00:08:37Do
00:08:40You
00:08:44It's not where I want to be
00:08:49Are you where you want to be
00:08:53Yeah
00:08:57Ha
00:09:18I always thought I would wait to tell you everything
00:09:21when we were finally back together.
00:09:24That it'd just be a story on the porch
00:09:26after the sun went down.
00:09:29When we could barely see each other.
00:09:32But I have to tell you now.
00:09:34Not everything.
00:09:36I can't face everything.
00:09:39This is most of it, but all of it,
00:09:41it was always about getting back to you.
00:09:44What happened on the bridge,
00:09:46I didn't think I'd survive.
00:09:52And I woke up in a military hospital.
00:09:55An army found me, a force of thousands,
00:09:59protecting a working, hidden city of hundreds of thousands.
00:10:04Security and secrecy above all,
00:10:06that's the army's code,
00:10:08so no one can leave, ever.
00:10:11The city governs itself,
00:10:13completely separate from the military,
00:10:14but it follows that one rule,
00:10:17that law from outside the walls.
00:10:20The people they rescue,
00:10:22they work in the outskirts,
00:10:24killing walkers for energy,
00:10:26or growing food,
00:10:27or managing the water of the waste.
00:10:34After six years of it,
00:10:36to get into the city,
00:10:37away from the army,
00:10:38from the outskirts,
00:10:41they're called consignees.
00:10:42I was one of them,
00:10:44but I was never gonna go in.
00:10:45I was gonna get away.
00:10:46I was gonna get back to you.
00:10:48God damn it.
00:10:49I was.
00:11:16Could have used the other hand, huh?
00:11:24I came down here,
00:11:25because I spoke with Major General Bill.
00:11:28About me?
00:11:29Yeah.
00:11:30You are lucky you got a friend in high places.
00:11:33You're my friend, huh?
00:11:35Rick, I lobby the head of what is likely
00:11:37the most powerful military on the planet.
00:11:40On your behalf,
00:11:42I am possibly the best friend you ever had.
00:11:46What happened to your forehead?
00:11:48Something like you happened.
00:11:50Someone who may be better for my program.
00:11:54You think that staying out here
00:11:55gives you a better chance
00:11:56of getting away?
00:11:58It doesn't.
00:11:59It just gives you
00:12:01another chance to die.
00:12:03You may have noticed,
00:12:04but I want to see that happen.
00:12:07I'm going back to work.
00:12:12Rick, did you hear what I got?
00:12:14You don't have to do this anymore.
00:12:19First time I tried,
00:12:21the army didn't know what to do with me.
00:12:23Because no one tries to escape.
00:12:25No one wants to.
00:12:27But they put me in jail,
00:12:29kill me.
00:12:30A lieutenant colonel named Okafor,
00:12:33he convinced them to keep me a consignee,
00:12:35and I kept trying to escape.
00:12:37But I couldn't.
00:12:38I couldn't get back to you.
00:12:40I kept trying to get away.
00:12:42So they put me on a leash
00:12:44when we went out into the world.
00:12:46I couldn't get away.
00:12:47I couldn't get back to you.
00:12:50I was trapped.
00:13:18I was trapped.
00:13:24Okafor protected me because he said he saw something in me.
00:13:28He wanted me to join his program, to join their army, to use my life for them.
00:13:35He put it this way.
00:13:36I keep on telling you, people like us, there's no escape for the living.
00:13:48I left the uniform in your apartment. It's time to accept things for what they are.
00:13:54It cost your hand last time, next time it's your life. Do something with it.
00:14:35I should thank you instead of throwing glasses at you.
00:14:42Why?
00:14:44You showed me how I can't get away.
00:14:53Yeah, five, one.
00:14:55I'll be in six, start over.
00:15:03I'm sorry.
00:15:14I'm sorry.
00:15:31Shit, man, I heard about it, but damn, you really did that shit for real, huh?
00:15:38Hey, Esteban.
00:15:42Yeah.
00:15:42Can I touch it?
00:15:45Nah, just playing jokes, man.
