00:00Yes!
00:02Four sets of holiday hosts.
00:04I just need some champagne and you to massage me.
00:07Check in to each other's places.
00:09Good morning, welcome to the Red House.
00:11And get to grips with one another.
00:13I certainly don't accept the five at all.
00:17Today, the guests have a smashing time.
00:21I'm never going to complain about hand-blown glass price again in my life.
00:26Ever.
00:27As they battle.
00:28When you're in hospitality, you know what to check and where to check.
00:32So are you going to be the fussy one then?
00:34To be named Best Value for Money.
00:36It's the three. Oh my God, that's really low.
00:46The first visit of the week is to Warram in Norfolk.
00:50And the three horseshoes, run by couple Fiona and Michael Farrow,
00:54who are a solid pair.
00:57Fiona is my rock.
00:58I literally couldn't do what we do if I didn't have Fiona.
01:03Michael is happy to be happy.
01:06It's a good term for me.
01:07Oh, and you like food?
01:08I do love food.
01:12Guests hungry for more can choose from six rooms and four lodges for up to £185 a night,
01:19including breakfast, in a pub that raises the bar.
01:22It's quite unique to have this oldie worldie little pub, but with luxurious rooms, comfortable beds and they get a
01:31lovely warm welcome and they get a lovely breakfast.
01:34And there's one area where the duo hope they'll clean up.
01:37I would imagine cleanliness is the biggest complaint you'd get in rooms and I would say it's not a problem
01:45for us.
01:45About to arrive are today's first guests.
01:49Do you think you'll move on from Norfolk when you find a handsome man to whisk you away?
01:56Well, if he's whisking me away, I might well move on, but there's no intention to do so.
02:01Proving home is where the heart is, our friends and colleagues Barbara Cushing and Elizabeth Good of Holly Lodge Bed
02:08and Breakfast in Thursford, Norfolk, where they're keeping up appearances.
02:12When people first meet me, they might think I'm a little bit on the posh side, but I hope I'm
02:20nice, but sometimes I have to be a little nasty.
02:23Lovely combination.
02:26Those looking for face value will find six rooms and a shepherd's hut for up to £200 a night in
02:32a place the hosts think hits the spot.
02:35Holly Lodge, I think, is incredibly special.
02:38The location is charming. The interior is cosy.
02:42You come in and it's a home from home.
02:44Absolutely. I could move in here tomorrow, actually.
02:47And when it comes to the week ahead, this pair will be playing it straight.
02:52We will judge very honestly and with compassion, because we know anybody that comes from this competition loves their business
02:59as much as we do, so we bear that in mind.
03:04It's a lovely building.
03:06I think they could do with touching up the paint round the windows a bit.
03:10It is a bit flaky in part.
03:12It is.
03:12Good morning.
03:13Good morning.
03:13Good morning.
03:14I'm Elizabeth.
03:15Hello, I'm Michael.
03:16And I'm Barbara.
03:17Hi, nice to meet you, Barbara. I'm Fiona.
03:19And welcome to the Three Horseshoes.
03:21You're going to be staying in our CLI room.
03:22It's £180, including breakfast.
03:25If you'd just like to go that way, the key is in the door.
03:28OK.
03:30Wow.
03:31It looks brand new, Elizabeth, doesn't it?
03:33It does. It's very uplifting inside.
03:36Yeah.
03:37With Barbara and Elizabeth down with the room, today's next guests are at boiling point.
03:43I've had one cup of tea.
03:45Normally, by now, I've had three.
03:47Well, usually by now, I've had my dinner, because I get up at the crack of dawn.
03:52Thinking with their stomachs, our couple Helen Robertson and Carl Gibbs, owners of Peacock
03:57Lake in Gunthorpe, Nottinghamshire, a pair who don't air their dirty laundry.
04:03Helen is great.
04:04I'm putting my socks away in the morning and putting the kettle on.
04:07And from there, basically, we don't talk all day.
04:10No, I'm only joking.
04:12We'll be getting separated very quickly, aren't we?
04:15Guests looking to come together can choose one of six pods for up to £170 a night and
04:21enjoy a pitch-perfect stay.
04:24What we wanted to do was put a hotel room into a glamping pod.
04:28We've got kitchens, televisions.
04:30Games room.
04:31Games room.
