00:01Five-time snooker world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan is on the ultimate road trip with his buddy Matt Smith
00:07So do I get an ink now? You're the rocket, obviously. If we're gonna hustle a little bit, I was
00:12thinking you could be the peacemaker
00:17He's visiting four very different cities on a journey of discovery
00:22The first time I've been refused to play on a snooker table
00:25Is it? Is it?
00:27Oh, of course
00:29Oh, sorry, man
00:32Welcome to Alcatraz
00:35How do you feel?
00:42What a buzz
00:43What a buzz
00:44He's going to learn about America's great history
00:47And there is a Paul and Billiard's connection
00:50Really?
00:51Is there?
00:51Yeah
00:51Mark Twain
00:52Who's he?
00:53Mark Twain
00:54Who's he?
00:55Blonde
00:56Who's Mark Twain?
00:57Did you just play snooker through your youth? Is that all you did, really?
01:00Yeah
01:00And it's links with the great game of Paul
01:03So now he's holding the cue
01:04Oh, wow
01:07What are you going for? The six?
01:09Oh, wrong
01:10Jesus
01:11Wow
01:12That is mental
01:13Did you try and lean on a table?
01:14Yeah
01:16That's scary
01:18He'll take on the best at their own game
01:21I'm one of the greatest athletes that's ever been born
01:24And even have a crack at the public
01:26And what do you make of Ronnie?
01:29Stick to snooker
01:30Stick to snooker
01:32Just as long as nobody finds out who he is
01:35Roddy
01:36What did you say his name was?
01:38Johnny O'Sullivan
01:40Ronnie O'Sullivan?
01:41No, I've never heard of him
01:44This time, it's Memphis, Tennessee
01:50Birthplace of the blues
01:51You've got a natural musical sound now
01:54If you have to smell it
01:55It's a blues
01:57Where Ronnie and Matt will explore the lives of kings
02:01I can't believe I'm standing there with his ass
02:03And the setting for a showdown
02:05With the man they call the Scorpion
02:07One of the game's all-time greats
02:12You and Bear Trouble
02:18So, if you're planning to cruise the same streets as Elvis Presley
02:22There's really only one car for the job
02:25Look at this, mate
02:26Didn't I say I'd sort you out?
02:28Hey?
02:29What about this?
02:30Such a beautiful mother
02:32Love the steering wheel
02:33We've got a Cadillac
02:34We've got ourselves a caddy
02:36You've got the hair
02:37We've got the car
02:39I just can't sing, mate
02:40Eh?
02:40I just can't sing
02:41Really?
02:42Oh, pay for
02:46Wow, you've got the doors
02:48Seats are hot
02:49Eh?
02:50What's it like inside?
02:52Yeah, it's nice
02:52Oh, mate
02:53This is going to be beautiful to try
02:55It did like a big steering wheel
02:56Oh, yeah, yeah
02:57We're in Clover, mate
02:58The 55 Cadillac Fleetwood
03:00Is a piece of American motoring history
03:02Cars don't get more rock and roll than this
03:06Oh, listen to that
03:07Sounds good
03:08How's it sound?
03:09Beautiful
03:10Oh
03:13That sounds great
03:14A bit of a grumbling V8
03:16I like the smell of that petrol
03:17Yeah, yeah
03:18Send me away, man
03:19Put it in gear first
03:21There you go
03:25Oh, yeah
03:34What's it like to be Elvis, mate?
03:35He had one of these
03:36It's not an easy car to drive
03:38Is it not?
03:42What's your favourite Elvis song?
03:44You got one?
03:45Uh-huh
03:47That one
03:48That one?
03:49No, probably
03:51Blue Sweat Shoes
03:52You'd like that one?
03:53Yeah?
03:53Yeah, a bit of Blue Sweat Shoes
03:55Whoa
03:59I'm turning, but look
04:01Nothing's happening
04:01Yeah, yeah
04:03It's like driving a boat
04:08The right car for Memphis, isn't it?
04:10You know?
04:10Yeah, absolutely
04:11Yeah
04:1155 Fleetwood
04:12An Elvis car in an Elvis town
04:16The driver might not be as smooth as the car
04:19But once he's got to grips with the Caddy
04:21It's time for the first stop
04:22A must-see shrine on the Memphis train
04:27Now look, mate
04:28This is the place
04:28This is history right here
04:31Sun Studio
04:32Set up way back in 1950
04:35In lots of ways
04:36The birthplace of rock and roll
04:38The legendary Sun Studio
04:40Founded by Sam Phillips
04:42Is one of the most iconic locations in Memphis
04:44This place launched the careers of Jerry Lee Lewis
04:48Roy Orbison
04:49And, of course, Elvis Aaron Presley
04:51Shall we go and pay $4 and see if we can get a tune?
04:55Well, that's the legend
04:56That's what they did, which was so revolutionary
04:58They said to anybody
04:59You come in here with $4
05:01You can record two songs
05:02And literally walk in off the street
05:03And that's what Elvis, among many others, did
05:06Imagine Elvis just strolling up here now
05:08With his $4
05:09Yeah
05:09And his big hair
05:10And his big barnet
05:11Yeah
05:12I want to sing a song
05:13His guitar
05:14That's it, mate
05:15No more truck driving for Elvis
05:17The rest is history, man
05:19Uh-huh
05:20It released Elvis Presley's first recording
05:24In 1954
05:27There we go
05:28It's pretty cool, isn't it?