00:15:47Okay, so for like two years, you didn't even talk to me or anybody, but I kept talking
00:15:52to you.
00:15:54Took a while, but we got something now.
00:15:57We got something, man, so that hidden city, the only thing you probably see is like Alcatraz.
00:16:05For us consignees, though, we see that good life, man.
00:16:09You know, they got air conditioning, man, air conditioning.
00:16:12I mean, no more swamp ass, you feel me?
00:16:17I mean, look, Rick, it's a big day, man.
00:16:19I'm telling you this shit because this is my last day out here working utilities.
00:16:23As of tomorrow, I'm going to be in there.
00:16:27Deputy manager of Water and Power of Ward 3.
00:16:30After six long years, man, my consignment is over.
00:16:35I'm about to be inside the walls, bitch.
00:16:38A citizen.
00:16:39I should have got you a gift.
00:16:41Come on, Rick, what the hell are you going to get me?
00:16:43A scout?
00:16:49Whatever the hell this is.
00:16:52Yeah, well, it's life, man.
00:16:57At least this Okafor dude is going to stop trying to make you into a soldier and shit.
00:17:04For real?
00:17:06Still?
00:17:07I mean, even after you...
00:17:11Shit, man, you might as well sign up just to get them off your back.
00:17:15You know, and then make your next move when you're out there scavenging for twine or some shit.
00:17:23Hey, there's one thing I haven't told you, though.
00:17:26I got a girl, man, on the inside.
00:17:29She's a journalist.
00:17:32Yeah, she was doing a story on, like, water management.
00:17:45Never seen you here before.
00:18:04You joined.
00:18:09I did.
00:18:14This...
00:18:15is millet.
00:18:24It isn't exactly another country,
00:18:26but if I can find the right one, it could change things.
00:18:38Sir, yes, sir!
00:18:43Is that your choice?
00:18:49Is this the end of it and the start of something else?
00:18:53It's the end.
00:18:56And the start.
00:19:03Welcome to the CRM.
00:19:08I thought you were late.
00:19:12Yep, I am.
00:19:16Uh, well, I can't be, but I do eat here every day.
00:19:27Around this time?
00:19:29You're pretty eager, aren't you?
00:19:33Maybe you are, too.
00:19:34Oh, I'm not.
00:19:42Can I at least...
00:19:45Calming.
00:19:48Calming.
00:19:49Come on, Rick.
00:19:50Class is in session.
00:20:06It was a soldier.
00:20:08Yeah, he was.
00:20:11I was gonna hold this in a briefing room, but...
00:20:15What we're going to talk about, that would be neither safe nor appropriate.
00:20:21What the hell is this?
00:20:24You both have been training for a year.
00:20:26You're both soldiers now, but you don't actually think all of this was about you two just becoming soldiers.
00:20:33It's about you two becoming leaders.
00:20:36I am gonna help you become part of Force Command within the CRM.
00:20:42I tried to escape four times.
00:20:44Mm-hmm.
00:20:45I did this.
00:20:46I tried to kill you.
00:20:49Yes, but the two of you can help me change things from the inside.
00:20:54Sit.
00:20:56You both possess something I believe the CRM needs to become what it needs to be.
00:21:06Well, why does it need to be anything else?
00:21:08The city lives, it runs itself, the CRM runs the world outside.
00:21:12Everything is working where nothing else has.
00:21:14People can't leave.
00:21:16They're not free.
00:21:19No one's free.
00:21:21Not in this world, but we're alive.
00:21:23You are, and you're not supposed to be.
00:21:25The CRM designates people they find as A's and B's.
00:21:30A's have a strength.
00:21:32A's will die for what they believe in.
00:21:34People follow A's.
00:21:37The people we cross in the world, the few we bring in, they're classified as B's.
00:21:42Everyday people who are just trying to survive.
00:21:44B's get in, A's are sent away and killed.
00:21:48Except you two.
00:21:50Why?
00:21:51Me.
00:21:52The CRM needs to change.
00:21:55The CRM needs strong leaders to change them.
