00:06This week, our designers are fighting to become the top gun of interiors at the Royal Navy Air Station in
00:13Somerset.
00:14And with only two days to transform six tired mess decks, they better fill the need.
00:20The need for speed.
00:23Highway to the danger zone.
00:26As for me, I'm going maverick.
00:30Ready for take-off, sir?
00:32Well, you can take off the dirt.
00:36Welcome to Interior Design Masters.
00:41I bet Tom Cruise never had to wash his chopper.
00:50Six designers remain, hoping to partner with a major high street retailer and launch their very own homeware collection.
00:59Last time, the designers worked very closely together.
01:03And is your bum right behind me?
01:04It's right in your head.
01:06At a homelessness charity.
01:08Deserves has got two S's.
01:10Don't do this.
01:12Ajeet and Emily were the dream team.
01:16And one standout space.
01:18Yes!
01:19I'm so happy.
01:20I feel like that inside.
01:21Leah and Johnny just missed the mark.
01:23This corner unit just doesn't live up to what else I'm seeing in the room.
01:27And Ben and Kate did too much.
01:29Every little bit to me is a little bit compromised.
01:32And we're the next to leave.
01:34To go home on this space, I'm really proud.
01:46Weak.
01:46Weak.
01:47Oh, God.
01:48You've blacked out from last week.
01:49Yeah, I've erased the sofa from my memory.
01:52So last week, I had my first experience of the sofa, which I would like to avoid this week.
01:59Here we go, Navy base.
02:02I'm definitely interested in getting into a helicopter.
02:05What happens to go missing?
02:11Oh, hello.
02:12How are we all doing?
02:14Good.
02:15Congratulations.
02:16You've made it to the halfway point.
02:19I think you're really getting into the tongue and groove of it all.
02:22Well done.
02:23This week, I need your attention.
02:27Oh, I love the power.
02:30We've signed you up for the Royal Navy.
02:33You'll be transforming their air base, Mestex.
02:37The Royal Naval Air Station in Somerset is one of the busiest military aviation bases in the UK.
02:44It's a hub for helicopter operations and training the naval aircrew.
02:51Off duty, they spend their time in Mestex,
02:54a communal space for socialising, eating and relaxing.
02:59Each designer will get their very own Mestex to transform for the latest recruits.
03:05This is real Top Gun stuff.
03:08So, talk to me Goose.
03:10Sorry, Michelle.
03:13Wasn't Goose the one that died?
03:15Keep it light.
03:19This is all about creating spaces that are practical and comfortable
03:23as an escape from the regimented daily routine of life on the air station.
03:28Design really can boost morale and mood,
03:31so I want you to show me how you can do that.
03:34Michelle's wingwoman this week is a guest judge who flies high in whatever she does.
03:40After serving in the army for ten years,
03:42she'll be giving your rooms a right proper military inspection.
03:46It's Dame Kelly Holmes.
03:48Oh, wow.
03:49That's insane.
03:50What do you think about that?
03:51An Olympian looking at your rooms.
03:54Amazing.
03:56You've got two days and a budget of £2,000
03:58to transform your messy mess decks
04:02into less messy mech decks.
04:07Mess decks!
04:09Right, okay.
04:09You've got two days and a budget of £2,000
04:14to transform your messy mess decks
04:16into less messy mess decks.
04:20Phew.
04:21Let's hope it's easier to do than say.
04:24Now, get out.
04:25Fly high, my pretties.
04:26Fly, fly before I say it again.
04:30The designers have arrived at the Royal Naval Air Station Yeovleton,
04:34also known as HMS Heron.
04:36Oh!
04:37Oh, my God!
04:39That's a piece of machinery, that is.
04:41To meet their clients.
04:43We're so excited to get to work on your mess decks.
04:46You guys like them currently, or...?
04:48I don't know.
04:49There's nothing that really keeps us in there, really,
04:50because it's just so dull, it's uninspiring, it's boring.
04:54What's the main thing you'd like to use it for?
04:57Socialising.
04:58It would be nice to have a space where in the block
05:00we can all, like, get together
05:01and have, like, a nice space to do it in,
05:03not just, like, beige walls.
05:05Be somewhere to sort of relax, have a bit of downtime.
05:08And, like, not work-inspired.
05:10I don't want to go home and see, like, helicopters on the walls.
05:15I want to go home to, like, a light, bright, nice space.
05:19Right.
05:20Yeah.
05:20We'll give you our best.
05:21Yes.
05:22Bye.
05:22Bye.
05:25While they're on base, the sailors stay in mess blocks,
05:28sleeping upstairs in dormitories
05:30and hanging out together downstairs in their mess decks.
05:34Ooh.
05:35It's a sad space, isn't it?
05:37There's an on-site canteen, but for after-hours snacks...
05:40I've never been able to do that in a room in my life.
05:44There are kitchenettes...
05:46I'm not kidding.
05:47I think my nan had a kitchen that was a bit like this.
05:49..and lounge areas.
05:50I'm going to put a projector screen there
05:52so you can sort of hang out here and watch films.
05:55The designers can start afresh with furniture...
05:58This table can only really sit four and doesn't feel inviting.
06:02..or incorporate existing pieces into their new designs.
06:06Keeping the sofas,
06:07cos actually they're pretty, like, plush.
06:13Store for my new breakfast bar.
06:16I have a second-hand kitchen
06:18that I ripped out of some lovely lady's house.
06:2130 quid.
06:22Absolute bargain.
06:24This is my sofa,
06:25which is the best find in second-hand history.
06:28It's so epic, I can't wait to put it in the space.
06:30It's, like, a round, massive, cool, designer-style sofa
06:34and I paid, like, 450 quid worth.