05:29It's on the studio
05:30Thank you
05:33Rolling on
05:34Ronnie and Matt are off to see a home
05:36Fit for a king
05:39Graceland is where Elvis laid down his guitar
05:41And slipped off his blue suede shoes
05:43After a long day in the studio
05:46Have you got your blue suede shoes?
05:47I've got my blue Birkenstocks on, mate
05:49Oh, that'll do
05:50You might have a pair in here
05:53He bought the house in 1957
05:55With the proceeds of his first gold record
05:57Heartbreak Hotel
06:01Oh, this is it
06:03This is Graceland
06:04It's lovely, isn't it?
06:06Yeah
06:06It's big
06:06It's a thing you've lived here, eh?
06:08Amazing
06:09This is Memphis' answer to you
06:13The king definitely liked to do things his way
06:16And this 23-room house is no exception
06:20Shall we have a little look round?
06:22Yeah
06:22And there is the music room
06:24You can imagine him banging out
06:27Jamming away
06:27Yeah
06:28It's just beautiful, isn't it?
06:29Gospel of course
06:29The colour, the mirrors
06:32He didn't mind a mirror, did he?
06:33Yeah, he'd love a mirror if he looked like Elvis, though, wouldn't he?
06:36That's true
06:37That's true
06:37He was a handsome dude
06:38He was
06:39He was a looker
06:40He's got some stories to tell in this place
06:42You can't help but imagine what it must have been like to have been here
06:45I mean, he must have had some parties
06:46Oh, okay
06:47There's been some good times in here
06:49Yeah
06:49Some fantastic times
06:51Yeah
06:51I mean, I'm sure there's been one or two moments at Chateau O'Sullivan
06:54But maybe
06:55Maybe
06:56Maybe he's topped it off
06:57I'm guessing
06:59Who's that there?
07:00Must be his granddad
07:01Vernon
07:02Is that Vernon, yeah?
07:03Vernon Presley
07:05Someone told me he's got a pool table on it
07:06That's what I heard
07:08Worth a little peek
07:09Shall we have a little look?
07:11Oh
07:14That's weird, isn't it?
07:16Yeah, I like it
07:16There's like a thousand of you
07:19Not sure that does for me
07:25Oh, this looks good
07:26God
07:27How about this for a room, eh?
07:29Nice, isn't it?
07:30Have you got one of these?
07:31I've got a snooker room, but it's not like this
07:33Really?
07:34Damage to the table means it's strictly off-limits
07:37Even for a five-time world champ like Ronnie
07:40But don't take it personally
07:42Even Barack Obama was told to keep clear of this famous bays during a recent tour
07:47This is plush
07:48Extraordinary kind of
07:51Style
07:52If you were going to have a room, you'd have it like this
07:54Because it's a space you want to just spend time in and relax
07:57Mm
07:57Shoot a bit of pool
07:59Clink of glass and knock out the next million-dollar million-selling hit
08:04Eh?
08:05I know
08:07I can't believe I'm standing in Elvis' house
08:09Mm
08:09At his pool table
08:10Eh?
08:11This was from literally the late 50s when he moved in
08:14Been well played in, though
08:15Nice little tear on the cloth there
08:17Yeah
08:17Another little hole there
08:19Yeah
08:19Where he was trying to break too hard, probably
08:23I wonder if it was him that tore the table
08:25Probably
08:26Never seen that happen on a table before
08:28Haven't you?
08:29Never
08:30What, where someone's...
08:31It's kind of really hard to rip the cloth, you know
08:32Really?
08:33Yeah
08:34That's just wear and tear
08:36And I think eventually it's just
08:37It's like an old pair of trousers, you know
08:39Where the seam just goes
08:40Mm
08:40It's the first time I've been refused to play on a snooker table
08:43Is it?
08:44Yeah
08:45Is it?
08:45Oh, of course
08:46Even the Essex king gets knocked back occasionally
08:48Yeah
08:50I believe he was quite a fan
08:52Yeah
08:52You'd like to play there, you know, wouldn't you?
08:55On Elvis' table
08:55I wouldn't mind giving him a game
08:56Mm
08:57Mm
08:58It'd be fun
08:58Would you lag for a break or would he be Biggie Squiff?
09:03Eh?
09:04I thought I'd have lagged him
09:05Couldn't compete with the quiff
09:06I know
09:06Your hair's getting bigger just because we're here
09:10I love this house, beautiful
09:12Yeah?
09:12Yeah
09:13So give me a few tips for the Essex mansion?
09:15Yeah, I ain't got a mansion, mate
09:17I live in a terrace house now
09:19It's all gone wrong
09:23Elvis lived in the house until his death here in 1977
09:27Almost four decades later
09:28His popularity and legacy shows no sign of diminishing
09:34You just feel like you're that bit closer to him
09:36You just get a sense of what he was, you know, and how big he was
09:40He's had a good life
09:42Yeah
09:42You'd have a good 42 years and a mediocre 80, wouldn't you?
09:46Imagine if you got the call
09:47I wonder, would you come down and just, you know, give Elvis a few tips
09:50Maybe a couple of hours down there?
09:51He wouldn't mind that, would you?
09:52No, of course not
09:53What would you charge for that kind of thing?
