00:00The Higher Education Ministry has stressed that the new entry pathway for students from
00:05Chinese independent secondary schools to public higher learning institutions
00:09does not amount to recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate syllabus.
00:14Higher Education Director General Azlinda Azman said the admission of UEC holders
00:20remains subject to conditions and standards set by universities.
00:24Azlinda said every university has its own evaluation mechanisms for applications from UEC holders
00:32including academic benchmarks and program requirements ensuring that standards are
00:37upheld without requiring official recognition of the UEC syllabus.
00:42Yesterday the ministry said the government had agreed on several matters concerning entry pathways
00:48for students outside the national education system to pursue studies at public higher learning institutions.
00:55Today Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reiterated that all students, regardless of their academic background,
01:02must fulfill the basic requirements and pass their Bahasa Melayu and History SPM examinations.
01:09Azlinda also rejected the United Chinese School Committee's Association of Malaysia's claim
01:15that the initiative was half-hearted, saying university senates could not compromise on academic standards and quality requirements.
