00:02This week we're in Hay-on-Wye in Wales, where our quarter-finalists have to really sell their designs.
00:09It's shops week.
00:11The town is famous for its literary festival and bookstores,
00:15so I'm making sure they've got the most critically acclaimed titles in stock.
00:22Hey, you can't do that. We only sell high-end literature in here.
00:26Excuse me, this has got a 4.3 rating.
00:30Out of 100.
00:31Out. Out.
00:32All right, all right. Welcome to Interior Design Masters.
00:36What about if I sign a couple?
00:38No.
00:44Four designers remain, hoping for the chance to partner with a major high street retailer
00:50to launch their own homewares collection.
00:54Last time...
00:55Oh, it's a big building.
00:56The designers transformed studio apartments in Leeds.
01:00Floor 20, here I come.
01:02Oh, my God!
01:04Emily won standout space with her sophisticated rental flat.
01:08Your image, it's very like Wednesday.
01:10Yeah.
01:11But actually, you're more like a bank holiday Monday.
01:14Leah got caught in a 70s time walk.
01:16Chicka-chicka-wow-wow!
01:18But it was a jeet who got zoned out.
01:20I've just had the time of my life.
01:22I'll pass on to you.
01:34This is crazy, isn't it?
01:35Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:36It's just very, very quiet.
01:38There's not long left.
01:40We've got to do our best.
01:41And this is the most exciting thing about a competition, right?
01:44You've got to keep getting better and better and better.
01:46And there was four.
01:47I know.
01:49I absolutely hate shopping.
01:51So I need to create something that's going to make me want to go in there and spend my money.
01:56So, yeah, challenge accepted.
01:58Are you an online shopper or a retail shopper?
02:00Neither.
02:01Car boot sale.
02:01Oh, yeah, I love car boot sale.
02:03I need to do a car boot sale, actually.
02:05You've got a lot of stuff.
02:05Same.
02:06Let's go together.
02:06Yeah, shall we?
02:08I managed a retail store for four years.
02:12Hopefully, I've got that advantage to bring to it.
02:15But I do think it is a scary one.
02:17There's so many things to consider.
02:19I'm excited for this.
02:20I can't believe we're doing it.
02:21How is this happening?
02:23I'm hoping that I can show Michelle that I can take on feedback.
02:27No fourth sofa visit for me.
02:28I want to stay off that sofa for the rest of my life.
02:34True story.
02:36Hello.
02:37Hello.
02:39How's this for girl power?
02:41Woo-hoo.
02:42Zig-a-zig-a.
02:45Only one challenge stands between you and the semi.
02:48So with this one, you've got to make Michelle go ka-ching.
02:52This till's broken.
02:54Ka-ching.
02:56Yes, you're heading to Wales.
02:58To transform some shops.
03:05Nestled in a Welsh valley is Hay-on-Wye.
03:08Famous for its bookshops and the annual literary festival,
03:11which attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world.
03:15The town is blessed with lots of independent shops,
03:19including a vintage guitar store, Wye Fret.
03:21It's a guitar lover's paradise.
03:25And a gift shop, Oil & Oak,
03:28which sells products created by local artists and makers.
03:32And as it's shops week,
03:34we're going to give the owners a bog-off deal.
03:36They're getting two designers for the price of one.
03:39And, Emily, as you won Stand Out Space last week,
03:42you get to choose who you'd like to work with first.
03:47Ooh.
03:48Yes.
03:49This one.
03:50That's okay.
03:51Duran.
03:52Yes, please.
03:53So, Leah, you're with Sophie.
03:55Yes.
03:56Michelle, have you got any tips for shops?
03:59Hay-on-Wye is a cultural destination.
04:01People who are lovers of art, music and literature
04:03flock there all year round.
04:05So, those are the people
04:07that you need to get into the mindset of.
04:10And then it's just about getting them in,
04:12keeping them in and making them spend.
04:15Ka-ching!
04:17I've got myself a catchphrase.
04:20In my hand, I have two keys.
04:23So, will one member from each team
04:25come and take their pick?
04:27Will it be guitar?
04:30Or gift?
04:32Yeah, what's a gift?
04:36Let me have a thing.
04:38Hurry up, please.
04:39Come and pick.
04:41Gift or guitar?
04:43Let's find out.
04:44Only reveal them once you go back to your seat.
04:47Emily, is it the guitar shop or the gift shop?
04:51Why fret?
04:52Guitar shop, of course.
04:54Amazing.
04:55So, that means Leah, Sophie,
04:57you've got Oil & Oak, the gift shop.
05:00The guest judge this week is meticulous
05:03when it comes to retail detail.
05:05It's shop's expert, Ross Bailey.
05:08Woo!
05:09So, yeah.
05:10Terrifying, though.
05:11Yeah.
05:12One shop duo will be awarded standout space.
05:16The other pair will face the sofa.
05:18You've got two days and a budget of £4,000.
05:22Good luck, and we'll see you in Wales.
05:25Good luck.
05:28Ka-ching.
05:29One of the hardest challenges in Shops Week
05:32is that the shop owners, for them,
05:34it is their baby.
05:35It is their everything,
05:36and they often have a very specific list
05:38of things that they think they need.
05:41It's the designer's job
05:42to give them creative, wonderful ways
05:44to make it exciting and a bit different.
05:51Oh, my God.
05:52Oh, the windows are massive.
05:53The designers head straight to Hay-on-Wye
05:56to meet their clients.
05:58Hey, Chris.
05:58How are you?
05:59How are you guys?
06:00You OK?
06:00Emily and Duran are meeting Chris,
06:03owner of the Vintage Guitar Shop.
06:05Welcome to Y-Frat.
06:07Thanks for having us.
06:07This is my dream.
06:08It's beautiful.
06:09You've got such an amazing collection of guitars.
06:11They've done amazing things, some of these guitars.
06:14For example, we had Sting's bass in here once upon a time.
06:16I just love that they've seen things and gone places
06:19and, you know, played to crowds bigger than I'll ever play, probably.
06:22But, yeah, amazing.
06:23Some of these things have got, like, awesome history.
06:26These are all my electrics.
06:28They range anywhere from, like, sort of 1,000 up to...
06:31The most expensive one we have at the minute is 14,000.
06:35So, at the moment, the walls are white
06:37and you've got all these beautiful coloured guitars.
06:39So, what do you want for the walls?
06:41I don't know.
06:41The green's always kind of worked to make it pop.
06:43Yeah.
06:44And with the space that we have now,
06:46to be able to do little intimate gigs in here,
06:49I've always wanted to do that.
06:51So, you need a stage?
06:52That'd be amazing if we could do something like that.
06:54And we've got an old changing room in there
06:56that I'd like to possibly turn into a sound booth.
06:59OK.
06:59This is where I do, like, all of my guitar setups, little repairs.
07:03And it's nice because I can keep an eye on everything.
07:05Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:06How come you don't have any guitars in the window?
07:08It's more just because of the sunlight and for security reasons.
07:11OK.
07:11A lot of people always comment that my window display should be more vibrant or...
07:16You need to stand out.