06:37To help achieve their vision,
06:39each designer will have a carpenter and a decorator.
06:42Morning!
06:43Hey!
06:43Morning!
06:44How are we doing?
06:45So the inspiration for the room is, like, Scandinavian design.
06:49My idea of, like, the navy is quite rigid
06:51and so I wanted to create a lot of softness.
06:53Like, we've got a lot of curvature going on,
06:55a lot of circles.
06:57We're extending the kitchen out to here
06:59and there'll be a partition wall here.
07:02I'm sectioning off the kitchen with my plywood screens,
07:06which I'll have holes drilled out of.
07:07So having the holes in there
07:09adds to this kind of circle curvature thing
07:11that I wanted to bring into the space.
07:12Right, so you've got two full sheets of ply
07:16and that one's five across.
07:19For me, the partition
07:20is the most important parts of the design.
07:22I reckon about 250 holes is going to take him
07:24quite a bit of time.
07:26It's going to be great.
07:26It's going to be fantastic.
07:28It's going to work.
07:30While Johnny's kitchenette is partitioned off...
07:34There's quite a lot to do in a very bare room.
07:37OK.
07:38Don't look too scared, Phil.
07:40Leah's is relocating.
07:42We are going to start with moving the kitchen
07:45out of its current location
07:47and make a really large kitchen island.
07:50My design inspiration
07:51is going back to my Italian roots.
07:54It's really important
07:55that the kitchen
07:55is such a big part of the house.
07:57So kind of a country kitchen
07:59coming into this main section
08:01with some really nice florals and bright colours
08:03to make this space much more vibrant.
08:05It's kind of like home from home.
08:06When I was looking for my own house,
08:08the one thing for me which was no compromise
08:11is the kitchen.
08:11We have this big island.
08:13We host loads of parties
08:14and everyone just socialises around the island.
08:18Leah's placing her bespoke kitchen island
08:21in the centre of her mess deck.
08:23Her second-hand kitchen will be upcycled
08:25with a lick of rich red paint
08:27and brass light pendants will hang from the ceiling
08:30to create a cosy kitchen vibe.
08:33She'll convert the old kitchenette into a pantry,
08:35swapping the wall-hung cabinets for open shelving.
08:40The space will be colour-drenched in a bright green
08:43and a feature wall will express Leah's
08:45botanical maximalist style.
08:48Beyond the kitchen,
08:49she's creating a cosy cinema snug,
08:52adding a new projector, screen
08:54and an ingenious additional seating solution.
08:59The bench will slide into that end, yeah?
09:01Yeah, so basically slot under there
09:03when it's not in use,
09:04doesn't take up too much space in the room.
09:06The bench underneath will be on casters.
09:08Right.
09:08So that part, they can move to the other section of the room
09:11if they want to use it in the cinema snug
09:13or they can wheel it back in and use it in the kitchen.
09:15Yeah.
09:15Nice.
09:21Hello, hello, hello.
09:23Hello, hello.
09:25Sophie's colour palette has been inspired by a naval tradition.
09:29Talk me through it.
09:30The goal is to get your colours all the way around the board
09:32and then back into the hole.
09:34The concept I had for the room was based on the board game Uckers,
09:38which is a traditional navy game.
09:40So I wanted to bring that into the aesthetic.
09:43Does the game get played then in the Mestex?
09:46Or would you like it to get played in the Mestex?
09:49We'd probably quite like four of us to come down in an evening
09:51and having the space to do it would be fun.
09:55Oh.
09:55This wall, we're going to do basically a box.
09:59Starting about here.
10:01Essentially, the idea has come from the Uckers board,
10:03from the arrows and blocks of colour,
10:05to take, like, this arrow motif around the room,
10:08wrapping the walls, going over the ceiling,
10:11just to tie that concept together.
10:13I love this colour.
10:15Duran's also got a statement wall in mind.
10:18A really good start.
10:20I've not even done anything yet.
10:22Ugh!
10:23With one of her signature squiggles,
10:25which will wrap up Anna around her mess deck.
10:27I've been inspired by the era that the Airbase was founded in,
10:32which is the Art Deco era transitioning into streamline modern,
10:35which mimics the lines of transport, like, ships and trains,
10:39and the mural will take your eye kind of around the room
10:42and into the kitchen.
10:44It's a really nice technique to get it kind of irregular
10:48and organic, is to, like, shake and turn the brush.
10:51I think it's always a bit nerve-wracking
10:54when you first put the paint on,
10:55because, you know, you have to trust your instincts the whole way.
10:59Ooh!
11:03It feels naughty.
11:05A few doors down...
11:07That black is pretty black, isn't it?
11:11Emily's gone to the dark side.
11:14For someone that wears a lot of black all the time,
11:16I don't really use black in my colour palette.
11:19I always go for, like, bright, poppy colours.
11:22But I wanted to try and see, because it does add drama.
11:27Already the glow of the light on that black is stunning.
11:31I spoke to, like, my brother, who's 19.
11:33I just sort of worked through what he'd want in a space
11:36away from home.
11:38And I think it just needs to be a bit more cooler in here.
11:40And I'm like, well, I'm just going to give you sci-fi,
11:43which is timelessly cool.
11:45I love, like, the sci-fi aesthetic.
11:46And when I was researching, like, what the sailors do,
11:50it is so, like, out of this world.
11:52And it's, like, the ships and the helicopters
11:55and things like that.
11:55And I just sort of wanted to do, like, little winks of sci-fi.
12:01Is that what you wanted it to look like?
12:02I think it would go darker, though, right?
12:03Yeah, it should go darker.