09:55Just a night, just a bit of breakfast in the morning
09:58Hey
09:59A bit of breakfast in the morning
10:00Yeah
10:01Brought up by the man himself
10:02Yeah
10:02It's only one Elvis
10:04Yeah
10:06Still to come, Ronnie and Matt move from hip shaking to hustling
10:10This guy's got good
10:12He could be hustling nice
10:14And they explore a pivotal moment in modern American history
10:18If you are black, you are able to sit in this section
10:21But if a white person gets on, you will be forced to give up your seat
10:25Rosa Parks was asked to give up her seat and she said no
10:31Heading across town, this is Ronnie's chance to see if he's got the chops to hustle in Memphis
10:36And where better to get his hustle on than poor players' paradise, high pockets
10:42But first, tactics
10:44So what's the plan?
10:45I'm a nip in
10:46Have a couple of games, just see
10:47Yeah
10:47Yeah
10:48Yeah
10:49See if we can go undercover
10:50I've got a little bit of folding
10:52Yeah?
10:52Oh yeah
10:53Still a mummy's son or something
10:58You want to see me get better?
11:01You're my son?
11:02Yeah
11:03Come on, it's good
11:07I don't want to be your dad
11:09I'm not happy with that
11:10Right, yeah, I'll be bothered then
11:14Under the pretense of some documentary filming
11:16The guys are hoping to slip in and set up a hustle without anyone recognising Ronnie
11:23That guy's good
11:25That's spotted already, mate
11:26Or at least, that was the plan
11:29You all right?
11:30How you doing?
11:31You all right?
11:31You all right?
11:31Cool
11:32Oh, bloody hell
11:33Oh, you've got no chance here, mate
11:35I know
11:36With Ronnie recognised instantly, it's plan B
11:39As Dad tries to rustle up a hustle
11:43How'd you like to play Ronnie?
11:44Sure
11:44Yeah?
11:45Absolutely
11:46Are you happy to play?
11:47I'm Danny
11:47Yes, sir
11:47I'm Matt
11:48Pleasure to meet you, sir
11:49Luckily, some action isn't hard to come by here
11:51Even for a world champ
11:53Okay, bud
11:54Yeah?
11:55Tom, mate
11:55Got you one
11:56Eight ball, yeah?
11:56Yeah, eight ball
11:57Gets the fella called Danny
11:58First to five, 50 bucks
12:00Yeah, yeah
12:00All right, good luck, sir
12:01Yeah, good luck
12:01Great
12:01Okay, boys
12:02Good luck, brother
12:03Good luck, mate
12:04And you
12:13With his cover blown, it's a straight shootout for 50 bucks
12:17And a whole heap of British pride
12:21So you think in the pool halls it's going to be difficult to go undercover?
12:25Absolutely
12:25Yeah, you're going to have some trouble with that
12:28I already knew who he was as a world-class champion
12:30We were hoping we might come in
12:32Under the radar
12:34Yeah
12:35I wish you luck at that
12:36I do
12:38Ronnie's flying
12:40Game one to the rocket
12:42Looks like you've got your A game tonight, son
12:45Danny's up
12:46Time to show what he's got
12:47Let's rock
13:02He can play
13:03Yeah
13:07This guy's quite good
13:09Danny might be up against a world champ
13:11But so far
13:12He's looking pretty unfazed
13:30Looking nervous
13:32Perhaps Ronnie shouldn't be underestimating the local talent quite so readily
13:37He could be hustling us
13:38He could be
13:40Drawing us in, mate
13:40Yeah
13:44Is Danny the best player, is it?
13:46Well, it's hard to say in it, man
13:53He's made this mistake
13:56Feathers ruffled
13:57Ronnie knows he needs to clear the table
13:59If he's going to walk away from this with victory
14:13Finally, Ronnie's found his groove
14:20Nearly there for Ronnie
14:22If he can clear up without any slip-ups
14:25It's job done
14:36Nice out, man
14:38Thank you for the offer
14:39I do appreciate it
14:40I can't take your money, anyway
14:42Well, we're playing for 50 bucks
14:43No, no, I wouldn't take your money
14:44I'd never take your money
14:44I'd never take your money
14:45Oh, that's wild
14:46I'm just here to see if I can hustle
14:48So that makes it like a bit of a...
14:49Oh, I think you're going to be all right
14:50You shouldn't have any trouble finding action, though
14:52It just depends on...
14:53Yeah, yeah, yeah
14:54It's who you come across
14:55Yeah
14:57And then, what about Johnny Archer?
14:58Any tips for Ronnie?
15:00Don't miss
15:01Just...
15:01Don't miss
15:02Don't miss a shot
15:03Yeah, I've played him before, yeah
15:05Thanks, man
15:05Thank you, sir
15:06Appreciate it
15:07I do, I appreciate it
15:07Thanks a lot, man
15:08Good shooting, man
15:09Yeah, I appreciate it
15:10No, it's good
15:10Thank you, sir
15:11I appreciate it
15:11See you, man
15:12Ronnie, I sold it
15:13Come on
15:13If you play snooker
15:14This game's going to be on lock
15:16Before it even starts
15:16Aw
15:18Give him his money back for you
15:20Oh, God
15:20I can't keep the money, can I?
15:22Oh
15:23I can't keep the money
15:24Should we get the money?
15:26That's what we're here for
15:28Yeah, I know, but...
15:29No, I'm only kidding
15:31Get your stick, Brad
15:33Get your pool stick
15:36I don't know
15:37I thought I really did have a chance for a minute
15:38And I dogged that eight ball
15:39That kind of...
15:40That just...