07:17Yeah, definitely.
07:18So, no pressure then.
07:18Yeah, I was just going to say there's no pressure.
07:23It's so nice to just see how passionate he is about what he does.
07:26We have really listened to what he needs the space to do.
07:30So, hopefully, he'll be really happy with what we've done.
07:33It is very important that we showcase his collection of guitars
07:37and also make his customers want to come in and play them
07:40and hopefully buy them.
07:41And I wouldn't want to do it with anyone else apart from Duran.
07:46Don't make me cry.
07:48Leah and Sophie's client is Abby.
07:50Hi!
07:51Hi, nice to meet you.
07:52Artist and owner of gift shop Oil & Oak.
07:56So, we've got, like, 40 different local makers in here.
08:00So, that's why it's quite eclectic and it looks quite mad.
08:02But that's kind of the whole point.
08:04Everything's kind of mismatched, so I'd really love some uniformity.
08:09What's your kind of best-selling items, I guess?
08:11So, best-selling items would be Leslie's wool.
08:15Do you have a fitting room?
08:17We've got our toilet.
08:18So, there's a mirror upstairs on our toilet door
08:21and they can go in and change in there, which is not ideal at all.
08:25OK. So, a fitting room would be helpful, then?
08:27A fitting room would be helpful, yeah.
08:28OK.
08:29Yeah.
08:29And also, we sell lots of cards.
08:31They sell really, really well.
08:32All our card spinners are second-hand, so they all squeak, which is great.
08:37They've all got paint peeling off and stuff like that, which is, yeah.
08:40So, anything that would, yeah, up the appearance of those would be great.
08:44I can't wait.
08:45Should we get to work?
08:46I can't wait to get started, yeah.
08:48There is literally hundreds and hundreds of products in the store,
08:52but then it's really exciting because you can really play around
08:55with, like, creative ways to display the merchandise that she has.
08:59So, hopefully, we can improve that for her.
09:01It is a bit overwhelming.
09:03You kind of walk in, your eye doesn't know where to go.
09:05So, giving her that sort of separation
09:07and making it easy to shop, I think, is key.
09:14How beautiful is it here?
09:15It's gorgeous, isn't it?
09:17It's so quaint.
09:19After a week of planning, the designers are back and raring to go.
09:23Here we are.
09:24Ready to go, partner?
09:25Yes.
09:26They have got just two days.
09:27This one's so beautiful.
09:30I'm just going to run away with it.
09:31To transform their spaces into somewhere fabulous and functional.
09:36Look at this lovely town, full of books.
09:38Luckily, help is on hand.
09:40Good, good, good.
09:43Each team has two carpenters and two decorators.
09:47How are you, guys?
09:48Still can't move around the quarterfinal.
09:50I know!
09:50We can't live in the quarterfinal.
09:54Oi!
09:54Joking, I'm joking.
09:56So, before, the shop was really cluttered,
09:59so there's a lot of stuff, yet I didn't really know where to go.
10:01So, our aim is to turn it into a more curated, shoppable space
10:05with some really breathtaking standout moments
10:08and focus on the customer journey.
10:11The back wall's here.
10:13We're going to build out some card and print displays.
10:17And then we've got some bespoke builds in the middle,
10:19some really gorgeous long tables with some real wood.
10:22We've got some stripy wallpaper.
10:24It's going to go all the way up the stairs and onto the landing.
10:26And there's going to be a bespoke ceramics display over there as well.
10:30We actually have, like, hundreds of products to bring back up,
10:33which is quite stressful.
10:35So, we really actually need most of the painting
10:38and builds done in one day,
10:40because it needs to be dry for us
10:43to then merch the entire shop on the last day.
10:46It's a lot for one day.
10:48I know.
10:48Just give us a whoop, whoop.
10:50Whoop, whoop, whoop.
10:56To showcase the huge selection of stock,
11:00both Sophie and Leah have designed extensive merchandising displays,
11:04wall-mounted and freestanding,
11:07cocooned in a nature-inspired colour palette of terracotta,
11:10pale pistachio and cream.
11:13For the right-hand side,
11:14Sophie's chosen statement wallpaper to display artwork
11:18and lead customers upstairs to a luxurious new fitting room.
11:23Leah's left-hand side includes a spacious upgraded till area,
11:27which will feature the shop's new branding
11:29and for the enormous windows,
11:32raw wood plimps and displays that bring the outside in.
11:37This is the tree that's going to go in the window,
11:41which has just been made out of postal cardboard tubes.
11:47Lots of craft paper.
11:49I'm going to use it to display products from...
11:52And then add a little nod to Hay on Wye
11:54by making the leaves out of books.
11:58My inspiration was the beautiful area that we're in
12:01and, like, what that kind of looked like
12:03and how I could incorporate that into the store.
12:06And shop windows are so, so important
12:09to get customers into the shop.
12:11Phil, can I borrow you there?
12:13Yeah.
12:13Could you just hold that like that?
12:16That's great. Thank you.
12:18This isn't really my skill set, but...
12:20No?
12:21Balancing trees, no.
12:23Building a tree in the quarterfinal,
12:26probably up there would be quite risky,
12:29but if I can pull it off,
12:33I think it's going to look really good.
12:35Lovely.
12:37Yeah.
12:39Careful of the nails hanging out.
12:41Yeah, I've seen them.
12:44Down the street,
12:45Emily also has big plans for a window that speaks volumes.
12:50I just thought a guitar shop needs to kind of have a guitar in the window.
12:54And then I'm going to band it with LED lighting
12:56just to give it that kind of Nashville guitar shop aesthetic.
13:00Visual merchandise is super important for the customer.
13:03So we wanted to have something that had, like, a high impact
13:05that made you think,
13:06wow, that's amazing, what's that, let's go inside.
13:09It looks good if I don't say so myself.
13:12Once I've got the wires on there and things,
13:13I think it'll be very eye-catching.
13:15Yeah.
13:15Wow, wow, wow, wow.
13:17LAUGHTER
13:20Emily's illuminated papier-mâché masterpiece
13:23will create an attention-grabbing window display.
13:26Atmospheric dark green walls with a black ceiling and accents
13:30will give the space a recording studio feel,
13:33along with a relaxed lounge area in the centre.
13:36On the left side,
13:38Emily is displaying electric guitars on the walls
13:40and on custom-made plimps.
13:42And the current changing room will be repurposed into a sound booth.
13:47On the right, Duran's removing a stud wall
13:50to open up a refurbished till and repair zone.
13:54And along the right side will be acoustic guitars
13:56and a show-stopping structure with a show-starting aim.
14:02So one of the things that the client really wanted
14:05was to have gigs here once a month.
14:08So creating a stage that doubles up
14:11as something for performance nights
14:13and also to house some of the acoustic guitars
14:15because this side of the wall is mainly acoustic.
14:18I'm very excited because I think the stage
14:20will really transform the feel of the shop.
14:22We want this to be a destination location
14:24and we want to make it special
14:25and more reasons to come down to the store.
14:29Yeah, a lot to achieve with one build,
14:31but I think it's manageable
14:32and I think it'll be very impactful as well.
