Could there still be a chance for a Stefon Diggs/Patriots reunion? Could NE still be interested in adding another WR? Are A.J. Brown or Brian Thomas Jr. still options? What about Tyreek Hill? Let's hear from Cameron Wolfe!
Transcript
00:00Well, we can hear from Cameron Wolfe talked about the Patriots' interest in receivers
00:04still being there even after signing Romeo Dobbs. Here was Cameron Wolfe.
00:10Patrick, the wide receiver position has been the Patriots' focus primarily as free agency started.
00:15They've called on just about everybody, and a lot of calls were too expensive for their liking.
00:19But they got Romeo Dobbs, who they think is an ascending player.
00:23As far as Stephon Diggs, I also checked in to see, hey, is there a chance they would bring him
00:27back on a lower number?
00:28It sounds like that is not going to be a realistic chance for them.
00:32They're going to move forward without Stephon Diggs.
00:34And so are they done at wide receiver?
00:36There's been a lot of buzz with A.J. Brown throughout the offseason.
00:40From what I've told, the Romeo Dobbs signing does not end their interest for A.J. Brown.
00:45It certainly changes it. They're not desperate for a wide receiver anymore.
00:48They're not hungry and needing to overpay. And so maybe it changes leverage.
00:52Don't rule this out.
00:54And maybe this is a conversation we talk about later in the offseason when it becomes a little bit more
00:58advantageous for Philly.
00:59After June 1, it goes from a potential losing $20 million on their cap if they trade A.J. Brown
01:05to gaining $7 million on their cap if they trade him after June 1.
01:09So just keeping an eye on that, from what I understand, the Patriots still love him.
01:12They're just not as needy to get him as much now that they have Romeo Dobbs in the building.
01:17Why wouldn't you want Diggs back here on a lower number?
01:19I would all day long.
01:21Yeah, but I mean, I would, but he's probably not coming back on a lower number.
01:25No, but that's not what I'm – the reporting is that he asked and they're not interested in him even
01:33at a different number.
01:35Because it was all for public consumption.
01:38This lovey-dovey relationship was by design.
01:42It wasn't really how they felt about him.
01:45It's that they needed him and he needed them.
01:47And they were going to boost his reputation and he was going to help boost Drake May.
01:53And that's what happened.
01:54Like, Drake May has been traded the last two times and cut by the last three teams he was on.
01:58Not Drake May.
01:59I mean, Seth Diggs.
02:00Seth Diggs.
02:01Cut twice and traded once.
02:03Well, they knew it was a one-year deal anyways.
02:05They knew – when they signed him, they knew it was a one-year deal.
02:06Well, everybody here said it was a three-year deal.
02:08No, no.
02:08Yeah, I did.
02:09No, no.
02:10I took everybody at their word and I –
02:13But the money pointed to a one-year deal.
02:15But if you can have Diggs and Dobbs –
02:17Uh-huh.
02:18Diggs and Dobbs, Diggs and Dunks, whatever.
02:21Fifteen million bucks for Diggs, you wouldn't – that sounds like a great scenario to me.
02:25Yeah, and I don't know that he's going to get all that much money.
02:27I'm just looking around at the rest of the contracts that have been handed out to receivers.
02:31Outside of Alec Pierce, none of these contracts are insane numbers.
02:36Like, I don't know that he's going to get a ton of money in free agency anyways.
02:39Well, let me ask this.
02:40So they have some sort of an issue with the player then?
02:43If you don't want him at less money?
02:46Well, I think they might feel like if –
02:48What, Curtis?
02:49No, I just – I would just love to hear Mike Rabel answer that question.
02:53Yeah.
02:54It would be fascinating.
02:54Did Diggs want to come back at less money?
02:56Was there any reports about he would take less to come back?
02:58No, he said it was up to the team of whether or not he would be back.
03:01He didn't specify the money.
03:01On his contract.
03:02So I think when they look at it, they probably know if we're not going to –
03:09If we didn't offer him, hey, we want you back but at less money, then they know there's no way
03:15to cut him and bring him back because he's going to feel a certain way because he's going to have
03:20–
03:20Unless they're giving him a chance to explore his market, realize he's not worth what he may think he is,
03:25and then he comes back and he's like, okay, I'd take the money.
03:27That's the only way he can do it.
03:28That's very rare.
03:29You don't come back for less.