04:32So they've got the comforts that they've got at home in this environment.
04:36And the couple want their environment unspoiled.
04:40I don't want to stay anywhere that's not clean.
04:43I'd feel uncomfortable.
04:44You wouldn't tolerate it.
04:47I will look.
04:48Yeah.
04:50Morning.
04:50Good morning.
04:51Nice to meet you.
04:51I'm Carl.
04:52I'm Michael.
04:53And I'm Fiona.
04:54Hi, I'm Helen.
04:55Hello.
04:55Nice to meet you.
04:56Welcome to the one and three horses.
04:58You're going to be staying in the Holcomb room.
05:00It's £185.
05:01The key's in the door.
05:02Thank you very much.
05:06Wow.
05:07Really classy.
05:08Yeah.
05:09I think it's bags of character.
05:11Yeah.
05:11Beams on the ceiling.
05:12With Helen and Carl beaming, today's final guests are breaking new ground.
05:18First experience ever being in a car with you, considering I've known you a long time.
05:2314 long, gruelling years.
05:27Counting the days, our friends and colleagues, Carl Webb and Liz Houlihan, of the Red House
05:33in Longstow, Cambridgeshire, where they have an eye for detail.
05:38Carl is a perfectionist.
05:39He does like things to be spot on, but you can't get perfection all the time.
05:44Ah, so it's your fault when the tables aren't clean.
05:47No.
05:48No.
05:50Guests can brush away their woes in one of seven rooms for up to £165 a night and have
05:56a stay that transcends time.
05:59The pub was built in 1799.
06:01You know, you've got the exposed beams, you've got the history of the building, but then
06:06we've added, like, a bit of a modern twist to it, and it seems to be well-received when
06:10customers come to us.
06:11And for this duo, it's the morning meal that seals the deal.
06:16I absolutely love a full English breakfast.
06:18Decent quality bacon, decent quality sausages.
06:21You're a real stickler for eggs, aren't you?
06:23Yeah, it's got to be a nice free-range egg.
06:25Nice and runny.
06:26So you can dip your toast in it.
06:28Hi, good morning.
06:30Good morning.
06:30Good morning.
06:31I'm Carl.
06:31Hello, Carl.
06:32I'm Michael.
06:33I'm Fiona.
06:33Hi, Fiona.
06:34Nice to meet you.
06:34Hi, I'm Liz.
06:35Hello, Liz.
06:36Welcome to the one and three horseshoes.
06:37You're going to be staying in the Burnham Thorpe Room.
06:39It's £165 a night.
06:41The key's in the door.
06:45Oh, wow.
06:46It's big and spacious in here.
06:48Oh, lovely.
06:49Really nice.
06:51With the hosts out of the way, the guests are quick out the gate at the three horseshoes.
06:57Feels nice and comfy to me.
06:59Yeah, it's memory foam.
07:00I assume this is a wardrobe.
07:02You've got a hairdryer, a fan and nice and clean.
07:06Yes.
07:06Fabulous.
07:07It's dust in the corners.
07:09Look at this.
07:10Yeah, what there?
07:11No, that's not great.
07:14That's all right, isn't it?
07:14Very clean.
07:16There's a hair in here.
07:18Look.
07:19There's all dust and hairs in it.
07:22Oh, this is nice, Barbara.
07:25Yeah, really nice.
07:27There's dust sitting there up here.
07:31Nice and clean.
07:32As we'd expect.
07:34Yeah, absolutely.
07:35There's hairs everywhere again.
07:37There's not just a few.
07:38There's a lot in here.
07:39A loo brush.
07:40What is all that white?
07:42Is that bits of loo paper?
07:44Hmm.
07:44If I had to fault this, it would just be a bit of mould down in the corners.
07:50You've got some there.
07:51Let's just let it down.
07:52Just check the kettle.
07:54That's lovely.
07:55No scale in there.
07:56Nicely cleaned out.
07:57So this is nice.
07:58Matches in with the headboard.
08:00Yeah, nice and clean inside as well.
08:02It's absolutely perfect.
08:04A bit much that is, isn't it, really?
08:06Definitely.
08:06It's like a handprint.
08:08Room inspection's almost over.
08:10Carl and Liz don't poo-poo the loo.
08:13That is clean.
08:14Yeah.