00:21:59Being the monster to fight the monsters, that can't last.
00:22:06And this is why I need the two of you.
00:22:08All the other secrets you'll receive when you move up the ranks, then you'll receive the
00:22:12Echelon briefing.
00:22:14Move up the ranks.
00:22:15The Echelon briefing?
00:22:16That's when you get all the info, the whys, the things 90% of our force doesn't know about
00:22:23more than 100% of our city doesn't.
00:22:25Do they want us to be leaders?
00:22:29Do they even know about this?
00:22:31Here, tonight, telling us about A's and B's and secret briefings?
00:22:37No.
00:22:38This is just me.
00:22:39I believe that A's will become soldiers, become leaders, are the only thing that could possibly
00:22:46change the CRM.
00:22:50So if we share with the higher-ups that you're saying these things?
00:22:54Uh-uh.
00:22:55Don't say we, Grimes.
00:22:59If I'm an A, if I think for myself, why do you even think I'm gonna go along with all
00:23:08of this?
00:23:10Because I believe if either one of you had a chance to save the world, you would.
00:23:14You'd have to.
00:23:16That book.
00:23:17Open it.
00:23:18Let's talk about the Cold War.
00:23:20He wanted to change things.
00:23:22Change the army without them even knowing it.
00:23:24And he wanted my help to do it.
00:23:28I'd play along, but it wasn't my fight.
00:23:31Lukia, you're obviously looking at this different than I am.
00:23:35I hear you throw this wee shit around again, I'll end you.
00:23:39And you the one?
00:23:41The one who cut him up here?
00:23:44I shot at him.
00:23:45Just missed.
00:23:46Guess I didn't.
00:23:48You gonna shoot me too, Thorne?
00:23:50Yeah.
00:23:51I was in the South African Navy.
00:23:53Served in submarines.
00:23:55Used to play poker on the subs.
00:23:57I was good.
00:23:59No.
00:24:00I was great.
00:24:01I wanted to see how great.
00:24:03They have the best tournaments in the world in Las Vegas, so I went there to try my luck.
00:24:07I didn't play a single hand before the lights went out, which tells me my luck is apparently shit.
00:24:13He found me in the Atlantic Ocean.
00:24:16I was half dead.
00:24:18I tried to kill him so I could stay there.
00:24:21It's my fourth time trying to get back since the start.
00:24:24Or the end.
00:24:30I know why you've done what you've done.
00:24:33Trying to escape.
00:24:35Taking your hand off.
00:24:37Same reason I had.
00:24:42There's someone you love out there.
00:24:46I've accepted that I'm not gonna see my someone again because I know that person doesn't want me to die.
00:24:52And that is probably why I just grazed Okafor's face.
00:24:56Somewhere deep inside I knew I wasn't making it back to Cape Town alive.
00:25:00If I should at you, Grimes, I won't miss.
00:25:04I won't graze you either.
00:25:06I don't give a shit about what game you play.
00:25:09You heard what he said should have happened to us.
00:25:12This is all I have left.
00:25:15The rest, the life before, it's all gone.
00:25:18This is all you have left too.
00:25:21The person you were trying to get back to...
00:25:23But she's not gone.
00:25:27They're not gone.
00:25:28She isn't. They aren't. We are.
00:25:35You want my help? Just ask.
00:25:42Come on.
00:25:43Come on.
00:25:46Let's grab a drink before we kill each other.
00:26:04Early on, the army had found two other cities.
00:26:08Portland and Omaha.
00:26:10Not as big, not as sophisticated, and not keeping themselves secret.
00:26:15All three cities became an alliance, even though two don't know where the third is.
00:26:21The world is so much bigger than we knew, Michonne.
00:26:25So much better, and so much worse.
00:26:27Life surrounded by death.
00:26:30All in one view.
00:26:34Isn't that right?
00:26:36Major General Peel.
00:26:38Yes, sir. It is.
00:26:41Have a seat, Grimes.
00:26:49Another thing we have over Portland and Omaha, in our alliance of three, is unlike them, we're fairly well hidden
00:26:55without much effort.
