During a press briefing on Monday, President Trump was asked about a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Transcript
00:00Is it possible you meet him this year or maybe next year?
00:03Well, I'm meeting a lot of people.
00:05I mean, it's hard to say that, but I'd like to meet him this year.
00:09President Xi would like me to come to China.
00:12It's a very important relationship.
00:15As you know, we're taking a lot of money in from China
00:18because of the tariffs and different things.
00:21It's a very important relationship.
00:23We're going to get along good with China.
00:25I hear so many stories about we're not going to allow their students.
00:28We're going to allow their students to come in.
00:30We're going to allow it.
00:31It's very important.
00:31600,000 students.
00:33It's very important.
00:34But we're going to get along with China.
00:36But it's a different relationship that we have now with China.
00:39It's a much better relationship economically than it was before.
00:43With Biden, boy, what he allowed that, I mean, they just took him to the cleaners.
00:47You know the expression?
00:48They took him to the cleaners.
00:50I'm sure they have an equal expression in South Korea,
00:52but they took that guy out for a ride like nobody's ever been ridden before.
00:57Terrible.
00:58But we have a very strong relationship, Howard, I would say, economically with China now,
01:04getting much better.
01:06They have to give us magnets.
01:07If they don't give us magnets, then we have to charge them 200 percent tariff or something.
01:12You know, but we're not going to have a problem, I don't think, with that.
01:16We've, I think that's perhaps behind us.
01:19You know, China intelligently went and they sort of took a monopoly of the world's magnets.
01:23And nobody needed magnets until they convinced everybody 20 years ago, let's all do magnets.
01:29There were many other ways that the world could have gone.
01:31But so far, it'll take us probably a year to have them.
01:34And we're heavy into the world of magnets now, only from a national security standpoint.
01:39But we have a powerful thing.
01:43It's airplane parts.
01:44They have many Boeing jets.
01:45You know, they had 200 jets that didn't fly.
01:48And I've sent them all, based on his word, I sent them all of the parts so their planes
01:55can fly.
01:56I could have held them back.
01:57I didn't do that because of the relationship I have.
02:00And their planes are now flying.
02:02You know, we had, 200 of their planes were unable to fly because we were not giving them
02:08Boeing parts, purposely, because they weren't giving us magnets.
02:12Therefore, we weren't giving them.
02:13But we have a much more powerful thing that's tariffs.
02:16If we wanted to put 100 percent, 200 percent tariffs on, we wouldn't do any business with
02:21China.
02:22And, you know, it would be okay, too, if we had to.
02:24But the magnet situation, we have tremendous power over them and they have some power over
02:30us with magnets.
02:30We're going to have a lot of magnets in a pretty short period of time.
02:35In fact, we have so many, we won't know what to do with them.
02:37But you know the story.
02:39It's a very interesting history with magnets.
02:41And it really is because presidents, not being business people, they allowed that to happen.
02:47And they shouldn't have.
02:49But we have much more.
02:51I mean, look, in terms of playing the cards, we have much bigger and better cards than they
02:55do.
02:56But with that being said, I think we have a great relationship.
02:59I spoke to President Xi fairly recently.
03:02And at some point, probably during this year or shortly thereafter, we'll go to China.
03:06And I think we're going to see a magnificent sight.
03:09It's a great country.
