00:00and day the former producer of this show and a good friend of mine who does so much good work
00:06in so many places he is a co-host on an overnight show uh on westwood one sports radio with
00:14our guy
00:14linnell he is the host of the commander's pre and post game shows on this station and 106.7 the
00:22fan
00:22and he's a big college football guy on sirius xm but he has been out at every practice so far
00:29during training camp and was there yesterday for the dolphins joint practice with washington so uh
00:39let's just start with your overall headlines from the joint practice i know you were making your way
00:46your way around both fields um as the defense worked against miami's offense on one field the
00:52offense worked against miami's defense on another but give me your big headlines from the day
00:57tongue-in-cheek is that boy miami sucks um the actual headline is that boy jay daniels is really
01:03really good you know he's really starting to understand what they're trying to do on offense
01:08and i think we're seeing once he starts to get the hang of things i think we kind of saw
01:13this in his
01:13rookie season but once he starts to get the hang of things he really takes leaps and bounds quickly
01:19in terms of his understanding and i thought that was on display probably the most yesterday which
01:24would be the biggest headline all right so what specifically about jayden daniels stood out to you
01:32he really processes well he's quick to go through his reads he throws over the middle of the field
01:38he understands where everyone is supposed to be everyone is in the right spot we know from last year
01:43that's very important and that was not always the case in 2025 but he started to build a really
01:49really good chemistry and just kind of understanding that when you know where everyone's supposed to
01:54be it makes it really easy to play with the defense with your eyes and i think we started to
01:58see that a
01:59little bit yesterday just kind of moving safety's linebackers around a little bit just to give himself
02:03a little bit of space to give him and his guys a little bit of a window and then delivering
02:07the ball
02:07where it needed to be what did you notice about the 11 on 11 work like and what i'm getting
02:14at is
02:15the comfort comfort with him being under center the amount of him being under center um the lineup
02:23that was with him you know when they went ones versus ones who was out there who wasn't out there
02:28so that's the part that's one of the things that i really didn't love about yesterday is and maybe to
02:35an extent in the long term this is a good thing they had every wide receiver out there with him
02:40for
02:40the most part i mean within reason like with respect to river crawcraft and nick nash they weren't
02:45getting time with the ones but they had formations with diami treylon and luke they had stefan terry
02:51and luke they had uh stefan luke and tre like they they kind of mixed and matched what they were
02:56doing
02:56on offense which in one instance is like really nice to get everybody reps with jayden but i wanted to
03:02see terry diami or terry uh digs and then whoever they wanted to put it three which i think is
03:08going to
03:08be luke at least for the next couple of days and weeks i wanted to see a lot more of
03:12those and we just
03:14didn't terry didn't do a whole a whole lot yesterday he made a couple of big catches but
03:19it felt like he was the guy that was off of the field a little bit i don't know they
03:23haven't said
03:24he's dealing with something but i kind of got the feeling that he's dealing with some soreness or
03:29something along those lines so i would have liked to see him on the field with jayden a little bit
03:35more in terms of the comfortability uh he looks really really good on the move and i think we kind
03:40of started to ask that last year like hey can we move the pocket a little bit for jayden daniels
03:45he throws with really really good accuracy really really good touch on the move and i think that's
03:50probably been the biggest takeaway from the under center stuff is that even if he does turn his back
03:54to the defense slightly it's not like this be all end all the plays dead he can still understand what
04:00the defense is trying to do nothing surprises him when he turns his head back around so i think
04:05that's the thing i've been most impressed with with the under center stuff it's not going to be like
04:0990 of the time we know that you know they might be doing under center stuff like 35 of snaps
04:14this
04:14year but it's going to be a lot more than what they did last year yeah for those that that
04:20don't know
04:20like even the teams that led the league in under center snaps most of the i think the rams i
04:27forget
04:27who the team was there was i think one or two teams that took more than 50 of its snaps
04:32from under center
04:34and then everybody else was under 50 even the teams that did it the most were under 50 of their
04:41offensive snaps so if you're expecting oh my god they're going under center that that means he's not
04:47going to be in shotgun he's not going to be in pistol no the odds are at the end of
