00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:33Now, today sees the start of a very important exhibition at the NEC, Birmingham's NEC.
00:38It's the British Tourism and Travel Show.
00:40More than 250 exhibitors, Rachel, all there trying to get hold of our money to ensure that we stay in
00:49Britain for our holidays.
00:52Staycations are here to stay.
00:54Scotland tugs me towards her, but my word, it's a beauty if the weather's good.
00:59Yes, that's the problem with the UK, isn't it? It's just the weather.
01:02Yeah. Do you have a particular nook or cranny of England that you like to stay in?
01:07Well, we've had people to come and stay with us in London, and when you treat London as a holiday
01:11destination like you would in New York,
01:12it's got absolutely everything. It's got, you know, restaurants, shows, history, museums.
01:18It's got ping-pong bars. It's got all sorts of stuff. It's great fun.
01:21But then if you want to get away, the Lake District.
01:24The lakes are beautiful.
01:25It's beautiful, isn't it?
01:25But you're right about London. I mean, it's a great town.
01:29And to cycle around. It's lovely. And I live in West London, and my friends live in East London.
01:33So they know all the cool, trendy places to go east, and it's nice to just go out there for
01:37a night and feel like a tourist.
01:38Yeah, well, you be careful.
01:41I worry about you.
01:43Now, Rachel, Mohsin Shabir is back.
01:46It's come all the way from Saudi Arabia to play International Countdown.
01:49Brilliant stuff.
01:50And you had a good win against Maria Frizzell yesterday.
01:55And here you are. Fantastic. Good score, too.
01:5889, first time out.
01:59Feeling comfortable?
02:01Yeah, much better today.
02:02Brilliant. All right.
02:04You're joined today by Nicola Sibic, an English teacher from Wimborne in Dorset.
02:08Now, she's a music lover. Live music's your thing.
02:12It is, indeed, yeah.
02:13You like going to the festivals?
02:15I do, yeah. I've been to Download Festival about eight or nine times.
02:18Mm-hmm.
02:19Lost.
02:19So who... Why is Download Special? It's a fair old way from Dorset.
02:25Yeah, it is.
02:26Up near Donington.
02:26Yeah, I've always loved it. Since I was about 18, I've been going.
02:30And my favourite band is Slipknot, so they're kind of a heavy metal band.
02:34And I just love the whole performance.
02:35As soon as you arrive, whatever the weather, which is usually really grim,
02:39it is just a great experience.
02:41It just feels like home, really, when you arrive in the field.
02:44Brilliant. Well, good luck to you today.
02:45Thanks so much.
02:46Good luck to you both.
02:47Big round of applause for Mosin and Nicola.
02:51There you go.
02:52She's in the corner.

14:15934, that's the way.
14:17So, 24 to 19 as before.
14:20Nicola in the lead,
14:21and we turn to Len Goodman.
14:24Len, you want to share some good advice?
14:27When I first did Strictly Come Dancing,
14:30I'd never been on television or anything,
14:33so, obviously, I was nervous,
14:35and I was going to meet one of my heroes growing up,
14:39Bruce Forsythe.
14:40And when I heard he was going to host it,
14:43oh, you know, and they say never meet your heroes,
14:46well, there was a knock on my door
14:48just a couple of hours before the show.
14:51It was Bruce.
14:53And he said,
14:54I just wanted to come in and say hello.
14:57You know, this is the first show,
14:59so he must have been nervous himself.
15:01And he said,
15:03how do you feel?
15:04And I said, yeah, I'm OK.
15:05I'm a little bit worried about coming over wooden.
15:09And he said a great thing,
15:11which I've always remembered.
15:12He said,
15:13be yourself and be honest.
15:15And that's what all the time I was on Strictly I tried to do,
15:19and ever since then,
15:21be yourself and be honest.
15:22So that was one lovely little thing that I've remembered.
15:26Driving along on the M6 motorway,
15:29and I was going to overtake a camper van thing
15:35with an old couple in it,
15:37and on the side it had
15:41adventure before dementia.
15:46And I've lived by that ever since.
15:48So come on.
15:50Yeah.
15:50That's excellent.
15:51What good advice that was.
15:53But talking about Bruce,
15:55I met him a couple of times,
15:56very briefly.
15:57What a nice, kind, generous man he was.
16:00He was the most lovely man.
16:01You know,
16:02when you think he was,
16:03well, an absolute institution,
16:05a national treasure and whatever.
16:07Great guy.
16:08Thanks very much.
16:14That's the enderance for sure.
16:16So 24 to 19,

