00:06This week, our designers are fighting to become the top gun of interiors at the Royal Navy Air Station in
00:13Somerset.
00:14And with only two days to transform six tired mess decks, they better fill the need.
00:20The need for speed.
00:23Highway to the danger zone.
00:26As for me, I'm going maverick.
00:30Ready for take-off, sir?
00:32Well, you can take off the dirt.
00:36Welcome to Interior Design Masters.
00:41I bet Tom Cruise never had to wash his chopper.
00:50Six designers remain, hoping to partner with a major high street retailer and launch their very own homeware collection.
00:59Last time, the designers worked very closely together.
01:03And is your bum right behind me?
01:04It's right in your head.
01:06At a homelessness charity.
01:08Deserves has got two S's.
01:10Don't do this.
01:12Ajeet and Emily were the dream team.
01:16And one standout space.
01:18Yes!
01:19I'm so happy.
01:20I feel like that inside.
01:21Leah and Johnny just missed the mark.
01:23This corner unit just doesn't live up to what else I'm seeing in the room.
01:27And Ben and Kate did too much.
01:29Every little bit to me is a little bit compromised.
01:32And we're the next to leave.
01:34To go home on this space, I'm really proud.
01:46Weak.
01:46Weak.
01:47Oh, God.
01:48You've blacked out from last week.
01:49Yeah, I've erased the sofa from my memory.
01:52So last week, I had my first experience of the sofa, which I would like to avoid this week.
01:59Here we go, Navy base.
02:02I'm definitely interested in getting into a helicopter.
02:05What happens to go missing?
02:11Oh, hello.
02:12How are we all doing?
02:14Good.
02:15Congratulations.
02:16You've made it to the halfway point.
02:19I think you're really getting into the tongue and groove of it all.
02:22Well done.
02:23This week, I need your attention.
02:27Oh, I love the power.
02:30We've signed you up for the Royal Navy.
02:33You'll be transforming their air base, Mestex.
02:37The Royal Naval Air Station in Somerset is one of the busiest military aviation bases in the UK.
02:44It's a hub for helicopter operations and training the naval aircrew.
02:51Off duty, they spend their time in Mestex,
02:54a communal space for socialising, eating and relaxing.
02:59Each designer will get their very own Mestex to transform for the latest recruits.
03:05This is real Top Gun stuff.
03:08So, talk to me Goose.
03:10Sorry, Michelle.
03:13Wasn't Goose the one that died?
03:15Keep it light.
03:19This is all about creating spaces that are practical and comfortable
03:23as an escape from the regimented daily routine of life on the air station.
03:28Design really can boost morale and mood,
03:31so I want you to show me how you can do that.
03:34Michelle's wingwoman this week is a guest judge who flies high in whatever she does.
03:40After serving in the army for ten years,
03:42she'll be giving your rooms a right proper military inspection.
03:46It's Dame Kelly Holmes.
03:48Oh, wow.
03:49That's insane.
03:50What do you think about that?
03:51An Olympian looking at your rooms.
03:54Amazing.
03:56You've got two days and a budget of £2,000
03:58to transform your messy mess decks
04:02into less messy mech decks.
04:07Mess decks!
04:09Right, okay.
04:09You've got two days and a budget of £2,000
04:14to transform your messy mess decks
04:16into less messy mess decks.
04:20Phew.
04:21Let's hope it's easier to do than say.
04:24Now, get out.
04:25Fly high, my pretties.
04:26Fly, fly before I say it again.
04:30The designers have arrived at the Royal Naval Air Station Yeovleton,
04:34also known as HMS Heron.
04:36Oh!
04:37Oh, my God!
04:39That's a piece of machinery, that is.
04:41To meet their clients.
04:43We're so excited to get to work on your mess decks.
04:46You guys like them currently, or...?
04:48I don't know.
04:49There's nothing that really keeps us in there, really,
04:50because it's just so dull, it's uninspiring, it's boring.
04:54What's the main thing you'd like to use it for?
04:57Socialising.
04:58It would be nice to have a space where in the block
05:00we can all, like, get together
05:01and have, like, a nice space to do it in,
05:03not just, like, beige walls.
05:05Be somewhere to sort of relax, have a bit of downtime.
05:08And, like, not work-inspired.
05:10I don't want to go home and see, like, helicopters on the walls.
05:15I want to go home to, like, a light, bright, nice space.
05:19Right.
05:20Yeah.
05:20We'll give you our best.
05:21Yes.
05:22Bye.
05:22Bye.
05:25While they're on base, the sailors stay in mess blocks,
05:28sleeping upstairs in dormitories
05:30and hanging out together downstairs in their mess decks.
05:34Ooh.
05:35It's a sad space, isn't it?
05:37There's an on-site canteen, but for after-hours snacks...
05:40I've never been able to do that in a room in my life.
05:44There are kitchenettes...
05:46I'm not kidding.
05:47I think my nan had a kitchen that was a bit like this.
05:49..and lounge areas.
05:50I'm going to put a projector screen there
05:52so you can sort of hang out here and watch films.
05:55The designers can start afresh with furniture...
05:58This table can only really sit four and doesn't feel inviting.
06:02..or incorporate existing pieces into their new designs.
06:06Keeping the sofas,
06:07cos actually they're pretty, like, plush.
06:13Store for my new breakfast bar.
06:16I have a second-hand kitchen
06:18that I ripped out of some lovely lady's house.
06:2130 quid.
06:22Absolute bargain.
06:24This is my sofa,
06:25which is the best find in second-hand history.
06:28It's so epic, I can't wait to put it in the space.
06:30It's, like, a round, massive, cool, designer-style sofa
06:34and I paid, like, 450 quid worth.
06:37To help achieve their vision,
06:39each designer will have a carpenter and a decorator.
06:42Morning!
06:43Hey!
06:43Morning!
06:44How are we doing?
06:45So the inspiration for the room is, like, Scandinavian design.
06:49My idea of, like, the navy is quite rigid
06:51and so I wanted to create a lot of softness.
06:53Like, we've got a lot of curvature going on,
06:55a lot of circles.
06:57We're extending the kitchen out to here
06:59and there'll be a partition wall here.
07:02I'm sectioning off the kitchen with my plywood screens,
07:06which I'll have holes drilled out of.
07:07So having the holes in there
07:09adds to this kind of circle curvature thing
07:11that I wanted to bring into the space.
07:12Right, so you've got two full sheets of ply
07:16and that one's five across.
07:19For me, the partition
07:20is the most important parts of the design.
07:22I reckon about 250 holes is going to take him
07:24quite a bit of time.
07:26It's going to be great.
07:26It's going to be fantastic.
07:28It's going to work.
07:30While Johnny's kitchenette is partitioned off...
07:34There's quite a lot to do in a very bare room.
07:37OK.
07:38Don't look too scared, Phil.
07:40Leah's is relocating.
