00:00PAS appears to have given up hope on Gerakan wooing non-Malays for Perikatan Nacional, says an analyst.
00:07University Science Malaysia's Azmil Tayyip said Gerakan, a founding component of PN,
00:13had failed to gain non-Malay support, including from Indians, who are more open to switching allegiance than the Chinese.
00:20He said PAS would have noticed Indian voters shifting from Pakatan Harapan to PN in several by-elections,
00:25while Gerakan is growing irrelevant because it cannot compete with DAP, MCA, and MIC for non-Malay voters.
00:34The PAS non-Muslim wing held its first convention last weekend after becoming an associate wing in September last year,
00:40with its head, Jeebala Chandran, saying PAS must use it to dispel fears among non-Malayas and build national unity
00:46and interracial understanding.
00:49Meanwhile, Shaza Shukri of International Islamic University Malaysia said,
00:53Gerakan and the PAS non-Muslim wing had different roles,
00:56with the wing acting more as an intermediary between PAS's clerical leadership and the non-Muslim community.
01:03She added that PN may face difficult seat negotiations in future elections because PAS,
01:08Prasatu, Gerakan, and the Malaysian Indian People's Party may all compete to contest mixed or non-Malay majority seats.