14:35OK, this is the bit I want to see.
14:37Yeah.
14:37Oh, that's so satisfying!
14:40Oh, it looks so good!
14:42I've never made a stage before.
14:44As a dancer, I'm always on a stage,
14:46so it's kind of nice to make my own one.
14:52Down the street...
14:54So what's the plan with this unit?
14:56Sophie's also created a space
14:57for the gift shop's ceramics to show off.
15:00There's going to be cabinetry in the bottom for storage.
15:03Then the top is literally going to be a display
15:06for the plates, the bowls, the mugs, the plant parts.
15:10I want it to look quite sleek and modern
15:11rather than a traditional Welsh dresser,
15:13which is quite chunky.
15:15Abby, the shop owner, has quite a lot of ceramics
15:18and that'll really help to sort of spotlight
15:20the things that she's selling.
15:32I'm thrilled to be here in Hay-on-Wye
15:35and as it's famous for literature,
15:37I told the wardrobe department
15:38to make me look really bookwormish.
15:42I think they've taken it a tad too far.
15:45Right, well, I'm off to meet the designers
15:47and that's Sparrow's up there licking its lips.
15:52This is so humiliating.
16:00Hi, Emily.
16:01Hey, Alan, how are you?
16:02Good.
16:03Now, remind me, are you doing the gift shop
16:06or the guitar shop?
16:07I mean, there'd be problems
16:09if I was doing the gift shop.
16:10I was going to say, something's gone very wrong.
16:13How big is this guitar?
16:16Three metres.
16:17Do you know what you need?
16:18A massive G-string.
16:20Hey, I can have a look through my washing basket.
16:24So, listen, the guitars in your guitar shop,
16:26they're expensive, aren't they?
16:27They're super expensive
16:29and the client doesn't want them in the window.
16:31Do you need to put something in the window
16:32to get them in?
16:33You do.
16:34So, this is where this came from.
16:36A massive guitar.
16:38Wow.
16:38And then what are these?
16:40Oh, that one's just glued down.
16:41Oh, sorry.
16:43They look familiar.
16:44Where have I seen these before?
16:46Maybe on your radiator.
16:48Oh, is this what you turn
16:50when you want to go hot and cold?
16:52Yeah, yeah, but we're turning it to do the volume
16:53and then the reverb and stuff.
16:55So, do you want to glue one down?
16:56Yes, please.
16:57Which one?
16:58We'll let any knob will do.
17:01Just careful, because it's super hot.
17:03Okay, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow.
17:06Is that enough?
17:07Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:07Right, get it in there.
17:08Okay, lovely.
17:09And is there two windows?
17:11No, the other window's Duran's
17:12and she's doing an amp stack
17:14and we're doing yellow wires
17:16to connect from my guitar
17:17so it goes over
17:18so it looks like they're talking to one another.
17:21With Michelle, it's all about the client.
17:23Have you done everything the client wants?
17:26We're trying our best to, like, tick that box.
17:29Oh, that's great.
17:31I'll just pluck off now
17:32and leave you to it.
17:35In the guitar shop,
17:37Emily has taken go big
17:39or go home literally
17:40but with no expensive stock
17:42allowed in the front of the shop,
17:44she's resorted to putting
17:45a slightly surreal giant paper mache guitar
17:48in the window instead.
17:50Will it attract potential rockers
17:52or will she just look off her rocker?
17:58Over in Oil & Oak,
17:59Leah's also been down the DIY shop
18:01for her window display.
18:03So the branches of the tree
18:05are made with these
18:09pipe tubing,
18:11which is actually, I think,
18:12plumbing tubing,
18:13and then you cut down
18:15a little hole in the noodles
18:17and slide these in
18:19and they'll be sticking out from the tree
18:22and then we'll hang all the book leaves.
18:24Feels quite artsy for me,
18:26but hopefully I can pull it off
18:29and it doesn't look like something
18:30that kindergarten kids made.
18:33In Why Fret?
18:34Have you ever seen anyone
18:36just take so many risks
18:37with paint?
18:39It's the always artsy Duran.
18:41I always freehand.
18:43It gives more of that organic feel
18:45because you're not forcing it,
18:47you're just kind of trusting your intuition,
18:48which is what I love.
18:51Creating movement
18:52that takes the eye around the room,
18:54encourages you to walk through the space,
18:55that's what I'm intending on doing
18:57with that mural on the stage floor.
18:59It's going to look good.
19:06It's halfway through the first day.
19:08Oh, it's like it grew there, mate.
19:11Sophie's bespoke ceramics display
19:13is bursting into life.
19:15Yay!
19:16That looks wicked!
19:18Yes!
19:20Duran's shop has got its name up in lights.
19:23It looks so good!
19:25It looks good, right?
19:26It's just made that whole wall pop now.
19:27Yeah.
19:28It looks beautiful.
19:28Leah's creation is branching out.
19:31The tree is growing at a rapid rate.
19:34Once we've got all of the tree covered,
19:36I'm going to make the leaves out of book pages,
19:39which would just be a really nice nod to Hay-On-Y.
19:42And in the guitar shop...
19:43Three, two, one.
19:45The demolition squad are in.
19:49Well, Duran and Emily...
19:51Ah!
19:57I don't think me and Emily's calling is taking down walls,
20:00to be honest.
20:01Oh!
20:03Oh!
20:04You all right?
20:08Yeah, I'm fine!
20:11I'm so happy that's come down.
20:12It looks amazing.
20:13It's so nice to have the flow that runs continuously around the whole store.
20:16And the till repairs counter is so much more open now.
20:21Leah's till area is also getting a facelift.
20:24So my plan is to clad the current till in just ply to give it a soft finish.
20:30At the moment, it's got wooden slats,
20:32which is not going to work with what I want to add to it.
20:35So now we've got the front panel on.
20:38Yes.
20:38Now you're going to draw the curve and then add the logo.
20:42And then the strip lighting will go behind,
20:44so it'll be backlit as well.
20:45Nice.
20:46So what I need to do is draw you a lovely curve so you can cut it.
20:50Yes, you do.
20:52The till area is really important in a shop.
20:54Ultimately, it's where you're probably going to meet the shop owner as well
20:56and have interactions with the customers.
20:58And I really hope Abby likes it.
21:02Something like that.
21:03Not super fussy.
21:06Curved lines are a feature in both teams' designs
21:10and Duran's at it again with the paintbrush.
21:13We've got loads of black accents,
21:14so I think bringing it in in these subtle ways
21:19just helps to bring the whole space together as a whole.
21:23Duran!
21:25Hello.
21:25Hello, can I sit down?
21:27No.
21:28Great.
21:29Bye!
21:31You might get it on your trousers.
21:33Is it all?
21:34Well, some of it's drying.
21:36Oh, okay.
21:36Well, I think it's safer down here.
21:38Oh, my God.
21:39It's really coming together.
21:40I love it.
21:41I think it's really moody and sexy.
21:44Yeah.
21:45It is.
21:45It is sexy.
21:46It is.
