00:01Five times snooker world champion, Ronnie O'Sullivan, is on the ultimate road trip with his buddy, Matt Smith.
00:08So, do I get an ink now? You're the rocket, obviously. If we're going to hustle a little bit...
00:12Yeah. I was thinking...
00:13You could be the peacemaker.
00:16He's visiting four very different cities on a journey of discovery.
00:23Whoa!
00:23Oh, sorry, man.
00:26Whoa!
00:31What a buzz.
00:33What a buzz.
00:34He's going to learn about America's great history.
00:37And there is a pool and billiards connection.
00:40Really, is there?
00:40Yeah.
00:41Mark Twain.
00:42Who's he?
00:45Blond.
00:45Who's Mark Twain?
00:46You just play snooker through your youth. Is that all you did, really?
00:49Yeah.
00:50And it's links with the great game of pool.
00:53I can't believe I'm standing there with his ass.
00:55He'll take on the best at their own game.
00:58I'm one of the greatest athletes that's ever been born.
01:01And even have a crack at the public.
01:04And what do you make of Ronnie?
01:06Stick to snooker.
01:07Stick to snooker.
01:09Just as long as nobody finds out who he is.
01:12Ronnie?
01:14What did you say his name was?
01:16Johnny O'Sullivan?
01:17Ronnie O'Sullivan?
01:18No.
01:18I've never heard of him.
01:21This time, Ronnie and Matt hit San Francisco, where they get locked up in America's most notorious prison.
01:28Welcome to Alcatraz.
01:31How do you feel?
01:33Aww.
01:34Get a taste of Paul's future.
01:36What are you going for? The six?
01:38Oh, wrong.
01:40Jesus.
01:41Did you try and lean on a table?
01:43Yeah.
01:45That's scary.
01:46And go head to head with the game's greatest big money player, Scott the Freezer Frost.
02:03San Francisco.
02:04The setting for more iconic Hollywood movies than you can shake a carefully crafted queue at.
02:11So, if you're planning to cruise the same streets as Clint Eastwood and Steve McQueen, then you need a car
02:18that looks the part.
02:19What is this?
02:20Well, it's San Francisco, mate, and therefore I thought we'd just sort ourselves out with that.
02:26A Mustang.
02:281968.
02:29So nice.
02:30Isn't it?
02:31Yeah.
02:31You happy with that?
02:32I think this is the winner of all the cars.
02:34Do you think so?
02:35Yeah, without a doubt.
02:36I think we're going to look the part driving around San Fran in this.
02:39Don't you?
02:41Sexy car.
02:41Yeah?
02:42Low, long, front-loaded, powerful.
02:46Can I have a go?
02:46No.
02:47Why?
02:48You're navigating today, mate.
02:49That's just the way it felt.
02:50You've got to let me have a little go.
02:51All right.
02:52Well, if you're a good boy and you get the coffees.
02:53Come on.
02:53I'll be a good boy.
02:54Will you?
02:54You know I'll be a good boy.
02:55It'll be the first time.
02:56I'm always a good boy.
02:58Do you have a little look inside?
03:00Yeah, mate.
03:01I'm devastated.
03:03I'm devastated.
03:04Look at this.
03:06Oh.
03:11We are going to have some fun in this.
03:13Can we hear the noise in that engine?
03:15Yeah.
03:15I think we can, mate.
03:16Oh.
03:17Hey?
03:19Oh.
03:20How does that sound?
03:23You've got to have your arm out the window for a start, haven't you?
03:26It's a bit cold.
03:27It's absolutely de rigueur.
03:29De rigueur?
03:30What's that, mate?
03:30I knew you were going to ask me that.
03:32Hey?
03:33What it means is that it's something that you have to do.
03:35Oh, do you?
03:35Yeah.
03:37I'm a very de rigueur person.
03:38No.
03:38You are definitely not.
03:41There we go.
03:43That's a bit.
03:44Oh, mate.
03:44It's a peach.
03:46Oh.
03:55San Francisco was famously built on the gold rush, which explains the name of their equally
04:00famous football team, a reference to the prospectors of 1849.
04:07The 49ers are one of the biggest NFL teams in America, and they've kindly agreed to kip
04:12Matt and Ronnie out for their very own training session.
04:17Been looking forward to this.
04:18We could get beaten up here, aren't we?
04:19Could get beaten up.
04:20Could be.
04:24Right, mate.
04:26Let's get this wonderful gear on and make complete fools of ourselves, yeah?
04:30Yeah.
04:30Good go for it.
04:31I'm not going to be filming me getting my hairy bum out, are you?
04:35Ha-ha!
04:37Ha-ha!
04:38Do you want to see a hairy bum?
04:39I don't know if Britain's ready for that, mate.
04:40It's very hairy, I can tell you.
04:42I have to get my missus to pluck it when I get home.
04:44Oh, my lord.
04:45Oh, my lord.
04:46You're a disgrace.
04:55Whoa!
04:57Feeling good.
04:58Are you?
04:58Oh, I'm feeling very good.
05:00With this amount of gear, I'm exhausted getting changed.
05:02Look like Superman.
05:03What's happening there, mate?
05:04You're looking fits, mate.
05:05You're struggling, aren't you?
05:06I've got the smallest pair of shorts in the world.
05:08Eh?
05:09Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
05:11What are you on to?
05:13Just getting all nice and comfy down there, mate.
05:15Comfy?
05:16You've got to be...
05:17That's it.
05:18Arranged.
05:18I'm ready to go.
05:19Are you?
05:20What do we think, fellas?
05:21All right, looking good.
05:22I'm exhausted.
05:23Oh, hang on.
05:24Hey, how about this, huh?
