DOH to strengthen organ donation system

The Department of Health has committed to strengthening the country's organ donor sharing system to bolster liver transplant programs. During the celebration of the joint liver transplant program anniversary of The Medical City and Rizal Medical Center, Health Secretary Ted Herbosa said he hopes to strengthen the Philippine Network for Organ Sharing as the primary body responsible for overseeing organ donation and transplantation by hiring a PHILNOS director. Herbosa added he is working with the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation to establish a Z benefit package that will shoulder the cost of liver transplants for patients in the country.

00:00Anong nakakagaling? Anong diba?
00:02Eli, ano yung halaman na nakakagaling?
00:05Eh di, transplant.
00:07Yay!
00:13Sabi ko, ah, effective nga yung transplant. Matalino tong batang to.
00:18Anyway, today is the celebration of the lives that were given another chance.
00:23It is the celebration of families who endured fear, long hospital stays, and difficult waiting periods
00:30who are now able to stand together once again with hope for the future.
00:35Commonly, most Filipinos would go to India because the cost of liberal transplantation there is 2.1 million pesos.
00:43But here, it was 5 million pesos prior to this agreement.
00:48But after, when Stuart came in, he said, I'll lower it by 50%.
00:53So it's down to 2.4, around that, for that level.
00:58And if you think about that, 2.4 versus 2.1, plus the cost of travel being there.
01:05Actually, it makes no sense why we should go and send our kids to India.
01:10This operation should be done in the Philippines.
01:12And I will fully support that they be done in the Philippines.
01:15You mentioned kidney transplantation as PhilHealth Z-benefit.
01:21So we're now working, Lisa, as Dr. Edwin Mercado, the president of PhilHealth.
01:25I chair the benefits to me.
01:27Whatever benefit package, I think this should be about 1.7 sa kidney.
01:331.7 million.
01:35So please double.
01:36Pwede na 2 million?
01:38Double, please.
01:39So if we get that transplant, even the immunosuppression for kidney transplant is paid for $40,000 a month.
01:47So I do hope we can pass this, but I'm still Secretary of Health and Chairman of the Board of
01:52PhilHealth.
01:52And this will definitely help 144 patients with biliary atresia a year.
01:58So we can actually take care of that.
02:05So today, as we celebrate this first birthday of the TMC Resolve Medical Joint Liver Transplant Program,
02:14we honor the courage, compassion, and commitment that made these second chances possible.
02:48We'll see you next time.
