attention to the modest wood violet and he
28:37wrote there was the buttercup struggling from a white to a dirty yellow and a
28:40faint-colored poppy and here and there by the thorny underwood a shrinking violet and
28:46so it was he who gave us that expression today so it originated as the lyrical name of a
28:51flower but then soon slipped into English in a figurative way to describe
28:55somebody who's really modest and introverted like Len
28:58cool