12:04I think if it darkens up a little bit more,
12:06then that would be fine.
12:07On the other end of the colour spectrum,
12:09it's Ajit.
12:10So as part of my research,
12:12I looked into some of the elements of colour theory
12:14and saw that orange is a really significant colour
12:16to symbolise friendship and social interaction.
12:19So that being a key aspect to address for the space,
12:22I've incorporated that in my design.
12:24It already feels like you're, like,
12:25really friendly to me at the moment.
12:26Yeah, I feel happy.
12:27Yeah.
12:29Oh, my God, Rosie, you're flying through it.
12:31Yes!
12:34This is where I wish I had a hundred arms.
12:37How do they kick in here?
12:39You can barely wash a dish in here.
12:42So the existing kitchen is right at the back
12:45and it's a bit dark, it's a bit dingy.
12:48So I've decided to turn that actually into a pantry.
12:52For the tiles in the kitchen,
12:54we don't have time to take them off and change them.
12:57So I'm just using a tile grout pen, which is black.
13:01So I'm just going round basically the current grout,
13:03which is white.
13:05It's super quick, super cheap and super easy.
13:07So it gives it a new kind of facelift.
13:12Sophie's also creating a pantry, complete with some wild walls.
13:17This space is HMS Heron.
13:19So I've got some Heron wallpaper to go in the pantry.
13:22Because it's such a tiny space,
13:23I think it'll make it a lot more interesting,
13:25especially against the open shelving
13:27that's going to be made from reclaimed wood.
13:29Wallpaper looks really cute, love it.
13:32As well as his orange ceiling,
13:34Ajit's adding the traditional British colours
13:36of red, white and blue.
13:39Because we're on a Royal Navy base,
13:41I really wanted to kind of take that thread
13:44and integrate a little bit of that into my design.
13:47This is pinkier than I was expecting.
13:50This is kind of giving me quite Sweeney Todd vibes right now.
13:54They're a bit gross.
13:55Oh, chewing gum.
13:56Yeah.
13:57I'll scrape that off later.
13:59So glamorous.
14:01As well as the Heron and Uckers game inspiration.
14:04Oh, this is nice.
14:07I feel like I'm in the pub.
14:08Can we get me a bag of gifts?
14:10Sophie's also bringing in another theme with her furniture.
14:13I want the sailors to just be really excited by the space
14:19and just hanging out and playing games.
14:21And I think they need a pub.
14:23I think they need the Sophie Tavern to open.
14:29Sophie's tavern will be decked out
14:31with her secondhand Chesterfield sofa,
14:34bar stools, tables and even a piano.
14:37There's a muted version of the Uckers board colours
14:40of red, yellow and blue up the walls
14:42and ceiling.
14:44Along with her statement wallpaper,
14:47Sophie is hanging reclaimed wooden shelves
14:49to her kitchenette for extra storage.
14:53And she's tying her multiple themes together
14:56by creating an L-shaped breakfast bar
14:59from a secondhand kitchen unit.
15:03We need 860 for the height for this.
15:07This is upside down, yeah?
15:09My big breakfast bar, it's looking good.
15:11It's giving storage,
15:12it's giving food prep area,
15:14a games table as well.
15:16So, yeah,
15:16my multifunctional build is coming along well.
15:19Good!
15:20That's all I just plan.
15:23Oh, God!
15:24All the shelves are falling!
15:28Welcome to Sophie's Tavern.
15:29What can I get you?
15:30Go!
15:36Satch!
15:37Head!
15:38Quick!
15:39March!
15:40They want you!
15:41They want you!
15:42They want you!
15:42They want you!
15:42They want you!
15:43They want you as a memory!
15:43They want you as a memory!
15:45I can't not protect them!
15:46I'm lovely!
15:47I'm in the Navy!
15:49Thanks for offering to take me to the designers.
15:51I didn't need all of you to come,
15:53but all the merrier...
15:55squad you you with the slip-ons slip-ons this is italian left i got off the market
16:05what's your name alan alan what alan carl alan car sir alan car sir car you're dismissed squad
16:15right head match i want to know where the mess decks are i need to meet the designers
16:23he needs to chill out
16:31sophie hello oh nice for me yeah a bit of a pub vibe and what would this pub be called
16:38sophie's tavern
16:39obviously there you go this is going to be a big breakfast bar which is on casters it can be
16:45used
16:45for food prep while it's in situ in the kitchen it can then be wheeled over for a games night
16:49it's multi-functional what's this uckers what do you call me well okay what's what's an ucker so it's a
16:58traditional navy board game this is going to be their own bespoke uckers board oh that's clever
17:04but they still play it now my mum plays it yeah she's a mother-rucker
17:14oh you're right yeah this is my bar top emily's vision for communal dining requires a baffling build
17:23so you know like how the table top will spin out yeah in my head i was thinking is there
17:30a way of
17:31having the table top like there and then the leg goes like here this is very complicated this week
17:38i'm doing my big builds that i've never done before but i'm not here just to repeat what i know
17:42i can do
17:43just gonna have to make it and see let's go for it yep it's 10 past 11. do you reckon
17:49we can get all
17:50of that built before lunch no great yeah yeah hey oh hello little breakfast bar just a little bar
18:00it's all right then ajay's gone for a rough and ready feel so i've decided to use osb as a
18:08primary
18:08texture in my space really taking some of the industrial textures that we see across the navy base
18:13there's a lot of kind of heavy machinery mechanics going around so i've kind of touched on some
18:18industrial elements through some of my texture so bringing that into my mistake hoist the mainsail
18:26it's still wonk oh wonk yeah a naval term duran's had a brain wave how to extend a galley kitchen
18:33put
18:33your food down prepare on there and because it's in line with the worktop it should just read as one
18:40long unit pretty impressive myself come to my island oh it looks amazing so it's going to go in
18:48the center of the like kitchen area bang in the middle um and then we're going to get the two
18:54pendant lights which will then drop over the island as well i mean it looks like an expensive
18:59kitchen island for like 60 quid plus labor that's free you know coffee pint biscuit
19:11johnny's team has been going round in circles to get his design right i have drilled 43 holes of the
19:1963
19:19needed for this one panel here and i've got three panels to do looking good it's going okay i'm never
19:32going to want to drill another hole again when i finish this the scandy style plywood screen will
