From rocks and coconuts to picking his own toys! Producer Valentina shares the story of how this dog was rescued in Bocas del Toro โ€“ and how he became the first transport to the U.S., opening the door for many more dogs to find their way from the streets of Panama to the USA.

00:00This dog is about to choose his own toys for the very first time after a life where
00:05all he had to play with was a coconut.
00:13His name is Chooch and he was found in really bad shape on an island in Panama.
00:18So right now I'm walking to see this dog that I got a call about today.
00:23I figured hi honey, oh baby boy, he's been out for at least three weeks.
00:33He was severely underweight, just covered in tics and had signs of past injuries.
00:42So Lex heard about him and decided that she just could not leave him there.
00:47We're gonna get you help, okay?
00:51But slowly he started to recover and his personality started to come out.
00:59Turns out he not only likes coconuts but rocks too.
01:04Lex started thinking about what she could do and for Chooch that meant trying to get him off the
01:09island and point him home in the U.S.
01:14With the help of rescuer Marcela, they were able to get Chooch to the U.S.
01:20So he's gonna get all the toys.
01:22And once they did, that's what clicked.
01:25If they could do it for Chooch, they could do it for other dogs too.
01:31What really stood out to me is that this didn't just end with Chooch.
01:36It turned into something they kept coming back to again and again until it became something much
01:42bigger than just one rescue.
01:47Now Chooch has a home of his own with the most amazing family that Lex found for him.
01:58And, I mean, he's kind of the reason why all of this even started.
02:02Chooch, that's a giant rock, honey.
02:04You can't take that with you.
02:04Chooch.