07:42We are going to start with moving the kitchen
07:45out of its current location
07:47and make a really large kitchen island.
07:50My design inspiration
07:51is going back to my Italian roots.
07:54It's really important
07:55that the kitchen
07:55is such a big part of the house.
07:57So kind of a country kitchen
07:59coming into this main section
08:01with some really nice florals and bright colours
08:03to make this space much more vibrant.
08:05It's kind of like home from home.
08:06When I was looking for my own house,
08:08the one thing for me which was no compromise
08:11is the kitchen.
08:11We have this big island.
08:13We host loads of parties
08:14and everyone just socialises around the island.
08:18Leah's placing her bespoke kitchen island
08:21in the centre of her mess deck.
08:23Her second-hand kitchen will be upcycled
08:25with a lick of rich red paint
08:27and brass light pendants will hang from the ceiling
08:30to create a cosy kitchen vibe.
08:33She'll convert the old kitchenette into a pantry,
08:35swapping the wall-hung cabinets for open shelving.
08:40The space will be colour-drenched in a bright green
08:43and a feature wall will express Leah's
08:45botanical maximalist style.
08:48Beyond the kitchen,
08:49she's creating a cosy cinema snug,
08:52adding a new projector, screen
08:54and an ingenious additional seating solution.
08:59The bench will slide into that end, yeah?
09:01Yeah, so basically slot under there
09:03when it's not in use,
09:04doesn't take up too much space in the room.
09:06The bench underneath will be on casters.
09:08Right.
09:08So that part, they can move to the other section of the room
09:11if they want to use it in the cinema snug
09:13or they can wheel it back in and use it in the kitchen.
09:15Yeah.
09:15Nice.
09:21Hello, hello, hello.
09:23Hello, hello.
09:25Sophie's colour palette has been inspired by a naval tradition.
09:29Talk me through it.
09:30The goal is to get your colours all the way around the board
09:32and then back into the hole.
09:34The concept I had for the room was based on the board game Uckers,
09:38which is a traditional navy game.
09:40So I wanted to bring that into the aesthetic.
09:43Does the game get played then in the Mestex?
09:46Or would you like it to get played in the Mestex?
09:49We'd probably quite like four of us to come down in an evening
09:51and having the space to do it would be fun.
09:55Oh.
09:55This wall, we're going to do basically a box.
09:59Starting about here.
10:01Essentially, the idea has come from the Uckers board,
10:03from the arrows and blocks of colour,
10:05to take, like, this arrow motif around the room,
10:08wrapping the walls, going over the ceiling,
10:11just to tie that concept together.
10:13I love this colour.
10:15Duran's also got a statement wall in mind.
10:18A really good start.
10:20I've not even done anything yet.
10:22Ugh!
10:23With one of her signature squiggles,
10:25which will wrap up Anna around her mess deck.
10:27I've been inspired by the era that the Airbase was founded in,
10:32which is the Art Deco era transitioning into streamline modern,
10:35which mimics the lines of transport, like, ships and trains,
10:39and the mural will take your eye kind of around the room
10:42and into the kitchen.
10:44It's a really nice technique to get it kind of irregular
10:48and organic, is to, like, shake and turn the brush.
10:51I think it's always a bit nerve-wracking
10:54when you first put the paint on,
10:55because, you know, you have to trust your instincts the whole way.
10:59Ooh!
11:03It feels naughty.
11:05A few doors down...
11:07That black is pretty black, isn't it?
11:11Emily's gone to the dark side.
11:14For someone that wears a lot of black all the time,
11:16I don't really use black in my colour palette.
11:19I always go for, like, bright, poppy colours.
11:22But I wanted to try and see, because it does add drama.
11:27Already the glow of the light on that black is stunning.
11:31I spoke to, like, my brother, who's 19.
11:33I just sort of worked through what he'd want in a space
11:36away from home.
11:38And I think it just needs to be a bit more cooler in here.
11:40And I'm like, well, I'm just going to give you sci-fi,
11:43which is timelessly cool.
11:45I love, like, the sci-fi aesthetic.
11:46And when I was researching, like, what the sailors do,
11:50it is so, like, out of this world.
11:52And it's, like, the ships and the helicopters
11:55and things like that.
11:55And I just sort of wanted to do, like, little winks of sci-fi.
12:01Is that what you wanted it to look like?
12:02I think it would go darker, though, right?
12:03Yeah, it should go darker.
12:04I think if it darkens up a little bit more,
12:06then that would be fine.
12:07On the other end of the colour spectrum,
12:09it's Ajit.
12:10So as part of my research,
12:12I looked into some of the elements of colour theory
12:14and saw that orange is a really significant colour
12:16to symbolise friendship and social interaction.
12:19So that being a key aspect to address for the space,
12:22I've incorporated that in my design.
12:24It already feels like you're, like,
12:25really friendly to me at the moment.
12:26Yeah, I feel happy.
12:27Yeah.
12:29Oh, my God, Rosie, you're flying through it.
12:31Yes!
12:34This is where I wish I had a hundred arms.
12:37How do they kick in here?
12:39You can barely wash a dish in here.
12:42So the existing kitchen is right at the back
12:45and it's a bit dark, it's a bit dingy.
12:48So I've decided to turn that actually into a pantry.
12:52For the tiles in the kitchen,
12:54we don't have time to take them off and change them.
12:57So I'm just using a tile grout pen, which is black.
13:01So I'm just going round basically the current grout,
13:03which is white.
13:05It's super quick, super cheap and super easy.
13:07So it gives it a new kind of facelift.
13:12Sophie's also creating a pantry, complete with some wild walls.
13:17This space is HMS Heron.
13:19So I've got some Heron wallpaper to go in the pantry.
13:22Because it's such a tiny space,
13:23I think it'll make it a lot more interesting,
13:25especially against the open shelving
13:27that's going to be made from reclaimed wood.
13:29Wallpaper looks really cute, love it.
13:32As well as his orange ceiling,
13:34Ajit's adding the traditional British colours
13:36of red, white and blue.
13:39Because we're on a Royal Navy base,
13:41I really wanted to kind of take that thread
13:44and integrate a little bit of that into my design.
13:47This is pinkier than I was expecting.
13:50This is kind of giving me quite Sweeney Todd vibes right now.
13:54They're a bit gross.
13:55Oh, chewing gum.
13:56Yeah.
13:57I'll scrape that off later.
13:59So glamorous.
14:01As well as the Heron and Uckers game inspiration.
14:04Oh, this is nice.
14:07I feel like I'm in the pub.
14:08Can we get me a bag of gifts?
14:10Sophie's also bringing in another theme with her furniture.
14:13I want the sailors to just be really excited by the space
14:19and just hanging out and playing games.
14:21And I think they need a pub.
14:23I think they need the Sophie Tavern to open.
14:29Sophie's tavern will be decked out
14:31with her secondhand Chesterfield sofa,
14:34bar stools, tables and even a piano.