19:40section off johnny's kitchenette from the living area and provide extra prep space he's echoing this
19:46design in a light feature which he will suspend over a dining unit which doubles up as a ping pong
19:52table for relaxation john is bringing in bean bags and his bargain designer boucle sofa which he's color
20:00matched in his ceiling and complemented in the rich warm teal walls the screen is in place thank you so
20:10much it's taken a long time to do all these circles but it had to be done because it's such
20:16a big part of the
20:16design what's the step emily is also creating different zones with a futuristic feel so i'm going
20:25to just put a just a natural curve along here just to break that space up just subtly spaceship energy
20:36okay so so which which one of these lines do you want me to follow just the mid one spring
20:44has sprung
20:45at leah's oh guys it looks so good it's nice isn't it love it i absolutely love florals and i
20:53love
20:53wallpaper to be honest they're just a combination of years of wallpapers i've loved and wanted to use
20:58actually now we've got the red furniture in and like the woods and now the paper's up yeah i'm really
21:03happy
21:04with it leah hi alan i love this color yeah so this is the new kitchen that's going in and
21:13then the
21:13whole kitchen area will be here with a massive island you're so italian for me i was like no one's
21:22prepping food in there no way now you haven't won standout space no is that on your bucket list i
21:31would
21:31love to win standout space five other amazing designers sadly who really spoil it for me every
21:37week if they weren't involved in the competition you'd have a really good chance
21:43see you later alan oh oh i nearly lost an eye where there's blameless acclaim sorry about that
21:56that's what's going to do in the kitchen still covers to do and then obviously instead the kitchen
22:00and flooring yeah it's the end of day one and things are winding down on the naval base i'm feeling
22:08pretty good at the moment with how the design is going but there's still quite a bit for us to
22:13do
22:14tomorrow stunning yeah it's really really beautiful i'm feeling good it's been a productive day we've
22:23got the partition wall up we've got the main block colors on the wall yeah there's been a lot of
22:28truth
22:28today oh lovely natural textures love it today i've managed to get pretty much all of the kitchen
22:37bit built good progress today i'm happy sophie's tavern will be open for business in 24 hours
22:46oh god
23:00it's day two and the designers have just 12 hours left all right this is me good luck i don't
23:07know if
23:08it's being used yet but i love it so let's see if we can make it work get the chess
23:13pieces out we've got
23:15both two floors to put down in the pantry and in the kitchen wardrobes need made maybe some
23:21artwork to be done with the walls painted and papered glassware there the designers are unleashing
23:29their inner artists hi ajit hey alan how you doing hey why are you painting a pigeon it's a heron
23:38oh yeah
23:38you're right yeah paying homage to the emblem of the base is our in your skill set when you
23:44often pick up a paintbrush and think oh i'm going to draw a heron not quite alan this is why
23:49i had
23:49to resort to an ai generated image that i then projected onto the canvas and drew over the lines
23:54ai they're taking our jobs they are why are you giving this could have been done by a real heron
24:01well listen i'll leave you to that nice to see you're not flapping yeah did you get it
24:05flapping yeah yeah got it i will never replace me because i've got quality jokes like that take that ai
24:14flower power to the people i didn't want to do anything like super cheesy or you know put a big
24:21plane in the room or something so i've thought to make them a helicopter but just outline it with some
24:27water so it really ties in with my wallpaper hi emily hey alan how are you come on you've got
24:36to be
24:36doing some interior design not hula hooping oh no oh oh there you go oh you've cut me out of
24:44a hula
24:45hoop the thing's got that bad listen you must be buzzing a you weren't on the sofa last week
24:52i mean the sofa was like where's emily gone and you won standout space can you believe it so tell
25:00us about your mess deck we've gone sci-fi great you said you didn't want to end up on the
25:08sofa
25:09michelle does not like a theme i am not themy or gimmicky i'm just doing hints of sci-fi because
25:14i
25:15just wanted it to be a cool space for these like sailors to hang out so these are actual hula
25:19hoops
25:19they are hula hoops they're frames for the notice board so can you see here i was going to back
25:24it
25:24with cork and then spray it silver so you can put your pins in and stuff and then it's like
25:29a little
25:29portal my i get it now that's sci-fi isn't it yes most people just have a boring plain old
25:36notice
25:36board we're not like most people are we most people are boring yeah that's true
25:45one big challenge for the designers their fridges have got a little house
25:50is what to do with the four fridges they can just be ugly inside behind closed doors
25:57could you stand in that hall of me some are integrating them into their designs i wanted
26:03to hide the fridges they are ugly and yeah just needed to get rid of them you're a perfect height
26:09for this job honestly you really are i don't think i've ever been told that ever they are
26:16while lovers are out and proud i didn't feel it was necessary to box and hide them away so they're
26:24out
26:24they're there they're fridges what's in your cupboard it's like a game show you've won a fridge
26:32and for the special prize a freezer well done they're safe you're going home with them
26:39don't say i'm going home no no oh no yes no no no johnny's hidden his behind one of his
26:46feature
26:46scandi panels okay so we need to get this up then rob and with the second panel he's doing something
26:53very enlightening so this is connecting the two design languages between my kitchen and this table
26:59here so the lights will come through the holes it's just kind of like an art piece really it kind
27:04of
27:04makes it feel fun it hopefully makes it kind of you know sections it so yeah that's kind of the
27:11motivation behind it i don't know how they go on i think i in my opinion have surpassed my design
27:18vision i feel so chuffed with what i've achieved and i think it's such a huge part of the design
27:22and so integral to the space that actually you know i couldn't imagine the space without it now
