The Junkies debate how bad traffic will be at the new RFK stadium after Metro says the current system 'can't handle' the projected number of fans who will take public transit to the new digs!
Transcript
00:00Metro is out with a study on what will be needed for the new Commander Stadium project.
00:06And it pointed to some big changes while also taking some early ideas off the table.
00:11This is according to WTOP.
00:12How people get in and out of the stadium is becoming one of the biggest hurdles.
00:17Metro is planning for a major shift with more than half of the 65,000 fans expected to take Metro
00:23trains or buses to the games.
00:25But here's what Metro said.
00:28He said the current system can't handle it.
00:30Can't handle it.
00:31Well, they're going to need to make upgrades, obviously, to the existing station there.
00:36Stadium Armour.
00:36I know that there have been discussions about building a new station, but I think that's been scrapped.
00:40They said it would cost a billion dollars to build a new one.
00:43Right.
00:44Apparently, the tracks are curved there, so it would be tougher to build a station there.
00:48Don't know anything about that.
00:50Yeah, that's what they said.
00:50The forecast that it says half or more are expected to take public transport to the game, I find that
00:58number to be...
00:59I think that's aggressively high.
01:01Well, with the lack of parking, people are going to be forced into it.
01:04I mean, you could drive and park six blocks away, I guess.
01:09I just feel like half or more are going to be public transit.
01:13That seems like a high number.
01:14Nobody wants to.
01:16It's just there's no place to park.
01:17What may be shocking to you is how many people take the Metro already to games, and that's in Landover.
01:24Right.
01:24And it's not even close.
01:25You've got to walk like 25 minutes.
01:27Put it this way.
01:28It's a long walk.
01:29I read the deal, and I see they're expecting two hours plus or whatever to get home.
01:35That'll rule it out for me.
01:37I'll go one time to see it, but if it's legit a two-hour wait to go home, I'm out.
01:47I'm just not going to go.
01:49That's where season ticket holders, they're just either going to find a spot that's there on the campus near the
01:55stadium to hang out post-game.
01:57Right.
01:58They're just going to have to block off their whole day.
02:01That's going to be their thing.
02:02They have some plans, so right now the Stadium Armory Metro Station can move about 14,000 people an hour.
02:10So they believe that it would take a little bit more than two hours to clear the crowds after an
02:17event.
02:17Can you imagine waiting for a train for two hours?
02:20No.
02:21Get out of here.
02:22Not happening.
02:23They're going to use...
02:24Not for me.
02:25And I don't fully understand that they're going to meter customers into the station after games and add more staff
02:30to keep people moving to prevent bottlenecks.
02:32Yeah, I don't know what all that means.
02:34Is that kind of like front-of-the-line passes if you go to Disney?
02:38Maybe.
02:39They're going to kind of tell you when to go?
02:40I don't know.
02:41I wouldn't mind that.
02:42That would make it better.
02:43I would rather be able to go to a bar or restaurant and have a meal or something and know,
02:48okay, my turn is to go is at 616.
02:51You know what I mean?
02:52Versus waiting on the tracks or being packed in like sardines.
02:57You've run the Marine Corps Marathon.
02:59Both of you guys have, I think.
03:01It's a nightmare in D.C., the Marine Corps Marathon.
03:03And we had to use public transportation because there was no parking at that time for us.
03:08And almost got trampled.
03:11Ended up getting on a bus.
03:13And it felt like it was in India.
03:14I was lucky to survive.
03:16Yeah.
03:16Lucky to survive.
03:17They're projecting.
03:18That's what it's going to be like going to Skins game.
03:19There's only going to be about 8,000 parking spaces.
03:22Right.
03:22All right.
03:23So where are all those people going to go?
03:25Where and how are they going to get there?
03:27They can't just park in front of someone's house.
03:29Right.
03:31There's not going to be enough spots.
03:32I don't know where they're going to be.
03:32There's going to be 40,000 fans taking public transit.
03:35Think about that.
03:3740,000.
03:38That's a no for me, dog.
03:40That's a no for me, dog.
03:41I mean, when you build a stadium right in the middle of the city, that's what you've got to do.
03:45It tells me those bars and restaurants, they're going to make an absolute killing.
03:49Sure.
03:50The days of the game, especially because you're going to have this huge captive audience that can't go anywhere.
03:57Yeah, but that sucks.
03:58I mean, let's be honest.
03:58Most people, we go to your pregame.
04:01It's not great.
04:02You go to the game.
04:03And then when it's over, you want to go home.
04:06At least I do.
04:07I think the vast majority of people do want to go home.
04:10I want to go home.
04:10But you do see people, even at Northwest Stadium, they're still tailgating in the lots after the game is over.