08:14Be happy doing a dump in there.
08:17Barbara has a spring in her step.
08:19Oh, it's got bounce.
08:21I like it.
08:23Yeah.
08:24And Helen and Carl take a swipe.
08:26This is from one wife.
08:28This is basic cleanliness.
08:30It's not acceptable.
08:36Warram Folklore speaks of a phantom fiddler
08:39whose ghostly music drifts from a tunnel linked to a nearby priory.
08:44Today, hosts Michael and Fiona hope their guests will add a string to their bows
08:49with a lesson in glassblowing.
08:51Wow!
08:52I've always fancied doing glassblowing.
08:54You can come away with a couple of baubles.
08:58Let's hope we're the best blowers.
09:02Langham Glass is a family operation established in 1979
09:07and offers workshops for would-be glassmakers.
09:10Good afternoon.
09:11Good afternoon.
09:12I'm going to show you how we make a whiskey glass.
09:14Today, glassmaster Carl shows the group how it's done.
09:18So that iron now, you can see, is a bready orange colour.
09:21First, molten glass is collected on a metal tube.
09:24So what I'm going to do now is use this newspaper folded up into a pad soaked in water.
09:30Just by moving my fingers and my hands underneath that pad, change the shape of the glass.
09:35Once the glass is shaped, air is blown through the tube before being finished in a mould.
09:41And flow gently down here now.
09:44Come out of the mould.
09:46Now the top piece of the glass is actually removed in the morning when the glass is cold.
09:51There you go.
09:51That's your whiskey tumbler.
09:53Wow!
09:55Glass throwing's great.
09:57Really interesting.
09:58I'd say it was harder than I expected.
10:00Very, very hot.
10:02Today, the group are getting hands-on.
10:05Hosts Fiona and Michael are first to give the glass a crack.
10:10You're going backwards and forwards.
10:12See?
10:12With the iron like that.
10:13Can you feel that heat?
10:15It's quite warm.
10:16Luckily, I'm used to handling hot things, being a chef in a kitchen.
10:19Oh, you are hot stuff.
10:21Oh.
10:23Fiona and Mike were really good hosts.
10:25It was nice to see them go first.
10:28Oh, wow!
10:29They've got really stuck in, haven't they?
10:31Yeah.
10:32With the guests blown away by the hosts...
10:35Come on, girls.
10:36Don't blow it.
10:37Barbara and Elizabeth are in the hot seat.
10:40Hand on the iron first.
10:43That's it.
10:44I think your nails are going to melt.
10:46I couldn't live if my nails melted.
10:48My life would be over.
10:51You're doing really well.
10:52Oh, it's very wonky.
10:53I'm never going to complain about hand-blown glass price again in my life.
10:59Ever.
10:59So we're ready to blow now.
11:01Barbara and Liz seem going for a laugh and Barbara's funny.
11:05Was that a suit to do glass blowing in or was that normal wear?
11:09She didn't know she was coming here, so she clearly likes to dress like that.
11:12Oh, well, yeah, she looked nice then.
11:15Good job.
11:15Congratulations.
11:16Our own unique Liz Barbara glass.
11:19Well done, Liz.
11:20Barbara comes across as someone who's quite well-to-do, but she's quite fun and enjoys all aspects of life
11:27and will give anything a go.
11:29A gentle blow.
11:31And as the remaining guests pucker up...
11:33This is impressive, Helen.
11:35Well done.
11:36The hosts hope they're having a pucker time.
11:39Well, I think it's going really well, but you never know at the end of the day.
11:42It is a competition.
11:43You are right.
11:51The first visit of the week is to the Three Horseshoes in Warram, Norfolk, where hosts Michael and Fiona have
11:58invited their guests for a drink in the bar.
12:01Welcome and cheers, thank you.
12:02Cheers!
12:04And with bottoms up, Carl gets down to business.
12:08You guys have got a really nice pub here. How long have you been here?
12:10We've been here eight years.
12:11I'm a fifth-generation landlord.
12:14OK.
12:14Fee's been in pubs since she was 16.
12:16I love them. We're just obsessed with pubs.
12:18We've always lived in pubs. There's nothing like a British pub anywhere else in the world.
12:23We also run an old pub.
12:25So this is a real pub-off, isn't it?
12:29It's really nice to see some more pub owners that have got a real passion for what they do.