14:37There's a muted version of the Uckers board colours
14:40of red, yellow and blue up the walls
14:42and ceiling.
14:44Along with her statement wallpaper,
14:47Sophie is hanging reclaimed wooden shelves
14:49to her kitchenette for extra storage.
14:53And she's tying her multiple themes together
14:56by creating an L-shaped breakfast bar
14:59from a secondhand kitchen unit.
15:03We need 860 for the height for this.
15:07This is upside down, yeah?
15:09My big breakfast bar, it's looking good.
15:11It's giving storage,
15:12it's giving food prep area,
15:14a games table as well.
15:16So, yeah,
15:16my multifunctional build is coming along well.
15:19Good!
15:20That's all I just plan.
15:23Oh, God!
15:24All the shelves are falling!
15:28Welcome to Sophie's Tavern.
15:29What can I get you?
15:30Go!
15:36Squatch!
15:37Squatch!
15:38Quick!
15:39March!
15:40They want you!
15:41They want you!
15:42They want you!
15:42They want you!
15:42They want you!
15:43They want you!
15:43They want you!
15:43They want you!
15:44They want you!
15:45They want you!
15:46They want you!
15:48Thanks for offering to take me to the designers.
15:51Didn't need all of you to come,
15:53but all the merrier.
15:55Squatch!
15:55In the Navy, in the Navy, in the Navy, in the Navy.
15:58Squad, head!
16:00You. You with your slip-ons.
16:02Slip-ons? This is Italian leather. I've got them off the market.
16:05What's your name?
16:06Alan.
16:07Alan what?
16:08Alan Carr.
16:09Alan Carr, sir!
16:10Alan Carr, sir!
16:12Carr, you're dismissed.
16:14Squad, right, head!
16:17Match!
16:18I want to know where the mess decks are.
16:21I need to meet the designers.
16:23He needs to chill out.
16:25Meet the baby, meet the baby.
16:31Sophie!
16:32Hello!
16:33Oh, nice for me!
16:35Yeah, a bit of a pub vibe.
16:37And what would this pub be called?
16:38Sophie's Tavern, obviously.
16:40There you go!
16:41This is going to be a big breakfast bar, which is on casters.
16:44It can be used for food prep while it's in situ in the kitchen.
16:47Yeah!
16:47It can then be wheeled over for a games night.
16:50It's multifunctional.
16:51What's this?
16:52Uckers.
16:54What do you call me?
16:55What?
16:56Uckers?
16:57What's an ucker?
16:58So it's a traditional navy board game.
17:00This is going to be their own bespoke uckers board.
17:03Oh!
17:04Yeah.
17:04That's clever.
17:05But they still play it now.
17:06My mum plays it.
17:07No!
17:07She's a mother ucker.
17:09Really?
17:13Oh, you all right?
17:16Yeah.
17:16This is my bar top.
17:19Emily's vision for communal dining requires a baffling build.
17:23So you know, like, how the table top will spin out?
17:27Yeah.
17:28In my head, I was thinking, is there a way of having the table top like there, and then the
17:34leg goes like here?
17:35This is very complicated.
17:37This week I'm doing my big builds that I've never done before, but I'm not here just to
17:41repeat what I know I can do.
17:43Just going to have to make it and see.
17:46Let's go for it.
17:47Yep.
17:48It's 10 past 11.
17:49Do you reckon we can get all of that built before lunch?
17:52No.
17:53Great.
17:53Yeah.
17:54Yeah.
17:57Ajay.
17:58Oh, hello.
17:59A little breakfast bar?
18:00Just a little bar.
18:01It's all right, then.
18:02Ajay's gone for a rough and ready feel.
18:05So I've decided to use OSB as a primary texture in my space, really taking some of the industrial
18:11textures that we see across the Navy base.
18:13There's a lot of kind of heavy machinery and mechanics going around, so I've kind of touched
18:18on some industrial elements through some of my texture, so bringing that into my nest egg.
18:24Hoist the mainsail.
18:26It's still wonk.
18:27It's still wonk?
18:28Yeah.
18:28It's not a naval term.
18:29Duran's had a brainwave.
18:31How to extend a galley kitchen.
18:33Put your food down.
18:35Prepare on there.
18:36And because it's in line with the worktop, it should just read as one long unit.
18:41Pretty impressive myself.
18:43Come to my island.
18:44Woo!
18:46Oh, it looks amazing.
18:47So it's going to go in the centre of the, like, kitchen area, bang in the middle.
18:52Yeah.
18:53And then we're going to get the two pendant lights, which will then drop over the island
18:57as well.
18:57I mean, it looks like an expensive kitchen island for, like, 60 quid.
19:03Plus labour.
19:04That's free, no?
19:04Oh.
19:06Coffee?
19:07Paint?
19:08Biscuit?
19:11Johnny's team has been going round in circles to get his design right.
19:16I have drilled 43 holes of the 63 needed for this one panel here.
19:22And I've got three panels to do.
19:28Looking good.
19:30It's going okay?
19:31I'm never going to want to drill another hole again when I finish this.
19:37The Scandi-style plywood screen will section off Johnny's kitchenette from the living area
19:43and provide extra prep space.
19:45He's echoing this design in a light feature, which he will suspend over a dining unit, which
19:51doubles up as a ping pong table.
19:53For relaxation, Johnny's bringing in bean bags and his bargain designer boucle sofa, which he's
20:00colour matched in his ceiling and complemented in the rich, warm teal walls.
20:07The screen is in place.
20:10Thank you so much.
20:11It's taken a long time to do all these circles, but it had to be done because it's such a
20:16big
20:16part of the design.
20:18Watch the step.
20:19Emily is also creating different zones with a futuristic feel.
20:24So I'm going to just put just a natural curve along here just to break that space up just
20:32subtly.
20:34Spaceship energy.
20:36Okay, so which one of these lines do you want me to follow?
20:41Just the mid one.
20:43Spring has sprung at Lees.
20:45Oh, guys, it looks so good.
20:47It's nice, isn't it?
20:49Love it.
20:51I absolutely love florals and I love wallpaper.
20:54To be honest, they're just a combination of years of wallpapers I've loved and wanted
20:57to use.
20:58Actually, now we've got the red furniture in and, like, the wood and now the paper's up.
21:02Yeah, I'm really happy with it.
21:05Leia!
21:06Hi, Alan.
21:07I love this colour.
21:09Yeah.
21:10So this is the new kitchen that's going in and then the whole kitchen area will be here
21:15with a massive island.
21:17You're so Italian.
21:20For me, I was like, no one's prepping food in there.
21:23I know.
21:23No way.
21:24Now, you haven't won standout space.
21:29No.
21:29Is that on your bucket list?
21:31I would love to win standout space.
21:33Five other amazing designers, sadly, who really spoil it for me every week.
21:38If they weren't involved in the competition, you'd have a really good chance.