21:46Do you find guitars sexy?
21:48I mean, kind of.
21:49They've got all the curves.
21:50Curves in all the right places.
21:53Exactly.
21:53Oh.
21:53I feel like my stage.
21:55Oh, my...
21:55Is this going to be a stage?
21:57Look, what's the shape?
21:58Remind you of.
21:59A lady.
22:00No, a guitar.
22:02A guitar.
22:02Yeah.
22:04So, if you don't go home this week, you're through to the semi-final.
22:09I don't even know how to process that.
22:11Yeah, it would just mean everything.
22:13I'm probably going to end up on the sofa again, aren't I?
22:15Oh, please.
22:16As if...
22:17Can I go on the stage?
22:18Yeah.
22:19What are you going to do up there?
22:20Do you remember some shway?
22:22Let's do some shway in hay.
22:24Right.
22:25Oh, no, that's not shway.
22:26Do this one.
22:27It's called atomic drop.
22:29Tilt, forwards, and then drop back.
22:31There we go.
22:32Forwards.
22:34Oh, my God.
22:36Don't hurt yourself.
22:37Right.
22:38Well done.
22:39Don't.
22:40I had a taco at lunch, and I've just heard it go down.
22:42It's gone down to the basement, if you know what I'm saying.
22:45Oh, no.
22:50With the first day nearing its end...
22:52Oh, it looks so nice.
22:54Both shock fronts are taking shape, which is a good sign.
22:59Oh, they love it, Doran.
23:01They love it.
23:03But inside...
23:04This looks wicked.
23:05Oh, my God, I love it.
23:07There's been a slight miscalculation.
23:09No, but that's nearly three rolls already.
23:12You're joking.
23:13And then we've got probably at least four there.
23:16I'm going to see if we can ring the company and get them to send us something out.
23:19And Sophie isn't the only designer caught short.
23:22Stephen, I love it.
23:23It looks great.
23:24I don't think we've got enough of it, though.
23:26Got that left.
23:28This is the issue that I always have, because I don't want to buy too much paint and waste it
23:33all.
23:33And sometimes it works, and then sometimes it doesn't.
23:36The way it's covered, it might need a third.
23:41We just have to get some more mixed up.
23:46It's the end of day one.
23:48Feeling good.
23:50Really happy with the colours, the papers, everything we've chosen.
23:55Slightly concerned about the taste.
23:57Well done.
23:58Well done.
23:59Hands up.
23:59Nice girl.
24:00We were hoping to get all the carpentry and painting done today.
24:04Obviously, that's never, ever going to happen.
24:06There is just so much to do.
24:08So, yeah, we've got to be really, really on it tomorrow.
24:12It's a really good day.
24:13It's a really good day.
24:14I mean, the transformation already is nuts, isn't it?
24:19We've pretty much done a bit more than we expect to do, which is amazing.
24:24We're not playing around now.
24:26This is for a spot in the semi-final.
24:27We're working as hard as we possibly can.
24:30Tomorrow is just getting all of those big things completed, so we've got loads of time to focus on the
24:35details.
24:48The designers have just 12 hours to complete their transformations.
24:53Morning!
24:55Morning!
24:55Morning, morning.
24:56Morning.
24:57Everyone sleeps well?
24:58Yeah, very much.
24:59We've got two thumbs up from here this morning.
25:01Oh, wait, can I get that second whoop?
25:03Whoop, whoop.
25:04Yes!
25:09And in why fret, with the client's vision of a stage complete,
25:15Emily's on to the next request.
25:17These are my acoustic panels for the sound booth.
25:20It is these little touches that elevate the space.
25:23A lot of my research this week was spent looking at acoustic treatments
25:28and how to make you hear the instruments to their best quality,
25:30so I'm going to put a couple of sound panels in that changing room.
25:35I guess I've shown my artistry in a way that's, like, functional and suited to the space.
25:43At the gift shop, there's a bit more repurposing going on.
25:47The landing, it's currently used as a gallery space, which I love,
25:51but I'm going to put in a very, very simple fitting room,
25:54and I have a super cool idea for a custom chandelier.
25:59So, it's going to be a chandelier.
26:02Ah!
26:04It currently looks like the work of a madman,
26:06but hopefully when it's in situ and it's lit, it's going to look really cool.
26:10It'll look amazing.
26:12I hope so.
26:13Have you done any retail work?
26:15So, I used to run my own pop-up shops.
26:18Oh, wow!
26:19This is right up your street!
26:21It is, but it is different,
26:23because, um...
26:25I didn't really do gifts.
26:27You wanted the guitar shop.
26:29I did want the guitar shop.
26:29You're rock and roll!
26:31Round up the...
26:32Bow!
26:34That's what you want.
26:35You don't want to be...
26:36You don't want to be with fridge magnets and mugs.
26:38No, do you know what?
26:39As soon as I actually started working on this,
26:41I was really glad,
26:43because this is really challenging.
26:45There's a lot of stuff,
26:46but I've really enjoyed it.
26:48With Michelle, she says as well,
26:50sometimes it's giving the client what they don't know they need.
26:53We have managed to give her things that she didn't specifically ask for.
26:56The dressing room as well that I'm adding.
26:58At the minute, the customers get changed in the toilet.
27:00No!
27:01And what have you got in the toilet-stroke changing room?
27:05Is that a bog brush hanging from a chandelier?
27:08Yeah!
27:09Good luck, love.
27:11See you in a bit.
27:12Bye!
27:15Inside, the client isn't the only one getting something unexpected.
27:23I'm trying not to have any swear words on the front.
27:27I may have selected Fifty Shades of Grey for the pages,
27:31which was a genuine accident.
27:36Hello!
27:38Hello!
27:39I've taken some inspiration from you this week.
27:42Paper.
27:43Paper.
27:43Not the mashie, but I've papered.
27:46That's really nice.
27:47Are you going to put stuff on there?
27:48So I'm going to put cards and prints on it hanging.
27:51Nothing too heavy.
27:53Yeah, yeah.
27:53But I wanted to kind of give it a bit more texture
27:55by making the leaves out of book pages.
27:58Got you.
27:58And it used to be a book shop, so it's quite a nice little knowledge to its history.
28:03Yeah, yeah, yeah.
28:03What is this book that you've used?
28:06Well...
28:07We've gone for a slightly erotic novel for the leaves.
28:10This is something my mum would read.
28:15Where did you get the raunchy book from?
28:17Charity shop.
28:18I just went in and I picked the thickest books, Emily.
28:21I wasn't looking...
28:22Sounds like a good read, though.
28:22It's not from my collection.
28:23I promise.
28:24Yeah.
28:25Sex, bomb, sex, bomb.
28:27Well, you're my sex bomb.
28:29You can give it to me when I need to come along.
28:33Beautiful.
28:33Sex, bomb, sex, bomb.
28:35Wee-oo!
28:36Great!
28:37I love it.
28:38Let's push on tight now.
28:39Yep.
28:39We got this?
28:40We've got this.
28:40Yeah.
28:41Sick.
28:44Oli!
28:45I've got something for you.