15:40That's the nail in the coffin
15:42I was doing what I love
15:43I was hanging out playing pool
15:44With a great player
15:45I mean, you know
15:46I don't think it gets any better than that
15:47Either way
15:50Yeah, I think it worked pretty well, really
15:51We, uh...
15:53We went in there
15:53Got recognised immediately
15:55Now, we walked in the door, didn't we?
15:56And I got a
15:57Hey, Ronnie
15:57I thought...
15:58I think I'd get more recognised out here
16:00Than I'd do actually in the UK
16:02Really?
16:02That's blown that game plan completely
16:04Well, a little bit, yeah
16:05I mean, in Memphis, of all places
16:06I thought we'd be under the radar, but...
16:08There is no radar
16:09No
16:13A successful hustle under their belt
16:15But no money in their pockets
16:16Ronnie and Matt are back on the road
16:18And tracking down the most famous street in Memphis
16:22I see a massive guitar, so...
16:24Ah, we are at Beale Street
16:25Look at this
16:25We're on it
16:26We're going down Beale Street
16:27You've got a natural musical sound now
16:29We have to smell it
16:31Really?
16:32It's the blues
16:33Officially declared home of the blues by an act of congress
16:36Beale Street is the crowning jewel of Memphis
16:40Look at BB Kings, we're here, mate
16:43Where the blues was invented
16:49BB Kings, that's your guy
16:51Yeah, yeah
16:52He was always prolific with his concerts
16:54What was his busiest year?
16:55How many days?
16:56650
16:57There's only 365 days in a year, boss
16:59Sometimes you can do two shows in one day
17:00No, he only did one a day
17:01Oh, right, OK
17:02One a day
17:02I bet him 364
17:05What, he did every day in a year?
17:06Yeah
17:07Blimey
17:07Would you play snooker every day?
17:09Yeah
17:10Would you?
17:11Absolutely
17:11Couldn't think of anything better
17:12Christmas Day
17:13Is my favourite day playing snooker
17:15OK, well, you've killed me, factness, don't you?
17:17Sorry
17:17342
17:18I went far away
17:19No, well, no
17:20I was hoping you'd have gone a bit lower
17:21And I could have impressed you
17:22So what was he doing for the other 23 days?
17:26You weren't working hard enough for me
17:28Oh, dear
17:30Crossing town, Ronnie and Matt are en route
17:32To one of Memphis' most historic and revered sites
17:37The National Civil Rights Museum
17:39Traces the history of the Civil Rights Movement in the USA
17:42It's housed in the former Lorraine Motel
17:44Where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968
17:50Good afternoon
17:51Welcome to Memphis
17:52Welcome to the National Civil Rights Museum
17:54One of the most significant milestones in the movement's history
17:57Took place on this bus
17:59Thanks to one woman's bravery
18:01So we're entering a bus
18:03Montgomery, Alabama in 1955
18:06Of course, this section up here is strictly for whites only
18:11If you were African American and wasn't very crowded on the bus
18:14You were able to sit in this section here
18:16This section was known as no man's land
18:19What's no man's land?
18:20No man's land means that if you were black
18:22You were able to sit in this section
18:24But if a white person gets on
18:26You will be forced to give up your seat
18:28And move to the far back of the bus
18:30So because of this unjust rule
18:33On Thursday, December 1st, 1955
18:3542-year-old Rosa Parks
18:37Sat in this very seat that you two are sitting in right now
18:40And a white man got on the bus
18:42And she was asked to give up her seat
18:45And she said no
18:46Her subsequent arrest
18:48Led to a boycott of the buses by African Americans
18:51Who made up the majority of the city's commuters
18:54Then it gets really interesting
18:56They decided that they had to elect a leader
18:59They decided to elect someone who was relatively unknown
19:05In the civil rights movement at that time
19:07And they elected 26-year-old Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
19:13Finally, 381 days after Ms. Parks was arrested
19:16On a bus just like this one
19:18And the United States Supreme Court again rules in favor
19:21Saying that segregation on these buses was on Constitution
19:25So from that day onwards
19:27There was no whites at the front
19:30African Americans at the back
19:31Anyone could sit anywhere on the bus
19:33The buses were completely integrated
19:35And blacks were able to sit where they wanted
19:37When they wanted
19:37Everyone equal
19:38Everyone was equal
19:39And so the Montgomery bus boycott
19:42Is the first major accomplishment and achievement
19:45Of the modern civil rights movement
19:46And it's the first victory
19:48For Martin Luther King Jr.
19:50As a civil rights leader
19:51After success in Montgomery
19:53Dr. King's activism continued to help
19:56The civil rights movement gain momentum
19:59On August 28, 1963
20:04250,000 Americans gather at the Lincoln Memorial
20:07In the Washington National Mall
20:09For the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom
20:12This was the site of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s
20:16Most famous speech today
20:17The I Have a Dream speech
20:20Dr. King at this point was a very popular icon
20:23But this makes him into the international phenomenon
20:27That we recognize and identify today
20:29The march helped to push the civil rights acts
20:32Through Congress, ending segregation
20:34Dr. King's next challenge was to ensure
20:37All African Americans had the right to vote freely
20:41He led protest marches across Alabama
20:44Despite facing extreme violence
20:47And because of these marches
20:50Lyndon Johnson signs into law
20:52The Voting Rights Act of 1965
20:55So that was it
20:56Every African American could vote
20:59In 1965
21:00Correct
21:01Although many rights had been won
21:03Inequality still existed
21:05And in 1968
21:07Unfair working practices
21:08Leading to the death of sanitation workers
21:11Brought Martin Luther King Jr.