05:25Look at this.
05:26Hey.
05:27Now the fun part.
05:28I'm not sure we're...
05:29I'm not sure we're deserving of names on shirts.
05:32Trust me.
05:32Just getting it on, you'll earn it.
05:34Put your head in on this rose arm up in here.
05:40Oh!
05:41Try to get your arm up through there.
05:44Flam, it's like a knight getting ready to go to war, isn't it?
05:46Absolutely.
05:47With your liege.
05:51Maxie.
05:51Ready?
05:52One, four, seven, mate.
05:53Six, six, seven.
05:54Flam.
05:55Ready to go.
05:57Let's play ball.
05:58Ready to roll.
05:59Let's go.
06:18What's up, man?
06:19Hey, gentlemen.
06:20How you doing?
06:21Eric Wolford.
06:22Hi, Eric.
06:22Matt.
06:22Matt, nice to meet you.
06:23Eric, Ronnie.
06:24Ronnie, nice to meet you.
06:25Welcome.
06:27Ronnie, nice to meet you.
06:27You guys ready to do a little football today, huh?
06:29Well, we'd love to if you think we're up to it.
06:31I don't think there's any question.
06:33You guys look like football players.
06:34Really?
06:34This is Quentin Dowell.
06:36He's one of our defensive tackles here at San Francisco 49ers.
06:39Do you need a helmet?
06:40Yeah.
06:40You got a helmet.
06:42You don't want to hurt that pretty face.
06:44Huh?
06:45Not really, no.
06:45I imagine you've got quite a big helmet, Quentin.
06:48All right, sir.
06:49Big everything.
06:51They have to root around in the locker room for stuff this whole.
06:53He's a big boy.
06:54We have to feed him a lot of food.
06:55Yeah.
06:56You're a defensive tackle?
06:57Yeah.
06:58So you just hurt people for a living?
07:00Pretty much.
07:01We can let you bang him around a little bit.
07:03Well, okay.
07:03Would that be okay?
07:04I've been waiting a few weeks for that.
07:05That'd be good.
07:07Who's tougher?
07:08That's what I want to know.
07:08Well, he's the sportsman.
07:10I just talk about it, so, you know.
07:12He's a hairy guy, isn't he?
07:13Oh, yeah, he is.
07:14Huh?
07:14Look, he's hairy.
07:15Hey, if you ever got fleas or something, you'd be in trouble.
07:18Yeah, no.
07:19Huh?
07:20Seriously.
07:21My dog on the farm, you know, he'd get fleas, and he'd put a little collar on him, dip him
07:25in
07:25the bath.
07:25You'd be in serious trouble.
07:27Oh, yeah.
07:28Yeah, yeah.
07:28Just to shave it all off, you know?
07:29Yeah, I'd give him a little trim.
07:30You might need a weed whacker or something for that.
07:32Hairy back.
07:33That's just the way he is.
07:34Hairy back, too?
07:34Everything, mate.
07:35Oh, jeez.
07:36Hair all over.
07:37Let's see if you guys got some stuff.
07:38Okay.
07:38Want to jump in some drills there?
07:39Yeah, let's go.
07:40Who wants to be offense first?
07:41Who wants to be defense?
07:42I'll go offense.
07:43Okay, you're with me, and then you're going to go with Quentin.
07:46Yeah.
07:47All right?
07:47We're going to line you up right here.
07:49Yep.
07:49Matt, behind the line here, like this.
07:51Now, when we say set hut on hut, you're going to come off.
07:55Yep.
07:55And you're going to lead with your right foot.
07:57A six-inch step.
07:58And then you're going to come off, and you're going to block Ronnie.
08:01Coming off the ball.
08:02He's right there.
08:03He's right near you.
08:03Just like that.
08:04Right there.
08:05Yeah.
08:05And then drive.
08:06Push.
08:07Right.
08:07Push back.
08:08Follow me.
08:10So I'm going to say set hut, okay?
08:12Yeah.
08:13All right, here we go.
08:15Set hut.
08:16There you go.
08:17Where are you feet?
08:17Where are you feet?
08:19Right.
08:21It's tiring, man, isn't it?
08:22It's good.
08:22You got to extend your arms.
08:23Okay.
08:24Set hut.
08:28Right.
08:29Good.
08:30Whoa!
08:31Oh, sorry, man.
08:32Good.
08:33Whoo!
08:34What's going on?
08:37It's hardy, mate.
08:38It's good though, isn't it?
08:39Yeah.
08:40You're stronger than me.
08:42Set hut.
08:45Whoa!
08:47Hey!
08:48I like this guy.
08:49Sign him up.
08:51So have I got a jockey in?
08:53Hey!
08:54That's...
08:54Listen, he's cheating the drill.
08:55He's trying to make you look bad on TV.
08:57Can you give me a sight?
08:58Huh?
08:58No cheating this time, Ron.
09:00Sad hut.
09:05It's not for the faint hearted this game, is it?
09:07No way.
09:09What a game.
09:10What a game.
09:12Isn't it?
09:13Yeah.
09:14And if you do that a little bit better than the other guy...
09:16Yeah.
09:16You got him.
09:17You got his numbers in your back pocket, isn't it?
09:20Yeah.
09:20I know.
09:21That's what it's about.
09:22That's what sport's about, isn't it?
09:29He's an offensive player.
09:37Ronnie, baby.
09:38Huh?
09:40Ronnie's showing up today.
09:49Well done, mate.
09:49You're good at this.
09:51You're good, man.
09:52Good job.
09:52Thank you very much.
09:54See you again.
09:54I'll tell you what buzz.
09:56This is a fantastic buzz you must have coming out here.