04:17I know.
04:17Because they'd rather be there than be stuck in traffic trying to get to the Beltway for an hour.
04:22I don't know what's down there.
04:23So maybe there are certain spots in those neighborhoods where just residents can charge 50 bucks a car just to
04:30park.
04:30I'm sure they're going to do that.
04:31I don't know what's down there.
04:33There's limited space.
04:34But that's what...
04:35To be determined.
04:35That's going to happen.
04:36Yeah.
04:36In fact, I would do that instead of taking the public transit.
04:41I'm not doing that.
04:42You pay somebody that lives there 75 bucks to park, and then you just get out whenever you want.
04:46Let me tell you something.
04:47It's borderline terrifying when you have 5,000, 10,000 people, whatever the number is, trying to get into a
04:53metro station.
04:55Because I've done it.
04:56It's borderline terrifying.
04:57Yeah.
04:57I haven't done it, and I won't do it.
05:00Yeah.
05:01I do it all the time.
05:02No, but it's fine to ride metro.
05:04I'm talking about when you have 10,000 people squeezing into one station.
05:09I did it here for the Marine Corps Marathon.
05:12You know, I thought you could lose somebody.
05:15It may not be that much, but when you leave a Wizards game or Caps game or a concert and
05:21you take the metro, there's a lot of people pouring in.
05:23Oh, there's tons.
05:24Yeah.
05:25I'm out on that.
05:25I haven't done it in a while, but I have memories of it.
05:28I've done it in the back.
05:29I might have a legit fear of that, being trampled.
05:321-800-636-1067.
05:35Does this worry you as a Commanders fan?
05:37Everybody's fired up about the new stadium, but lack of parking and what they're projecting in terms of using the
05:46metro, does it kind of freak you out?
05:48I'm going to guess most aren't worried about it yet because the stadium won't be ready until 2030.
05:53I'm going to guess most people, even season ticket holders, aren't sweating it.
05:57They're not thinking about it yet.
05:58They're not sweating it yet.
05:59Don't deal with it when it's closer.
06:02Week one of the 2030 season.
06:04That's when they'll worry about it.
06:04If there was enough of a backlash for, and I could probably use a better word, but let's just use
06:10the word backlash.
06:11If there was enough of a backlash, maybe there would be momentum to build the other metro station, which would
06:17cost a billion dollars.
06:19Who's going to pay for that?
06:21Who's going to pay a billion dollars to build a new metro station?
06:24They tax.
06:24That's what they do.
06:27So I'm going to pay to build a new metro station that I'm never going to use?
06:30The unhappy D.C. residents.
06:32If you live in D.C., you would.
06:34Yeah.
06:34You're not going to pay it in Maryland.
06:36Well, they're also going to try to tax people from Virginia and Maryland because they're coming in and using the
06:40system.
06:40Well, I don't have sales taxes, sure.
06:42They're not going to tax people to build a metro.
06:45Well, they're not taxing me to build a metro in D.C.
06:48I mean, you may think you're not getting taxed.
06:50It's probably hitting your pocket.
06:51No, I know I'm getting taxed.
06:52It's hitting your pocket somehow.
06:53Believe me, Spanberger's taxing me for everything.
06:55But I don't think that would be one of them.
06:58Here's the thing, though.
06:59Well, you know, they extended the metro on 66 for years and years and years.
07:05Got it all the way out close to you, right?
07:08The metro?
07:09It is.
07:09It's in Ashburn, yeah.
07:13It goes all the way to Ashburn.
07:14It took far longer than they projected and cost way more than they projected.
07:19That's just the way it works.
07:19But they're estimating that a new station would cost a billion?
07:23And it wouldn't be ready.
07:24It probably would cost two billion.
07:24And it wouldn't be ready by 2030 when the stadium's going to be ready.
07:27No, not unless you start building it today.
07:30And then it might not even be ready.
07:32Who knows?
07:32I don't know.
07:33They say that's for how long have they been building the metro through the University of Maryland.
07:37Several years.
07:38Well, they've been building one in my neighborhood for seven, eight years, it seems like.
07:44There's always delays.
07:45It started about 2020.
07:46It took forever for the...
07:46What is it, the purple line?
07:47For the Ashburn stop.
07:49To be completed.
07:50It took forever.
07:51Because there's always delays.
07:52I feel like the Tysons one went up fairly quickly, relatively, but maybe I'm wrong.
07:57This one in Kensington is taking forever.
08:00From Reston to Ashburn, it took forever.
08:021-800-636-1067.
08:05I think most people are super excited about the new stadium.
08:10Most people are happy it's coming back to D.C.
08:12They're not going to miss FedEx in Landover.