21:42Life would be much easier, yeah.
21:43See you later, Alan.
21:45Oh, oh, oh.
21:47I nearly lost an eye.
21:49Where there's blameless acclaims.
21:51Sorry about that, Alan.
21:56Still got the cupboards to do in the kitchen.
21:58Still cupboards to do.
21:59And then, obviously, instead of the kitchen.
22:00And then flooring.
22:01And then flooring.
22:02It's the end of day one, and things are winding down on the naval base.
22:06I'm feeling pretty good at the moment with how the design is going, but there's still quite
22:12a bit for us to do tomorrow.
22:15Stunning.
22:16Yeah.
22:17It's really, really beautiful.
22:19I'm feeling good.
22:20It's been a productive day.
22:22We've got the partition wall up.
22:24We've got the main block colors on the wall.
22:27Yeah, there's been a lot of truth today.
22:30Oh, lovely.
22:31Natural textures.
22:32Love it.
22:32Today, I've managed to get pretty much all of the kitchen fit built.
22:38Good progress today.
22:39I'm happy.
22:40Sophie Stavon will be open for business in 24 hours.
22:46God.
23:00It's day two, and the designers have just 12 hours left.
23:04All right, this is me.
23:06Good luck.
23:07I don't know if it's being used yet, but I love it, so let's see if we can make it
23:11work.
23:12Get the chess pieces out.
23:14We've got both two floors to put down in the pantry and in the kitchen.
23:19Wardroves need made.
23:20Maybe some artwork to be done.
23:23With the walls painted and papered...
23:25Glassware.
23:26There.
23:27..the designers are unleashing their inner artists.
23:32Hiya, Jeet.
23:34Hey, Alan.
23:34How you doing?
23:35Hey.
23:35Why are you painting a pigeon?
23:37It's a heron.
23:38Oh, yeah, you're right.
23:39Yeah.
23:39Paying homage to the emblem of the base.
23:42Is art in your skill set?
23:44Will you often pick up a paintbrush and think, oh, I'm going to draw a heron?
23:47Not quite, Alan.
23:49This is why I had to resort to an AI-generated image that I then projected onto the canvas and
23:53drew over the lines.
23:54AI?
23:55They're taking our jobs, AI.
23:57Why are you giving...
23:57This could have been done by a real heron.
24:01Well, listen, I'll leave you to that.
24:03Nice to see you're not flapping.
24:04Yeah.
24:04Did you get it?
24:05Flapping, yeah.
24:06Yeah, got it.
24:07AI will never replace me because I've got quality jokes like that.
24:10Ha!
24:11Take that, AI.
24:14Flower power to the people.
24:16I didn't want to do anything, like, super cheesy or, you know, put a big plane in the room or
24:22something.
24:22So, I've thought to make them a helicopter but just outline it with some flowers so it really ties in
24:28with my wallpaper.
24:32Hi, Emily.
24:33Hi, Alan.
24:34How are you?
24:35Come on, you've got to be doing some interior design, not hula hooping.
24:39Oh, no.
24:40Oh.
24:42Oh, help.
24:43There you go.
24:43Oh, you've cut me out of a hula hoop.
24:45Have things got that bad?
24:47Listen, you must be buzzing.
24:50A, you weren't on the sofa last week.
24:52I mean, that was a really good stuff, wasn't it?
24:53I know.
24:54The sofa was like, where's Emily gone?
24:56And you won standout space.
24:58I know, can you believe it?
24:59So, tell us about your mess, Dick.
25:01We've gone sci-fi.
25:04Great.
25:07You said you didn't want to end up on the sofa.
25:09Michelle does not like a theme.
25:11I am not themy or gimmicky.
25:13I'm just doing hints of sci-fi because I just wanted it to be a cool space for these, like,
25:17sailors to hang out.
25:18So, these are actual hula hoops?
25:19They are hula hoops.
25:21They're frames for the notice board.
25:22So, can you see here, I was going to back it with cork and then spray it silver so you
25:27can put your pins in and stuff and then it's like a little portal.
25:30I get it now.
25:31That's sci-fi-y, isn't it?
25:33Yeah.
25:33Yes.
25:34Most people just have a boring, plain old notice board.
25:37We're not like most people, are we?
25:38Most people are boring.
25:40Yeah, that's true.
25:45One big challenge for the designers...
25:48Their fridges have got a little house.
25:50...is what to do with the four fridges.
25:53They can just be ugly inside, behind closed doors.
25:57Could you stand in that hall of me?
25:59Some are integrating them into their designs...
26:02I wanted to hide the fridges.
26:04They are ugly.
26:06And, yeah, just needed to get rid of them.
26:08You're a perfect height for this job, honestly.
26:10You really are.
26:11I don't think I've ever been told of that, ever.
26:14There you are.
26:16While lovers are out and proud.
26:19I didn't feel it was necessary to box and hide them away, so they're out.
26:24They're there.
26:25They're fridges.
26:26What's in your cupboard?
26:28It's like a game show.
26:29You've won a fridge.
26:31And for the special prize, a freezer.
26:36Well done.
26:37They're safe.
26:37You're going home with them.
26:39Don't say I'm going home.
26:41No.
26:41Oh, no, yes.
26:42No, no, no.
26:44Johnny's hidden his behind one of his feature Scandi panels.
26:48Okay, so we need to get this up then, Rob.
26:50And with the second panel, he's doing something very enlightening.
26:55So this is connecting the two design languages between my kitchen and this table here.
27:00So the lights will come through the holes.
27:02It's just kind of like an art piece, really.
27:04It kind of makes it feel fun.
27:05It hopefully makes it kind of, you know, sections it.
27:09So, yeah, that's kind of the motivation behind it.
27:12I don't know how they go on.
27:14I think I, in my opinion, have surpassed my design vision.
27:18I feel so chuffed with what I've achieved.
27:20And I think it's such a huge part of the design and so integral to the space that actually,
27:25you know, I couldn't imagine the space without it now.
27:28There.
27:28Perfect.
27:29Yeah.
27:29Yeah.
27:31Yeah.
27:31And then I've got the light bulb here.
27:33Duran has also turned her hand to a bit of lighting design.
27:37I have a pendant light made from plaster of Paris and recycled card and paper.
27:43It's a really, really easy way to create something completely unique out of materials that don't cost very much.
27:47This is a battery-powered light bulb.
27:50So, you've got a little remote.
27:53Wow.
27:56That's where all my great ideas come.
27:57You got another idea?
28:00I love it.
28:01It's so cool.
28:02It's abstract.
28:09Sophie!
28:10Hello!
28:11Oh, you've got the old Joanna in.
28:13I guess.
28:14Come on, then.
28:14Do you play anything?
28:16Not confidently.
28:17I can.
28:18I can play the EastEnders theme tune.
28:20Can you?
28:21Anyone can fall in love, that's the easy part.
28:28It's badly tuned.