09:58Oh, yeah.
09:59Do you know what I mean?
10:00Thanks, fellas.
10:01Thank you very much.
10:02Awesome.
10:02Great job.
10:03I wish you well.
10:04Thanks for the tips, Eric.
10:05I wish you well.
10:06All right, fellas.
10:07You're always welcome.
10:08Ron, that was good, man.
10:09I enjoyed it.
10:10I see some competitive edge coming out in you.
10:12He'd love that.
10:12He'd knock me over every time.
10:13I'm only little.
10:16Matt, you know, his age might be showing a little bit, you know, but I'd give Ronnie a shot.
10:21He wants to let those hairy legs get some air.
10:23You know, them things are always covered up all the time, so he doesn't need an extra wool coat on
10:27his legs.
10:28Would there be a place for them in your team somewhere?
10:31Uh, mascots.
10:32Uh, I wouldn't recommend seeing them in a skirt.
10:36I'd definitely take the mascot, dude.
10:38I feel wicked after that.
10:40I absolutely loved it.
10:42Quinton got holding me like that.
10:43He was just holding me.
10:43I was like...
10:44Pin you against the wall.
10:45Powerful guy.
10:46Yeah.
10:47Powerful guy.
10:47Yeah.
10:48What about the numbers?
10:49What do you reckon?
10:50Yeah, I think it should be 146, though.
10:51147, that's basically, you know, the 146.
10:54I'm more proud of my 146 than under my 13 147, so...
10:57I got that wrong.
10:58I knew you were going to say that.
10:59I'm not known as the maximum man anymore.
11:02I'm known as the 146 man.
11:04What are you like?
11:05Eh?
11:06No, I'm a rebel.
11:07You are?
11:07I love it.
11:11The boys might be in high spirits after their taste of gridiron, but will Ronnie still be laughing
11:18when he tries to hustle the locals and Paul's number one high stakes player?
11:27Back on the streets of San Francisco.
11:30Ronnie O'Sullivan and Matt Smith are off to hustle the locals, although it seems like they
11:35might be getting distracted.
11:39How did you like it, Ron?
11:41Yeah, I love it.
11:42I love the noise.
11:44Sounds good.
11:45How old was this?
11:4650 years old?
11:46Nearly 50 years old.
11:481968, which of course was the year that Steve McQueen drove this exact model in Bullitt.
11:54What was that, Bullitt?
11:55Bullitt was a famous American film based in San Francisco.
11:58Oh, really?
11:59He's a policeman, yeah, and there's a classic car chase scene.
12:02So that's why we're driving this car in San Francisco.
12:05So you are the Bullitt.
12:08Well, again...
12:08You are Steve McQueen, the Bullitt.
12:10Not really, but...
12:11You are, mate.
12:12This is as close as I'll ever get.
12:13That's what I'm saying.
12:14Just enjoy it for the day.
12:15No, mate.
12:15Knock on.
12:17It's got a grunt on it, hasn't it?
12:18It's amazing now to think that when Ford released it...
12:21Back off a little bit.
12:22Yeah.
12:22And just see what it's got.
12:29Instantaneous, isn't it?
12:30I love that.
12:31It's a happy noise.
12:32Yeah.
12:33You're not wrong, mate.
12:33That's what our mate calls it.
12:34A happy noise.
12:35A happy gurgle.
12:36It's just a happy noise.
12:37Go on, have it.
12:38Let me live, go on.
12:45Heading across town to California billiards, it's time to hustle.
12:49And the boys are hatching a plan.
12:52These boys can play.
12:54What about playing the game a little bit?
12:56You know, like maybe, I don't know.
12:59Playing left-handed or, you know, kind of missing a couple to lure them in.
13:03Left-handed's good.
13:04Yeah?
13:04100.
13:05In order to avoid suspicion, the locals have been told that Ronnie's here for some documentary
13:10filming.
13:11Any of you guys fancy a game?
13:12I've got a friend over here who's a snooker player.
13:15Snooker?
13:16Yeah.
13:16I can't play snooker.
13:17No.
13:18But he doesn't mind playing pool.
13:19Oh, well, that'll be okay.
13:20Yeah?
13:21Yeah.
13:21We'll try some.
13:22You want to come over and...
13:23Sure.
13:24Hi, I'm Bob.
13:25Bob, Ronnie.
13:26Want to play some pool?
13:27Let's do it.
13:28Should we put a little...
13:29Want to play for a small little wager?
13:30Well, a little bit.
13:3110 or 20?
13:32Yeah, yeah, that'll do.
13:3320.
13:3420?
13:34Okay.
13:35Race to what?
13:36Race to three.
13:37Yeah, that's good.
13:38Yeah.
13:40So, it's the first to three, and Ronnie's playing with his weaker hand.
13:44Something Bob doesn't exactly know.
13:51Ronnie's renowned for his ability to play with both hands, a trick that definitely has its
13:56uses.
13:57No prisoners.
14:05However, he doesn't want to scare his opponent off too soon.
14:09Ooh.
14:10See if you don't clear him up.
14:12Yeah, it's a dangerous game if you don't clear him.
14:26Well done.
14:28Bob might have levelled the match, but Ronnie's in complete control.
14:38Normal service is resumed as he closes out two frames on the trot.
14:44I'm just thinking, Bob, before you get your money out, because he can play a little bit
14:50with his other hand.
14:51What about a frame, double or quits, and he plays right-handed?
14:54Okay.
14:55Yeah?
14:55Sure.
14:56Does that seem reasonable?
14:57Good enough.
14:57Put him in a little disadvantage?
15:00Double or nothing.
15:01Tell you what, you can choose which hand he plays.
15:03How about that?