27:27there perfect yeah yeah yeah and then i've got the light bulb here duran has also turned her hand to
27:35a
27:35bit of lighting design i have a pendant light made from plaster of paris and recycled card and paper
27:42it's a really really easy way to create something completely unique out of materials that don't cost
27:47very much this is a battery-powered light bulb so you've got a little remote
27:56that's where all my great ideas
27:57i love it it's so cool it's abstract
28:09sophie hello oh you've got the old joanna in come on then do you play anything not confidently i can
28:18i
28:18play the cinder's theme tune oh can you anyone can fall in love that's the easy part
28:27it's badly tuned how much does the piano cost if you haggle for a second hand one yeah 35 quid
28:35no
28:35way 35 quid that's amazing no this is perfect for your pop theme exactly it's a pub piano are you
28:43nearly done
28:47i was being polite am i ever no listen you always do pull it out the back though but i
28:53mean is this
28:53even for you too tight i thought i was doing all right till you came and started playing that music
28:59it's like bohemian rhapsody queen go on i haven't got time i'm afraid i'll leave you to it sophie's
29:07going for a pub vibe in her room with uckers a chesterfield sofa and pub stalls piano if she gets
29:14it right she could win standout space if she gets it wrong it could be last orders
29:23left right left right we haven't got long what have we got two four six eight we like to decorate
29:32yes
29:36it's halfway through day two the chesterfield's going over there i think it looks like a completely
29:42different sofa now that it's in this space i think it looks great and while leah and duran
29:47have kept the original sofas i managed to get this sofa for just a hundred quid others back up
29:53against this screen have scooped up secondhand bargains that sofa i've got looks designer it looks
29:59like it should be thousands of pounds and i paid 450 quid things like that are going to transform it
30:04and take it to another level with seating sorted next in the tables get it out then all right
30:16it's beautiful isn't it i want one of these in my house i've got the room ain't that gorgeous
30:23hi duran hello i don't know what you're doing making a jenga coffee table of course you are
30:31we'll say someone's having their tea and then someone pulls away a jenga strip and they end up with
30:36soup over their crush i did think of that so i'm gluing them together so how do you come up
30:41with
30:41these things well i was inspired by the pineapple coffee table that was made in 1940 that's the
30:48coffee table there and i thought the legs now i get it the legs look like jenga to me they
30:54do yeah
30:54so i was looking for inspiration from that era it's like art deco going into streamline modern so a lot
31:00of
31:01streamline modern yeah that's what you make these words up you make up words and then you make me
31:07feel stupid because i don't know what they are streamline modern yeah it's just a subtle nod to
31:12you know you're having a good time with your mates come on out your room have a laugh play fake
31:17jenga
31:17it's attached to a table but try and have fun exactly while duran recreates a 1930s design classic
31:26i managed to bag some pallets ajit's been up cycling so i went to go visit my mom at her
31:32nursing
31:32home a couple of weeks ago and they're doing a renovation so they've got loads of uh pallets
31:37that were in their car parks so i'm going to make a coffee table so i'm going to give it
31:41a sand
31:42give it varnish stack them on together and then i've got some casters as well they've got a kind
31:46of modular piece of furniture for the mess deck johnny hey alan what's this it's a table basically
31:55it's a dining table with benches that i'm converting into a dining table with table tennis
32:01facilities on it but you can't combine it no one wants a ping pong ball in their ramen
32:07i'm trying to eat back off oh my god so this is coming off this is coming off so i've
32:14stained it
32:15dark and i taped out the table tennis court so we need to just give it a little tug i
32:20think okay
32:20okay this way like that yeah perfect there you are look at me stripping
32:25dad and stop it oh it's going around the bend yeah i think i'm going around the bend and
32:41i can see the effect so it's really cool isn't it are we going to see more of your signature
32:46style this
32:46week yeah i think so i mean my signature style is rooted in mid-century and make it feel expensive
32:52and you know hopefully this design is a true reflection of like my design style well listen
32:57let me know when this is done you grab the knife and fall i'll grab the ping pong absolutely see
33:03you
33:03alan
33:12family i've got a bone to pick with you look what i found in the bin hula hoops yeah not
33:18all art is good
33:19art alan so why are they why'd you put in the bin i was having a moment of madness and
33:24i was like
33:25why would i ruin this beautiful room all right well listen let's try and be positive black ceiling
33:32it works you know i was looking at these strip lights and they were driving me absolutely crazy
33:36but already the black softens the glow and it is sort of sci-fi but it's not like gimmicky or
33:43tacky yeah
33:44because i was worried you know just overdoing it so i just kept it kind of mixed it with like
33:49you
33:49know blacks and softer colors so it didn't look too spaceshipy yeah it looks futuristic that's the
33:56word that's the word but where's the fun for the sailors gonna be thoughts on darts love darts
34:02do you want to play a game yeah love it these beautiful walls are gonna get ruined all the
34:07projector screen i didn't even know it was up there now you're putting me off
34:15one is that good or bad what do you think that board looks wicked i'm dead happy with that
34:22the main purpose of this design brief is to create a space to relax and socialize
34:28this table is their dining area their games table and it's got this really cool function where you can
34:34actually put things underneath i think design-wise what attracted me to this at first was the chrome legs
34:40that really fits really well with streamlined modern design and the glass top was the perfect cherry on
34:52the top so would you have this in your own house personally i wouldn't have this in my house i'm
35:00more
35:00of a cocktail bar guy rather than a football table yeah but we haven't got time for another game though
35:05sadly have we oh oh how convenient yay got the cinema screen up and then the blackout blind behind