28:29How much does a piano cost?
28:32If you haggle for a second-hand one.
28:33Yeah.
28:3435 quid.
28:35No way!
28:3635 quid?
28:38That's amazing.
28:39I know.
28:40This is perfect for your pub theme.
28:42Exactly.
28:42It's a pub piano.
28:43Are you nearly done?
28:47I was being polite.
28:49Am I ever?
28:50No.
28:51Listen, you always do pull it out of the bag, though.
28:53But, I mean, is this even for you too tight?
28:55I thought I was doing all right till you came here.
28:58And started playing that music?
29:00Do you like Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen?
29:01Go on!
29:02I haven't got time, I'm afraid.
29:04I'll leave you to it.
29:06Sophie's going for a pub vibe in her room,
29:09with uckers, a Chesterfield sofa, and pub stalls, piano.
29:13If she gets it right, she could win standout space.
29:16If she gets it wrong, it could be last orders.
29:23Left, right, left, right.
29:25We haven't got long.
29:26What haven't we got?
29:28Wrong!
29:28Two, four, six, eight.
29:30We like to decorate.
29:32Yes!
29:36It's halfway through day two.
29:38The Chesterfield's going over there.
29:40I think it looks like a completely different sofa,
29:43now that it's in this space.
29:44I think it looks great.
29:45And while Leah and Duran have kept the original sofas...
29:49I managed to get this sofa for just a hundred quid.
29:52Others...
29:53Back up against this screen.
29:55...have scooped up second-hand bargains.
29:57That sofa I've got looks designer.
29:59It looks like it should be thousands of pounds,
30:01and I paid 450 quid.
30:02Things like that are going to transform it
30:04and take it to another level.
30:05With seating sorted, next in, the tables.
30:10Get it out then.
30:11All right.
30:16It's beautiful, isn't it?
30:18I want one of these in my house.
30:20It's not like I've got the room.
30:21Ain't that gorgeous?
30:23Hi Duran.
30:24Hello.
30:25Hello, what are you doing?
30:27Making a Jenga coffee table.
30:29Of course you are.
30:31Well, say someone's having their tea
30:33and then someone pulls away a Jenga strip
30:35and they end up with soup over their crush.
30:37I did think of that, so I'm gluing them together.
30:40So how do you come up with these things?
30:42Well, I was inspired by the pineapple coffee table
30:45that was made in 1940.
30:47That's the coffee table there.
30:49And I thought the legs...
30:51Oh, I see now, I get it.
30:52The legs look like Jenga to me.
30:54They do?
30:54Yeah.
30:55So I was looking for inspiration from that era.
30:58It's like art deco going into streamline modern,
31:00so a lot of...
31:01Streamline modern?
31:02Yeah.
31:02That's what I've based on my design.
31:03You make these words up.
31:05You make up words and then you make me feel stupid
31:07I promise I'm not!
31:08Because I don't know what they are.
31:09Streamline modern?
31:10Yeah.
31:11It's just a subtle nod to, you know, having a good time with your mates.
31:14Come on out your room, have a laugh, play fake Jenga.
31:17It's attached to a table, but try and have fun.
31:20Exactly.
31:23While Duran recreates a 1930s design classic...
31:27I managed to bag some pallets.
31:29Ajit's been upcycling.
31:31So I went to go visit my mum at her nursing home a couple of weeks ago
31:33and they're doing a renovation so they've got loads of pallets
31:37that were in their car parks.
31:38So I'm going to make a coffee table.
31:40So I'm going to give it a sand, give it a varnish,
31:43stack them on together and then I've got some casters as well.
31:46They've got a kind of modular piece of furniture for the mess deck.
31:50Johnny!
31:51Hey, Alan!
31:52What's this?
31:53It's a table?
31:55Basically, it's a dining table with benches
31:57that I'm converting into a dining table
32:00with table tennis facilities on it.
32:03But you can't combine it.
32:04No one wants a ping pong ball in their ramen.
32:07I'm trying to eat!
32:09Back off!
32:11Oh, my God, so this is coming off.
32:13This is coming off.
32:14So I've stained it dark and I taped out the table tennis court.
32:18So we need to just give it a little tug, I think.
32:20OK.
32:21This way.
32:22Like that?
32:22Yeah, perfect.
32:23There you are.
32:24Look at me stripping!
32:25Alan, stop it!
32:27Da-da-da-da!
32:36Oh, it's going round the bend!
32:38Yes!
32:39I think I'm going round the bend.
32:40And I can see the effect.
32:43Look so quick!
32:43So it's really cool, isn't it?
32:44Are we going to see more of your signature style this week?
32:46Yeah, I think so. I mean, my signature style is rooted in mid-century and make it feel expensive and,
32:53you know, hopefully this design is a true reflection of, like, my design style.
32:57Well, listen, let me know when this is done. You grab the knife and fork, I'll grab the ping-pong
33:01back.
33:01Absolutely. See you in a bit.
33:03See you, Alan.
33:12Emily, I've got a bone to pick with you. Look what I've found in the bin.
33:17Hula hoops.
33:18Yeah, not all art is good art, Alan.
33:21So why are they... Why'd you put them in the bin?
33:23I was having a moment of madness and I was like, why would I ruin this beautiful room?
33:27All right, well, listen, let's try and be positive.
33:30Black ceiling. It works.
33:33You know, I was looking at these strip lights and they were driving me absolutely crazy, but already the black
33:38softens the glow.
33:39And it is sort of sci-fi, but it's not, like, gimmicky or tacky.
33:43Yeah, because I was worried, you know, just overdoing it.
33:47So I've just kept it, kind of mixed it with, like, you know, blacks and softer colours, so it didn't
33:52look too spaceship-y.
33:53Yeah, it looks futuristic.
33:55That's the word.
33:56That's the word.
33:57But where's the fun for the sailors going to be?
34:00Thoughts on darts.
34:02Love darts.
34:03Do you want to play a game?
34:04Yeah, love it.
34:05These beautiful walls are going to get ruined.
34:07All the projector screen.
34:08I didn't even know it was up there.
34:10Now you're putting me off.
34:15One.
34:15Is that good or bad?
34:17What do you think?
34:19That board looks wicked.
34:21I'm dead happy with that.
34:22The main purpose of this design brief is to create a space to relax and socialise.
34:28This table is their dining area, their games table, and it's got this really cool function
34:33where you can actually put things underneath.
34:36I think design-wise what attracted me to this at first was the chrome legs.
34:40That really fits really well with streamlined modern design, and the glass top was the perfect cherry on the top.
34:47Oh, there we go.
34:48Oh, yeah, come on.
34:53So, would you have this in your own house?
34:57Personally, I wouldn't have this in my house.
35:00I'm more of a cocktail bar guy rather than a football table.
35:03Yeah, but we haven't got time for another game, though, sadly, have we?
35:06Oh, how convenient.
35:11Yay!