28:47Whee!
28:50Just what I needed.
28:51So Ollie's got his paint now and he's getting the third coat on.
28:55Hopefully it's going to dry quickly,
28:57but you just never know with these things, do you?
29:00It's pushing us back, but I'm not going to fret about it right now.
29:07And with Sophie's wallpaper crisis also averted...
29:11Upstairs is looking good, I just need to put my curtains up.
29:14..she can focus on her favourite pastime.
29:17This is absolutely not my happy place.
29:20Give me a paintbrush.
29:22Making curtains for my fitting room.
29:26Literally just going to be a curtain pole
29:27with some beautiful curtains hanging and put a mirror in there.
29:31I think it'll help increase sales as well
29:33because people are going to feel more special.
29:36Hello, Soph. Hey. How's it going? Good.
29:39Oh, this fabric's gorgeous. Yeah, it's nice, isn't it?
29:42We've got one finished curtain.
29:43Ooh, Sophie the seamstress.
29:47I mean, it's not perfect, but it's not terrible either.
29:50It'll be fine.
29:50It looks great. It'll be fine.
29:52No-one in that changing room is going to be assessing the stitching.
29:55How you getting on? Good. The tree's pretty much done.
29:58Yes!
29:58And just hanging on the leaves.
30:01Amazing.
30:02But same bit longer because there's some pages that are too raunchy to use.
30:07Who knows? Some people might love it.
30:10While Sophie is preparing to hang curtains...
30:13So, yeah, we basically want three of them like that.
30:18Emily has ambitious hanging plans of her own.
30:20I'm going to have a feature guitar wall with display plaques that explain the history and the price point of
30:27the guitars.
30:28The client wanted a guitar of the week, but instead I wanted three guitars.
30:32I just wanted the eye to break up a little bit rather than just a long wall of electric guitars.
30:37Three, two, one.
30:39Oh!
30:40It's nice.
30:44Back in the gift shop...
30:46This is your card display.
30:48Because we're going to sit this on the skirting now, I'm going to put a shelf right at the bottom.
30:51Oh, nice. We'll get an extra one.
30:53And then you'll have a gap at the top for whatever you want to do it above it.
30:56Signage coming.
30:57Signage.
30:58Yeah, just in case people didn't know what they were.
31:01A new and improved merch display for one of the store's biggest sellers.
31:06So, the issue of the cards at the moment is they're on these, like, spinny, old-school card, kind of...
31:14spherical things? I don't know what you call them.
31:15But they're squeaky, they're old, they're clunky.
31:19But I really want people to see all of the line-up in one view.
31:22So, we're going to custom build panels on the wall which will allow all of the cards and prints to
31:26be displayed.
31:30That's good.
31:33I haven't had to do this for a very long time when I used to work in retail.
31:37It's quite therapeutic.
31:39But it's also giving me PTSD because I don't want to go back there.
31:44Duran is also writing some merchandising roles.
31:48Previously, all of these accessories, guitar strings, were just in a glass cabinet.
31:52So, they weren't really accessible.
31:54You couldn't really see what they were.
31:56And that was something that the client said that, you know, really wanted us to find a solution for.
32:00So, I think making the use of this slat wall and just having the colours of these really beautiful packaging
32:05kind of pop out against the green, I think it looks really good.
32:08I used to work as a visual merchandiser.
32:11I just really loved how, by arranging the products in a certain way and just taking a bit of extra
32:17care with just placement, how much it transforms the customer journey.
32:20It's nice to celebrate your stock and your product.
32:24So, I love it.
32:27Hello, ladies.
32:29Hello.
32:29Hi, Alan.
32:30What's this lovely curve here?
32:32So, we've added in like a curve feature to the till just for a bit more kind of texture and
32:37also there's LED lighting behind it.
32:40And I'm just about to add on the logo that we've created.
32:43Do you want to give us a hand?
32:44Yeah.
32:45Yeah.
32:45Oh, my God.
32:46I'd love to do this.
32:47Well, why don't I place it?
32:49Yeah.
32:49And then you can...
32:50You can rub it.
32:52OK.
32:54Not an offer like that in a long time.
32:58So, start from the middle.
32:59This is...
33:00OK, this is going to come off.
33:01OK, OK.
33:02And then we're just going to push out all the air bubbles.
33:04Look at this.
33:05Me and Soph created this for Abby and we've done her new signage as well.
33:11So, this is all a surprise to her.
33:13Oh.
33:13Which I hope she really likes.
33:16How's this rubbing?
33:17All right?
33:17Yeah, that looks good.
33:19So, we can maybe check if it's...
33:21Yeah.
33:22Moment of truth.
33:24Me heart's in me mouth.
33:26You see, you've got so much patience.
33:28I just yanked that on.
33:31That's why I gave you the rubbing texture.
33:33Yeah, yeah.
33:35Perfect.
33:36That, Sophie.
33:38Have a look.
33:39Look at this.
33:40Yay, well done!
33:41And we both did this.
33:43Are we ready?
33:44Yeah.
33:45I declare oil and oak.
33:48Open!
33:50Yay!
33:52There was a delay, though.
33:53There was a delay.
33:55Oh, that's lovely.
33:57Right, come on.
33:58I want to see gifts on the shelves.
34:00See you in a bit.
34:00See you in a bit.
34:03It's halfway through day two.
34:06I think it looks wicked, this counter.
34:08Yeah.
34:08It looks professional, which is what we want.
34:10Does that look good?
34:12Yeah.
34:12I think so.
34:16When are we getting doors on this?
34:17I haven't got doors cut for that yet.
34:20OK.
34:22So we do need doors.
34:23We need doors on that.
34:25Why did we think we could do this in two days?
34:27This is crazy.
34:29That needs doors.
34:30OK.
34:30100%.
34:31Yeah.
34:31I think we've been massively ambitious.
34:34At the moment, obviously, we've got no stock out,
34:36which is concerning considering we have half a day left.
34:41So, yeah.
34:42Nervous.
34:45We are really pushing time here, but wouldn't be a challenge if you weren't pushing on time, would it?
34:54With online shopping so dominant, creating a memorable experience on the high street is key.
35:01Just making the centerpiece for when you walk in the store.
35:05We wanted, like, almost a show-stopping moment so that people would kind of walk in and be like,
35:10wow, this shop's amazing, I must stay and explore all of it.
35:13And you have to really think these days, is it good for social media?
35:16So we thought by giving her these displays will allow her to take lots of pictures and use them on
35:21socials.
35:22So I'm really hoping we can kind of bring that side to the shop that maybe Abby doesn't have experience
35:26in.
35:30Meanwhile...
35:33Now, this is taking the mick. Does that make no sense?
35:37Duran and Emily also have big plans to enhance the customer's experience.
35:42No.
35:43We've got two additional chairs that we found online that were second-hand
35:47that we're adding as an addition to the Chesterfield to sort of complement it
35:51and to give two separate seats for the client's customers
35:55to, like, try out guitars, hang out, chat, like, prices,
35:58and just somewhere that feels a bit more welcoming when you walk in the shop.