03:30You'll sign elsewhere for less.
03:31I mean, Edelman did it, right?
03:33One year, six million.
03:34Yeah, he did one time.
03:35Didn't they do it with Dante Hightower too?
03:37No.
03:38Well, Dante Hightower went out there and –
03:41Explored his market.
03:42Well, if that's their intention, I wouldn't be whispering to people that we don't want him back at less money.
03:49So –
03:50And Dante Hightower was a free agent and so was Julian Edelman.
03:54They didn't have contracts in place where the team was like basically like, hey, we don't want to pay you
04:00this.
04:00We'll cut you.
04:01If you can't get money, we'll bring you back.
04:03That's the difference.
04:04I think Steph Diggs is probably looking at it like, I have a contract here.
04:08You knew what this contract was.
04:10And I –
04:12A 508 text says, Greg, you know the reason is that Diggs was a clown show.
04:16I don't think he was a clown show.
04:18He wasn't.
04:19That ain't got nothing to do with it.
04:20They just didn't love him the way they said they did.
04:22I'm sorry.
04:22Because if they did, he'd still be here.
04:24And Julian Edelman got $6 million from the Giants when he had to beg for it, when Belichick was paying
04:29his kids $3 million each.
04:31Right.
04:32Because Belichick knew the market.
04:34Right.
04:34I mean, that's the thing.
04:35Well, I don't think he paid Steve market value, if we're being honest.
04:38No, no.
04:38I mean, he knew the market with Edelman, you know.
04:40And Edelman is – unfortunately, he was in one of those – he was in that –
04:44They were paying him $3 million or they offered him $3 million.
04:46He was in the category of like, teams looked at you like, oh, the only reason why you are who
04:51you are is because you play for New England.
04:53Was Julian Edelman the best bargain in Boston sports history?
04:56Pretty close.
04:57When you consider his impact.
04:58Yeah, I would say he probably was.
05:00I mean, you look at the Super Bowl 49, Super Bowl 51, Super Bowl 53.
05:04Those three Super Bowls.
05:05Yeah.
05:06He was the MVP of one.
05:07He was damn good with the greatest catch in Super Bowl history.
05:10And then he had that go-ahead touchdown against the Seahawks.
05:12Yeah, I don't think there's another guy that has helped an organization around here to win three championships.
05:17I just don't understand it.
05:18Like, you got a guy who got you 1,000 yards.
05:21Right.
05:22And if you could get him for $15 million, $16, whatever the number is, I don't know why you wouldn't
05:27do that.
05:28Then you have to worry about A.J. Brown or whatever else.
05:31Because you're worried that, Greg, if you knew that, like, here's my contract, and then they came to you and
05:38said, oh, we want you to take less, it's a slap in the face.
05:41No, I'm not talking about a slap in the face.
05:44Like, the way you're progressing the timeline, they are saying now, they are uninterested.
05:51If Diggs came back and said, hey, I want to be here and I'll do it for $15 million, they
05:55would say, no, thank you.
05:56Like, I don't get that.
05:58Oh, if they did that, I would have it.
05:59No, but that's what the reporting just was.
06:00Are you listening to the show?
06:02Like, that's what the reporting is.
06:04Right, but I don't think Diggs is coming back to them going, hey, I'd love to come back and play
06:09for you.
06:10That's why I think that's the reason why.
06:12But Greg's point is that why even have it leaked that you wouldn't give him, you wouldn't take him back
06:17for less money, even if he did?
06:18Like, despite whether or not Steph Diggs would do that, why, as the Patriots, are we even letting that be
06:24out there?
06:25Because that rumor alone makes it seem like you don't want him, like you want nothing to do with him.
06:30Right, and it lowers his value.
06:32That's why it's leaked it.
06:33It's dumb, I think.
06:34But they wouldn't want to lower, they're not trying to lower his value, Wiggy.
06:37No, no, I'm saying for, I guess I'm, I don't, I don't understand why.
06:42All I know is that if you have a contract.
06:45The whole thing I was saying, I just don't understand it.
06:47No, no, no, but Diggs, Diggs is not coming back for less, and Diggs is not saying, I'll come back
06:53for less.
06:54If he was, if Diggs initially said, hey, I'll come back for less, or I'll restructure my deal, and the
07:00Patriots said, no, we don't want you.
07:02Okay, well, anyway, anything else, Shire?