35:12Got the cinema screen up, and then the blackout blind behind, just so that it blocks out all
35:16the way coming from the patio door so they can actually watch a film at any time of the day.
35:20It doesn't even have to be dark.
35:22Dave, what are we watching?
35:24Shrek?
35:25I'm back into here with the Zionist.
35:27Oh.
35:28One hour to go!
35:29Oh, God.
35:34Final touches, here we come.
35:37Two low tables need to come in.
35:39The chrome accents just make it pop.
35:42I'm a magpie, so anything that shines, I love it.
35:44I need the fan, because I think I might pass out in this panic room.
35:49Duran?
35:50Yeah?
35:51Chip!
35:52Chuck, come on!
35:54Time's ticking!
36:01Finished.
36:03Sophie's tavern is open.
36:04Ockers and pints all round.
36:06Sorry for all my swively, confusing designs.
36:09Couldn't have done it without you, and I'm finished.
36:12Anchors down, feet up.
36:14That is the bad guys.
36:15Let's go.
36:16Let's get out of here.
36:20The Eagles have landed.
36:23Michelle and Dame Kelly Holmes have rendezvoused to inspect the mess decks.
36:27Sir Kelly, how does it feel?
36:29I mean, you're back on a military establishment.
36:31I know, as soon as I come into a military barrack, I look around and I feel, yeah, it's partly
36:37my home.
36:38Dame Kelly Holmes is a British sporting legend, winning two gold medals in the 2004 Olympics.
36:46But she started her career serving ten years in the British Army.
36:50Having been in the military, I want to walk into that room and say, yes, if I were still
36:54serving, this would be the room that I'd love to spend my time in.
36:57Our designers have been presented with a blank canvas.
37:01So this is where design can really play a big part.
37:04It can boost morale.
37:06It can make a space that you want to hang out in.
37:13The mess deck now has a purpose.
37:15My biggest achievement is really extending that kitchen space and providing more functionality
37:19and space for more than one person to actually cook their food.
37:22So I'm really, really proud of what I've done.
37:26There's a very strong colour theme here.
37:29I feel kind of, it's quite sort of nautical with stripes going all the way around.
37:33What do you think about the orange ceiling?
37:35I've never seen an orange ceiling before.
37:37It's quite tangoed, isn't it?
37:40I find it very bright, especially with the fluorescence.
37:43So the kitchen has been pretty well left as it was.
37:46I mean, he's painted the tiles, but he's really inviting you to do most of your cooking and prep out
37:52here.
37:53I like his introduction of the OSB board for the sort of texture.
37:57I do love a bit of texture.
37:59I like the way that Ajit is hidden in the fridges.
38:02They're sort of out of your mind.
38:04And we don't actually remember that they're here.
38:06I find myself imagining how I would use it.
38:08So I would come in.
38:09I think, right, I'm starving.
38:11Sit down on the sofa.
38:13I'm going to cook you some pasta.
38:14Do you want yours with or without chilli?
38:15Love some chilli, please.
38:16All right.
38:17Even though I'm turned away, I'm still connected to the room, which is quite nice.
38:22I do like that.
38:23I feel that Ajit's delivered us here a really solid design.
38:27Quite roughy-toughy, doesn't matter if you get it dirty.
38:30They're not going to be scared of using the space.
38:32And that's what you want.
38:33You want as many people in here.
38:34It feels very fit-for-purpose, very user-friendly.
38:45I really hope Michelle and Kelly will walk in and think, wow, okay, it's different.
38:51But actually, it's a sociable space.
38:53And I am really proud of what I've achieved.
38:56And I really love it.
38:57I would love to hang out in there.
39:03Definitely a pubby vibe.
39:05I'm literally expecting the floor to be sticky.
39:08I see she's made a very sort of clever colour scheme.
39:12I kind of love the idea that we're inspired by a traditional navy game.
39:16And I can see that she's sort of brought in this very fancy-pants wallpaper in the kitchen,
39:20which I find that very odd.
39:22That wallpaper, even though whether people like it or don't,
39:25should have been brought into the pub from the wall because that's what you would see in an old pub.
39:30And this feels like an old man's pub, doesn't it?
39:32Yeah.
39:32And yet there's other details in there that actually look quite interesting.
39:35So let's go have a look.
39:36I really like how she sort of added these raw wood shelves in there.
39:40But those lovely wooden shelves, if she'd even extended those out here,
39:44then these spaces start to talk to each other.
39:46Yeah.
39:47I think it's going to be a space where the sailors living here will find it quite quirky.
39:52They'll go, oh, wow, this is cool, right, pub, you know, kind of that vibe.
39:55But I don't think the sailors are actually even allowed to drink in their accommodation.
40:00So Sophie's actually dangling something that they cannot indulge in.
40:04Yeah.
40:04If it was designed better based on this look, then it could have worked well.
40:16I just really thought about, you know, the age of the people that are using it.
40:20And I'm really excited to see what they're going to say.
40:23But I'd like to probably not hear it via the sofa.
40:34Oh, wow.
40:35The black is going across the ceiling and then down the other side.
40:39I wouldn't normally go with that, but I think with the strip lighting, it probably helps, right?
40:43Well, black's an unusual colour.
40:45Because you've got that light coming through, all that light reflects off the black.
40:48So it doesn't make a space necessarily feel really dark.
40:51I like the archway.
40:53The archway is quite a sort of soft way to tell me that this is one zone and that's a
40:57different zone over here.
40:58Yeah.
40:58It does make the room work more as a whole room.
41:02I think I like this area quite a lot because it's got what I would expect Mass Debt to have.
41:09Everyone loves a pool table in the military.
41:10I do remember doing this a lot.
41:12So I like it.
41:13Yeah, dartboard and then a projector.
41:16This is interesting.
41:17This is on wheels.
41:19Do you think that means that this can all twist away?
41:22That's clever.
41:23Is this something that Emily's kind of done before?
41:24I don't think she's ever done anything like this before.
41:27Wow.
41:28Apparently Emily used the idea of sci-fi to kind of provide a bit of a loose theme for some
41:33of her design decisions.
41:35Do you pick that up at all?
41:36Are you feeling that?
41:37I actually don't pick that up.
41:39I mean, I think that's a good thing.
41:46I really hope when Michelle and Kelly walk into the space, they also instantly come in and say that they
41:52feel really homely and it feels really cozy and it feels really warm and inviting.
41:57And that they want to sit up at the island and sit and have a cup of tea together.
42:04Oh, gosh, I love all the touches.
42:07I mean, there's so much.
42:08I feel like I'm grinning because there's so much in here that my eyes are drawn to.
42:13I love this space.
42:14See, in my head, my fantasy of joining the Navy and being part of one of these kind of crews,
42:20I imagined sitting around a big table eating together.
42:24Finally, I found a mess room that's actually got that sort of table that I feel like I could get
42:31everyone together.
42:32That makes me very happy.