36:01We want to make it a real focal point for the store
36:04because when you walk in, that is one of the main things that you see.
36:07So I think it's quite an important and integral part of the shop design.
36:11Right, why is there, like, not matching holes?
36:13I told you, it's really confusing.
36:16Sort of go the opposite way that you would originally do it, and that's how you build it.
36:19Oh, great. That's really helpful.
36:21So go against your intuition.
36:25There's not even a picture on it!
36:27You winded me up!
36:29Of all the things that I can do, I can't put together a chair, apparently.
36:33Steve, can you give me a hand, please?
36:36OK. Come on, then. What have you got?
36:40Just hung my curtains.
36:42Yes!
36:44Sophie's adding the finishing touches to a new and improved landing.
36:48They look really nice, especially against the wallpaper.
36:57Is that all right?
36:59It doesn't make any sense.
37:01Back in flat pack land...
37:02Did you go against your intuition?
37:04You called Steve.
37:05I went against every intuition and still didn't figure it out.
37:08And my intuition also didn't help.
37:11So now we're just...
37:13Chancing it.
37:15Basically.
37:16You've got a couple of short ones.
37:17Yeah.
37:18That took me, like, five minutes to do.
37:20Oh, yeah. All right, Emily.
37:24My hero.
37:29With just three hours to go...
37:31Guitar is strung.
37:33Let's get it in the window.
37:34It's the moment we've all been waiting for.
37:36That's it. There you go.
37:37The windows get the wow factor.
37:40It's gorgeous.
37:41It looks sophisticated.
37:43It's paper mache, but it doesn't look like craft.
37:47I think it's, like, just fits the vibe of the shop perfectly.
37:51Stop, stop, stop.
37:55That looks pretty good.
37:57It's a pretty good tree.
38:00I am so happy with it.
38:03Leah.
38:05Hey, Alan.
38:05You've got little leaves here.
38:08Whoa, whoa, whoa.
38:09Wait a minute.
38:10She's a bit raunchy, the old pages.
38:12Have you cut up Amanda Holden's biography?
38:16Last week it's pampas grass and now it's this.
38:18Why don't you just stick a red bulb in there and a pole?
38:22Whoo!
38:27The clock is ticking.
38:29Should we get the guitars off?
38:30And all those gifts and guitars are not going to jump on the shelves themselves.
38:35We need to be at ten for merchandising.
38:36I don't feel like we are, but we just need to.
38:38So it's just chaos.
38:39We're just starting to bring stuff out now because it needs to happen.
38:42Could you get me a guitar, please?
38:45Just bring what you have that isn't massive and heavy.
38:48While the shops race towards the finish line...
38:50There's a lot to do.
38:51And it is important that this is not my forte.
38:56Both teams are tight on time to merchandise.
39:00This is, like, not my world at all.
39:01Come on, darling. Let's go.
39:03What do you want me to do? Talk to me.
39:04Phil, put that there, put that there.
39:06I honestly don't... I can't even direct you because I just don't know.
39:10Have a breather.
39:11Go on, have a minute.
39:14Right, I'm going back in.
39:19Got a mannequin. Where do you want the mannequin?
39:21Does she have legs?
39:22Oh, no, she's got no legs.
39:24I found her in the pub like this.
39:26It's fantastic. There you go.
39:27Right, okay. You haven't got long now.
39:31Yeah, that's perfect.
39:34Right.
39:41Bon voyage.
39:44I would like to bon voyage right now.
39:46Would you like a super slinky or a mamma slinky coming up, babe?
39:50There you go. Treat yourself.
39:51Do you mind putting them all back, thanks?
39:53Yeah, you used to be fun.
39:56We've made a big decision to take the flowers down.
40:00We've created loads of beautiful moments in the shop.
40:03And we think this was just one too much that's actually not needed.
40:06And the branch itself is the statement.
40:12Cheers!
40:13Well done, guys.
40:14Well done, guys.
40:15Well done, guys.
40:16Well done, guys.
40:17Well done, guys.
40:17Well done, guys.
40:20It does look like a guitar shop.
40:22I know.
40:23Funny, that.
40:28First time for you in Hey Amoy.
40:29Is that right?
40:30First time.
40:30And I love it.
40:31It's incredible.
40:32It is just a cornucopia of, like, independent shops.
40:34It's more bookshops than anything else, but a lot of competition for our designers.
40:39Entrepreneur Ross Bailey is a trailblazer in the retail space industry.
40:43His clients range from global brands to niche pop-up stores, making him the perfect judge
40:49to join Michelle for Shops Week.
40:52When we're looking at a store, I think there's three key things that we're looking for.
40:55One is, does the store tell a great story?
40:58The second thing is, when you walk in there, is there an atmosphere?
41:00Is there a feeling?
41:01And the final thing is functionality.
41:03Like, does this thing actually work for the people day to day?
41:06If it looks beautiful on the outside, but it doesn't actually work as a store, then the store won't be
41:11successful.
41:11Really, the point of having a designer create a shop for you is to give the shop an identity.
41:16So it's not just a whole load of stuff inside there, but they've actually thought about the way to display
41:20it and the customer journey.
41:24First to be reviewed is Oil & Oak, the artsy gift shop.
41:28That was, like, absolute carnage.
41:30But I think I've done this really proud.
41:32I'm really happy with the shop.
41:34Obviously, this week, it's a 50% chance to be on the sofa.
41:37But I look at this face, and there's nothing I would change.
41:40So, to me, that's a stand-alone space.
41:43I genuinely think that we couldn't have done any more.
41:47I'm mega, mega proud.
41:48It's the quarter-final.
41:49This was a big brief, but we did it.
41:54There we go.
41:55Oh, I love that tree.
41:56I like how big it is.
41:57I like how they've bought the pages and the link to pay and the books.
42:02There's elements of it, though, like the way that the plants are put in, some of the little details, that
42:07feels a little art attack.
42:09Do you mean that in a bad way?
42:10Yeah.
42:10OK.
42:11Let's go and look inside.
42:18I like the fact that they've brought the wood that I glimpsed in the window into the shop.
42:23So, we've got real chunks of wood and a real branch in front of me.
42:27I like that.
42:28And I think you can tell that the two people designing this store have worked in shops,
42:32because just the way that it's laid out, the storage, the levels, there's a lot of clutter, right?
42:38And they've somehow managed to make it feel quite organised.
42:41It all feels quite logical, whereas some shops like this can be just...
42:45You feel like you're in a bring-and-by, don't you?
42:47It can feel overwhelming, a bit too much like in Aladdin's Cave.
42:50Yeah.
42:50And I think what Leigh has done here, getting rid of that sort of plastic stuff
42:54and actually building something bespoke, it suddenly feels like a work of art, in a way.
43:00Yes, because it's made it part of the architecture.
43:03And I really like what Leigh has done with the till.
43:07I mean, just a little bit of light like that, it just illuminates it.
43:10I love this.
43:11So, this side of the shop was more Sophie's domain.
43:15Her signature style is kind of specialist prints, particularly animal print.
