Shan and RJ broke down the Mavericks' draft outlook after landing the 9th overall pick. They analyzed top prospects like Mikel Brown, among others as a potential star pairing for Cooper Flagg. They debated whether Dallas should gamble on a high-upside project in a deep class, use the pick as trade bait, and more.

00:01Okay, we got mock drafts for the Mavericks at number nine.
00:05Let me give you a quick scenario.
00:06I thought of it while Mike Curtis was on with us at 8 from the Dallas Morning News.
00:12And I really wish you could pick 5, 6, 7 because that would make my question a lot more difficult.
00:18Con Caneple wins Rookie of the Year, but you get the fourth pick.
00:24You have to lose Cooper Flagg's Rookie of the Year.
00:28He doesn't win it.
00:30But you get pick 4 versus having Flagg go off for 40 and 45, win it, but cause you to
00:40win more games than you should and end up at 9.
00:45Yeah, so they had gone one pick higher.
00:51If they had finished one spot better, they would have gotten the third pick, I guess, fourth.
00:57That's how it worked.
00:58You never know how it's going to end up.
00:59Right, but I think the team that was ahead of that, I think it was the Jazz, right, that finished
01:03one game better than them in the stands or won the coin flip with them.
01:06And they finished, what, third?
01:09You got to trade Coop's Rookie of the Year trophy for pick 4 again.
01:15Yeah.
01:15I have my answer, but it'd be a lot more interesting if it'd be pick 5 or 6, but they
01:21couldn't pick there.
01:22No, they couldn't.
01:24Yeah, sure.
01:26Coop doesn't care about the Rookie of the Year.
01:29He wants the player.
01:30His girlfriend might.
01:31Oh, yeah.
01:33Someone said he'd been talking to Dirk.
01:39He'd been talking to Dirk maybe more than we know as they're on a little vacay with the pictures that
01:44came out.
01:45Pepe, you trading?
01:46Turks or Caicos, right?
01:48Yeah.
01:48You trading Coop's Rookie of the Year for the fourth pick?
01:51That award does nothing for me.
01:52You know, MVP, different, way different.
01:54Rookie of the Year, it's whatever.
01:56You know, trade it.
01:56Give me the fourth overall pick, whatever, and let's start this thing over again next year.
02:00I'm fine with it.
02:00Yeah, they won their final game.
02:02They won two of their last five, and Mavs fans are not happy.
02:06Huge shout-out to the developmental minutes for Chris Middleton.
02:09There we go.
02:10Got huge wins in March and April.
02:12What a great season to get ninth overall.
02:15Real quick, does the Rookie of the Year allow him to get a higher contract or a faster second contract?
02:24I don't know.
02:25I know some of the MVPs do, right?
02:26You're eligible for Supermaxes and stuff.
02:28Yeah.
02:28And that could take away from cap space, I guess, right?
02:31I mean, this actually is the right draft as well to end up at nine versus what next year's supposed
02:37to be.
02:38It's deep.
02:38It's deep.
02:38So, Kevin O'Connor with a two-round mock.
02:43DeBonsa, did you see his look yesterday?
02:45They zoomed in on him after the Wizards got the top pick.
02:49Oh, you'll notice it.
02:50Just type in AJ.
02:51As the top of the order ended up, Washington won.
02:54This is the third time that an Anthony Davis team is picking number one, by the way.
02:57Just funny.
02:59Utah, two.
03:01Grizzlies, three.
03:02Chicago, four.
03:04Clippers, five.
03:06Nets, six.
03:08Kings, seven.
03:09Hawks, eight.
03:11If you're thinking about trading around with some of those teams.
03:13So, Kevin O'Connor has AJ going to the Wizards.
03:15I guess there's some talk from the Wizards.
03:18Most of the time, you get the number one pick and they're like, we're thrilled.
03:22We're happy.
03:23You got the DeBonsa jersey already printed up.
03:25I guess the Wizards GM was talking about possibly trading back or entertaining the idea.
03:30That set off Twitter yesterday.
03:32So, that's interesting.
03:33I mean, if you think about it.
