More and more people in Europe have nowhere safe to call home. How is homelessness defined across the continent and what is fuelling the problem?

00:00 More and more people in Europe have nowhere safe to call home.
00:08 Evidence suggests homelessness across the EU as a whole has more than doubled since
00:12 2009, with only Denmark and Finland making progress.
00:17 Its most visible form is rough sleeping, but the profile of Europe's homeless is evolving.
00:22 In addition to those affected by economic hardship or physical and mental health issues,
00:27 in escaping domestic violence, and young people with no proper access to housing, so-called
00:32 couch surfers also make up the numbers.
00:35 The lack of affordable and good quality housing plays a major part in all of this.
00:40 In 2022, almost one in ten people in the EU spent more than 40% of their income on accommodation.
00:48 Despite being enshrined in the European pillar of social rights as a fundamental human right,
00:54 many people still struggle to put a roof over their heads.