00:26:56I saw what federal forces did to Atlanta.
00:27:01They used napalm, sir.
00:27:05Monsters.
00:27:07Worse than the Delts.
00:27:09But this force, as the Pennsylvania National Guard at the time, we stopped them.
00:27:16How, sir?
00:27:19Sacrifice.
00:27:21Luck.
00:27:22Calm.
00:27:25And Okafor.
00:27:27Okafor, sir.
00:27:30He was with their Air Force.
00:27:31He was supposed to bomb the city, but instead, he bombed 4,000 Marines, staging at Lincoln Financial Field.
00:27:39He switched sides.
00:27:43Well, I did too.
00:27:45In a way.
00:27:47You and Thorne never would have been allowed into the CRM.
00:27:50You wouldn't even have been let into consignment.
00:27:54But Okafor made a compelling argument.
00:27:59Let me ask you a question, Grimes.
00:28:01I don't expect you to answer, and you don't have to.
00:28:04I'm just gonna ask it and look in your eyes.
00:28:06Yes, sir.
00:28:09Is Okafor up to anything I should know about?
00:28:14No.
00:28:21No.
00:28:25Good, Rick.
00:28:28You asked me how we won, how we survived.
00:28:30How did you survive?
00:28:33Sacrifice.
00:28:35You tried to escape four times.
00:28:39Why are you here?
00:28:41Do you want to kill?
00:28:43To die?
00:28:46Or is all this just another attempt to escape?
00:28:52Look in my eyes, sir.
00:28:55You tell me.
00:29:04I'm just gonna share the view with you for a while, Grimes.
00:29:09Everything was about secrets.
00:29:12The army kept the city a secret at all costs.
00:29:15Everything the army did was secret to the city.
00:29:18And then there were the soldiers with those blood-red stripes, keeping what they did a secret to the whole
00:29:24force.
00:29:25Secrets on secrets.
00:29:27And the only thing I cared about was holding onto mine.
00:29:32Our latest modeling shows a tipping point.
00:29:38There's a reckoning coming.
00:29:45And it's coming soon.
00:29:48Maybe you're asking, why can't you just turn away?
00:29:59It's coming soon.
00:29:59Sometimes one person, sometimes two.
00:30:02They have the power, they have the responsibility to change everything.
00:30:08You'll see it.
00:30:10You'll face it.
00:30:11And I know you'll make the right choice.
00:30:16And at the final moment, you'll make the right choice.
00:30:31Oh, shit.
00:30:34Rick Grimes.
00:30:35Oh, shit.
00:30:37Esteban Garcia.
00:30:39Wait, is it Ward 3 Deputy Water Manager, Esteban Garcia?
00:30:43Hey, hey, it's Ward 3 Water Manager now, right?
00:30:45Hey, where's your consignment jacket?
00:30:47How the hell are you even here if it's not a furlough day?
00:30:52Oh, shit.
00:30:54You joined the CRM.
00:30:58What the fuck?
00:30:59The tunnel under this manhole.
00:31:02I need you to tell me where it goes.
00:31:05Dude, I am senior level water and power now, okay?
00:31:09I can't just...
00:31:09I have to keep trying.
00:31:11I won't stop. I'm getting there. I'm getting home.
00:31:16Or I'm dying. That's it.
00:31:19Look, Rick, you know you're my guy, man.
00:31:21But I can't tell you shit, all right?
00:31:23Even if I did tell you shit.
00:31:26You know, the shit I would tell you would definitely not be that...
00:31:31This tunnel would take you due east to a junction about a mile out.
00:31:37And there happened to be a padlock grate there.
00:31:40I 100% wouldn't tell you that the code to open, it's 4399.
00:31:48And another thing I'd tell your ass is that...
00:31:53Is that I get it.
00:31:55All right? But you don't have to die, man.
00:31:59So don't fucking die, okay?
00:32:27Base, this is Black Hawk 3. We have tally on Gen Klor.
00:32:30Wheels down in five.
00:32:32Copy, Black Hawk 3.
