00:03Meet Muhammad Ilham Shah Mahiyudin, an origami artist whose creations go beyond the usual paper
00:09cranes and frogs that most of us are familiar with. Shah is giving origami a distinctly Malaysian
00:16touch through creations inspired by local culture. From Katupat and Keres to Hang Tua, Hang Jabat,
00:24Hang Lekir, Hang Lekiu, and Hang Kasturi, he uses this art form to celebrate Malaysia's rich heritage.
00:32So this is an origami hang tuah made by 60 by 60 cm square tissue paper. Two pieces of tissue
00:43paper you combine in one piece of paper and it takes about 8 to 12 hours to fold.
00:52Shah believes origami can be an engaging way to introduce children to these legendary characters.
00:59His works also include different types of wao found throughout Malaysia, including wao puyuk,
01:06wao helang, and wao barat. Shah, an associate artist with the Malaysia Origami Academy, also
01:12crafted an origami version of Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship logo.
01:16So this is an origami ASEAN logo, commissioned by Japan Embassy in Malaysia. There is a 14 piece of paper.
01:32It takes about 20 minutes to fold.
01:44So we have all sorts of different categories, fauna, flora, we have our traditional costumes, we have our architecture, we
01:53have our key figures, we have our food.