04:52the year there
04:53will still be more non-under center snaps than under snaps it's just that the under snap percentage is
05:00going to increase um probably exponentially i would think from uh last year uh did you notice
05:07anything were there any takeaways from the brandon coleman replacement um of laramie tunsel and then
05:15we know that nick allegretti wasn't there yesterday won't be a part of the preseason game either but
05:20what did the o-line look uh to you like by the way i would say that miami defensive line
05:26personnel wise
05:27they've actually got some players i've been a chop robinson guy you liked him too right coming
05:31out of penn state um so maybe you know defensively they've got more uh talent than on offense but just
05:38tell me what your takeaways on the o-line were yeah chop robinson is one of their very few redeeming
05:44qualities within miami he's good and no one else i mean jordan brooks is good uh jacob rodriguez i think
05:51will be good i was gonna ask you because you i think you loved rodriguez at texas tech too right
05:56yeah i really i really liked him he wasn't like super popping um yesterday but i think eventually
06:02he'll he'll be pretty good uh the offensive line really struggled in the run game like brandon
06:08coleman himself i think was fine at left tackle connelly didn't have the greatest day but i do wonder
06:14long term if they're gonna have to make a move to coleman going back to guard because if they're going
06:20to
06:21be a run heavy team you're gonna need better guard play and first of all it's a good play
06:26you know he did a really good job last year but there are a couple of times where they're running
06:30counters and chris paul's pulling and he's just not getting there in time right and brandon coleman
06:34has a level of athleticism that chris paul does not have the problem is that you don't have a left
06:38tackle you know so losing laramie tunsel really throws this thing into chaos and maybe there's
06:43another body in the open market at the moment that you feel like you'd be comfortable with if you go
06:47out and get an ad i don't really want to see wiley playing left tackle but i think brandon coleman
06:53is
06:53going to be better suited for what they're trying to do in the run game playing a guard and i
06:56think
06:57their run game would be significantly better if they have cosme and coleman as the two guards and
07:01then you kind of allow nick allegretti when he eventually comes back which will be soon he this
07:06isn't like a trey amos thing i think nick allegretti is going to be back uh after at their first
07:10practice after the the preseason game but you feel much more comfortable at least i do with a cosme
07:16allegretti coleman interior offensive line than what we're seeing right now with cosme
07:21julian good jones and chris paul um so when we talked before the show that was the thing about
07:30the offensive line that you wanted to say about just chris paul's lack of athleticism at that guard
07:35spot uh there were there was uh two plays where they ran where he was pulling and just whiffed like
07:42the play was blown up really almost before i think it was bill as the running back uh before
07:47bill even touched the ball there's a guy in the backfield because he just didn't get there in time
07:52hmm um all right you know i i i do think that you know these i had somebody tell me
07:59uh yesterday
08:00late yesterday that these joint practices are slowly turning into preseason games meaning
08:07they used to really put stuff in for the joint practices obviously they leave it out for the
08:13preseason games but they're not even doing it in the joint practices anymore no i was expecting a
08:21little bit more competitiveness in certain areas and again maybe that is because like you would have
08:25been stunned how bad the dolphins were i mean they there were times where they didn't look like they
08:29were a real competitive football team especially when it was the commander's defense against their
08:34offense i mean god love malik willis the middle is running for his life he's not exceptionally accurate
08:39i want to get to the defense it's a reminder to everybody that malik willis this time last year
08:46no one even knew where he was or if he was even in the league anymore and then all of
08:52a sudden he was
08:53the number one quarterback available in free agency that tells you what everybody knows about the nfl before
08:58a season uh begins but um yeah i can't imagine it's going to be great right away with malik willis
09:06uh in the nfl.com power rankings did you see this yesterday denton with washington at 29th
09:13did you see that ranking i did see that i'd laugh at that yeah i mean who cares really except
09:21for
09:22i was a bit stunned like come on i mean you can't have one of the top 10 debatable top
09:2910 quarterbacks
09:30in the game and be 29th behind the browns and the cardinals you just can't be um but the dolphins
09:36were
09:37uh the 32nd ranked team all right tell me tell me about the defense uh the defense looked great
09:44you know it like it got to the point so the first 11 on 11 period i was watching the
09:49offense