12:35For us, it's kind of an inspiration to see someone else doing so well.
12:38Yeah.
12:39We travelled round the world for a year when we first met, and we decided we were going to come
12:44back and run pubs again.
12:45And we sat on a beach in northern Peru and drew stores to see which of us was going to
12:50learn the kitchen, and I lost.
12:53And I've run my own kitchens ever since.
12:55Pies are probably what I'm most famous for, and since we've been open, we've made and sold over 100,000
13:01pies by hand.
13:03Would you like to try some?
13:04Yes.
13:05Oh, yes, please.
13:06It'll be all hers.
13:09How is it?
13:10Lovely.
13:10Good chunk of meat in there.
13:13Seriously delicious.
13:14Is the breakfast going to be as good as the pies?
13:16I certainly think so myself.
13:17I truly believe I'm a good chef, and our offering for breakfast is as good as our offering for dinner.
13:23Pies with sputton.
13:24I think if the breakfast is half as good as that, it'd be nice.
13:27Yeah, definitely.
13:28What are your hospitality no-nos?
13:31Orange grouting.
13:33That's always grim, isn't it?
13:34Yeah.
13:34There's gone orange from body fat.
13:37Oh!
13:38It is a bath.
13:39It is.
13:40I've certainly got one that springs to mind.
13:43Beautiful hotel.
13:45Stepped out on the balcony, and they were the largest toenail clippings.
13:50Oh!
13:51I was absolutely horrified, and it totally put me off my stay.
13:56The group comes across it.
13:57They're all quite friendly, and I don't feel that there's anyone looking to play any games at the moment.
14:04Not at the moment.
14:05Maybe we're just the mugs going, yeah, everyone was really nice.
14:10Drink's done.
14:11It's time for the guests to get some Zeds in.
14:14No snoring tonight.
14:16Yes, remember that, no snoring.
14:18See you in the morning.
14:20Good night.
14:25It's a new day in Warham.
14:28Good morning.
14:29How did you sleep?
14:30Like a princess.
14:32But in Helen's room, she's touched on a sore subject.
14:36The holes are blocked.
14:38And it's got too much pressure, and that hurts.
14:41And it's leaking down here.
14:43It's just, it's pouring down there.
14:49In the kitchen, Chef Michael's cooking up a storm.
14:53They loved my pies last night, so I'm hoping that my breakfast will be up to their standard.
14:58I doubt it won't be, but we'll see.
15:01Good morning.
15:02Good morning.
15:03Are you all ready to order?
15:04Yep.
15:04Could I get two poached eggs on toast, please?
15:07Of course.
15:07Full breakfast, please, with fried eggs.
15:10And I'm going to go for the full with poached.
15:12Thank you very much.
15:13With orders in...
15:14We need a full with poached and brown toast.
15:17Michael cracks on.
15:19I really hope these yolks are going to be yellow enough for my customers.
15:25But Carl wants the group to spill the beans.
15:28How did you guys find your rooms?
15:30I mean, first impressions in the room was lovely, wasn't it?
15:32Yeah.
15:32But I just think some minor details.
15:34Yeah, double-checking your...
15:36Your cleanliness.
15:36That it's been cleaned properly before.
15:39Right, OK.
15:39When you're in hospitality, you know what to check and where to check.
15:43So are you going to be the fussy one, then?
15:46Er...
15:46No.
15:47I'm not always fussy.
15:49It sounds like you know what you like, though.
15:50Yeah, I do know what I like, yeah.
15:53Helen and Carl definitely have got an eye for detail and, you know, everything they find.
15:57We'll go down and feed that.
15:59Yeah.
15:59Back in the kitchen.
16:01Beautiful.
16:01Grubs up.
16:04I've got Helen.
16:05Full with poached.
16:08Full with poached.
16:09Oh, that looks lovely.
16:10And the full with fried.
16:13Oh, yeah, perfect.
16:15Perfect.
16:16Gorgeous.
16:17It's like sunshine.
16:18Nice and runny, look.
16:19Perfect eggs.
16:20My egg's not as runny as everyone else's.
16:22I do like a runny egg.
16:26The bacon is perfect for me.
16:28It's really well cooked.
16:30Everything I need, I love.
16:31It's nice, I love it.