00:32:33After all the years of training and the talks with Okafor,
00:32:37playing the good soldier,
00:32:39I found a way back to you.
00:32:42It was a far away mission.
00:32:45A resource run to an abandoned chemical plant.
00:32:52I got a walker body.
00:32:54Cut off its hand.
00:32:58Left it with my dog tags.
00:33:01The corpse would burn.
00:33:05There's no escape for the living.
00:33:08So I had to make sure they thought I was dead.
00:33:17I am.
00:33:18I am.
00:33:19No, no, no.
00:33:22No, no, no.
00:33:31Yeah.
00:33:34No, no.
00:33:40Let's not hide.
00:33:41Let's pass this to Sardisar.
00:33:41No, no, no.
00:33:55No, no, no, no, no!
00:33:57God damn it!
00:34:08Quick, get back!
00:34:09Damn it!
00:34:32I saw the whole thing!
00:34:35Come on!
00:34:37It's okay.
00:34:38Copy. Resource extraction complete.
00:34:41Damn it, they're loaded.
00:34:46Call it in.
00:34:51Evacue located...
00:34:54a child...
00:34:55escorting her to extraction point.
00:34:58Copy.
00:34:58He killed my mommy.
00:35:00He's a good man,
00:35:02and we're from a good place.
00:35:04And we are all gonna go back there.
00:35:07All of us.
00:35:10We can't be out here.
00:35:11You said to ask for help.
00:35:14I'm asking.
00:35:16I am helping you.
00:35:19He would have found you.
00:35:21And whoever you're running to,
00:35:24he knows about you, Grimes.
00:35:29Come on.
00:35:53Wake up.
00:35:59We got the salute, soldier.
00:36:02What the hell do you know about me?
00:36:05I think of the dead all the time.
00:36:11Her name, back of the note, your message in a bottle from escape number three.
00:36:17I went to Red Island to phone the bottle.
00:36:20That was her on the phone, right?
00:36:22Yeah, I looked through those too.
00:36:24The child was her.
00:36:25Was your daughter, right?
00:36:33Who...
00:36:34fucking...
00:36:35knows?
00:36:35But Sean is an unusual name.
00:36:38Not many people out there.
00:36:40But if you start the search around where we picked you up...
00:36:45there's potent information.
00:36:50So...
00:36:50I suppose killing me helps your chances.
00:36:54You know, maybe I shouldn't have told Thorne I know things about you,
00:36:58but she tells me things...
00:37:02They would have sent me to find you,
00:37:05clean up my mess,
00:37:07and finally,
00:37:08erase you.
00:37:10You...
00:37:11are my charge.
00:37:12I'm the one who'd have to kill you,
00:37:15and Michonne,
00:37:16and anyone else you ran to out there just knowing about this...
00:37:20I don't care why you're covered in blood,
00:37:23why the bombs go out and why they don't come back.
00:37:26Yes, you do.
00:37:27It's in my city.
00:37:28Those aren't my people.
00:37:30Everyone are your people.
00:37:32Everyone alive.
00:37:33This isn't everything!
00:37:35You don't get to choose for the world.
00:37:38You don't get to choose for me.
00:37:40I don't.
00:37:41You did.
00:37:42You made the choice.
00:37:45My wife is my choice.
00:37:50My daughter.
00:37:52My life is my choice.
00:37:54You think I went what I went through?
00:37:59Did what I did to let anyone choose anything from me.
00:38:04You made the choice.
00:38:08You live for those people in that city because you got nothing else but your duty.
00:38:12Percentages and yields, A's and fucking B's.
00:38:15Some goddamn good soldier with nothing.
00:38:26I lost everything!
00:38:30I bombed Atlanta, and I bombed Los Angeles, and I was en route to do the same to Philadelphia!
00:38:39Estelle, a Marine named Estelle.
00:38:43That was my wife.
00:38:44And she didn't want to go in to liquidate all the people.
00:38:47I didn't manage to liquidate.
00:38:48We didn't want to see, Rick, another city die for nothing!
00:38:53And I had power, and I had a choice.
