00:00And the U.S. and Chinese presidents met this Thursday at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing
00:04during Donald Trump's first visit to the country in nine years.
00:08Xi Jinping proposed overcoming the two-city destrap while warning that Trump, that Taiwan, could lead the two countries into
00:14conflict.
00:15Our correspondent in Beijing, Mauro Ramos, has more in the following work.
00:20We are leaving the very room where Chinese President Xi Jinping has just received U.S. President Donald Trump
00:26here at the Great People's Hall in Beijing.
00:28We were able to catch the opening minutes of this bilateral meeting, the first of several encounters
00:34the two heads of state will hold over these two days here in the Chinese capital.
00:39Trump is the very first U.S. President to visit China in nine years.
00:43The last one to do so was Trump himself back in 2017.
00:47In the days leading up to the visit, Washington imposed sanctions on Chinese refineries for buying Iranian oil.
00:54In an unprecedented move, China responded by activating an anti-sanctions law, ordering its companies
01:01not to comply with the U.S. measures.
01:04During the opening remarks, the tone was starkly different.
01:08We are going to have a fantastic future together.
01:12Such respect for China.
01:14The job you have done.
01:15You are a great leader.
01:16I say it to everybody.
01:17You are a great leader.
01:19Sometimes people don't like me saying it, but I say it anyway because it is true.
01:23I only say the truth.
01:24Xi Jinping is known for citing authors in his speeches to foreign leaders.
01:28This time, he chose a concept from a U.S. political scientist, the Thucydides trap.
01:33The idea holds that the rising power will necessarily threaten an established one.
01:39Xi raised the question with Trump.
01:41Is it possible to escape that paradigm?
01:45The question is, can China and the United States transcend the so-called Thucydides trap
01:50and pioneer a new paradigm of relations between major powers?
01:53Can we join hands to address global challenges and inject greater stability into the world?
01:59Can we advance the well-being of the peoples of our two countries and the future destiny of humanity?
02:06Jointly building a better future for bilateral relations?
02:10These are questions of history, questions of the world, and questions of the people.
02:18In the bilateral meeting, he warned Trump that if the Taiwan question is not happening,
02:23if it is handled carefully, the two countries could face clashes and even conflicts,
02:28putting the entire relationship at risk.
02:31Li Bo, president of the Tun Teo Institute, believes that making China's position on Taiwan clear
02:38is one of the main goals of this visit.
02:40For China's part, very important is to tell, to educate the American team, Taiwan is China's core interest.
02:53And also to ask them to really reduce the delivery of the weapon system to Taiwan will give really tough,
03:07show tough stance.
03:09This is the main task, I would say.