15:03Each shot?
15:05On each shot?
15:07That would be pretty strong.
15:08What do you think, Ron?
15:08Do you want that?
15:10Sure.
15:11Go on then.
15:11Yeah.
15:12Can't really give you a start now.
15:13Yeah, he's a big start.
15:17This time, there's $80 at stake, and Bob seems to have the whip hand.
15:22Has Ronnie bitten off more than he can chew?
15:25Do you like your chances now, Bob?
15:26I like them much better now than they were before.
15:29It's a pretty big spot.
15:32Full of confidence, Bob's literally calling the shots in this one.
15:36left.
15:39Left, right.
15:40Left.
15:43Left, right.
15:46Left.
15:46We're left.
15:52Struggling to get a new ribbon.
15:55Right.
16:00Left, right.
16:02We're left.
16:02left.
16:03I'm going to struggle here.
16:05A smart move from Bob.
16:07The only way to play this shot left-handed is with a rest.
16:12left.
16:14Oh, that was.
16:15Oh, that was.
16:17Oh, that was.
16:40behind the black.
16:47All in hand, eh?
16:49Left or right?
16:50Yeah.
16:53Left or right?
16:54Right.
16:59Good match.
17:00Top man, mate.
17:0180 quid.
17:0280?
17:0280 quid.
17:0380 quid?
17:04Yeah.
17:04The rate you eat, that'll be your lunch.
17:06What about mine?
17:08It was a good match.
17:09I enjoyed it.
17:09It was good.
17:10Yeah.
17:10Yeah.
17:10But I can't take your money.
17:12It wouldn't be fair.
17:13I've enjoyed.
17:14Well, okay.
17:14I've enjoyed trying to hustle you.
17:16Yeah.
17:16Did you think he was being hustled?
17:18Well, when I saw you played equally well either-handed, I suspected there was something going on.
17:24Yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:24Which hand do you think he is?
17:26Uh, I think he's probably right-handed.
17:29Yeah.
17:29Yeah.
17:30Thanks, Bob.
17:30Anyway.
17:31Thank you very much.
17:32Top man.
17:33Thanks for the game.
17:33Nice to meet you.
17:35That's how you've got to do it, really.
17:36You've got to sort of, uh, it's just like a game, innit?
17:39Yeah.
17:40It's a scam.
17:41It's sort of scamming people, really.
17:44Um, didn't like even taking the money off of him.
17:46So I wouldn't make a very good hustler.
17:48Mm-hm.
17:48I'm trying.
17:53A successful hustle under their belts, the boys are heading to the most notorious prison
17:58in America.
17:59But first, the detour.
18:01Now, this is a famous street, mate.
18:03What's this street?
18:03This is Lombard Street.
18:05Oh, wow.
18:06Look at that.
18:07Hey?
18:07Look at that.
18:08What do you think, mate?
18:09It's incredible, innit?
18:10What colour?
18:11They love the car.
18:12They do.
18:13Getting a lot of good looks, aren't we?
18:15Just got to swing it wide, cut it in here, get it in tight.
18:20I've never expected this.
18:22Have you ever been on a twistier road than that?
18:24Nah.
18:25It's like driving through someone's garden, innit?
18:27It is, yeah.
18:29And then look, there's Alcatraz right in front of us.
18:31Is that Alcatraz there?
18:32Yeah, that's the rock, mate.
18:34Nice.
18:35Wow, that's the rock.
18:36Is it really?
18:36Yeah.
18:37That's a mile from there to there.
18:39Yeah.
18:40Quite down to it that far, does it?
18:41No.
18:42You don't want to swim it, though?
18:44Still to come, Ronnie and Matt definitely won't be swimming to Alcatraz as they get a taste
18:48of life in America's toughest jail.
18:51Hello.
18:54Hello.
18:55Hello.
18:57And they get to grips with a virtual world of pool.
19:00Oh, gosh.
19:02Oh, my Lord.
19:02It's turning into a bar fight, this game of pool.
19:09Ronnie O'Sullivan and Matt Smith are continuing their American adventure with a trip to the most famous penitentiary on the
19:16planet.
19:20Alcatraz.
19:23These days, only tourist boats head for the rock, but in its heyday, Alcatraz housed the most notorious criminals in
19:30America.
19:35Two kilometres from shore, the treacherous waters that surround the island led many to claim that escape from this maximum
19:41security prison was impossible.
19:47Although Ronnie's visited prisons before to see his dad, what will he make of a glimpse the other side of
19:53the iron bars?
19:56George.
19:58Welcome, Alcatraz.
19:59Pleased to meet you both.
20:00How are you doing?
20:01You all right?
20:01Let me show you around a little bit, OK?
20:03OK.
20:03Let's go this way.
20:06George worked here for nine years and has kindly agreed to give the boys his own unique tour of the
20:11island.
20:12So this is it, George?
20:14This is the main administration building right here.
20:17Would you like to come this way?
20:19So you were here from 50 to 59?
20:2250 to 59, right.
20:24Not as an inmate, but as a guard.
20:26We should make that clear.
20:27That's for sure.
20:28Make that clear.
20:29However, I've been taken for an inmate many a time.
20:31Oh, really?
20:32To this day, it's known as the toughest American prison that's ever been.
20:37Yeah.
20:41Now we're ending the cell block area.
20:44Who got sent here?
20:46Inmates that were incorrigibles throughout the prison system in the United States.
20:50They would get into trouble there.
20:52They would send it to Alcatraz for a minimum of five to ten years.
20:57So people did get parole here.
20:59This wasn't like a...
21:00No one got parole there.
21:01Maybe one or two only.
21:03All were sent to other penitentiaries and then had to earn their way here.