08:15No.
08:16Won't be missed.
08:16But they're probably going to have to take their medicine.
08:19Going to games and leaving games.
08:22Yeah, but guys that are like us, that are just going to go to pop-in every once in a
08:25while,
08:26it'll reduce the pop-ins.
08:28Maybe.
08:29Yeah, it'll keep them to a bare minimum.
08:31I will not.
08:33This is my pledge to you.
08:35I will not stand in a two-hour Metro line.
08:39It's not going to happen in my lifetime.
08:41I pledge to you.
08:42You need parking.
08:43Yeah, you need a parking book.
08:44You need to get a little VIP parking book.
08:46It's not going to happen.
08:47Yeah.
08:47You know, you got to be...
08:48Or take an Uber to, you know, six blocks away and walk.
08:51You got to have an enthusiasm for humanity that I do not have.
08:54When you go to a stadium, though, a lot of times you're going to have delays and backups.
09:00That's one of the things.
09:01The advantages, when Cakes and I used to do the post-game show from FedEx,
09:06there were a lot of people that hung around for an hour, hour and a half just for traffic to
09:11clear out.
09:11Those are people that drove to the game, and they're just waiting for traffic to clear out.
09:16That's different than being borderline trampled in a Metro situation, which I've experienced.
09:25It's terrifying.
09:27It sounds like a disaster.
09:29It does.
09:29It doesn't sound optimal.
09:30I know that.
09:31I can tell you one thing.
09:32I pledged to you.
09:33Yeah.
09:34I will never go to a game at the new RFK.
09:36Oh, I'm not pledging that.
09:37I don't know.
09:37Unless you pay me to go.
09:39I'll drive.
09:40Look.
09:40I'll drive.
09:41No, I'm not doing that.
09:42But didn't you say that about FedEx and you went to FedEx a couple years ago?
09:47I did say that.
09:48Yeah.
09:49But I had VIP parking.
09:50You have a history of making pledges and then going against your pledge.
09:54I pledge to you I'm not going to the new RFK.
09:55You shouldn't make that pledge.
09:56Why?
09:57Because you might want to see it.
09:58You're not going to have an asterisk?
09:59I want to see it.
10:00Why do I want to see it?
10:00You're not going to have an asterisk?
10:01I think it's going to be nice.
10:01What if you get parking right up front?
10:04What if you get amazing parking?
10:05You wouldn't go?
10:06Probably not.
10:07Didn't you pledge you weren't going to go back to the Atlantis and you did?
10:10Yes.
10:11Again, I'll say it again.
10:12I pledged to you I won't be going to the new RFK.
10:14You pledged you were going to have a party at the house.
10:15We hit number one ratings.
10:16You didn't.
10:18You've got a lot of pledges.
10:20Well, I'm making another one.
10:22Let's go to Dante.
10:23Forward on the pile.
10:24In D.C.
10:24Dante, what's up?
10:28Dante.
10:28Are you there?
10:30What's up?
10:30Hey, buddy.
10:31How's your inferno?
10:31I was told to come off the speaker.
10:35So I communicate this information with friends that I work with all the time.
10:40Most of us are native Washingtonians.
10:42I just don't see how they're going to make this work.
10:44First of all, the truth is, it's kind of foolish to want to put a stadium in the middle of
10:52the city, especially when the armory is right there.
10:57Thinking about where it is, how it sits in the train tracks.
11:02I'm not talking metro, but we're talking the train tracks for logistic movement of product that comes through, through the
11:08railroad.
11:09That still flies through there.
11:11Where they're going to get the parking, where they're going to be able to actually service these things correctly.
11:16It just doesn't make any sense to me.
11:18Our infrastructure is too, too small in that area to have a stadium redone there and think that it's going
11:25to be a successful long term.
11:27I catch the metro just about every day.
11:31We have the metro that is completely filled now.
11:35What is going to happen when you're trying to move cars and people through that area, going back and forth
11:42to work on a regular basis, not during game time?
11:46The traffic is already horrendous coming through there in 295.
11:50If you just drive up East Capitol Street and see it, you'll see there's just not enough space to redo
11:56that thing the way that they're talking about doing it.
11:58Not unless you plan on taking the parking, I don't know, four flights below ground.
12:02But I just can't see that happening.
12:04Not for the money they've said.
12:06I'm done.
12:07Thank you, Dante.
12:08They are going to have high-rise parking garages.
12:11Those would be a nightmare to get out of.
12:13Can you imagine being on the top?
12:14I'm sure this is unrealistic and maybe unpopular.
12:16You have to leave after the third quarter.
12:18Can't they just take a wrecking ball to the D.C. Armory?