21:13Back to Memphis
21:15This is room 306
21:17Of the original Lorraine Motel
21:19The bed that is unmade was Dr. King's bed
21:22That night they were going to go to a local minister's home
21:26To eat dinner
21:27And he steps outside of the balcony
21:29He's speaking to people in the courtyard
21:31Including a young Jesse Jackson
21:34And at 6.01pm
21:36And Dr. King is fatally hit
21:38In the lower part of his face
21:41Dr. King was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital
21:44And he's pronounced dead at 7.05pm
21:48Blacks and whites together
21:49Could not understand
21:51Who would want to take the life of a man
21:53Who fought for freedom and justice and equality
21:56Not just for African Americans
21:58But for whites
21:59But for women
22:00For all races and ethnicities
22:06Hard to find the words, isn't it?
22:08Yeah
22:16Thank you very much, man
22:17My pleasure
22:18Thank you very much
22:18My pleasure
22:19Thank you very much
22:20My pleasure
22:20We've done a lot of things, haven't we, on this trip
22:22But I think that's the most important
22:25Massively, massively the most important
22:26They knew that they would have to take the struggle
22:29And so as generations to come
22:31Would not have to suffer what they had to suffer
22:34You can have nothing but admiration
22:36For human beings like that
22:41Still to come
22:42A trip down the river
22:43Would you like me to read you a bit of poetry, Ron?
22:46It's not really
22:46It's feeling quite romantic
22:48And it's another step closer
22:50To the rocket showdown with the scorpion
22:53Still stinging from their last meeting
22:55Ronny knows he's got something to prove
22:58Last time I played you ate
22:59Which one, what happened?
23:00You didn't do so well
23:04Clocking up the miles
23:04The caddy rolls on
23:06As Ronny and Matt head across town
23:08To meet the master of the queues
23:09Just wish it was a bit warmer
23:11You know
23:11Bit chilly, isn't it?
23:13It was the hottest place I've ever been in my life
23:16All right
23:17Hey, guys
23:18They like the car, don't they?
23:20Yeah
23:23Mucci queues have been supplying the tools of the trade
23:26Since owner Bob Mucci set up in the mid-70s
23:29These days, their top-of-the-line custom-made queues
23:32Sell for up to $100,000
23:35Oh, look at this
23:36Yeah
23:37Amazing
23:38That's where it all happens
23:39It's a big place, isn't it?
23:41Over here is the finished product
23:43Of course, there's a lot of steps in between
23:45Yeah
23:46But this is one of our more popular queues
23:49To say that is beautiful
23:51That's lovely
23:52Yeah, very popular
23:53What is that?
23:54This is a shell
23:55An ocean shell
23:56It's called power shell
23:58And dare I ask for a queue like these
24:00That one's $900
24:02Wow
24:02Yeah
24:03It's a lot of work goes into this
24:05Oh, yeah
24:05You bet
24:07Used by some of the world's greats
24:09Each queue takes 300 individual steps
24:12On 55 machines to build
24:14So this is where the first start of the queue is
24:17Up here, yeah?
24:17Right
24:18Over here, we have the shafts
24:20This is the business end of any pool queue
24:23Yeah
24:23Nook or queue or anything else
24:25We have to start with a square
24:27Yeah
24:27We turn it to a solid round one inch diameter
24:31Okay
24:31Okay
24:32Now over here
24:35Over here is where we're turning the under wraps from square to round
24:38The under wrap meaning this area right here
24:41So now there you are
24:42What you got
24:42Look at that
24:43It's got a lovely feel, wood
24:44Woody feel
24:46After bonding over a love of wood
24:48It's time for Ronnie to get his hands dirty
24:51Right, so this bit goes in here
24:52He might know how to handle a queue
24:55But can he make one?
24:57And then I'll just pull this along
25:00He sits to work on the wedge
25:02Which will form part of the detailing of the queue butt
25:05Turn the machine off now
25:08Always turn it off
25:09Get into that blade
25:10It'll chew you up
25:11And this is called a wedge
25:12Pull it out
25:13Wedge is normally what he gets when he wins
25:15That's right
25:16Plenty of wedge
25:18You're done
25:18He's got it
25:21All right
25:22After we've made the queues
25:23Of course we want to test them
25:26And this machine over here
25:28I built many years ago
25:29We call it the myth destroyer
25:31The myth destroyer
25:33Right
25:33So this looks pretty serious
25:35We tested deflection
25:36Deflection meaning
25:37You hit the ball on the right side
25:39The cue ball is going to take off
25:41On a path to the left
25:42The less degree it takes off
25:44The better the cue is
25:46In England we call it a throw
25:48Or you call it a deflection
25:50And I'm going to cock this
25:51All right
25:52You ready?
25:58And hit that second spot out
26:01Right there
26:02That's right
26:02About two inches
26:03Because that's about as good
26:05As you're ever going to see
26:05And the best we've ever done
26:07Is with an 11 and a quarter millimeter shaft
26:10And that hits right there
26:11So the thicker the tip
26:13The more it deflects
26:14Yes
26:14Yeah I only found that out
26:16A few years ago
26:16I've been playing snooker
26:1730 years
26:18I only found that out
26:19About two or three years ago
26:20Yeah
26:20Oh yeah
26:21So if we loaded this up
26:23With your average cue
26:25Over the bar
26:25You'd be right over there
26:26It'd be hitting over there
26:27So what would you do
26:28With a cue
26:29Would it hit the pocket?