09:50the second one i tried to watch a little bit of both but the third 11 on 11 period i
09:54was solely on
09:55the defensive side of the field or the other field where the defense was uh was playing and i just
10:01wanted to see what they looked like and they were just beating the offensive line like a drum it did
10:07like pick a name out of a hat and they were making a really really good play charles amenahue with
10:12the
10:12twos was destructive uh javon kinlaw looks really good deron pain was turning the clock back i mean
10:17they just couldn't block anybody the two biggest takeaways of the two biggest stars are on the edge
10:23adefe alway and caleb on chase on have been really good throughout the entirety of camp i was curious to
10:28see what they were going to look like against somebody else they looked the part i mean adefe alway
10:33is going to be a tough dude to block uh this upcoming season he's done a really really good job
10:37and they just love love love love what he is so i was really really impressed with the defense
10:43i couldn't really get a great gauge with the linebackers like that's one of the things that
10:48kind of ended up sucking is the offense for miami was so bad that it became really hard to evaluate
10:54everybody else because malik willis had like a second maybe a second and a half before there was
10:59eight bodies in his face including his own offensive line getting pushed back into his face so he's running
11:06he's doing a lot of cardio uh he made a couple of nice throws obviously mikey sander still had an
11:11interception that was a pretty big deal that got the crowd pretty fired up but i was impressed with
11:15what i saw with the defense i'm just taking it with like a bottle of salt because miami's awful
11:21yeah no i think i think even if it were a decent team you still uh aren't sure in that
11:26um environment
11:27on august 12th you know one of the things i think um there are two things that that have to
11:33happen
11:33defensively we all understand the new personnel the new coordinator etc uh but they have to to turn
11:41what we believe are much improved pass rushers loose like away like chase on by the way dorance
11:49armstrong i mean durante jones went out of his way to single out john baptiste the other day
11:53who i know they liked before he got hurt last year he was another one of those uh defensive linemen
11:59that got hurt along with wise and and armstrong um but they've got to stop the run you know you
12:05can't
12:06you're not going to be a great pass rushing team if you don't stop the run because third and two
12:12isn't a great pass rushing third and three is not a great pass rushing down is there anything about
12:19anything you've watched including yesterday that indicates to you that they've got a chance to be a
12:25much better run stopping team than they've been in the last two years really yeah there's two guys
12:31that indicate they're going to be better 52 sunny styles who they drafted in the first round and then
12:38i think what is sneaky been one of the best acquisitions on defense is the return of tim settle i
12:44think he
12:44does a really really good job uh you and they're going to run a lot of sets where he's on
12:49the field
12:50and he's not like this great pass rusher but he really knows how to occupy space at the line of
12:56scrimmage and i think that is going to be really really beneficial to him because i think
13:01caleb on chase on and odefe away will be good at setting edges which if you remember in 2024 which
13:06you do but if the fans remember 2024 boy they couldn't set an edge i mean they were running
13:11deron pain at defensive end in the playoff in one of the playoff games because they just could not set
13:15an edge i don't really think that's going to be a problem anymore i think they have enough speed on
13:20defense too with enough processing skills to for a guy like sunny styles to read where the hole is going
13:27to be and then get there and beat the running back to the spot yeah i think the one of
13:32the important
13:33things there is is styles being a taller you know um a linebacker you got to do a great job
13:41up front
13:41so that they can't get to them on the double teams um pain settle kinlaw newton etc uh those edge
13:49setters they're gonna have to do um a much better job the other thing i was going to mention is
13:54look
13:55they were 31st in the league last year 26th the year before in takeaways they have not been able
14:01to take the ball away obviously that is a massive massive determinant of football games uh and do you
14:10sense in watching over the first you know week and a half that this is something that they're going
14:16to be better at somebody mentioned to me that amik robertson is outstanding with his sort of
14:21you know risk-taking anticipation you know ball uh ball skills he's been the best corner
14:28by i would say a pretty comfortable margin i mean so when rasul douglas got here he made a couple
14:33of
14:33plays in the first couple days and that really stood out but from the the long-term view of things
14:40amik robertson's been the best corner that they they have there mikey made the pick six yesterday
14:45and he made a good play he understood what they were doing um with the zone knew he had help
