00:00My smile and my teeth mean everything to me.
00:03I think they're the first thing people see when you're out there in the world.
00:06We want to make sure that these teeth look like her teeth when she first came in
00:11and have that character.
00:19Hi, I'm Carly Whitwell.
00:21I'm the Senior Director of Editorial at Refinery29
00:23and I'm here to get porcelain restoration veneers
00:26by the Dr. Andy at Eppa Aesthetic in Beverly Hills.
00:30Will it be worth the time?
00:32Will it be worth the money?
00:33And will I recommend it to my friends?
00:35Let's head in.
00:41A little bit about my teeth journey.
00:43I love to smile.
00:44I'm always being told that I have such a friendly face
00:47but one of the things about my teeth is that they're quite small.
00:50When this opportunity came up, I said, I'd love to try.
00:53It's a big life change.
00:54My family and friends were all talking about it nonstop this week
00:57saying that it could totally change my face.
00:59The good news is I found out they're actually not going to be shaving down my teeth today
01:03because I have smaller teeth so that makes me feel quite excited.
01:06I hope that the result will be my smile just better
01:09so maybe a little bit bigger, a little bit brighter
01:12but still my best self at heart.
01:15My name is Dr. Andy Jean Miro and I am a dentist at Eppa Aesthetic L.A.
01:20I've been a dentist for about 10 years now.
01:23I graduated from NYU Dental School in 2014
01:26and I joined Eppa Aesthetic in New York City
01:30and now I'm out here in L.A.
01:33and I work in our L.A. office.
01:35Porcelain veneers can be made out of two different materials.
01:38The first material is feldspathic porcelain.
01:42This is the process that we hand layer ceramic.
01:47Another way that we can make veneers is using a resin or a bonding material.
01:53That will tend to chip or pick up stain a little bit more than your typical porcelain veneer.
01:59So we tend to prefer porcelain over bonding.
02:02Typically this can range from $800 to $5,000 per tooth.
02:08So it definitely can get expensive
02:10but I always tell patients good dentistry is expensive
02:14but bad dentistry will be more expensive
02:17because you'll have to pay to redo it over and over.
02:22Hi Dr. Andy.
02:23Hi love. How are you?
02:24I'm good. I had a great day.
02:25Love.
02:26We took some records.
02:27We took x-rays.
02:29We took some digital scans which I know you thought was really cool.
02:31That was my favorite part of the morning.
02:33Talk to me about veneers with Gen Z.
02:36They really had a resurgence.
02:37What are you seeing out there?
02:38I think I attribute a lot of that to COVID.
02:41So because during COVID we were on Zooms
02:44and we're really looking at ourselves for the first time in a really macro sense.
02:49So Zoom was the thing that really made this explode.
02:53On TikTok people are taking a burr and drilling the whole tooth down
02:58and then they're putting crowns on people's mouths.
03:00The problem with that is once you've removed tooth, that's it.
03:04You don't regrow tooth.
03:05Our job is to make sure that we're doing it the least invasive
03:09and you're going to see that today with your procedure.
03:11You're the perfect candidate for this.
03:13We are putting these temporary ones on for three weeks.
03:16What happens in the interim?
03:17I'm going on vacation in the interim.
03:19Oh, you're going to be smiling your life away on vacation.
03:22You're not even going to realize you have temporaries.
03:24They're going to look at you.
03:25They're going to say something looks a little different.
03:27Did you bleach your teeth?
03:28Yes.
03:29Something looks different by you but they won't be able to put your finger on it.
03:32But the purpose of the temporaries, it's like test driving the car before you get it.
03:37So we have a whole appointment tomorrow where you're going to come in.
03:40You're not numb.
03:41We're going to take some photos and we're going to look at it.
03:43We're going to look at the design and we're going to say,
03:45do we like this?
03:46Do we want to make any changes?
03:48After we've made all those decisions, that's when our lab will get started.
03:52Let's go see the lab.
03:53I want you to see where the magic is.
03:55Let's do it.
03:55Let's do it.
03:57The first day of prep, I'm typically designing what I see for Carly.
04:02The gaps are closed.
04:04The teeth are a little longer.
04:06They still look like her teeth, just a little bit better.
04:11Carly and I started this journey with a FaceTime consultation.
04:15We were able to treatment plan four restorations.
04:19We are going to use porcelain veneers to truly transform the way that her smile
04:26is.
04:26The goal of this is to make sure that we close the gaps and we align the teeth so that
04:34it makes her whole smile look better.
04:37During the process, we don't really have to drill her tooth.
04:42We're really getting the teeth ready to be able to receive the veneers.
04:47A big part of this is making temporaries that she will go home and wear for the next two-ish
04:54weeks while our final restorations are being made.
05:00Now we have taken a final impression.
05:03That final impression goes to our in-house team and that is what they will make the final
05:09teeth on.
05:09So you'll notice towards the end of the procedure that we put those teeth in and we really carve
05:15them to look like teeth.
05:17That is our goal.
05:18We want to make sure that these teeth are individual even though the temporaries are attached.
05:24We want to make sure that they look like her teeth when she first came in and have that
05:30character of her teeth.
05:33Take a peek.
05:34Ah!
05:35Oh my god.
05:36Oh my god.
05:38Oh my god.
05:38Oh my god.
05:39We did it.
05:40You did it.
05:40I'm so excited.
05:41You did it.
05:41No, I did nothing.
05:43You did great.
05:43Now that you have this amazing new smile, we are going to be a little restricted in what
05:49we're eating.