35:15just so that it blocks out all the light coming from the patio door so they can actually watch a
35:19film
35:19at any time of the day it doesn't even have to be dark thanks what are we watching
35:24it's right one fat in two with a zombie master one hour to go oh god
35:34banal touches here we come two low tables need to come in the chrome accents just make it pop
35:41i'm a magpie so anything that shines i love it i need the fun because i think i might pass
35:46out in
35:47the panic room durand yeah check come on time's ticking
36:02finished sophie's tavern is open ochre's and pints all round sorry for all my swively confusing designs
36:09i couldn't have done it without you and i'm finished anchors down feet up that is the bad let's go
36:17let's get out of here
36:20the eagles have landed michelle and dame kelly holmes have rendezvous to inspect the mess decks
36:27so kelly how does it feel i mean you're back on a military establishment i know as soon as i
36:33come
36:33into a military barrack i look around and i feel yeah it's partly my home dame kelly holmes is a
36:40british
36:40sporting legend winning two gold medals in the 2004 olympics but she started her career serving 10
36:48years in the british army having been in the military i want to walk into that room and say
36:53yes if i was still serving this would be the room that i'd love to spend my time in our
36:58designers have
36:58been presented with a blank canvas so this is where design can really play a big part it can boost
37:05morale it can make a space that you want to hang out in
37:13the mess deck now has a purpose my biggest achievement is really extending that kitchen
37:17space and providing more functionality and space for more than one person to actually cook their food
37:21so i'm really really proud of what i've done there's a very strong color theme here i feel kind
37:29of it's quite sort of nautical with stripes going yeah all the way around what do you think about the
37:34orange ceiling i've never seen an orange ceiling before it's quite tangoed isn't it i find it very
37:41bright especially with the fluorescents so the kitchen has been pretty well left as it was i mean he's
37:46painted the tiles but he's really inviting you to do most of your cooking and prep out here i like
37:53his introduction of the osb board for the sort of texture i do love a bit of texture i like
37:59the way
38:00that ajit is hidden in the fridges they're sort of out of your mind you don't actually remember that
38:05they're here i find myself imagining how i would use it so i would come in i think right i'm
38:10starving
38:11sit down on the sofa i'm going to cook you some pasta do you want yours with or without chili
38:15love some
38:16chili please all right even though i'm turned away i'm still connected to the room which is
38:21quite nice i do like that i feel that ajit's delivered us here a really solid design quite
38:28roughy toughy doesn't matter if you get it dirty they're not going to be scared of using the space
38:32and that's what you want you want there's many people in here it feels very fit for purpose very
38:38user-friendly
38:45i really hope michelle and kelly will walk in and think wow okay it's it's different but actually
38:52it's a sociable space and i am really proud of what i've achieved and i really love it i would
38:58love to hang out in there
39:03definitely a puppy vibe i'm literally expecting the floor to be sticky i see she's made a very sort
39:09of clever color scheme i kind of love the idea that we're inspired by a traditional navy game
39:15and i can see that she's sort of brought in this very fancy pants wallpaper in the kitchen which i
39:21find
39:21that very odd that wallpaper even though whether people like it or don't should have been brought
39:26into the pub from the wall because that's what you would see in an old pub and this feels like
39:31an
39:31old man's pub doesn't it yeah and yet there's other details in there that actually look quite
39:34interesting so let's go have a look i really like how she sort of added these raw wood shelves in
39:40there but those lovely wooden shelves if she'd even extended those out here then these spaces start
39:45to talk to each other yeah i think it's going to be a space where the sailors living here will
39:50find it quite quirky you go oh wow this is cool right pub you know kind of that vibe but
39:56i don't
39:56think the sailors are actually even allowed to drink in their accommodation so sophie's actually dangling
40:02something that they cannot indulge in yeah if it was designed better based on this look then it could
40:08have worked well i just really thought about you know the age of the people that are using it and
40:20i'm really excited to see what they're going to say but i'd like to probably not hear it via the
40:26sofa
40:34oh wow the black is going across the ceiling and then down the other side i wouldn't normally
40:39go with that but i think with the strip lighting it probably helps right well black is an unusual
40:44colour because you've got that light coming through all that light reflects off the black
40:48so it doesn't make a space necessarily feel really dark i like the archway archway is quite a sort of
40:54soft way to tell me that this is one zone and that's a different zone over here yeah it does
40:59make the room
41:00work more as a whole room i think i like this area quite a lot because it's got what i
41:06would expect mess
41:07to have everyone loves a pool table in the military i do remember doing this a lot um so i
41:13like it yeah
41:14dartboard and then a projector this is interesting this is on wheels do you think that means that this
41:20can all twist away that's clever this is something that emily's kind of done before i don't think she's
41:25ever done anything like this before wow apparently emily used the idea of sci-fi to kind of provide a
41:32bit of
41:32a loose theme for some of her design decisions do you pick that up at all are you feeling that
41:37i
41:37actually don't know that i mean i think that's a good thing i really hope when michelle and kelly walk
41:49into the space they also instantly come in and say that they feel really homely and it feels really
41:54cozy and it feels really warm and inviting and that they want to sit up at the island and sit
42:00and have
42:00a cup of tea together oh gosh i love all the touches i mean there's so much i feel like
42:09i'm
42:09winning because there's so much in here that my eyes are drawn to i love this space see in my
42:15head
42:15my fantasy of joining the navy and being part of one of these kind of crews i imagined sitting around
