00:02Australian citizens evacuated from the Dutch-flagged luxury cruise ship MV Hondias after a deadly hantavirus outbreak returned home on
00:10Friday and will undergo at least three weeks of quarantine.
00:14Four Australian citizens, one permanent resident and a New Zealand resident, arrived at an Australian Air Force base near Perth,
00:22aboard a government-chartered flight.
00:25Australian Health Minister Mark Butler said all six had tested negative for hantavirus and showed no symptoms before boarding the
00:32flight from the Netherlands.
00:34The passengers, I'm pleased to say, remain in good health. They were subject to an initial health assessment upon landing,
00:42although they were also subject to ongoing assessment by a doctor on the plane for the entire flight.
00:47And they will be subject, now they have been transported to the Bullsbrook Quarantine Facility to a more detailed health
00:54assessment and that will include another PCR test for the hantavirus.
00:59According to the World Health Organization, WHO, eleven passengers aboard the MV Hondias have contracted hantavirus and three have died.
01:09The WHO has recommended a 42-day quarantine for all passengers.
01:14Health experts have urged calm, noting that hantavirus is far less contagious than COVID-19 and poses little risk to
01:22the wider public.
01:29Thank you for listening.