05:49We cannot bite into anything with your front teeth.
05:52My rule of thumb is anything that will stain your white shirt will stain your temporary.
05:57As much as you can, use a straw.
05:59You're going to cut everything and put it all the way in the back of your mouth.
06:02And don't bite into anything.
06:04Okay.
06:05Tomorrow we're going to check the way you function.
06:07We're going to check the aesthetics.
06:08We're going to make sure we like it all.
06:09And we'll dial it all in.
06:11That's it.
06:12You'll do great.
06:13Alright, have a good night.
06:14Thank you so much.
06:14Rest up and we'll make it all perfect.
06:16Wait, I can work out as normal and everything?
06:18Yeah, live your best life.
06:20Typically, we'll have the patient come back the next day after we've done our prep.
06:25The goal of this appointment is to truly understand what does it look like?
06:30What does it feel like?
06:32And are there any changes that the patient wants to make?
06:37Hey, Dr. Andy.
06:38Hey!
06:38It's been like 25 days.
06:40I was counting down 25 days with these.
06:43You did pretty good in the temporaries.
06:45I found it a little funky at first.
06:47That first night was sore.
06:48I ordered some soup for dinner.
06:49And then, yeah, I think just finding the last three weeks just trying to go out for dinner
06:53and chew, like, mm, asking me to drink my red wine with a straw on vacation was, I got
06:58some funny looks, but it was worth it.
07:01It mostly just felt uncomfortable the few days and I would say, like, now I kind of just
07:04forgot about it.
07:05I always say temporaries are hard, so this part can be very easy.
07:09Today is going to be really easy because we have your final teeth.
07:16There are about 20 hours that went into hand layering these beautiful teeth.
07:23Today, we are going to take your temporaries off, try everything in, bond them all in, and
07:30that's it.
07:36So right now you can see I'm removing the temporaries.
07:41We are going to try in each restoration.
07:45We try these restorations in with water.
07:47That allows us to see the true color of the ceramic.
07:51So if at this point I felt like we needed to make the color a little brighter, if we had
07:58to make any changes, I can take our case and go to the laboratory and make those adjustments.
08:03One of the biggest checkpoints, and this is part of putting the teeth in, typically we
08:09will try in half of our temporaries versus our finals.
08:14And we want to make sure that these things line up.
08:17We are adding etch to the teeth.
08:20What this is doing is opening up the porosities in the teeth to be able to allow the next step
08:28which is the bonding agent to infiltrate into all those little pores and then sit there.
08:35That bonding agent will create an adhesive structure for our cement, which is inside of our veneer,
08:42to then adhere to the tooth.
08:44So as soon as we hit it with that curing light, the material becomes hard and it's fixed to the
08:50tooth.
08:51That allows us to then go in with our little in-between piece of metal.
08:55And that will allow us to clean the in-betweens.
08:59And then we will use our curing lights to fully cure and set the material into place.
09:04So these last steps, I want to make sure that where the tooth meets the gum is flat and that
09:11there's no areas
09:12for plaque to be picking up or any stain or tartar.
09:17It's time for the reveal!
09:19Okay, ready?
09:20Okay.
09:22I'm dying!
09:24Oh my god!
09:25They look so...
09:26Oh my god!
09:27They look real!
09:28They look real!
09:30I feel so excited because I think the teeth look just like my teeth.
09:34I would 1000% recommend getting porcelain veneers to anyone who wants to change their smile
09:39or make it a little better.
09:41It feels like myself.
09:43It feels like my own teeth.
09:45And I just can't wait to smile even more.
09:47When you have veneers, it's even more important for you to be seeing your dentist every three
09:52to four months for a checkup and a cleaning, wearing that retainer or night guard, and then
09:58most importantly, having an electric toothbrush.
10:01That is key to making sure her gums stay healthy for a really long time.
10:07And that is the goal for Carly to make sure that not only does this look good, but it lasts
10:15a really long time.
10:17Hi everyone, it's Carly.
10:19It's officially been two weeks since I got my porcelain veneers and I feel like I've had
10:24them forever.
10:25I literally cannot stop smiling.
10:27I feel like I have lipstick on my teeth.
10:29No, let's ignore that.
10:31I had been worried when I was going into it because a lot of my family and friends, they
10:35said, you don't need veneers.
10:37You have beautiful teeth.
10:38Why would you change your smile?
10:39And what I loved about this experience with Dr. Andy is that she didn't change my smile
10:43at all.
10:43She just brought out my smile and made it a little bit better.
10:47My teeth here are not so big.
10:49They match the rest of my teeth.
10:51People have actually been like, look different.
10:53Did you do your hair or did you get your teeth whitened?
10:56And then I just have to tell them, well, I actually got four veneers here.
10:59I think they say it takes three weeks to start a habit and maybe three weeks to get used
11:03to something.
11:03So they absolutely just feel like my own teeth.
11:06I will say when I first looked at myself, I just, I couldn't stop smiling.
11:09I was so excited.
11:11I just was beaming and I think it even affected my confidence a little bit as well because
11:16it just feels like me, but just like sort of a little, a bit shinier version of me.
11:21Emotionally, it was a bit of a roller coaster because you are changing your smile and people
11:26say, you know, you can get bad veneers and you absolutely can.
11:29We've all seen that on the internet.
11:31But for me, the fact that Dr. Andy walked me through every single step of the process
11:35and said, we can stop at any time or pull back or fix what you like was just so, so
11:40helpful
11:40because we could make it my own smile.