21:08You had to earn your way here?
21:09By escaping, attacked in a guard, fighting, you know.
21:14Yeah.
21:14Earning in the worst possible sense.
21:16That's right.
21:17Should we have a look at the cell?
21:18Sure.
21:19Let's look at the cell.
21:21So this was it, huh?
21:22This was daily life for the inmates of Alcatraz.
21:26That's right.
21:27So one man to one cell?
21:28One man to a cell.
21:31As you come by here, you recognize this?
21:36Yeah, yeah.
21:37Escape from Alcatraz.
21:38That's right.
21:38Escape from Alcatraz.
21:40You can see how they worked themselves through there and up to the interior to the top of the block.
21:47That's how they did it.
21:48So were these the actual cells?
21:50Yes, that's it.
21:51They actually, those are the actual mass that they made and everything.
21:55When was that, early 60s?
21:5662, when the escape occurred.
21:58Yeah.
21:58And did they make it?
21:59You were here.
22:00Yeah.
22:01Well, I don't believe they ever made it, no.
22:03Once they get on that water, my estimation that it got to them within 45 minutes.
22:09If the, if the tide was running out, that would, that was definitely it.
22:14Out they went out the Golden Gate Bridge.
22:16Really?
22:17You couldn't swim against that tide?
22:19It's too strong.
22:19You've got to be an exceptionally good swimmer.
22:21And how often do these people swim?
22:23Yeah.
22:23However, their bodies were never recovered.
22:26You have this constant controversy that they're still alive in South America somewhere.
22:32I don't believe it myself.
22:35What was it like to work here, George?
22:38Well, it was difficult and confining, I must admit, but I'm glad I did it.
22:42I don't think I'd want to do it again.
22:44Yeah.
22:44Yeah.
22:45What was your first day like coming into the bar?
22:47Well, my first day, believe it or not, occurred right here in the barbershop.
22:53Okay.
22:54And I was put in here at nine o'clock on my Monday morning, the first day of my job,
22:59after my training, of course.
23:01He proceeded to cut his first customer's hair.
23:05The temper of conversation got higher and higher.
23:08Before you know it, the inmate jumped out of the chair.
23:12And Freddie Lee Thomas, the inmate, went after him with a pair of seven-inch barbershears.
23:19Got him in the throat and the heart and the lungs.
23:23And me, like a damn fool, blowing a whistle, trying to separate him.
23:28And in the ensuing battle, he cut my leg ten inches long, cut my uniform and cut the top
23:35of my shoe open.
23:37He ended up in a large pool of blood like that.
23:40And a very strange thing happened.
23:42I'll never forget it.
23:44He went down and kissed him and said, I love you.
23:49Homosexual affair.
23:50That was my introduction to Alcatraz.
23:53What an eventful first day.
24:02You want to get in the cell?
24:04Come on.
24:05Not really, no.
24:07Come on, mate.
24:08After you.
24:09I know it's supposed to be one person for a cell, but just for this.
24:11That's okay.
24:12Just for today, George.
24:20He's actually locked in.
24:22We're actually locked in there.
24:24That's it, mate.
24:25These gates don't open, mate.
24:26We ain't going home.
24:27No.
24:28How do you feel?
24:29Not very well, mate.
24:30No, not great.
24:31You want to get out?
24:32Well...
24:33Doing up a little half hour in here.
24:34I wonder if I remember how to do it.
24:37Hopefully this opens now.
24:39George is on the case.
24:41Come on, George.
24:41Let us out.
24:42Please, George.
24:44Please.
24:46Hang on, George.
24:48George is struggling.
24:52Where is one?
24:55Hello.
24:58Hello.
25:00Hello.
25:03Oh, George.
25:06Beautiful, George.
25:07You okay?
25:07Beautiful.
25:08So, George, D-Block was solitary?
25:11Solitary and segregation, yes.
25:14Time in D-Block here was considerably more difficult.
25:18So, for instance, Robert Stroud, the Birdman, he was in one of these.
25:22Up to the top there, second from the back, and the end up in the top.
25:26Robert Stroud.
25:27I believe he was here 11 years.
25:3011 years in here.
25:31And you were in there 24 hours a day?
25:3424 hours a day.
25:35I'm not proud to admit it, but I used to play checkers with him.
25:40Really?
25:41That's right.
25:41Really?
25:42And why are you not proud to admit that?
25:44Well, if I was caught, I would have been fired.
25:47Oh, would you?
25:47Oh, absolutely.
25:48Because of interacting in that way with an inmate?
25:50That's right.
25:51Right.
25:51And what was he like?
25:53Well, he was fairly well educated because he studied 55 years in prison.
26:00But he was a sociopath, I believe.
26:02Was he intimidated?
26:04No, no.
26:04I was never intimidated by him.
26:06Did you like him?
26:08I associated with him, but I don't say I liked him, no.
26:11After all, he killed two people.
26:13And one was a prison guard.
26:21Stroud served a total of 17 years on Alcatraz before he was transferred to Missouri due to poor health.
26:28He died four years after leaving the rock.
26:33To be honest, I'm pretty used to prisons.
26:35I've been visiting my dad for 20 years, so I went to a lot of prisons.
26:38So going into that environment, I've seen it all before, really.
26:44How many different prisons was he done in?
26:47I think he'd done about 26 prisons all the time.
26:50Yeah.
26:51Moved along.
26:52Yeah, they like to move you along.
26:53They don't like you to get too comfortable in certain places.
26:57But he obviously was quite well-liked by everybody in the system.
27:00So wherever he went, they were waiting for him.
27:02And settled him in pretty quickly.
27:05Yeah.