42:33I kind of seem like a sneaky yellow there, so I'm quite intrigued to see.
42:37I don't know if this comes out or not, but oh, it does.
42:40Look.
42:42Okay.
42:42Yes.
42:43Oh, okay.
42:44That's nice.
42:45That is brilliant.
42:46This big bench that's extended the table usage, right?
42:50And I'm assuming because there's a fantastic projector screen that time, you can turn it around and everyone's engaged.
42:57Yes.
42:57There's no bad seat in this house.
42:59There's no bad seat.
43:01It's quite a statement to put the sort of flowery wallpaper in.
43:05That's the only thing for me personally, a tiny bit of disconnect.
43:08I like the wallpaper.
43:10I'm just wondering what that is.
43:12Yeah.
43:12I don't know.
43:13Is it a fish?
43:13A fish with wings?
43:15Well, maybe it's a play on a helicopter.
43:19Come on, Leah.
43:19You did so brilliantly here.
43:21Let's ignore that bit.
43:22Yeah, we'll ignore that.
43:31I really hope that both Kelly and Michelle walk in there and see the vision and really appreciate what I've
43:37tried to accomplish in there.
43:38It's really clever if I do say so myself.
43:43Oh, wow.
43:44This is Duranne's room.
43:46She's boxed in all the fridges.
43:48Fridges.
43:49Getting rid of the fridges is a bonus.
43:52The whole room suddenly feels huge.
43:55I like the fact that it is an open space for everybody to be very inclusive for everybody.
44:01Do we need the squiggle across the wall and ceiling?
44:04I veer on the side of it's really not necessary because there's so much else here that is working quite
44:11well.
44:11But I think the issue here is that Duranne has gone down the path of a kind of 30s theme
44:18that she's justified to herself because there was a base here from the 1930s.
44:23And so we see the Art Deco round glass table, the lounger chair.
44:28Is that the most appropriate chair to use here because only one person can sit on that?
44:32You've got your little play area.
44:34I'm not sure about glass.
44:36That's going to get broken at some stage.
44:37That causes a hazard and military banks don't like hazards.
44:42In many ways this is a bit of a confusing room because there is a lot about it that is
44:47really clever.
44:48I love boxing in all the refrigerators and I love the way that she's laid out the room with this
44:53sort of very clear lounging area, very clear seating and dining area.
44:58What trips it up is then some of the material she's used.
45:01We can't use glass.
45:02It's dangerous.
45:10I think that the choices I made, the curation of things that I had all worked together within my style
45:16and the vibrancy
45:18of the room.
45:18So, yeah, no, I'm really happy with them.
45:20I'm really proud of what I've achieved.
45:25So different.
45:26Wow.
45:27Totally different feel.
45:28There's a very strong design statement.
45:30So I'm seeing that in the furniture.
45:32I'm seeing it in the colours.
45:34But somehow I don't feel comfortable.
45:37I don't know whether it's because it's not common roomy enough.
45:40I don't feel like I could actually just throw myself down on that sofa somehow.
45:44Or maybe it's because I personally can't bear a bean bag.
45:47What's your kind of gut feeling?
45:49I mean, I quite like a bean bag and I think the sailors will like a bean bag.
45:54However, even though this looks incredible, this area here is too luxurious.
46:01This is no disrespect to the sailors, but it's too fancy.
46:05They're not going to keep this nice.
46:07In the way that other rooms extended the kitchen, actually, here we've somehow lost space.
46:15Because although I can be behind here chopping and prepping, I am cut off from the rest of
46:21the room, even though the screen is see-through.
46:23I love this.
46:25I don't know how long this took.
46:26I do love this and I love the fact that he's brought that into the room.
46:31And then this huge table, which I can see the emphasis of playing.
46:34It's a great idea, isn't it?
46:36But the reality of it is, if two of you are playing table tennis, it is really annoying
46:41because of that ping-pong-pong.
46:42Oh, sorry.
46:43That was my ball.
46:43You know, and also if I just want to eat my food here.
46:46And you can't actually play table tennis because there's a wall right behind you.
46:50The table needs to be here.
46:52If I pull this table over here because I actually want to have a go at playing dot, the lighting
46:56feature is going to get completely in the way and also now just be illuminating a bit
47:00of carpet.
47:02So this is in the wrong place.
47:03It feels so much like if this was a one-bedroom apartment, it would be perfect.
47:09I think that's always the tricky thing for our designers, you know, it's not just creating
47:12a space that looks nice.
47:13It has to work for the function we require of it.
47:19While Michelle and Kelly make their decision.
47:21Oh, wow.
47:22Hey.
47:23I've been busy.
47:24The recruits get their first look at their transformed nest eggs.
47:28So you know if it's already cooked?
47:31Where's our food?
47:33How do you want that?
47:35Oh.
47:36Lovely.
47:37Really nice, isn't it?
47:38I like it.
47:38Inspiring you to cook a little bit more.
47:40Oh, definitely more, yeah.
47:41A custom looker's board.
47:43That's brilliant.
47:47Do you think this might lure you out of your rooms a bit more?
47:50Come and hang out in here?
47:51Yeah.
47:52Yeah.
47:53Thank you so much for all of this.
47:55This is absolutely amazing.
47:56You're very welcome.
47:57I've had the most fun with it.
48:02Back at the studio, the designers are about to find out who has won standout space and who
48:08is up for elimination.
48:11Ahoy, me hearties.
48:14Well done, all of you.
48:16Personally, I thought your wonderful nest eggs were Foxtrot, Alpha, Bravo, fab.
48:22But it's not me you need to impress.
48:23Let's welcome our design drill sergeants, Michelle and Dame Kelly-Ho.
48:28Woo!
48:30Hi, everyone.
48:31Hi.
48:32I've never been on a military base before, so I really didn't know what to expect or what
48:37you would give me with a mistake.
48:39But it was so wonderful to see all your different ways of transforming blank spaces into places
48:45that gave these young sailors a real sense of belonging.
48:48Well, I have been in the military, and I know how dull a lot of the rooms are, but these
48:54spaces are there to create a sense of enjoyment, bringing people together, fun.
48:59So, which room is being awarded standout space?
49:02Well, there was one space that we both absolutely agreed totally nailed the brief.
49:09So congratulations to Leah.
49:18We really loved how you centred your design around a place for people to eat and cook together.
49:25That's such a powerful way to bring people together.
49:28So, loved it.
49:29Oh, thank you so much.
49:32Yeah, I thought it was stunning.
49:34I thought it was everything that the sailors would love.
49:37It was wonderful.
49:38Oh, thank you so much.
49:40Also going through is Emily.
49:44Well done.
49:44We really loved how you extended the kitchen with also the layering of details.
49:49So, congratulations.
49:51I was blown away with how much I like black.
49:55That's it.
49:58Ajit.
49:58We thought your space was really super user friendly.
50:02You'd really understood who you were designing for.