00:39:02And I killed my wife.
00:39:06And 4,000 other people.
00:39:09And we saved hundreds of thousands, maybe the whole world, with our choice.
00:39:16I tried with you, Rick.
00:39:18I tried.
00:39:20I'm sorry.
00:39:21What are you apologizing for?
00:39:39Just let me go.
00:39:41No.
00:39:44No.
00:39:52Do it.
00:39:56I won't.
00:40:10They're still with you.
00:40:15But you fight here now.
00:40:19You fight for them.
00:40:24You already made the choice.
00:40:35I'm moving you to logistics for Thorn.
00:40:38It's gonna help convert a college and the Cascades to a forward operating base over the next 12 months.
00:40:44Battle ready for the frontliners.
00:40:49All top CRM commanders will convene a summit there in one year to open the base.
00:40:54You and Thorn will be project leads on the conversion team.
00:41:00This is you getting in.
00:41:03This is the start of your path to the higher echelons of power.
00:41:08I don't want power.
00:41:11That's the thing.
00:41:15You already have it.
00:41:37You have to see this.
00:41:39Look.
00:41:41It's a scheduled rendezvous between alliance partners Portland and the Civic Republic.
00:41:45Major General Beal initiated a CRM reconnaissance mission to ascertain the status of Omaha.
00:41:51And they have learned that we are now an alliance of two.
00:41:55The city of Omaha, one of the three surviving cities on the continent, has fallen.
00:42:00And with it, nearly 90,000 souls.
00:42:03Initial survey shows a collapsed section of the city's perimeter barrier.
00:42:07In the coming weeks, the CRM will investigate the collapse to determine if this was pressure from a dead man.
00:42:13They should have seen it coming.
00:42:17Omaha let people know where they were and they died.
00:42:19What do you think? People did this.
00:42:21I don't know who did this.
00:42:22I know the Civic Republic is alive and Omaha is dead.
00:42:26I know that secrets work.
00:42:28I know this is the answer.
00:42:30This is the place that will create the future and Portland needs to follow our lead.
00:42:37That girl that you saved.
00:42:38Those darts you killed at the manhole.
00:42:42It was her mother and father.
00:42:47They had lived in a museum.
00:42:49A group they hunted and grew mushrooms, old fences.
00:42:55And then the girl said that one day, the dead was inside.
00:42:59And then everyone was dead.
00:43:02Except her.
00:43:04She hid in this giant sculpture.
00:43:08Said it was a grasshopper with these sharp spines.
00:43:15She crawled under there and the darts.
00:43:19The people she knew.
00:43:22They tore themselves up trying to get to her.
00:43:25She wound up covered in their blood and their organs.
00:43:31And after two days when she couldn't take it anymore, she finally stepped out to die.
00:43:37They didn't attack her.
00:43:40But she had nothing left.
00:43:42And nowhere to go.
00:43:45So she just walked.
00:43:48And tried not to make a noise as she cried.
00:43:51You.
00:43:52And me and that girl.
00:43:56We all want to be somewhere else with someone else.
00:43:59But we got stuck in the right place.
00:44:02We did.
00:44:03And you were going to see that someday.
00:44:07I'm not sorry I stopped you.
00:44:09I'm not sorry.
00:44:11I saved your life even when you didn't want it to be saved.
00:44:16You didn't save my life.
00:44:20Yes I did.
00:44:24I wouldn't have missed Gramps.
00:44:42At least there's one more good man in this world.
00:44:45Hm?
00:44:47One more good man to try and save the world.
00:44:51Whether he wants to or not.
00:45:04I don't know why.
00:45:11It has probably been a lot of people.
00:45:15But why?
00:45:18Yeah.
00:45:18How many people are?
00:45:19Little girls.
00:45:24I can't believe I want to come.
00:45:26the city's population, it appears that one building where hundreds of people gathered
00:45:30was last to fall, and CRM Intelligence states that though its doors held, something occurred
00:45:36inside the building itself, leading to some initial deaths, reanimations, and a lot of
00:45:42the building itself.
