00:00And we are breaking news coming in. IPS Praveen Sood gets a year extension as director of CBI.
00:06Sood, who was first appointed as CBI director on a two-year term on May 25-23, was given a
00:14one-year extension in 2025.
00:16Before joining the premier central agency, Sood was the director general of police, Karnataka.
00:22The leader of opposition, Rahul Gandhi, had issued a dissenting note on the process for selecting the CBI director.
00:28He had said that he's not happy with this process.
00:31In fact, this is the second extension that Praveen Sood has gotten.
00:36Because remember his term, which initially got over in 2023, he was then given another one-year extension in 2025.
00:43And now we're seeing another one-year extension, which is being given in May 2026.
00:48Before he was the CBI director, he was the head of the central agency, was the director general of police
00:55in Karnataka.
00:56And Rahul Gandhi has been opposing this.
00:59And he's had, in fact, written a dissenting note on the process of selecting the CBI director.
01:09For more on that, we have Munish Pane joining us.
01:11Munish, we're seeing that Praveen Sood has, in fact, gotten a second extension.
01:16Because we first saw that after he was appointed in 2023, he was given an extension in 2025.
01:22And now he's been given another one-year extension.
01:24Is this usual process of how maybe extensions are given?
01:28And Rahul Gandhi, in fact, has been dissenting against this whole selection procedure.
01:36Well, the High Power Committee comprising of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India, and Leader of Opposition Rahul
01:46Gandhi.
01:46All three of them met yesterday to decide who will be the next CBI director.
01:52The procedure, Jessica, is that the CBI's director tenure is of two years.
01:59But last year, Praveen Sood was given extension, you know, by the High Power Committee.
02:07And this time also, yesterday, when the conversation was taking place, Rahul Gandhi left the meeting saying that he doesn't
02:16agree with the procedure to select the next CBI director.
02:19And that is why he expressed his dissent to this entire procedure.
02:26Now, this is not very usual, but most of the times what we have seen is that there are several
02:32names of IPS officers who are eligible to become director.
02:36That is the list which is prepared by the committee.
02:41That list is, you know, discussed in the meeting comprising of High Power Committee.
02:47And later on, they decide who can be the next CBI director.
02:51As far as Praveen Sood is concerned, he is a 1986 batch officer.
02:55His last three years tenure has been completely clean.
02:59There has been no controversy as far as the CBI director is concerned or as far as the CBI's functioning
03:05is concerned.
03:06So, it went in favor of Praveen Sood in comparison to other candidates who were eligible to become CBI director.
03:13And that is why the committee decided that Praveen Sood should be given one more year of extension as a
03:22CBI director.
03:23And that is why till next year, you know, till next year, May, he is the next CBI director.
03:31That is the top police officer in the country.
03:34So, we are seeing that because of a clean record and because he had been part of no controversies,
03:40they decided to extend his tenure.
03:42In fact, Rahul Gandhi was part of this meeting but he decided to walk off after he found that it
03:47was not going his way.
03:48So, that is the latest that we are getting in on the position of the CBI director
03:52where Praveen Sood is likely to continue for another year.
03:55Thank you so much for joining in, Munish.
03:56We'll see you next time.