50:04Well done.
50:05Thank you so much.
50:06The sofa is rather comfortable.
50:07I did have a try.
50:08Amazing.
50:10So that does mean that Duran, Johnny and Sophie, I would like to see you on the sofa.
50:16Congratulations everyone else and we'll see you next week.
50:38I feel very nervous because it makes me feel like I wasn't understanding the brief.
50:41I want this so badly.
50:43I really don't want to leave.
50:44I think it would be weird not to feel disappointed in this situation because you put so much into
50:49it.
50:49So, yeah, I'm curious to see what Michelle has to say.
50:53I have no idea what Michelle could say to me.
50:56I was proud of the design I created.
50:58I felt like I nailed the brief.
51:00So, interested to see what she has to say
51:03and, you know, hopefully I can learn from her.
51:06Hi. Hello.
51:11You three are all here on the sofa,
51:13actually, for very, very similar reasons,
51:16even though your spaces probably couldn't have been more different.
51:20So, for me, it's an issue of appropriateness
51:23and clinging too tightly to a theme.
51:27So, Sophie, we were really intrigued
51:29with your starting point of the game,
51:31that you'd done a load of research.
51:33What I don't understand is where the pub bit came from.
51:37Because are you aware that these sailors
51:40cannot actually drink alcohol in their mess rooms?
51:43I obviously didn't want to create a pub.
51:45It was more about that feeling of being relaxed
51:49and being at ease
51:50and being able to socialise with a lot of people at once.
51:53I kind of just, I don't know, I wanted to make a cool space
51:56and, to me, that was a really cool kind of vibe,
51:59is this sort of old-school charm.
52:02You are not creating theme park rooms here.
52:05You are creating rooms for real people.
52:08What's quite fascinating there, Johnny...
52:10Yeah.
52:10Your room was beautiful.
52:13I mean, what a delicious room to walk into
52:16with that, you know, designer sofa,
52:18the pale blue, all the circles and everything.
52:21I mean, we walked in and we're like,
52:23oh, my goodness, look!
52:25That!
52:27Yes.
52:28What was your inspiration behind this?
52:31I was inspired a lot by circles, weirdly,
52:33and this kind of idea of roundness,
52:35bringing that kind of enveloping feeling and calm.
52:38And then I found this really cool sofa that was also round
52:41and then the beanbags.
52:42And on the way was like,
52:44ah, this actually works really well
52:45with things that I, you know, enjoy
52:47and things that I would want.
52:49So all the thinking, the concept, the ideas, loving it.
52:53The bit where I start to get a bit nervous
52:55is when it comes a little bit too much about you,
52:59what you like.
52:59Because I got the sense that you found that sofa,
53:02which was absolutely beautiful,
53:04and then everything sort of rippled out from that.
53:07And you didn't maybe stop enough to go,
53:08is this sofa the right sofa
53:10for a load of 18 to 25-year-old trainee sailors?
53:14Yeah.
53:15When I first walked on, I thought, wow.
53:17I mean, it looked fantastic.
53:19It really did.
53:19It was a lovely design.
53:21If I had an apartment, I would have been,
53:22oh, yeah, just come and design that for me.
53:24You know, lovely sofa.
53:25But it was maybe not practical
53:27for the type of young people
53:29that are going to use that on a day-to-day basis.
53:32Perfect segue to Joanne.
53:34Right.
53:34There was so much that worked in your room.
53:37The issue, though, was, again,
53:39you had this beautiful 30s theme,
53:42which then I feel dictated your choice of furniture.
53:46And they dictated the round coffee tables.
53:50But also, we have that beautiful glass-topped games table,
53:54which neither of us were going to go anywhere near
53:57to try and lift the glass up to get the games out.
54:00It's just going to get broken.
54:02I took some inspiration from products
54:04that were, you know, being made around that time.
54:07But I didn't feel that it held me hostage.
54:09At least maybe it seemed like that.
54:11But just from a very practical level,
54:14thinking about the materials,
54:15they weren't appropriate for the people
54:17that would be using it.
54:19I was 18...
54:20Well, a month before, I was 18 before I joined,
54:22and I looked at it from that point of view.
54:24If I was in that space, would I go in and say,
54:27oh, yeah, this is great.
54:28You know, oh, love it, thanks so much.
54:31Watch the TV, switch off.
54:33Yeah.
54:34Spit and polish, please.
54:35Spit and polish.
54:36LAUGHTER
54:39I think you did what you had to do,
54:42and you did follow the brief.
54:43It's the materials that let you down on my side.
54:46So, Sophie, I think you started
54:48with what could have been a really strong concept,
54:51but allowed yourself to get distracted.
54:54Yeah.
54:55Jovan, I think your space actually did work.
54:59Everything was in the right place,
55:00but your theme meant that some of the pieces
55:03were just inappropriate.
55:04They weren't right for the people that were using it.
55:08Johnny, I think, again, it's a question of distraction.
55:10You got distracted by maybe what you love
55:13or that brilliant sofa that you found,
55:15but it led you off down the wrong path.
55:20But ultimately, biggest lesson
55:22is who you are designing for.
55:25Is my room fulfilling its function
55:28in service to the user?
55:31However you decide to define them,
55:34and it's got to be practical.
55:36I don't have to like it, but it has to work.
55:41So, for that reason,
55:43the person that will be leaving us this week...
55:53..is Johnny.
55:55I'm so sorry.
55:56What a beautiful room,
55:58but it just wasn't a room for our sailors at all.
56:03Thank you for all the advice.
56:04Honestly, it means a lot.
56:06Thank you, guys.
56:07But I think you've got the commission
56:07to redesign Kelly's apartment.
56:09I'll be in touch.
56:11Honestly, it was brilliant.
56:12It looks wonderful,
56:13and it's such a shame
56:14that it just wasn't practical,
56:16because you're a really great designer.
56:20We all would have moved in.
56:21We all would have moved in
56:23to a gorgeous apartment.
56:24Thank you so much.
56:25Honestly, it's been an amazing experience.
56:27I'm so grateful.
56:29I'm absolutely gutted.
56:31I'm really gutted.
56:32I don't want to go home.
56:33Thank you, Michelle.
56:34Oh, welcome.
56:36This experience to me has just meant everything.
56:38I can be creative
56:40and just proud of that
56:43and what I've achieved.
56:46I'm super sad to see Johnny go this week.
56:48He's a really talented designer,
56:50and he did create an absolutely beautiful room,
56:54but it wasn't the right room
56:56to be a sailor's mess deck.
56:59Next time, the designers aim for the sky.
57:02I'm actually thinking I might not like heights.
57:04That may be an issue.
57:05Yeah.
57:06As they create aspirational studio apartments.
57:09Love, love, love.
57:10For young renters in Leeds.
57:12Your image is very like Wednesday.
57:15Yeah.
57:15But actually, you're more like a bank holiday Monday.