00:46:20I thought about ending it, just stopping it all.
00:46:24But then, then it would just be nothing, wouldn't it?
00:46:30All of it for nothing.
00:46:33I couldn't do it.
00:46:35But I still decided to die.
00:46:40I've been writing you letters the whole time,
00:46:43reaching out to feel something,
00:46:46writing just to imagine you could read them.
00:46:51This is my last one,
00:46:53the last letter I write to you that you'll never see.
00:46:58I love you.
00:47:01I don't see the dead anymore,
00:47:04or the ones I lost,
00:47:06or the sun, the sky, or the water.
00:47:11I don't see you anymore.
00:47:15I just see what's ahead.
00:47:18Metal rotors and gun oil and blood.
00:47:21What I have to do, what I can do to help save the world,
00:47:25even if you don't know I ever did that.
00:47:28I love you so much.
00:47:31I love you so, so much.
00:47:34I tried.
00:47:36Please, just know I tried.
00:47:44I tried.
00:47:46But I failed.
00:48:00This is a pretty bold move,
00:48:02but you said you believed in me.
00:48:04So if you want this bench to yourself,
00:48:06I can take this large pizza
00:48:08past the big blue building
00:48:10and eat it alone at my miserable desk
00:48:13at my miserable job.
00:48:15I do believe in you.
00:48:19And I do like pizza.
00:48:25But shut up about your misery.
00:48:28You're not stuck anywhere.
00:48:31Well, you said you're not where you want to be.
00:48:33I'm not.
00:48:35But I'm not stuck either.
00:48:38We can make this whole damn world ours
00:48:40if we want to.
00:48:46What if I came here one day
00:48:50with five pizzas
00:48:55and a wedding ring?
00:49:05I think you should do that.
00:49:21I think I believe in you.
00:49:26I think I'm...
00:49:45Thanks for taking us up the coast.
00:49:47I like the way you fly.
00:49:50Oh, to tell if there's anything on your mind,
00:49:53you rarely say shit these days, Rick.
00:49:59I've been thinking about this night
00:50:01when I was a kid.
00:50:05Seven years old.
00:50:08I was thirsty.
00:50:10Couldn't sleep.
00:50:12So I went to get some water.
00:50:14Old house.
00:50:16Squeaky floorboards.
00:50:18Try not to wake my family.
00:50:22I was on the stairs.
00:50:25And I saw a light in the kitchen.
00:50:28It was orange.
00:50:30The crops were burning.
00:50:33I was so scared I couldn't move.
00:50:38Then my dad was there.
00:50:42It looked like a monster.
00:50:46Half his body was burned.
00:50:49But he was there to get me out.
00:50:52He said I didn't need to be scared.
00:50:54That it was just the burning.
00:50:56That the flames are protecting the plants
00:50:58for the next harvest.
00:51:00He said it may look like the end of the world.
00:51:02But it's only just the beginning.
00:51:06He was so certain.
00:51:08So steady.
00:51:10And he...
00:51:14It made me calm.
00:51:17I believed him.
00:51:21Did he survive?
00:51:23Yeah, he was okay.
00:51:25And it was okay.
00:51:27He got a new barn.
00:51:29New house.
00:51:31Next year, the harvest was the best it ever was.
00:51:35Years later, after my dad died,
00:51:38my mother told me
00:51:40that it wasn't lightning.
00:51:44That he'd lit the fire.
00:51:47That the farm was gonna fail.
00:51:51And what he did saved it.
00:51:54He saved us.
00:51:57And...
00:51:58And it just rocked me.
00:52:02I thought he was the most honest man I knew.
00:52:06My mother said what he did wasn't right.
00:52:09She said that the scars and the pain
00:52:12had just reminded him.
00:52:19That he saved us.
00:52:27I'm in.
00:52:36It's been a good year.
00:52:38I know you're the right thing for this force, Rick.
00:52:41I know you're the right thing for this plan.
00:52:46No more A's and B's.
00:52:49No more Romo's.
00:52:53You know, I'm gonna be perfectly honest.