26:30Well you'd throw it in the garbage
26:34So the cue has passed
26:35The myth destroyer test
26:36Now it's over to Ronnie
26:38To take it for a spin
26:40Right Ronnie
26:41Let's see
26:42What you make of it
26:49That's lovely
26:50I like that
26:51You're up and running now
26:54Yes
26:55Look at that
26:56Oh yeah
26:56See I play with a lot of side
26:58If you can take the element
26:59Of the throw off of it
27:00And you're probably used to
27:02A little more
27:03What you call throw
27:04Than that
27:05Yeah absolutely
27:06Yeah
27:07So much work involved
27:10300 stages
27:11We didn't have a chance
27:12To go through
27:13Looking at the 300 stages
27:14We'd have been here
27:15For six months
27:15We would
27:16You'd have had a proper Elvis clip
27:17By then
27:18You know you get the idea
27:19Of what it takes
27:20To kind of
27:20Get the finished article
27:23Nice
27:24Goes where you say
27:27Look at that
27:27Yeah
27:31He's obsessed isn't he
27:32Oh he's totally obsessed
27:33But all cue makers are
27:34Anyone that plays around
27:35With a bit of wood
27:36They are
27:36Kind of that
27:37They have to be that way inclined
27:39Oh look at that
27:40Right on point
27:40A bit like you
27:42Yeah
27:49Queued up with a newfound appreciation
27:51Of an old friend
27:52The guys are on the road
27:54And heading back into town
27:56How's your music
27:57Knowledge and ability
27:58Have you ever been
28:00A musician on
28:01Anything
28:02It's the only instrument
28:03I use
28:04It's a stupid cue
28:06You get a tune out of that
28:08It's an instrument
28:08I guess it is
28:10It just doesn't
28:11Make a noise
28:11It's the way it does
28:12When you hit the balls
28:13That's music to your ears
28:15Absolutely
28:16You've never been tempted
28:17Yeah but
28:18I tried a bit of it
28:19But it's just
28:20Not for me
28:21No?
28:22Nah
28:22Too much
28:23Like learning a new language
28:25I just thought
28:25I ain't got the time for this
28:29Next stop
28:29Is a subject
28:30Very close to Ronnie's heart
28:32And
28:33His stomach
28:37Memphis is world famous
28:39For its rib barbecue
28:40So Ronnie and Matt
28:41Set out to put the local delicacy
28:43To the taste test
28:44With Jeff
28:45At the double J
28:49I'm Jeff
28:50Welcome to Memphis
28:51Why don't we start out
28:52In the smokehouse
28:53Let me show you
28:54How we make that barbecue
28:55So good
28:56Each year
28:57Over 84 tonnes of meat
28:59Is eaten
28:59At the world champion
29:00Barbecue cooking contest
29:02Held here in Memphis
29:03This is where it all starts
29:05Wow
29:06Yes sir
29:07Wow
29:08Okay so you've got to get gloved up
29:09Shall we get gloves as well
29:10Yes sir
29:11Absolutely
29:14Though that figure
29:16Would be significantly lower
29:17If everyone gloved up
29:19At the speed of these three
29:22I don't know if I've got
29:22The right number of fingers here
29:24Just checking
29:28That's it
29:29Done
29:29Guys it all starts
29:30With a dry rub
29:31Which is a specially blended recipe
29:35So would that be
29:36A bit of a trade secret
29:37What's in there
29:37It is definitely a trade secret
29:39Is it
29:39Yeah
29:39Okay
29:40You can tell me later
29:41I'll tell you later
29:42So quite liberal
29:43With the rub
29:44Yeah
29:45Shall I give it a little scrub
29:46Yeah
29:48Nice and soft isn't it
29:49Oh yeah
29:50That is the loin back
29:51That comes off the top
29:52Of the hog
29:53Okay
29:53Our next step
29:54Is to take it
29:55Right over here
29:56To the smoker
29:57Oh
29:57Looks like that
29:58We cook everything
30:00On pecan wood
30:01So we call it pecan
30:02Pecan
30:02Pecan
30:03We can do that too
30:05Pecan wood
30:05Why is that
30:07You know
30:08It just gives us
30:09A unique flavor
30:10Okay
30:10And they'll smoke
30:11For about four and a half hours
30:13I'm surprised
30:14There's not
30:14More to it
30:16Maybe we ought to
30:16Save there's more to it
30:17But people won't try
30:18Absolutely
30:19All this work's making me
30:21Rather peckish
30:22You know what
30:22I'm not sure
30:23What peckish means
30:24But I hope it means hungry
30:25It does
30:26So let's go inside
30:27Let's go
30:29Here you go
30:30We got a full rack of ribs
30:31With some slaw and beans
30:32Wonderful
30:32Look at that
30:33Wow
30:34Thank you very much
30:35You're welcome
30:36I hope y'all enjoy it all
30:37I've got a feeling we will
30:38Good
30:39What's this
30:39We got baked beans as well
30:41Baked beans and slaw
30:42Coleslaw
30:43I mean to say it falls off the bone
30:46Is almost an understatement
30:47Jeff
30:47Wow
30:48Wow look at that
30:49So and you just get yourself involved
30:51With a little slaw and beans
30:52Slaw and beans
30:53Delicious
30:54I knew they'd be good
30:56Maybe not that good
30:57Can't get enough
30:58Anybody come into Memphis
30:59You want to tell them to come to Double J
31:00I bet you
31:05Brits have got their way of doing it
31:06Which is just fire and burning the food
31:08But these guys down here
31:09Know exactly what they're doing
31:11This is where the BBQ is
31:22With a belly full of BBQ
31:24Ronnie and Matt are ready for the road again
31:26If not the climate
31:28I don't think I've ever been hotter than this
31:31This in Thailand is probably the hottest I've ever been to
31:34Yeah
31:34Yeah
31:35Dubai
31:37It was hot
31:38But this is seriously hot
31:40This is probably the hottest
31:42Yeah
31:42Yeah
31:43No wonder it's a slow pace of life
31:45It has to be
31:46Doesn't it?
