00:04Peter Sluzak has come home after his shift guarding a parking lot in Prague.
00:09He says he truly enjoys his job. Just a few years ago he had no home to return to
00:14and no regular job to come home from. Sluzak used to live with his mother. When
00:20she died he lost the apartment they had shared. At the age of 40 he suddenly found
00:25himself sleeping on the streets.
00:31It was a lot of difficult to connect with me because I worked for my whole life
00:42and I couldn't, I couldn't, I couldn't, I couldn't, I couldn't, I couldn't, I couldn't
00:48become a home owner, so I had to work a lot on this.
01:04Sluzak recently took part in an unusual Czech trial that gave homeless people the lump sum of 100.000 Czech
01:10crowns, about 4.000 euros, no strings attached.
01:14It was conducted by the project New Leaf Czechia and sought to explore new ways to address homelessness.
01:20100 people were selected for the trial and divided into groups. One group received cash payments.
01:27Another worked closely with social workers. And a third got both as part of a comparative analysis.
01:33New Leaf Czechia says the findings challenge long-held stereotypes about homeless people.
01:40Our findings totally broke down these stereotypes.
01:46And the data revealed some behaviour of people experiencing homelessness leading to exit the street.
01:55And as well they didn't prove our participants spent or used the money to some addictive substances.
02:08They mainly used the money on housing, food and clothes.
02:15Homelessness is on the rise across Europe.
02:17The Czech researchers hope their findings could reshape how governments respond to people living on the streets.
02:23For many participants in the trial, money alone did not solve all their problems.
02:28Finding stable work and housing remained difficult.
02:31Social worker Nikola Fidlerova worked closely with Petr Sluzak after he joined the project.
02:36What is the name of Petr Sluzak?
02:38Petr is very active and tried to find himself to find work.
02:45What was the first time not a good thing, because it became a message that he was given to the
02:59people of the street.
03:00It became a message that he was given to the people of the city,
03:01that he was given to the people of the city,
03:03a message that he provided the people of the city,
03:03which is a nice and unique addition to the people of the city.
03:10But the promise of work soon turned into exploitation.
03:16A po měsíci práce vlastně nevěděl žádný jiný peníze.
03:20Tím, že stále musel chodit do té práce, kde pracoval, tuším, že 10 hodin denně,
03:25opravdu těžký manuální práce,
03:27takže ani nedostal do ruky pracovní smlouvu,
03:30takže vlastně nevěděl, na co má nárok, na co nemá nárok, jestli je platná.
03:36Významný, Sluzák způsob a znala jako podležitost.
03:41Jeho představí v závěcí změnila hodině.
03:44Vždy, je to nejlepší měsíc.
03:46V nárok nejlepší Čechy, byl byl způsobem učený stát.
03:51V prvních věců ještě, je to velké první část, kde dělá.
03:55I am sopokojený.
03:58I'm very glad that I can use this house and that I don't want to be on the street,
04:05that I can work and be a normal person.
04:28When I saw someone like this, it just happened.