43:19And I really like that at this stage of the competition,
43:23she's not felt compelled to suddenly Sophie-fy the whole space.
43:27Instead, she's echoing what they've clearly decided as a pair
43:31that's going to be their language with the raw wood,
43:33which goes with the name of the shop.
43:36But then I love that Sophie's not been afraid
43:38to just suddenly do something different.
43:40Yeah.
43:40So, you've got this sort of mad, stripey wallpaper
43:42that's really unexpected but works perfectly here
43:46because you want to...
43:47You know that I'm allowed to go up the stairs,
43:50and it just looks really enticing with all the pictures on it as well.
43:53So, shall we?
43:54Shall we check it up?
43:57It's such a simple idea to make a gallery wall, but it's so effective.
44:02When you look at the colour and the extra-ness of that wallpaper,
44:06they've really made this non-space into something interesting.
44:08Yes, and Sophie's also snuck in for the owner a little changing room.
44:12I think it's cute. It's private. They've made it special.
44:15Oh, look! That's cute.
44:18That's a nice little touch.
44:20Yes, that's really clever.
44:22Considering the store and the type of store it is,
44:25to make it work in this way,
44:26it feels like they've thought about how the store functions,
44:29and yet, at the same time, it feels very authentic and still independent.
44:34Next up, the vintage guitar shop. Why fret?
44:39I think we've created a really successful shop in there.
44:42It's an experience.
44:43The product sings against all of those beautiful backdrops
44:47that we've got in there.
44:48I think it's a really happy place to work,
44:50but also to actually go in as a customer.
44:52It's got impact. It's really been thoughtfully curated.
44:56It ticks all the boxes in terms of visual merchandising,
44:59and I'm super happy with what Duran and me have managed to achieve.
45:04This looks incredible.
45:06The store just really stands out, right?
45:07This is an amazing front cover.
45:09This side of the shop is Emily's, while this side is Duran's.
45:12I mean, Emily loves to do paper mache.
45:15I mean, it's incredible, yeah.
45:16The massive guitar is definitely a piece of her work.
45:19You mean you couldn't walk past it without stopping?
45:21It feels so unique.
45:22Well, let's go and see what's inside.
45:29Gosh, okay.
45:30Guitars.
45:31It is, then.
45:32I know that Emily and Duran were given quite specific instructions
45:36from the owner of the guitar shop.
45:39Like, he dictated the colour of the walls.
45:41He asked them to raise guitars.
45:43He was asking for the ways to display it.
45:46And so they've delivered on that.
45:48But the job of the designer is always to give me a bit more,
45:51to give me what I didn't know I was expecting.
45:54Where is the unexpected bit?
45:55I think the point around the front window being quite special,
45:59it feels like all the effort's gone into that.
46:02And actually, when I, like, look at the stage,
46:04this is fine, but I think there could have been more, right?
46:07This could have been a real feature.
46:09I get the beginnings of it here
46:11with this sort of sofa speakeasy rug thing.
46:14That is starting to tell me something a little bit different,
46:16that I could hang out here.
46:18I sort of love the idea that it feels like a club, right?
46:20So, you know, the gift shop to me is about getting in,
46:22walking around, browsing, buying a product, leaving.
46:25You nail the guitar shop.
46:26I want to be hanging out here for hours with like-minded people.
46:30This is my community.
46:31Yeah.
46:31I would have liked to see maybe a lean into that a little bit more.
46:35Yeah.
46:36Making the featured guitar thing with the light around it,
46:38that's really good, that's really clever,
46:40because when I get close to that and think,
46:42oh, why are these featured?
46:43This one's £15,000.
46:45You're like, ooh, OK, so that must be different.
46:47But what is it that creates the hierarchy
46:50or creates something that makes you realise,
46:53oh, that guitar is very different to that one?
46:57You know, Emily started to do that with the featured guitar board,
47:00but could we have taken that a little bit further?
47:04It's as if they've just gone, OK, here's all the guitars.
47:07Bricks and Mortar Retail is about storytelling
47:09and I'm not quite sure what the story is here.
47:13I mean, one thing they absolutely have done here
47:15is Joanna and Emily have worked hard to reconfigure this area,
47:18which was all a bit crowded and not working with big storage units,
47:22and I think the sofa was even over here.
47:24So, you know, all the little accessories have now been well displayed.
47:29They have made the point around the repairs bit,
47:31made the point around the sound booth.
47:32I'm interested to see what they've actually done in the sound booth.
47:34Yeah, let's go look.
47:37So I think this used to be a changing room,
47:39so Emily's converted it so people can, like, have a tryout.
47:42I think you can tell she's an artist,
47:44because she's taken the sound-absorbing panels
47:46and framed them home. Yeah, they do look beautiful.
47:48I like the way that she's put the lights around them.
47:50I think when we look at it overall,
47:53you look at the window and go,
47:54this feels like you've had professional visual merchandisers do the window.
47:58And then when you walk into the store,
48:01it feels like lots of great ideas,
48:02but it feels like a missed opportunity considering your point,
48:07how amazing some of these guitars are.
48:09And then they're just on the wall next to a guitar that's more typical.
48:14While Michelle and Ross come to a decision...
48:17Oh, my gosh!
48:19..it's time for owners Abi and Chris...
48:22Wow! Oh, my God!
48:24..to check out their new-look shops.
48:26Oh, my gosh! It looks amazing!
48:30Oh, my goodness!
48:32How have you done that in this time?
48:35I don't know, actually. No, we don't know.
48:38Can I get my words out?
48:41Oh, don't. I'm going to get emotional.
48:43Oh, my God.
48:44This is awesome.
48:45I'm going to check out your till area.
48:46Yeah. Oh, my goodness!
48:48Oh, look at this!
48:49That's so cool!
48:52Oh, my God.
48:52There's, like, really nice space behind you now.
48:54Yeah. It's lush.
48:55It's because it's been...
48:56We bulldozed the wall for you.
48:57Yeah.
48:58We did it really easily, didn't we, Gerard?
48:59Yeah.
48:59Yep.
49:00I've got a goose pimpley.
49:01Oh!
49:03Thank you so much!
49:04Thank you so much!
49:04Thank you!
49:05Leavey to reopen the shop!
49:07It was so nice to see your reaction.
49:08We were nervous.
49:09Never be able to thank you enough.
49:11Oh, no, we're...
49:12We're full!
49:16Back at the studio,
49:18the designers are about to find out
49:20which team has won standout space
49:22and who is up for elimination.
49:25Hello!
49:26Hey!
49:27Hey!
49:28Hey!
49:28Hi!
49:29Hey on Y was lovely, wasn't it?
49:32Yes!
49:33Very, yeah.
49:33Sophie Lear, with all that stock,
49:35I'm surprised you're not still in hay unpacking boxes.
49:38There was a lot of stock!
49:40A lot.
49:40It was endless, to be fair.
49:42And Duran, Emily, be honest.
49:44When the shop shut,
49:45did you grab a guitar off the wall
49:47and unleash your inner Hendrix?
49:48Bow, bow, bow!
49:50Well, Emily did.