16:32Fried bread's done well.
16:33Eggs, bacon, pies were nice.
16:35Yeah.
16:36But I'm going to go for the breakfast.
16:39Very impressed with Chef Michael.
16:41Very, very good.
16:42I didn't get my runny eggs.
16:43It's a real shame because I had a great breakfast and the main bit of yours was the egg.
16:48And they've got that wrong, so it is a real shame.
16:53Well, Carl, you're next, I'm afraid.
16:55How do you feel about that?
16:56Pretty nervous, but we're quietly confident about the offerings we have, so bring it on.
17:03Good, good.
17:04What are your biggest concerns?
17:06You guys all sound like you've got a keen eye for detail, so I'm waiting to see what you find
17:12with ours.
17:13Hope we haven't missed anything.
17:14I'll have my glasses on for that day.
17:16Yeah.
17:17Yeah.
17:17Yeah.
17:18Yeah.
17:18Yeah.
17:18Yeah.
17:19Carl and Liz are a lovely pair.
17:21This morning, you could just see the nerves starting to kick in about going to theirs next.
17:27But I think the standard is going to be high.
17:30Yeah.
17:32Scran scoffed.
17:33The guests head back to their rooms to complete their anonymous feedback forms.
17:37How were your hosts at the Three Horseshoes?
17:39They were very friendly.
17:40Has to be a 10, doesn't it?
17:42It's got to be a 10.
17:43How clean was the Three Horseshoes?
17:45The toilet brush did have blue paper on it.
17:48It dried up.
17:48I would give nine.
17:50I would give nine.
18:47But there was some maintenance needed.
18:47It was breakfast.
18:48So, one of them, perfect.
18:50Unfortunately, your poached eggs were hard.
18:54Should we go with an eight?
18:55Okay.
18:56Bang on for me.
18:58Quality products?
18:58Yeah.
18:59Yeah.
18:59It beat the pie.
19:01It beat the pie.
19:02I would score it a 10.
19:03Definitely.
19:05So, on to the all-important question.
19:07Would you stay here again?
19:08I absolutely would stay here again.
19:10Yeah, I would stay here again.
19:11I'd definitely stay here again.
19:13I'm going to bring my friends.
19:14I think with all the issues that we found, it'd have to be a no.
19:21Now, the guests must pay what they think their stay was worth.
19:24Okay, so are you happy with that?
19:26Yeah, I think that's fair.
19:27The cash will be kept secret until the end of the competition.
19:30But for now, Fiona and Michael can see if their luck was in at the Three Horseshoes.
19:36How were your hosts at the Three Horseshoes?
19:39We scored a 10.
19:40Oh, that's really good.
19:42Friendly.
19:43Great fun.
19:44Lovely.

19:57I'm very happy about that.
19:58Yeah.
19:59Are the poached eggs hard?
20:00I would have replaced them if I'd noticed.
20:02Well, I know from this order, this was Liz and Carl.
20:06Oh, yeah.
20:06Thanks so much for having us.

20:53So the last people must be Helen and Carl.
20:55Let's see what they say.
20:56How clean was the Three Horseshoes?

20:59Oh, my God.
21:00That's really low.
21:02Handprint on towel.
21:03We checked all the towels and I didn't see a handprint.
21:06Dust in the light shade.
21:07Dust in bed frame.
21:09Hair and dust in drawers and wardrobe.
21:11We dusted absolutely everywhere.
21:13And there's no hairs in those drawers.
21:16Dirty toilet.
21:17Those toilets were scrubbed.
21:19Mould in shower.
21:21Well, the showers aren't brand new, but they're very, very clean.

21:27It's a seven.
21:28I think our facilities are worth more than that.
21:30Old beams and lovely character.
21:32Well, that's very true of that, wouldn't you?
21:33Yeah, it is.
21:35Shower leaking.
21:36We'll just have a look and if it needs it, we'll fix it.
21:39Yeah.
21:40Shower clogged and painful sensation.
21:42No-one's ever described our showers as painful before.
21:46Definitely not.

22:02I'm very nervous about this one.
22:04No.
22:05I'm disappointed with that.
22:07It's their loss.
22:08I hope Helen and Carl's place is immaculate.
22:11I'm sure it will be based on these comments.
22:14Next time, when Carl and Liz host...