03:34Yeah.
03:35You've got four.
03:37I think it's three.
03:39I'm not a Caleb.
03:40I'm not big on Caleb.
03:41Wilson?
03:42Yeah.
03:42You're not.
03:43He's good.
03:44I think the other three are better.
03:46Okay.
03:46I think Caleb Wilson's very, very good.
03:47I'm not S'ing on him.
03:49I just think the other three are better.
03:51If you think AJ and Darren is 55, 45, 50, 50.
03:56And a Cam Boozer who may be the most ready.
03:59Yeah.
03:59Right?
04:00Yeah.
04:01They shouldn't love him.
04:02That's a YouTube scout.
04:04Yeah.
04:04So, he may be the most ready, but the least upside.
04:07But if you're cool with any three.
04:09Yeah.
04:11Move down.
04:12Darren Peterson to the Jazz at two from Kevin O'Connor.
04:16Cam Boozer to the Grizz at three.
04:19Caleb Wilson.
04:20And who's this from?
04:21Kevin O'Connor.
04:22Yahoo.
04:24Caleb Wilson, Bulls at four.
04:26Keaton.
04:28Illinois.
04:29Keaton Wagler at Illinois.
04:30Keaton Wagler is going to go five.
04:34So, this is via Indiana.
04:36This is the devastation yesterday.
04:38The Pacers basically traded this pick to the Clippers.
04:44The Pacers price paid for Zubats, who they were trying to get to replace a local guy,
04:53the big, who went to Milwaukee.
04:55It was, yes, Miles.
04:57Miles.
04:59The full paid price for Zubats at the trade deadline.
05:03Mathurin, Isaiah Jackson, an unprotected first, a future second, unprotected first in 2029,
05:11and number five overall.
05:14Devastation for Carlisle, as he could have had pick number five to go along with the return
05:20of Tyrese next year.
05:22So, Wagler to the Clippers at five, Flemings to the Nets at six, Acuff to the Kings at seven,
05:32the big man from Michigan.
05:34Oh, Mara.
05:35Mara to the Hawks at eight, and the pick that I am more than okay with, and totally fine,
05:43considering his back doesn't disintegrate.
05:46As Chuck Cooper's team was a little bit worried about last week when he joined us,
05:50Mikel Brown, Mavericks, number nine from Louisville.
05:55Here's the write-up.
05:56The Mavs didn't get lucky in the lottery once again, but they could still find the perfect
06:00point guard running mate for Cooper Flagg.
06:02When Brown is in the zone, he has an unstoppable pull-up jumper, an ambidextrous finishing ability,
06:08and the quick reads to rifle passes before the defense has time to react.
06:12He had a 45-point breakout performance in February after a back injury, dogged him all freshman
06:17year, then ended his year later in the month.
06:20Now, Cooper's like, these backs, right?
06:22We talked about it with Tyron Smith and other prospects.
06:24How much better do they actually get?
06:27And Kevin O'Connor finishes.
06:28The absences muddy the evaluation and leave real questions about his consistency that may
06:34not get answered until he's fully healthy.
06:36If it weren't for that time missed, though, he might even be available.
06:40He might not even be available before this pick at nine.
06:42If he lands with Dallas, it's hard to imagine a better situation.
06:45Kyrie could serve as a mentor.
06:47Brown could grow alongside a future MVP candidate in Flagg.
06:51I went and watched this kid yesterday.
06:53He's a good player, man.
06:54He looks like a star to me.
06:55Yeah, he is a stud.
06:57I've seen people say he's like a Darius Garland or a McCollum, CJ McCollum type.
07:04He's more explosive than CJ McCollum to me.
07:06I mean, this kid had nasty finishes.
07:09He can play.
07:10He can play.
07:11Obviously, you've got the injury worry.
07:13Yeah.
07:14And that's a big worry.
07:16Because, I mean, you're taking somebody who's, what, 19, 20 years old or already hurt,
07:20already with a back?
07:22A little scary.
07:24ESPN also gave Mikel Brown to the Mavericks with their pick.
