00:02:38This homestead is one of the most meaningful things I've ever tried to achieve.
00:02:44When we first looked at this property, it was a love for a sight.

00:06:56Our main goals for this homestead were to be more self-reliant and sufficient and secure.

00:09:25you can get all excited and make plans and even start a big home.
00:09:29But everything's at risk until you manage that property so that it can defend itself when

00:09:48We started off calling this our practice garden just because we had really no experience growing

00:18:57Due to its native dry climate, California has become one of the top states in the country
00:19:03to see widespread wildfires with an average annual property loss of over $117 billion between 2017 and 2021.
00:19:14The deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California's history, the Camp Fire of 2018 consumed over 150,000 acres and
00:19:25left 85 dead.
00:19:27The mountainous regions of Northern California are especially at risk due to katabatic winds that fan flames,
00:19:34quickly consuming ladder fuels such as dry brush and dead trees, leading to an uphill wildfire spread of almost 15
00:19:43miles per hour.
00:19:46So what advice do you have for us?
00:19:48So best advice is we look at the defensible space.
00:19:51So 100 foot is what the state of California requires.
00:19:54Oh, wow.
00:19:56Within that 100 feet, ideally you have five feet around your structure to remove any type of vegetation.
00:20:01So we look at bare mineral soil, pavers, gravel, anything that won't sustain combustion for it to creeping up against
00:20:08the house.
00:20:09From the 5 to 30, we want to reduce those fuels as best we can.
00:20:13So any dead, dying grasses, brush, sticks, limbs, remove them out of that 30-foot zone.
00:20:20That's a plane.
00:20:21That's one of our air techs.
00:20:22So there's a fire right here somewhere that he's tracking?

00:25:24So, one of the biggest red flags that I saw during the attempted evacuation was this chicken coop run area.

00:53:51something so serious for this location that things like this are just yeah, it's it's too risky.

01:19:44firebreak which also doubles as space for a centralized garden covered by a mobile shade system
01:19:51and with the addition of a 2500 gallon water tank their water supply has also doubled providing
01:19:58ample water for both growing crops and fighting fires you changed our lives here oh like you really
01:20:05did you came here and you just breathed new life into the place being here you showed us that in
01:20:11different ways that like you believed in us and you were encouraging and you had good advice and you
01:20:15showed us how to use tools and there's just so many different things that now that you've been here like
01:20:20we feel more confident we feel more safe and that's everything to us right now because we were just
01:20:26like really beaten down for a while so thank you misty seriously you're welcome yeah

01:20:43to find a place

01:22:22payoff
01:22:23and feel that reward and it's all worth it
01:22:32since the rainies left we've been pretty busy getting ready for the house we have a working
01:22:39kitchen sink and a toilet now which we're really excited about all the while maintaining the homestead
01:22:46the chickens are doing really well ever since the chicken coop was modified we haven't had to worry
01:22:54as much about the heat now we're getting about maybe eight nine eggs a day the goats ate the grass
01:23:01down
01:23:01really quickly they even took care of the poison oak it's really fantastic being able to know how much
01:23:07water we have at any given moment it is critical the berm being super close to the house this spring
01:23:14we're
01:23:14going to be able to grow a lot of food and have it really close by now that the rainies
01:23:20have been
01:23:21here i feel like a sense of confidence that i didn't have before i feel great about saying this