14:49over the
14:50top so he could be a little bit more risky on the play where he took it to the house
14:53but
14:54robertson's been the best corner i haven't loved what they've done at the position and part of that's
14:58because trey amos just isn't healthy right he comes back and practices for like a day and a half
15:02and then he tweaks something else that's alarming you know that that's not something that i'm thrilled
15:07with with the allegretti stuff i mentioned earlier you understand the timeline of recovery and
15:13at the very least if nothing else he's following the timeline of recovery for amos to kind of
15:19have this thing pop up that we didn't know about that kept him out for the first few days
15:23and he gets back and immediately has something else pop up not thrilled about that one because i like
15:29amik but i don't know that he can be like your number one corner when you start to see the
15:33the big
15:34boys come to town and they're they're coming to town in you know 20 days right with philly with uh
15:39and then with dallas i mean with cd lamb and george pickens that might be the best one-two combo
15:43i don't know i'm a little worried about what they're doing at cornerback when those two guys
15:49are on the opposite end of you by the way um ben pointed this out to me yesterday they just
15:54can't
15:55keep jeremy reeves off the field can they at safety like he's gonna be a player that's on the field
16:01a
16:01lot and and taking a lot of free safety snaps don't you think he he is so they they've run
16:07a couple of
16:08interesting packages to where sometimes they have three safeties on the field it'll be cross will
16:14harris is the third with cross and then will harris they did a couple of snaps yesterday where
16:20kwan would come in but i mean i wouldn't expect to see your options at free safety are effectively
16:26jeremy reeves percy buller kwan martin and while reeves isn't like this all he's never going to be
16:31an all bro i just don't think that's what he is at this stage of his career i would say
16:35he's probably
16:35the best option of those three i really want to love kwan but it just hasn't you know he had
16:41a
16:42good year in 2024 but last year was brutal and it's it's felt like in training camp so far
16:48that last year was much more of the player that he is in the nfl not what he was in
16:522024
16:53real quickly back to amik robertson and we're talking to denton um he was at the joint practice
16:59yesterday uh out in ashburn is amik robertson playing exclusively inside or not no they're
17:07they're moving him so okay again with with no amos right you're kind of like you're forcing a lot of
17:13guys to be in a different spot but i would say that robertson has actually played more outside
17:19the past few days than inside you know they were there was a few plays yesterday where he was the
17:24outside corner and mikey was the inside corner and then they had either rasul uh douglas or they
17:30would rotate in uh fabian moreau who they just signed like a week ago and he would be on the
17:35other outside so amik robertson has been playing some outside stuff too all right kickers had a great
17:41day uh right now who's the betting favorite to be the kicker in philadelphia on september 13th
17:47uh i would say it's the young kid stevens where number 19 um it feels like he has the leg
17:54up pun
17:54intended on the competition he could have honestly i think he could have won it the other day where
18:00moody missed four in a row in the kicking period and then stevens came out and missed three in a
18:05row
18:05in the kicking period but i think they like i think they like stevens a little bit more than they
18:09like
18:09moody right now but we'll see i mean once they start kicking an actual game action i think that's
18:14going to be a big time uh separator in the competition because you can do it in practice
18:20when you're not really getting rushed at and there's not you know thousands of people screaming
18:24at you we'll see what it looks like in a game even if it is just a preseason game all
18:28right i know i
18:29know you very well so give me the player that you're you know you've watched here for 10 11 days
18:35whatever it's been at this point that you've been paying attention to and that you've kind of fallen
18:41in love with that maybe you know nobody anticipated this player being a big part of the thing
18:46come the regular season who's that player i love colson yankoff i think that tight end room is really
18:53really deep but the way that they use his athleticism i think he has a he has an opportunity
18:59to be a really really big player and with the absence of john bates um for the past couple days
19:05and weeks in training camp he's getting a lot more action he's getting a lot more reps with the ones
19:09not a ton but a lot more i think the athleticism that he has could be a very very sneaky
19:15weapon for
19:15the offense when they're running some three tight end sets with jayden under center so i'm really
19:21excited about what uh what yankoff could be on offense all right thanks for doing this i'll talk
19:25to you later appreciate it yep see ya