07:30Brown has a lot to gain in the pre-draft process.
07:32He needs to answer the lingering questions around his freshman year.
07:36After coming into the season viewed as a top five candidate, an offensive talent with dynamic
07:41shot-making prowess and passing vision, and teams feel he's capable of much more than
07:46he showed at Louisville.
07:47His reputation is built on his showings with USA Basketball over the past couple of years.
07:52It wasn't A.J.
07:52DeBonsa who was getting all the USA Basketball hype.
07:55It was this kid.
07:56And that kept him in a top ten discussion.
08:00So, here you go.
08:02Mikel Brown.
08:03And yesterday, Mavs beat reporters caught up with him and asked how he would feel if
08:09he got picked here.
08:10Surreal, because I think Dallas is the best city in the country.
08:13It's my favorite city in the country.
08:14Oh, let's go.
08:15So, I mean, it'll be great.
08:17I mean, I just love the vibe of Dallas.
08:18I have a lot of family in Texas as well, so that'll be great.
08:21But, you know, every time I go to Dallas to play, I mean, I just love the city.
08:26I love the vibe.
08:27I love the people.
08:27You know, the fans.
08:29If the Mavs don't move up ESPN rights, walking away with a young, starting caliber point guard
08:34prospect to pair a flag long-term would be a consolation prize.
08:38I went and watched some of Brayden.
08:41Brayden Burry is from Arizona.
08:42He was impressive, too.
08:44He's a good player.
08:44They got a lot of...
08:45Look, there's a...
08:46You get Mikel Brown at nine?
08:48I'm like, that is a deep-ass draft.
08:49You are just fine at nine.
08:53Like, the whole idea that it's panic set in, they dropped the spot.
08:57You are going to get a good player.
08:58It might be a project.
09:00Right?
09:01It might be...
09:01And there's plenty of projects there.
09:03You're also going to have an opportunity, if you wanted to, if you wanted to get somebody
09:07maybe more win now with a lower ceiling, is Yexel Lendenborg from Michigan.
09:13But there's plenty of...
09:14I love LeBaron Phylon from Alabama.
09:18He is...
09:19Like, he could shoot the lights out of it.
09:22He's a good player.
09:23He's tough.
09:25If you get him, I'm fine with that.
09:27But, man, I'll tell you, like...
09:29What about your boy?
09:31Nate, Nate, Nate's really a polarizing player because he is either going to hit or miss.
09:37There is no in-between.
09:38He's not going to be an okay player.
09:40He's either going to be really, really good or really, really bad.
09:43He could shoot, and he could shoot at all three levels,
09:46and he can get his shot off because he's 6'10", and he's going to play a wing.
09:50But he's a little slow.
09:52He's a little slow.
09:53Like, that's...
09:53Slow?
09:54He's not explosive.
09:55Okay.
09:56But, you know, like, when they got him, and obviously he's at Rick Barnes,
10:00so everybody was comparing him to Kevin Durant because he's 6'11",
10:02and he could shoot.
10:04He's got a really good mid-range.
10:05And KD is not, like, super explosive, right?
10:09So there's that.
10:10But he's not KD, and he's weak.
10:13He's super skinny.
10:14Who do the Tolos want?
10:15But Frank LaFranco, fantastic.
10:17So you go with Mikel Brown.
10:18You want Burry's.
10:20You're trying to move up or down with the new general manager,
10:23who was the ESPN draft analyst in Mike Schmitz.
10:26People are saying, Brown, no, the back, they don't want to do that.
10:30But a lot of people are saying they do love his game.
10:34They're taking Yaxl.
10:36Is there any way that Acuff falls to the Mavs?
10:38I mean, I would doubt it.
10:40I think the guy that could fall that you might have a chance is maybe,
10:45maybe Kingston Flemings.
10:46He might be the guy that falls.
10:47I doubt it.
10:48I think they're both gone by 7.
10:51This is a really good draft, man.
10:53Like, you are, I promise you, we are not in a bad position at 9.
10:59RJ's got more draft research for the Mavericks
11:01after they end up with 9 yesterday at the Lotto.