27:06And I think I had some of my happiest times in prison when I went to see my dad.
27:10You know, we'd have two hours on the visit.
27:12And he's a funny guy.
27:13He'd make me laugh.
27:14And I didn't want him to end sometimes.
27:16So I haven't got the most terrible experiences of prisons.
27:19I wish I wouldn't have had to go through it.
27:21But it is what it is, isn't it?
27:23You know?
27:24Yeah.
27:32Back on dry land, the Mustang roars its way across town to San Francisco's Computer Museum.
27:37Although Matt isn't taking any chances.
27:40You could have jumped that light there, Matt.
27:41Could have done, but I don't have any incidents in the Mustang, mate.
27:45Do you know what I mean?
27:45With this power, you could have just got to...
27:46Steve McQueen did right through.
27:48Absolutely.
27:49Is that what you'd have done?
27:50Yeah.
27:50That's why I'm driving.
27:55Silicon Valley is world-famous for its high-tech industry.
27:58So where better to experience the virtual future of Paul?
28:05Matt.
28:06Matt.
28:07Matt's a good name.
28:08I like it a lot.
28:09Thanks very much.
28:09Thanks for coming by.
28:11Well, no.
28:12We're delighted to be here.
28:12And you might know he knows what to do with a cue in his hand.
28:15But this is a whole new world of cue sports, isn't it?
28:19Yes, indeed.
28:19We have probably the world's best pool simulation that's ever been devised.
28:23So we're pretty excited to be pairing that with virtual reality.
28:28The game uses two small sensors to track the controllers, allowing a player's cueing action to translate into the virtual
28:34world.
28:35Right.
28:35So what do we do?
28:37Okay, cool.
28:37So over here we've got the Vive right here.
28:41And basically you wear it and you can walk around this space just like it was real life.
28:47Wow.
28:47So I'm going to put it on you first.
28:50Welcome to virtual reality.
28:52So go ahead and turn around and face the opposite direction you're in.
28:57Yeah.
28:58Give it a little bit of a walk.
28:59And there you are.
29:00Oh, Jesus.
29:01Yeah.
29:02So it's like you're there.
29:03What's it like, Ron?
29:04It's mental.
29:05Is it?
29:06I can't, yeah.
29:07Yeah, you're okay now.
29:08So those are the controls right there.
29:10Go ahead and move your thumb to that white part and go and click now.
29:14Yeah.
29:14Cool.
29:14Okay.
29:15So now you're holding a cue.
29:17Wow.
29:19How's that, man?
29:19That's crazy.
29:23That's awesome.
29:23Now what do I do?
29:24Yeah.
29:24Go ahead and line up behind that ball again and create that green arrow.
29:27And now you can strike the ball.
29:29Well, I'm locked on there.
29:31What do I do?
29:31Yep.
29:31And lock it.
29:32Yep.
29:33And now use your other hand and hit it just like you would in real life.
29:36Wow.
29:37Oh, very nice.
29:38That's good, isn't it?
29:39It's not a bad break, Ron.
29:40I like that.
29:41Yeah.
29:41So now you can kind of walk around the table and hit it.
29:46How does it feel, Ron?
29:47This is crazy.
29:50Unbelievable.
29:50So I want to get round there.
29:54I want to be over there, though.
29:56Right.
29:57Ah, I've got it.
29:58I've got it.
29:58I've got it.
29:58Yeah.
29:59I've got it.
30:00Okay.
30:01I'm going to try and pop the black in the middle.
30:04Okay, yeah.
30:05Go down there.
30:07Cue on.
30:08Yep.
30:08Yep.
30:11Get down on the line.
30:12Yeah.
30:13Press the green trigger.
30:15Oh, you've got one.
30:16All right.
30:17Ron, you're up and running, man.
30:18But you put it on.
30:19So if I want to go and smash that bottle...
30:21You've got to go smash the bottle.
30:25The whole thing's...
30:26Oh, gosh.
30:27Oh, my Lord.
30:28I'm turning into a bar fight this game of pool.
30:30He's picked the white up.
30:31He's thrown a white at me.
30:32Wicked.
30:33Oh, you've got to have a go at that, Matt.
30:34Yeah?
30:34Oh, it's fantastic.
30:35Yeah.
30:35Look at that.
30:36I can hear you now, Ron.
30:38What, you're just smashing the gas up, Ron?
30:39You're smashing beer bottles for fun.
30:41All right.
30:42What are you doing, Ron?
30:42I'm just getting used to the...
30:44Your RM?
30:45Put...
30:45Place it in uproar.
30:49Aye, aye.
30:50My shot?
30:51Yeah, yeah, your shot, yeah.
30:53Where are you going for?
30:54The six?
30:56Oh, Ron.
30:56Jesus.
30:59Wow.
31:00Cute.
31:00Did we get out of here?
31:01No, no, no.
31:02It's just so real.
31:03You feel like there's a table there.
31:04That is...
31:04Did you try and lean on a table?
31:06Yeah.
31:06Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
31:08Scary.
31:10Honestly.
31:11Oh, mate.
31:12That has freaked me right out.
31:13Only you could lean on a virtual reality table.
31:15No, honestly.
31:16Honestly, it's weird.
31:18That's going to make me laugh for the rest of the trip.
31:20Ha, ha, ha.
31:21Can I take these off?
31:23Yeah.
31:25That's weird.
31:25I can't play now, because it's your turn.
31:27That is weird.
31:29It's mad, isn't it?
31:30We're doing a good job faking it, huh?
31:32Oh, dear.
31:34Has that ever happened before, someone fell over?
31:37We've seen it before, but that was amazing.
31:40Why was it amazing?