31:47Saturate energy
31:48You burn up
31:49Next up
31:50The guys are off to see what connects Paul
31:52With the magnificent Mississippi
31:56An iconic emblem of life on the river
31:58These steamboats have been traversing the Mississippi
32:01Since 1811
32:03Here we are mate
32:04On a paddle boat
32:05In the middle of the Mississippi
32:08Nice beautiful isn't it
32:0945 degrees
32:11Nice breeze
32:12Doesn't it face
32:13Fantastic
32:15Snaking its way around the edge of Memphis
32:17The mighty Mississippi River
32:19Is over 2,320 miles long
32:22And passes through 10 states
32:24One drop of water
32:26If you were a drop of water
32:27That started at the source
32:29Up near the Canadian border
32:30How long would it take you
32:32How long would it take you
32:33To get to the gulf
32:3410 minutes
32:3790 days
32:3890 days
32:39Yeah
32:39Wow
32:40It's a big river mate
32:41Some statistics you've got in that book there Matt
32:44It's all in here mate
32:45And as always
32:46Matt has a killer fact at the ready
32:48And there is
32:50A pool and billiards connection
32:52Via maybe America's greatest writer
32:56Mark Twain
32:57Who's he?
32:58Mark
32:58Who's he?
32:59Ron
33:00Who's Mark Twain?
33:01Did you just play snooker through your youth?
33:03Is that all you did really?
33:04Yeah
33:05The adventures of Tom Sawyer
33:07The adventures of Huckleberry Finn
33:08Two of America's greatest stories
33:10Set on this river
33:11Set on the Mississippi River
33:13Originally called Samuel Clements
33:15The author worked as a steamboat pilot
33:17Before putting pen to paper
33:19When he changed his name
33:21He chose a term commonly used on the river
33:23To signify the water was safe to navigate
33:25Mark Twain
33:27But he was an avid billiards stroke pool player
33:31Was he?
33:31Yeah, yeah
33:32In fact he wrote in my guide
33:34I have made a note
33:34He wrote a poem
33:35About the game of billiards
33:37Would you like me to read you a bit of poetry Ron?
33:39Yes
33:39Let's have a little bit of poetry
33:40Okay mate
33:41I'm feeling quite romantic this
33:45It's called Cushion First
33:46Which I know is
33:47Cushion First
33:48Nice title
33:49Something
33:49Beautiful title
33:50You believe in
33:52And it goes
33:53When all your days are dark with doubt
33:55Plenty of them
33:57And drying hope is at its worst
33:59I've had loads of them
34:01When all life's balls are scattered wide
34:03Oh yeah
34:04With not a shot in sight
34:06To left or right
34:09Don't give it up
34:10Advance your cue
34:12Shut your eyes
34:13And take the cushion first
34:15Oh beautiful lights
34:17It's not bad is it?
34:19That's lovely
34:19It's not bad
34:20Alas the romance of the moment can't last
34:23Ronnie's rematch with Johnny Archer
34:25Is looming large
34:27Since we got to the US
34:28I've got the sense that
34:30You've been kind of waiting
34:31With a little bit of trepidation
34:33To play
34:34Johnny Archer
34:35I think Johnny's going to be tough
34:37As he's on his game
34:38And I've just got to try and bring my game
34:40To his game
34:41And try and unsettle him really
34:42And I hope I get two or three wrecks
34:45And hopefully before he knows it
34:46The game's over
34:48Ready?
34:49Yeah I think so
34:50He may think he's ready
34:54But the last time they play
34:55Ronnie lost 8-3
34:57To avoid a similar beating this time
34:59He'll need nerves of steel
35:04Ronnie O'Sullivan is about to face
35:06His toughest pool challenge yet
35:08A rematch against an old foe
35:10Johnny Archer
35:11The last time these two met
35:13Was in 2006
35:15When Ronnie dipped his toe
35:16Into the waters of American pool
35:18And got thrashed 8-3
35:20I played Johnny before
35:22And he gave me a good beating
35:24He plays good 8-4
35:26He plays good everything really
35:27It's his game
35:29Voted player of the decade
35:31The Scorpion
35:32Is a four-time world champion
35:34He is one of the most successful players
35:38The game has ever seen
35:42Now you must be the famous Johnny Archer
35:44Yes sir
35:44Nice to meet you
35:45And I think you too know each other
35:46We do know
35:47How you doing mate?
35:48I'm doing fine
35:48How about you?
35:49Yeah I'm doing good
35:49What are we going to do today?