42:22a big table eating together finally i found a mess room that's actually got that sort of table that i
42:30feel like i could get everyone together that makes me very happy kind of seem like a sneaky yellow
42:35there so i'm quite intrigued to see i don't know if this comes out or not but oh it does
42:40look okay yes
42:42okay that's nice that is brilliant this big bench that's extended the table usage right and i'm assuming
42:51because there's a fantastic projector screen that's how you can turn it around and everyone's engaged
42:56there's no bad seat in this house there's no bad seat it's quite a statement to put the sort of
43:03flowery
43:04wallpaper and that's the only thing for me personally a tiny bit of disconnect i like the wallpaper
43:10i'm just wondering what that is yeah i don't know is it a fish a fish with wings well maybe
43:17maybe it's a player in a helicopter come on lee you did so brilliantly here you could let's ignore
43:22that bit yeah we'll ignore that i really hope that both kelly and michelle walk in there and see the
43:35vision and really appreciate what i've tried to accomplish in there it's really clever if i do say
43:40so myself oh wow this is duran's room she's boxed in all the fridges getting rid of the fridges is
43:50a
43:51bonus isn't the whole room suddenly feels huge i like the fact that it is an open space for everybody
43:59to be very inclusive for everybody do we need the squiggle across the wall and ceiling i veer on the
44:06side of it's really not necessary because there's so much else here that is working quite well
44:12but i think the issue here is that duran has gone down the path of a kind of 30s theme
44:18that she's justified to herself because there was a base here from the 1930s and so we see the art
44:24deco round glass table the lounger chair is that the most appropriate chair to use here because
44:30only one person can sit on that you've got your little play area i'm not sure about glass that's
44:36going to get broken at some stage that causes a hazard and military banks don't like hazards
44:42in many ways this is a bit of a confusing room because there is a lot about it that
44:47is really clever i love boxing in all the refrigerators i love the way that she's laid
44:52out the room with this sort of very clear lounging area very clear seating and dining area
44:58what trips it up is then some of the material she's used we can't use glass it's dangerous
45:10i think that the choices i made the curation of things that i had all worked together
45:15within my style and the vibe of the room so yeah no i'm really happy with them i'm really proud
45:21of
45:21what i've achieved so different wow totally different feel there's a very strong design
45:30statement so i'm seeing that in the furniture i'm seeing it in the colors but somehow i don't feel
45:35comfortable i don't know whether it's because it's not common roomy enough i don't feel like i could
45:41actually just throw myself down on that sofa somehow or maybe it's because i personally can't
45:46bear a bean bag what's your kind of gut feeling i mean i quite like a bean bag and i
45:51think the sailors
45:53will like a bean bag however even though this looks incredible this area here is too luxurious
46:01this is no disrespect to the sailors but it's too fancy they're not going to keep this nice in the
46:08way
46:08that other rooms extended the kitchen actually here we've somehow lost space because although i can be
46:16behind here chopping and prepping i am cut off from the rest of the room even though the screen is
46:23see
46:23through i love this i don't know how long this took i do love this and i love the fact
46:28that he's brought
46:29that into the room and then this huge table which i can see the emphasis of playing it's a great
46:35idea
46:36isn't it but the reality of it is if two of you are playing table tennis it is really annoying
46:41because of that ping pong ping oh sorry that was my ball you know and also if i just want
46:45to eat
46:45my food here and you can't actually play table tennis because there's a wall right behind you table needs
46:51to be here if i pull this table over here because i actually want to have a go at playing
46:55darts the
46:56lighting feature is going to get completely in the way and also now just be illuminating a bit of
47:01carpet so this is in the wrong place it feels so much like if this was a one-bedroom apartment
47:07it would be perfect i think that's always the tricky thing for our designers you know it's not
47:12just creating a space that looks nice it has to work for the function we require of it
47:19while michelle and kelly make their decision oh wow hey i've been busy the recruits get their first look
47:26at their transformed mistakes so you look it's somewhere to cook where's our food
47:36lovely really nice yeah i like it inspiring you to cook a little bit more oh definitely more yeah
47:41a custom hookah's board brilliant
47:47oh you think this might lure you out of your rooms a bit more come and hang out in here
47:51yeah thank you so much for all of this this is actually amazing oh you're very welcome i've had
47:57the most fun with it
48:02back at the studio the designers are about to find out who has won standout space
48:08and who is up for elimination oh hi me heart is well done all of you personally i thought your
48:17wonderful mess decks were foxtrot alpha bravo fab but it's not me you need to impress let's welcome
48:24our design drill sergeants michelle and dame kelly ho
48:30hi everyone hi i've never been on a military base before so i really didn't know what to expect or
48:37what
48:37you would give me with a mistake but it was so wonderful to see all your different ways of
48:42transforming blank spaces into places that gave these young sailors a real sense of belonging
48:48well i have been in the military and i know how dull a lot of the rooms are but these
48:54spaces are
48:54there to create a sense of enjoyment bringing people together fun so which room is being awarded standout
49:02space well there was one space that we both absolutely agreed totally nailed the brief so congratulations
49:13to leah
49:19we've really loved how you centered your design around a place for people to eat and cook together
49:25that's such a powerful way to bring people together so loved it oh thank you so much
49:32yeah i thought it was stunning i thought it was everything that the sailors would love it was wonderful
49:38oh thank you so much also going through is emily well done we really loved how you extended the
49:47kitchen with also the layering of details so congratulations thank you thank you i was blown