00:52:55I still don't know how it's all gonna work out, so...
00:52:59I'll tell you one more secret.

00:56:05I lost someone, years ago.
00:56:08But I just found out that he's alive.
00:56:10I need to ask for some help myself.
00:56:13We'll take you as far as you need.

00:56:35Michonne.
00:56:37Michonne!
00:56:38Rick!
00:56:40Hello, I am Scott M. Gimple.
00:56:42I'm the executive producer and showrunner of The Ones Who Live.
00:56:47And this is your episode, Insider.
00:56:49An army found me, a force of thousands,
00:56:53protecting a working, hidden city of hundreds of thousands.
00:56:56Throughout the shows in The Walking Dead universe,
00:56:58we've seen aspects of the CRM in small ways and in big ways.
00:57:03Our ambition is to tell hopefully a bigger story
00:57:06and have some answers that I've been sort of asking Scott
00:57:09and, you know, Robert Kirkman and all the rest of them for years.
00:57:16There was definitely a paper trail to the CRM
00:57:20from, you know, the genesis of this show.
00:57:22We've had stories on Fear of the Walking Dead
00:57:24that have shown the lengths they'll go to just erase evidence about them.
00:57:29And the CRM doesn't let anyone leave.
00:57:32Most people don't want to go, so it's not really an issue.
00:57:36The only thing you probably see is like Alcatraz.
00:57:38For us consignees though, we see that good life, man.
00:57:42When we first see Rick, he's outside the city.
00:57:44He's not yet a citizen.
00:57:46He's been in the consignment program with the CRM for years.
00:57:50There hasn't been a community that's been fortified enough to survive.
00:57:54A system of governance that works and is amazing.
00:57:58Everybody but Rick is thrilled to be there.
00:58:03But Rick doesn't need that.
00:58:04Rick needs his family.
00:58:05Rick needs Michelle.
00:58:06What happened to your forehead?
00:58:08Something like you happened.
00:58:10The CRM found his strength very quickly after he landed,
00:58:15and it was Okafor who intervened.
00:58:17It's a kind of odd relationship.
00:58:19He saves Rick's life countless times
00:58:22because Rick is trying to escape.
00:58:24Okafor pulls him back in.
00:58:26And usually, just one time in trying to escape,
00:58:29they just got rid of him.
00:58:32They don't bring in people like Rick.
00:58:34They avoid that vulnerability
00:58:36of bringing in somebody strong and charismatic.
00:58:39You join.
00:58:43I did.
00:58:44Pearlthorn is another survivor that was found out in the world.
00:58:48If Okafor hadn't been the one to find her,
00:58:50she would have never been brought back.
00:58:51We wanted somebody that could stand toe-to-toe with Rick.
00:58:55They have this kind of extraordinary respect
00:58:57that over the years bleeds into family.
00:59:03I think she sees herself reflected back in him.
00:59:06You know, she's a little bit more ahead in terms of like,
00:59:09okay, I've understood that I can still miss the love of my life,
00:59:12but that was then.
00:59:14This is now.
00:59:15This is what we have to do in order to move forward.
00:59:17And Rick never forgets that.
00:59:20I know.
00:59:21You're the right thing for this force, Rick.
00:59:24I know you're the right thing for this plan.
00:59:26For it, Rick.
00:59:40I know you're the right thing for this planet.
00:59:49Thank you, Patty.
00:59:49I know you're the right thing, zombie.
00:59:49To have Michonne and Rick breathing the same air again
00:59:52and it's one of the most exciting things.
00:59:55You have an expectation of a scene
00:59:57and then you have the scene that actually occurs.
00:59:59And the great news is that with certain actors,
01:00:03you can just tune into them.
01:00:04And I just have to sort of look into her eyes
01:00:07and then off we go.
01:00:08And something fortunately happened
01:00:10that was real and felt true.
01:00:12Andy and I, you know, we love to get in that sandbox
01:00:14and bring them to life.
01:00:16So that was really fun to ignite the epic love story journey
01:00:20that we're about to take.