12:21I mean, let's be honest.
12:22That building's been there forever.
12:26You can park a lot of cars with a D.C. Armory.
12:28It currently stands.
12:29What's happening at the D.C. Armory?
12:32I think it's where the D.C. National Guard does their training.
12:35Okay.
12:36Can't they train somewhere else?
12:37There's got to be another spot, somewhere in D.C., where the D.C. National Guard can do their training.
12:42How about you take 10 wrecking balls to the Armory and you put up some big-ass parking garages?
12:48But they have events there.
12:48I was a ring announcer for an MMA event there once.
12:52They have Nubs events there.
12:53That's fine.
12:53There's like 2,000 people.
12:55Those events can be moved to a different venue.
12:59Let's knock down the Armory, and then that solves a lot of the problems.
13:04Send that memo to Josh Harris and company.
13:06How many parking spaces are you creating by knocking down the Armory?
13:09You think I know that off the top of my head?
13:11It might not.
13:11Juice might have you worth the squeeze.
13:13Yeah.
13:14I'm sure they've thought about it.
13:17Probably.
13:17It's a pretty big footprint.
13:18It's a big building.
13:20I mean, it can hold 10,000 people.
13:23It can't hold 10,000 cars.
13:24You know what?
13:25Build a freaking parking garage 30 stories high.
13:29Who cares?
13:29You can't because of the planes.
13:31Planes.
13:33You're worried about the planes.
13:34You put four blinking red lights on the top of your 30-story parking structure, and you're good to go.
13:39Let's go to Campbell.
13:41It's D.C.
13:42Schmoning.
13:43Campbell, what's up?
13:44You're all with the jokes.
13:45Good morning, boys.
13:46So, I hear you have the bitterness early in the morning.
13:50Yeah.
13:50So, I'm looking for you.
13:51The four of you live in Maryland and Virginia, and we don't complain when we have to drive a wolf
13:56trap and whatever.
13:59Oh, you can play my time again, Larry.
14:01You don't listen to Shelton off the deal.
14:03I listen to you guys plenty of time.
14:05I listen to you.
14:06Terrestrial radio in the house.
14:07I appreciate it.
14:07That's how much I listen to you guys.
14:09So, my thing is, I live four blocks from the area, from Armory State.
14:13I grew up around there.
14:14There's never going to be enough parking for anybody because the city wants you to commute by bus, train, Uber.
14:22So, we can say, let's put a commuter tax for all you people in Maryland and Virginia, and we can
14:28build all the parking structures you want.
14:30But I know you don't want to pay that commuter tax to come in D.C. for the 40, the
14:35four hours.
14:36So, unfortunately, there is space for parking garages.
14:39But you're going to have to pay $70, $80, because I'm a national plan holder, and an opening day is
14:46a disaster paying $100 to park.
14:49So, if you command your fans, if you want to come in the city and enjoy the product, there's a
14:55fee that's going to charge you.
14:56You can either pay for Metro or pay for high-dollar parking.
15:00So, Lurch, E.B., high-dollar parking, baby.
15:05Let's go.
15:06It's the 30th anniversary of the Junkies.
15:09You're not hurting for funds, so it'll be fine.
15:13I'll pay for parking.
15:14That's different.
15:15I'm not going to stand next to 10,000 other people waiting for a train.
15:20How far away do you live from a new R.K.?
15:22I said four blocks.
15:22Four blocks?
15:24Yes, four blocks.
15:25What's it look like now with the construction?
15:28I mean, the construction, you can see the tore-down remnants of it.
15:32Right around where you talk about the armory there, but there's this whole section of open land underneath the metro
15:40station where they have a farmer's market.
15:43There's parking there, so I know that farmer's market.
15:45Farmer's market?
15:46You can pull that thing right out of there.
15:48Are you kidding me?
15:49Somebody's saving up space with fresh-baked bread?
15:52Get out of here.
15:53You need parking spots.
15:55Again, I guess that's coming.
15:57Would it be worthwhile?
16:00I mean, could you see a future where you sell parking at your place?
16:04Oh, so I live in an apartment, and I park in the alley behind my place, so I don't have
16:09to worry about that type of traffic.
16:12Gotcha.
16:12Gotcha.
16:13Okay.
16:13Thank you, buddy.
16:14Appreciate you.
16:15Thank you, Kim.
16:151-800-636-1067, if you want to chime in, talking about this study that Metro released that it's going
16:24to take another metro station, which they're not willing to build, to move 40,000 people after Commander's game.
16:33Is it a nightmare that's going to keep you away?
16:351-800-636-1067.
16:38We'll get into that more, and we've got a Dewey Beach update.
16:41Don't go anywhere.