31:41Because just the fact that your suspension of disbelief was so strong.
31:46Like, I just think that's awesome that we're able to achieve that level of immersion.
31:52Okay.
31:54Oh!
31:56Did you need to fall over?
31:57I did, you know, because I'm thinking the tables are the same as you.
32:00That's what I'm saying.
32:00You forget, you forget.
32:02I did the same as you.
32:04The thing is, your arm wouldn't be like that when you're playing a shot.
32:07It wouldn't be like that.
32:08You want to be here.
32:09See, like that there, you should be here with his backhand.
32:13Cool.
32:13That's good to know.
32:14Do you know what I mean?
32:14Yeah, yeah, yeah.
32:15That's more of a natural position.
32:16Yeah, totally.
32:17Like there, I feel like, ugh.
32:18Right, you get more strength and velocity there.
32:21You need to be here, yeah, yeah.
32:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
32:22All right.
32:23You want me to grab those controls for me?
32:24Thank you, man.
32:25Yeah, certainly.
32:26Guys, thank you for playing.
32:28That was awesome.
32:29Remember this world?
32:30Did you forget about this one?
32:32Oh, what a shame to come back.
32:34Yeah.
32:35I quite liked it in there.
32:36Yeah, good.
32:36Yeah, that is good fun, isn't it?
32:38Yeah.
32:38Thank you very much, man.
32:39Yeah, thank you for playing.
32:41Lovely.
32:41That is excellent.
32:42That is a glimpse into the future, isn't it?
32:44Yeah.
32:45Leaving cyberspace, it's back to the real world.
32:48And there's a very distinct possibility that Ronnie could be heading for another takedown,
32:53when he locks horns with the biggest prize money player in pool, Scott the Freezer Frost.
33:02Ronnie O'Sullivan and Matt Smith are one match away from completing their San Fran tour.
33:08Although it sounds like Ronnie might have other ideas.
33:12I mean, why would you want to go home?
33:13Come on, let's have it right.
33:15Should we just bring everyone else out here?
33:17No, leave them there.
33:18Let them just stay there.
33:19They'll enjoy it.
33:20Let them stay in their little bubble.
33:22Because I am absolutely...
33:24I don't know.
33:24I've been wasting my life, I think, for the last 20 years.
33:27And I've travelled as well.
33:28Of course you are.
33:29I've travelled to China, to Thailand.
33:31But them places, for me, I don't feel like I can see myself living and settling there.
33:37Maybe I've not seen the right parts of China.
33:38But having what I've seen of America, I can see why people love this place.
33:43They want to be here.
33:44They want to live here.
33:45They want to live here.
33:46But unfortunately for Ronnie, it's also a country that's got this man.
33:51Scott the Freezer Frost.
33:53He's earned a reputation as the number one high-stakes player in world pool.
33:58Icy cool under pressure, this guy is definitely not someone you want to bet big with.
34:03$10.
34:04A little sportsman's better, $10?
34:05Yeah, $10.
34:06Maybe, what do you think, $10 a frame?
34:08No, we're paying $100.
34:09Make it interesting.
34:10$100?
34:10A little bit interesting.
34:11You got it.
34:11Let's go for it.
34:12Let's do it.
34:12Race to five.
34:13Yeah, race to five.
34:14Play well the Freezer.
34:15Play well the Rocket.
34:16Exactly there, look.
34:17Let's do it.
34:18This guy's dinner.
34:21With an even hundred resting on the match, a thunderous break from the Freezer starts a race
34:27to five.
34:28Ho, ho, ho.
34:29Nice rack, Matt.
34:32I've learned something on the road, Scott.
34:36This guy's playing with his opposite hand.
34:38Yeah, yeah.
34:39He does do that.
34:40Pretty fancy.
34:43So what was your biggest payday?
34:46You must have had...
34:461.2 million.
34:48He was a professional poker player.
34:49Was he?
34:50Yeah.
34:51Or he was.
34:52Yeah, he was.
34:53He was.
34:55I was up 300 and some thousand on him and we decided to play a set for 300,000.
35:00So he brought the money in a duffel bag, all fives, tens, and twenties.
35:05It literally took me and another guy six hours in this safe deposit room in the casino
35:11to count his money.
35:12And he was mad.
35:13Yeah.
35:14So he did it intentionally.
35:15Before the internet came along, it was really nice.
35:18I could go around and make some nice games and not have any problems, you know?
35:22It was nice.
35:23I made several million dollars.
35:25Did you?
35:26But now, with the internet and the tournaments are real tough in the country, so money games
35:32are few and far between, but you definitely have to set them up.
35:35Look at this guy.
35:36I know.
35:36Nice out, Rocket.
35:38Opposite handed, Shag.
35:39Not bad.
35:40So how did the internet affect things?
35:43Why did that pull things back?
35:44Well, for instance, I would go to a town and I would beat a guy out of two or three
35:50thousand
35:51and I'd be in the next town for another week before they knew that I was even in the town
35:55previous.
35:56Gotcha.
35:56So now, I mean, I can't go to the bathroom without people knowing where I'm at.
36:02One down, the freezer sets out to level the scores.
36:12Right here, Matt.
36:14Yep.
36:14Gotcha.
36:22You better run out now.
36:24Yeah.
36:27I'll go for the bank.
36:30Fourteen.
36:31From there.
36:35No.
36:36That was terrible.
36:38Rack them up, Matt.
36:40I will.
36:41I will.
36:41For the pocket.
36:47Oh.
36:48Woo.
36:49So one each and on Scott.
36:56It's all you, Rocket.
37:00Oh.
37:02It's all you, Rocket.
37:12Oh.
37:14Nice.
37:17Nice.