49:52away with how much i like black ajit we thought your space was really super user friendly you'd really
50:02understood who you were designing for well done thank you so much the sofa is rather comfortable i did have
50:08a try amazing so that does mean that duran johnny and sophie i would like to see you on the
50:15sofa
50:16congratulations everyone else and we'll see you next week
50:23that's exactly her i've always wanted to hear michelle show my name and i heard it
50:30with leah winning standout space which i'm so happy for her
50:34but her space was the opposite of mine so that makes me very nervous because it makes me feel like
50:39i wasn't understanding the brief i want this so badly i really don't want to leave i think it would
50:45be weird not to feel disappointed in this situation because you put so much into it so yeah i'm curious
50:51to see what michelle has to say i have no idea what michelle could say to me um i was
50:56proud of the
50:57design i created i felt like i nailed the brief so interested to see what she has to say and
51:03you know
51:03hopefully i can learn from it hi hello
51:11you three are all here on the sofa actually for very very similar reasons even though your spaces
51:18probably couldn't have been more different so for me it's an issue of appropriateness
51:24and clinging too tightly to a theme so sophie we were really intrigued with your starting point of the
51:31game that you've done a load of research what i don't understand is where the pub bit came from
51:37because are you aware that these sailors cannot actually drink alcohol in their mess rooms
51:43i obviously didn't want to create a pub it was more about that feeling of of being relaxed and being
51:50at ease and being able to socialize with a lot of people at once i kind of just i don't
51:55know i wanted
51:55to make a cool space and to me that was that was a really cool kind of vibe is this
52:00sort of old
52:01school chart you are not creating theme park rooms here you are creating rooms for real people what's
52:08quite fascinating there johnny yeah your room was beautiful i mean what a delicious room to walk into
52:16with that you know designer sofa the pale blue all the circles and everything i mean we walked in and
52:22were like oh my goodness look but yes what was your inspiration behind this i was inspired by
52:32circles weirdly and this kind of idea of roundness bringing that kind of enveloping feeling and calm
52:38and i found this really cool sofa that was also round and then the the bean bags and on the
52:43way
52:43was like ah this actually works really well with things that i you know enjoy and things that i would
52:49want so all the thinking the concept the idea is loving it the bit where i start to get a
52:54bit nervous
52:55is when it comes a little bit too much about you yeah what you like because i got the sense
53:00that
53:01you found that sofa which was absolutely beautiful and then everything sort of rippled out from that and
53:07you didn't maybe stop enough to go is this sofa the right sofa for a load of 18 to 25
53:13year old trainee
53:13sailors yeah when i first walked on i thought wow i mean it looked fantastic it really did it was
53:20a
53:20lovely design if i had an apartment i would have been oh yeah just come and design that for me
53:24you
53:24know lovely sofa but it was maybe not practical for the type of young people that are going to use
53:29that on a day-to-day basis perfect segue to johann there was so much that worked in your room
53:37the issue
53:38though it was again you had this beautiful 30s theme which then i feel dictated your choice of
53:45furniture and they dictated the round coffee tables but also we have that beautiful glass-topped games
53:54table which neither of us were going to go anywhere near to try and lift the glass up to get
53:59the games
53:59out it's just going to get broken i took some inspiration from products that were you know being
54:05made around that time but i didn't feel that it held me hostage at least i maybe it seemed like
54:11that
54:11but just from a very practical level thinking about the materials they weren't appropriate for the
54:17people that would be using it i was 18 well a month before i was 18 before i joined and
54:22i looked at it
54:23from that point of view if i was in that space would i go in and say oh yeah this
54:28is great
54:28i love it thanks so much watch the tv switch off yeah spit and polish please spit and polish
54:39i think you did what you had to do and you did follow the brief it's the materials that let
54:44you
54:44down on my side so sophie i think you started with what could have been a really strong concept
54:51but allowed yourself to get distracted juran i think your space actually did work everything was
54:59in the right place but your theme meant that some of the pieces were just inappropriate they weren't
55:04right for the people that were using it johnny i think again it's a question of distraction you got
55:11distracted by maybe what you love or that brilliant sofa that you found but it led you off down the
55:17wrong
55:17path but ultimately the biggest lesson is who you are designing for is my room fulfilling its function
55:28in service to the user however you decide to define them and it's got to be practical i don't have
55:37to
55:37like it but it has to work so for that reason the person that will be leaving us this week
55:53is johnny i'm so sorry what a beautiful room but it just wasn't a room for our sailors at all
56:03thank you for all the advice honestly it means a lot thank you guys i think you've got the commission
56:07to redesign kelly's apartment i'll be in touch honestly it was brilliant it looks wonderful and
56:14it's such a shame that it just wasn't practical because you're a really great designer thank you
56:20we all would have moved in we all would have moved into a gorgeous apartment thank you so much
56:25honestly it's been an amazing experience i'm so grateful i'm absolutely good i'm really good i
56:32don't want to go home thank you michelle oh well this experience to me has just meant everything i can
56:39be creative and just proud of that and what i've achieved i'm super sad to see johnny go this week
56:48he's a really talented designer and he did create an absolutely beautiful room but it wasn't the right
56:56room to be a sailor's mystic next time the designers aim for the sky actually thinking i might not like
57:04hi right that might be an issue as they create aspirational studio apartments love love love
57:10for young renters in leeds your image it's very like wednesday yeah but actually you're more like a bank
57:34uh
57:46you