17:40certainly can, yes. How are you spelling Arbor? I don't know if it's a word. A-R-B-O-R.
17:46With the British spelling, you need a U in there. So I could have had six. Yeah, you could have
17:50had six. I'm sorry.
17:51Bad luck. What else have we got? No, that's it. Six is our best shot. Barony and Byron. Thank you

24:45Mmm.
24:46Mosen?
24:46A seven.
24:48And Nicola?
24:49Just a six.
24:50And that six?
24:51Parrot.
24:52Parrot and?
24:53Airport.
24:54And airport.
24:55Very good.
24:56Pretty good.
24:57Pretty good.
24:58Len?
24:59Susie?
24:59Actually, Susie's written this down.
25:01What is this word?
25:02Epilator.
25:03Or epilator.
25:05It's a device that removes unwanted body hair.
25:08You wouldn't know about this, probably.
25:10Pass the epilator.
25:11Yeah.
25:12Fifty-five days, thirty.
25:13Mosen on fifty-five.
25:15Oh, Susie.
25:17It's your origin of words.
25:19Thank heavens for that.
25:21Well, I'm a great fan, as you know, of the Oxford Dictionary's blog.
25:25It's just a free site, and you can just go on and find lots of wonderful facts and stories about
25:30words.
25:31And I came across a little article written by John Kelly, who writes for them,
25:35and it's really about what the lawn is doing in forlorn.
25:39And forlorn itself is quite a sad word, really, and I'll tell you why.
25:44First thing to say is that it's very, very old.
25:46So it's recorded in something called the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, which has given us quite a lot of early records
25:51of words.
25:52And that goes back to the ninth century.
25:54So we have had forlorn for a very, very long time, and it's the past participle of a forgotten verb
26:01called forlaser.
26:02Forlaser, and that meant to lose utterly, to lose completely in quite a devastating way.
26:08And forlaser actually is the ancestor of lose and loosen and lease, a lot of other words that have survived
26:13in modern English.
26:15I'll come back to the lawn later, but the for bit was actually quite common at that time.
26:21And there were so many wonderful words, beginning with for, that we have now forgotten.
26:26They usually mean something destructive or something lost.
26:30So forslug, if you forslug the day, you neglect it through complete sluggishness and idleness, which I quite like.
26:38Forthrawn, to be frozen up, almost frozen solid in the ice.
26:42Forbliss, to make happy.
26:44And so it goes on.
26:46Forglut is another good one.
26:47That's to just devour something through gluttony.
26:51Forlaser just disappeared.
26:53But forloren, as it was, or forlorn, survived.
26:57And, of course, it survives most of all in forlorn hope.
27:00And we actually owe that, believe it or not, to the Dutch forloren hoop, which meant a lost troop,
27:06because it referred to a detachment of fighters who led an attack, went ahead.
27:10They were the vanguard, if you like, and would meet with their demise.
27:14So the forlorn means the same as it does in English, but the hoop was actually a troop originally.
27:19But the lawn is beautiful, and we've kind of lost that as well.
27:24Lawn, lost.
27:26Love lawn was a word used by Milton, which I think is quite beautiful.
27:29But it's a shame that we're lawn, of lawn, I think.
27:32And John Kelly has suggested some beautiful ones to bring back.
27:35A star-lawn sky, so a sky without stars.
27:38A peace-lawn world, which is beautiful.
27:40A fact-lawn culture, which is quite relevant today.
27:44So, yeah, beautiful, beautiful words that we have lost.
27:46I think we need to make a big effort to bring back both force-slugging, force-wunk, and love lawn.
27:51I think it's beautiful.
27:54Very good.
27:58Well, you've made a good start there.
27:59Thank you, Susan.
28:00I hope so.
