Are the Red Sox just "one piece away" from potentially being favored to win the A.L. East? #MLB  Should Red Sox look to add, knowing there isn't any one team running away with the A.L.?

00:00I'm still heartbroken about that Red Sox game.

00:03That game was so ours to win.

00:05And it's not just the fact that you blame it on Mother Nature,

00:09although I'm telling you, that was really sad.

00:11That was a strange ninth inning.

00:13Red Sox score, they lose the game.

00:15But the thing with the Red Sox, they need to do

00:17is they have got to stop leaving men stranded.

00:20I could not believe it.

00:21I mean, there were many chances that they could have had

00:23to blow that game open against the Minnesota Twins team

00:27that's not very good.

00:28And then Hicks, I'm telling you,

00:31I consider him to be a bust in that trade for Rafael Devers.

00:34He's 1-7.

00:35He has an ERA of over 6.

00:37Yeah, he can't find the plate to save his life.

00:41No, he can't.

00:43It's a frustrating thing because they keep dragging you back in,

00:49and then you have to consider being out again.

00:52It's like, again, you win that Dodgers series.

00:55And then I don't know, I'm sure you guys talked about it yesterday,

00:58but those that are diminishing that win in the Dodgers series

01:03because the Dodgers are a little cold lately drives me nuts.

01:08I mean, it's like that was a series that was a must-win series,

01:13and you went and you won it.

01:14Right.

01:14So, but they're just – Curtis brought up earlier – I can't remember if it was on the air

01:20or when we were talking before the show this morning.

01:23We talk a lot of ball.

01:25Usually the first thing we talk about, Curtis.

01:27But they've lost more one-run games this season than ever before in Red Sox history.

01:34I mean, I don't know about the whole history, but last year they had 13 in 162 games.

01:39This year they have 21 in 108.

01:42Eight more one-run losses already.

01:45And, you know, I understand what you're saying, Greg.

01:47You know, it's not – you beat a team in the Dodgers that are incredibly talented,

01:51two out of three, but you're now four and six after the break.

01:55And you were 10-0 before it.

01:57Yeah.

01:57And, you know, now you've got to win the next two in Minnesota

02:00to not give up the momentum you got from L.A.

02:03But to me, the big story wasn't on the field.

02:05It's Lou Maloney and others that are connected trying to minimize expectations,

02:10saying you weren't going to reallocate the resources you gained from trading Devers in season.

02:15I think the reaction to that trade would have been far different if the fans knew that

02:18because that wasn't made clear.

02:20I mean, I love Lou.

02:21You know that.

02:21I think he's the best baseball guy in Boston.

02:23I didn't see him tweeting in the immediate aftermath of the Devers trade

02:27that it would be foolish to expect the team to reinvest the money on this year's team.

02:33So if that was the case, where was that reporting, you know, a month ago?

02:37My whole expectation with the Devers thing is – and I kind of agree with Curtis –

02:42is like my expectations, you might not reallocate every single penny,

02:47but there should be a big portion of that money that should be reallocated into this team this year come trade deadline.

02:55Like that's kind of the expectations I have.

02:58That's kind of what they've been telling us, especially if they're in a position where they feel like,

03:02oh, we do have a legitimate chance.

03:05We are a good baseball team.

03:07Sam Kennedy told us, come trade deadline.

03:09If we're in the mix, then, you know, we're going to make big moves.

03:14Craig Breslos told us the same thing.

03:16The trade deadline is what, Thursday?

03:18Yes.

03:18You are not only in the mix, you are in a position right now, if you add a piece,

03:24you potentially could win the division.

03:26But you – what you've wanted, and you're right about wanting it,

03:30is you want them to add a legit number two starter.

03:33And what Lou is saying is that there's not – you may not be able to pry that guy loose somewhere.

03:40Well, that's different, though.

03:41We talked about that.

03:42If there's a legit number two that, whether it's Joe Ryan or –

03:48They're not getting rid of Joe Ryan.

03:49Okay, so –

03:50That was Lou's point.

03:51What if they traded for Nolan Ryan?

03:54All right, so Joe Ryan is what most people consider a legit number two.

04:00Is Nathan Evaldi considered a legit number two, or is he just another debt piece?

04:06Because if there's no legit number two, then how do you fault the Red Sox for trying to get somebody

04:13but no one's willing to give those guys up?

04:15If you had Evaldi, you would be, I believe, a favorite to win the division.

04:18Okay, so then you would consider him a legit number two.

04:21Oh, of course.

04:22So then he should be a guy that if the Rangers are willing to move –

04:28or if he moves, you should be in on him.

04:31And you should –

04:31Weren't there reports last season that they were trying to get Evaldi back, too?

04:35Like, this has been something that's been talked about in the past.

04:37So, I mean, and I – if I remember correctly, I believe that Evaldi had interest in coming back to Boston.

04:44So, in my mind, that's a no-brainer.

04:46If they're willing to give him up, that should be somebody that the Red Sox should bring back,

04:50not only for talent, but also, like – and I hate that we have to do this because we are Boston

04:55and we should be better than it, but for nostalgia.

04:57Like, people love Nathan Evaldi when he's here.

04:59But unless they are looking at this team and watching it yo-yo and they're not really willing to invest.

05:06But are they yo-yoing because the pitching isn't great every single night

05:09or are they yo-yoing because the bats aren't going?

05:11Like, I think the pitching is the issue a lot of the time, and that's the reason for the yo-yo.

05:15So, if you can get a legit number two in Nathan Evaldi, then the yo-yo could balance out.

05:19It's tough to pitch after a rough flight, though.

05:21I mean, are we really giving them that excuse?

05:23Have you ever been on a flight that dealt with a lot of turbulence?

05:27Oh, yeah.

06:39Maybe we have a little bit more confidence in Baio and Giolito, but even then, it's still not a ton.

06:50I just don't – all these texters are saying there's no way you're going to – you can't get Evaldi because Texas is in it.

08:05from the number one wild card spot.