49:51I was just doing my interpretive dancing.
49:53Was your swaying?
49:54Yeah, yeah, yeah.
49:55Always.
49:55Lovely.
49:56Listen, I thought you all did so well,
49:58but it's not my call.
50:01It's these two tricky customers you've got to please.
50:04Michelle and Ross!
50:06Woo!
50:10Hello!
50:11Hi!
50:12So, what did you think of the designers?
50:14There is no doubt that Shops Week is one of our hardest challenges.
50:19So, we could really see how hard you worked
50:22and two amazing transformations.
50:25Judging Shops is incredibly difficult
50:27because it's not just about great design,
50:29but it's about how does the shop function.
50:32And I think out of all the years of doing this,
50:34it was the best week that I've seen.
50:35So, well done.
50:35Oh, wow.
50:37So, put us out of our misery.
50:39Which designer pair has won standout space
50:42and are going through to the semi-final?
50:44Well, there was one pair that we felt
50:46that they really, really understood
50:47the way the customer was lured off the street,
50:51flowed round the shop, stayed in the shop.
50:53So, those were my three kind of pillars of design.
50:56So, congratulations.
51:03Sophie and Leah, well done.
51:09Oh, thank you.
51:11You had a very difficult brief.
51:14The product in that store is all kinds of different things, right?
51:17There's not a natural, clear story.
51:19And I think for you guys to take all of that product,
51:22lay it out and create something that made sense and flowed,
51:26I thought it was a very difficult feat
51:27and you guys did an amazing job.
51:28So, well done.
51:29So, congratulations, Sophie and Leah.
51:31We'll see you in the semi-final.
51:33And we'll see you two on the sofa.
51:43No words at the moment.
51:45Yeah.
51:45Like, absolutely buzzing.
51:46But also, like, we were so proud of what we did.
51:50And we loved it.
51:51Yeah.
51:51Really poured our heart and soul into it.
51:53Yeah.
51:53So, yeah.
51:54Really pleased.
51:56Well done, guys.
51:57Well done.
51:57Well done.
51:58Congratulations.
51:59Congratulations.
52:00Congratulations.
52:02I'm disappointed because I know that there's still so much more in me
52:06and getting this close to semi-final is, you know, you just want to be able to push that little
52:13bit and get through.
52:14But whatever the feedback is, I'm really curious to hear what she has to say.
52:18Whatever happens, we'll be fine. I've had a great time.
52:21I know you're not like...
52:24I'm just good.
52:25Yeah, I know.
52:25I'm absolutely good.
52:25I'm like, I'm heartbroken.
52:27I generally thought that I did a good job.
52:30And, um...
52:33Yeah, back on the sofa.
52:38Hey there.
52:40Yeah.
52:42Hi.
52:42So, we thought your window display was absolutely epic.
52:46Because also, what a challenge for a shop that can't actually display its merchandise in the window.
52:52So what you came up with was so evocative and fun and exciting.
52:56It looked incredible.
52:58But when you walked in the store, to me, it's more what I expected.
53:02Right.
53:03So what did you find out about the shop and the shop owner that, like, got you started?
53:09He did ask for a lot.
53:10But when he came in at the end and his reaction, I think it was everything that he kind of
53:16wanted.
53:16What I've felt is that it just looked like you were a contractor for someone that knew what he wanted.
53:24Right.
53:24And I think the difference of a designer is you're taking that, saying, look, this is what you want.
53:28We're going to follow that.
53:29We're going to be in your constraint.
53:30But this is how we're going to make it feel even more elevated or special.
53:34Right.
53:35When you walked around the store and you think about the intention and why was it there,
53:38and just where did you place things and how did it feel, something about it didn't work.
53:43The shop was very specialist.
53:44It is for people that really know what they're looking for.
53:47But let's say someone who's kind of interested in guitars.
53:50How do you get that person in?
53:51Because I go in and I was like, ooh, lots of guitars.
53:54Yeah.
53:55You know?
53:56I think it was that element of trying not to be patronising because it is such a specialist shop.
54:01But when you've got a £500 guitar right next to a £12,000 guitar laid out the exact same way,
54:08it sort of diminishes the story, it diminishes the product a little bit.
54:11You know, part of the way that we designed the shop with having that central area for seating is the
54:16conversation that happens when you're in those spaces.
54:18And that's also what we wanted to encourage is that really the information is coming from him more so than
54:23anything else.
54:24But even that lounge area, had it have been even more of a lounge area with like books for musicians
54:30or something that made that really feel like intimate.
54:33Mm-hm.
54:33But it just felt all a little flat, whereas the window felt a ten.
54:38I think if we would have maybe have just injected just that tiny bit more that we did in the
54:42windows, you're right, it would have been like wow with the window and wow with the lounge.
54:47I'm sorry, I'm really good because we really did like try, but I get what you're saying.
54:53The thing is that we're not saying it was bad. You did an amazing transformation.
54:57All the ideas were spot on. We couldn't look at something and go, well, that was wrong.
55:03Mm-hm.
55:03But that design magic that I've seen in other of your projects somehow just got a little bit diluted away
55:10because you're so focused on giving him exactly what he wanted.
55:17As you both know, there's only one place between the two of you and I find it so incredibly hard
55:25to do this,
55:27because I think you clearly worked beautifully together.
55:30But in order to pick, Emily, I mean, we really did think that the windows were an absolute triumph.
55:37And then when we were coming into the shop, the featured guitar thing, you were beginning to tell just a
55:43smidge more of the story.
55:47So for that reason, Jovan, you will be the person going home this week.
55:52And Emily, welcome to the semi-final.
56:01I would just like to say just this whole experience has been so incredible from beginning to now.
56:08And it's the trades that I want to shout out at this point, because without them, our ideas just stay
56:13on paper or in our brains.
56:15And they've been incredible.
56:17Listen, Duran, do you know what? You did it your shway.
56:21I did!
56:22You did it every week.
56:23Listen, we've loved having you on.
56:25Honestly, you're brilliant.
56:26You're such a talent.
56:27Thank you. I really appreciate it.
56:28Thank you for having me.
56:29Cheers, guys.
56:30Bye.
56:32I feel okay.
56:33I've never done interior design before.
56:35So to come and test myself in such a crazy way, like, I'm really proud of myself.
56:42Better win.
56:44I'll call my best in your honour.
56:47It's better, it's sweet.
56:48I've lost a friend, but it's the semi-final, isn't it?
56:51I can't believe I'm here.
56:53And I'm ready to come back fighting.
56:56Love you.
56:56I love you too.
56:57Keep dancing on my own.
57:06Next time.
57:08Come on, guys.
57:09The semi-final reaches fever pitch.
57:12Wow, this is a good view.
57:14As the designers transform hospitality boxes.
57:17This, to me, is a real triumph of a space.
57:20At Brighton & Hove Albion Football Stadium.
57:22We need this finish right here, right now.
57:26Come on, Alan.
57:55Off, we judo of YouTube.
57:56And he does.
57:57Let's talk about something!
57:57Certity and Loassembly Proven пошли populaire to the stars.