35:518-ball
35:52Fine with me?
35:53Last time I played you 8-ball
35:54Do you remember what happened?
35:55You didn't do so well
35:56No I didn't do so well
35:57What do you want to play boys?
35:59You want to go race to 5?
36:01We'll get it going
36:01Race to 5
36:02Maybe a little 50 dollars on it
36:04Something just to spice it up a ton
36:06That's okay
36:06Is that alright?
36:07Make it 100?
36:08100 is good with me
36:09Let's do it
36:09Make it worth you while
36:10Thank you sir
36:11Well played
36:12Thanks for accepting our wager
36:13Get your cues out boys
36:14And let's play
36:16Johnny is a true gent of the game
36:18But once the balls are on the table
36:20He's all business
36:23And with Ronnie still feeling the sting
36:25From their last meeting
36:26Both these world champs
36:28Will be ready to clash
36:33Johnny's up
36:34And it's a chance to see
36:35Why the scorpion is so deadly
36:38That's a powerful break
36:49Obviously if he gets off to a fast start here
36:52Could be early curtains
36:58And before Ronnie can even get on the table
37:00It's all over
37:01And he's one down
37:02So far
37:04Not so good
37:07A dry break from Ronnie
37:09Hands Johnny another chance
37:10To work his magic on the table
37:32A surprising mistake from Archer
37:35And Ronnie has a chance
37:36Opportunity knocks
37:44Are there any of the old time
37:45Kind of pool hustlers left
37:47Or has that gone now really
37:49The real good pool hustlers
37:51Are not the same
37:52No
37:52Like the old
37:54Irving Crane
37:55Or Fats
37:57Or anybody like that
37:58Hustling is more of a business now
38:00And we used to all
38:01Just kind of got up
38:02Played
38:02And go to dinner
38:04Go to a movie
38:04If you broke somebody
38:06You just gave them money
38:07And you've seen them the next week
38:16The rocket's flying
38:20This is his chance
38:21To make it 2-1
38:22And get his nose in front
38:24For the first time
38:27Okay you're winning
38:28For now
38:41That's the thing about Apo
38:42If you decide to try to run out
38:43And don't do it
38:44You're in bad trouble
38:51Back in the game
38:52And chasing the lead
38:53This is where the scorpion's
38:56Killer instinct
38:56Kicks in
38:57And don't do it
39:29Johnny makes it 4-2.
39:35He only needs one more frame for victory.
40:14But when the Scorpion misses a tough bank shot, the rocket is thrown a lifeline.
40:20If Johnny gets back to the table, he's only got two balls to pop.
40:24The pressure's on Ronnie. He can't miss.
41:08Thank you, Johnny.
41:10Appreciate it. Play well.
41:11Thanks, Mike. Appreciate it.
41:12Pleasure.
41:12Our education, watching you play.
41:15Ronnie fell sorry for me.
41:18I'm sure if I went over there, it'd be a little different.
41:20His break got better.
41:21Yeah.
41:22I know that. You've been working on it.
41:23His break definitely got better.
41:24Yeah.
41:25Yeah.
41:26You could definitely compete in this game.
41:28Yeah, just come on out.
41:29Yeah.
41:29Maybe next time.
41:31Always the next time.
41:33Always a pleasure playing Ronnie.
41:34I know your game's got to be good, and he's going to make it a little fun, but he'd better
41:39stick to Snooker.
41:40Yeah.
41:40I'll be looking forward to the next time.
41:43Thanks, brother.
41:44Nice to see you.
41:44All right, man.
41:46We're not doing great, are we?
41:48No.
41:49It's a tough trip.
41:50I wouldn't want to be locked in a room with him for a week, but I would own nothing,
41:53I think.
41:54It's that good.
41:57On that note.
42:00Let's go.
42:01Let's go and make some money.
42:03As the sun sets on their time in the Deep South, the boys prepare to say goodbye.
42:08It's been an interesting trip to Memphis, I think.
42:11What did you think on the pool front?
42:13Just pleased with the hustle.
42:14Yeah.
42:15As far as playing the top guys, I think Johnny gave me a bit of a lesson.
42:19He had my number.
42:21Yeah.
42:21Graceland?
42:22Graceland.
42:23I thought it was fantastic, and the Martin Luther King Museum, that for me has been probably
42:29the highlight trip.
42:30It definitely hit you.
42:31It was an education.
42:32But we were both really moved, weren't we?
42:35Yeah, yeah.
42:36Unbelievable.
42:37It's been a learning curve, and that's got to finish, isn't it?
42:40Over the mighty Mississippi.
42:42Yeah.
42:42The sun's setting.
42:43Oh, I know.
42:43I know.
42:44We do pick our moments, don't we, eh?
42:47Given that we're on the river, I suppose the good ship, Hustle, sails on.
42:51Absolutely.
42:52Sails on.
42:54Next time, Matt and Ronnie are in San Francisco, where they get a taste of
42:59life behind bars.
43:00Welcome, Alcatraz.
43:02How do you feel?
43:05Check out the future of Paul.
43:07Where are you going for?
43:08The six?
43:09Oh, wrong.
43:10Jesus.
43:11Scary.
43:12And take on the game's greatest big money player.
43:30How do you feel?
43:30What do you feel?
43:38How do you feel?
43:39How do you feel?
43:41I'm just a little bit old.
43:41I'm a baby.
43:42If you're a big monkey, why?
43:42I'm a baby.