37:18Quarter pocket.
37:20Nice.
37:222-1 to Frost, and his speed around the table is catching Ronnie's eye.
37:28Got a nice natural style, isn't it?
37:30Yeah.
37:30That's good.
37:31Things I'm in.
37:32Yeah.
37:33Doesn't hang around as much as some, does it?
37:35No.
37:35Bit like you, actually.
37:37Sees it and just plays it.
37:38Yeah.
37:38You go in or they don't?
37:40Yeah.
37:40It doesn't hang around.
37:50Uh oh.
37:50My snooker abilities better show up here, Matt.
37:59Oh.
38:00I left a rock in an opening.
38:06That shot has to be a hanger on one of these.
38:10Look at this.
38:11I don't like that.
38:19How'd he hit it?
38:23Nice out.
38:24Well done, man.
38:26So two each, and Scott's a break.
38:33That's a big break.
38:34Yeah.
38:36Until that cue ball went off the table.
38:38Yeah.
38:39So where's home?
38:40Phoenix, Scottsdale.
38:41I'm actually building a big club, my own club there.
38:45Nice.
38:45Right now.
38:46Yeah.
38:46My dream.
38:46And is it still a life on the road or do you get to?
38:49No.
38:49I quit that a long time ago.
38:52Yeah.
38:52I actually got robbed when I was 25 and, you know, they had a gun to my head and they
38:58tried
38:58to do me in and I got lucky that it jammed on my forehead.
39:02But they did pistol whip me about 60 times.
39:06That was in Houston, Texas.
39:07And that was pretty much, that slowed me down.
39:11Yeah, yeah, yeah.
39:19Oh.
39:22Oh.
39:24Wow.
39:26Nice shot.
39:29Nice out.
39:313-2.
39:32And the match is notching up a gear as both players sense an opportunity.
39:40Yeah.
39:43Four in pocket.
39:46Look at that.
39:47Very nice.
39:483-0.
39:49This match is going down to a wire.
39:52I keep doing that.
39:53That's right.
39:54It's lethal.
39:57There's that stroke.
39:58Mmm.
39:58I love that stroke.
40:00Mmm.
40:10I love that stroke.
40:11Nice shot.
40:17Here it is.
40:18Ronnie, it's getting colder in here.
40:19The freezer is taking effect.
40:21It's getting chilly.
40:214-3 to Scott.
40:23He needs one more.
40:24Ronnie needs two.
40:26The kid's got a sledgehammer break.
40:28Mmm.
40:34Got a bit of trouble now.
40:39Great shot.
40:40Thanks.
40:49Quarter puck.
40:55Brilliant.
40:57Thanks, Rocky.
40:57You played Poirier.
40:58I'll play Stuka.
41:00It was an honour.
41:01I enjoyed it.
41:02I enjoyed it.
41:03We lost again.
41:04We lost again, mate.
41:05I think you're unlucky for me though.
41:06I don't think it's me.
41:07I think it's you.
41:07Is it a bit of a bad luck for me?
41:09Well, your rack was impeccable though.
41:11Too good.
41:12Too honest.
41:13It was too honest.
41:14Too honest.
41:14Yeah, we don't do that in America.
41:16No.
41:17No, no.
41:17Top man.
41:17Top man.
41:18Appreciate it.
41:18Thanks, Doc.
41:19He was running out and making some great shots.
41:22So, when it was 3-3, I felt like I had to turn it up a little bit.
41:26That's for sure.
41:27When my heart gets pumping, I start playing a lot better.
41:31Thanks a lot, Scott.
41:32Really appreciate it.
41:32It was an honour.
41:33Thanks, guys.
41:33It's our privilege.
41:34All right.
41:35See you next time.
41:35Have a good day.
41:36Thanks for the money, guys.
41:37We're rowing home, mate.
41:38We are rowing home.
41:39An easy $100?
41:40Easy $100, man.
41:42That guy's easy.
41:44It was a bit low for you.
41:46Yeah, I can't go to the bathroom with $100.
41:48You know, I just can't do it.
41:50He was on a different level, really.
41:52I think he was just toying with me.
41:55So, yeah, he shattered my dreams of becoming a pool player, let alone a hustler.
42:02But do you know what?
42:03I had good fun.
42:04Top guy.
42:05Yeah.
42:05Plays the game the way I like to see it played.
42:09And I really enjoyed it.
42:12Out of pocket, but still smiling, this chapter of Ronnie and Matt's epic road trip is drawing
42:18to a close.
42:19I've loved San Francisco.
42:20It's been one of my favourite places.
42:23I think the 49ers was fantastic to get that up close.
42:27And obviously Alcatraz was something, you know, which was fantastic.
42:31And what made it familiar with Alcatraz was George.
42:33Yeah.
42:33He was such a character.
42:34Yeah.
42:35And he actually, you know, was speaking to someone that had been at that prison when it
42:39was in full swing.
42:40So, yeah, there's so much driving around in the car.
42:43Yeah.
42:43Yeah.
42:44You know, that was great fun and just being in San Francisco is a great place.
42:49Definitely.
42:50Do you know how it was?
42:51Go on.
42:52When you fell over in the VR pool.
42:54Oh, yeah.
42:55I forgot about that.
42:56It was good though.
42:57Go on, son.
42:59It's the San Fran and striking gold, mate.
43:01Yeah.
43:01Well, we didn't strike much gold.
43:03No.
43:14No one took em from ci.
43:16It was good though, but it was a bad.
43:16Yeah, I had to laugh too.
43:22I was like if you don't have to call it.
43:22So, yeah.
43:26I was like a little story.
43:26So, like I was like my iPhone or what I was in the house.
