00:00Austin Bruins held their end-of-season presser with Charlie Jacobs, Cam Neely, and Don Sweeney.
00:06Here is Charlie Jacobs' reaction to the season now that it is officially over.
00:12Last year when we were in this press conference, it was an awfully difficult one.
00:16And I sit here today feeling like we are on the right track.
00:22We had a 100-point season.
00:25We had the second-best record in the entire National Hockey League throughout the regular season.
00:30I'll get on to the postseason in a minute.
00:31And I feel like the words that were spoken last year at this time, the doubling down, so to speak,
00:37on behalf of Cam and Don and their leadership has started to pay off.
00:42And I feel like we've made a lot of progress this past year.
00:46And I'd like to thank them.
00:48I'd like to thank all of you, the media.
00:50And above all, I'd like to thank the fans for their support through this whole process.
00:54You could feel the electricity inside the TD Garden during our games.
00:58And that is something that I hope we can continue to build upon.
01:03We were fortunate enough to make the playoffs with a 100-point season.
01:06And I feel like we're on the right track towards becoming a real Stanley Cup contender in the future years.
01:15Okay.
01:15Well, it sounds like both of those seats, the seats occupied by Cam Neely and Don Sweeney, are not warm
01:21at all.
01:22Nowhere near hot.
01:23They are not a sauna.
01:24And so maybe just...
01:24I've never seen two guys more secure in their job for having not won a title in, what is it
01:29now, 15 years?
01:31Oh.
01:32Wow.
01:32Doesn't that play to the point, though, Sean, that Mago and Wiggy make that maybe if the fan base wasn't
01:38tolerant of these seasons, that they would be out of a job sooner?
01:41Bingo!
01:41But, I mean, I think fans have called for their jobs multiple times, especially last offseason.
01:47Yeah, when?
01:48When?
01:48Charlie Jacobs even literally said at the beginning of the statement, Wiggy, how difficult it was last year that he
01:53had to double down on Cam Neely and Don Sweeney because everybody on the planet was calling for their job
01:58last year.
01:58Oh, I must have missed that day.
02:00I must have missed that day.
02:01Yeah, she did miss that day because I said it many times.
02:04Now they're doing a victory lap about how it's paying off that they stuck with those two guys after they
02:09had a first-round exit.
02:10Charlie Jacobs says the fans aren't, though.
02:12Okay.
02:13I don't think that the majority of fans are like, yeah, everything was great, great, great job.
02:19You guys are headed in the right direction.
02:20This is great.
02:21Are you kidding?
02:22Yeah, I feel like when fans call up to complain about the Bruins, it's generally the players in some form
02:30or fashion or the coach.
02:31I don't really – it's never Cam.
02:35I don't know.
02:35Maybe a little bit of Sweeney.
02:37You get frustrated with the brass there, but I do think it's interesting that we have these two press conferences
02:44that we can compare.
02:45And one of them is somebody who's sitting up there saying, we've got to build a better roster.
02:51We see these issues that we've had for years.
02:54It's unacceptable.
02:55It's unacceptable.
02:56And the other one is we stuck with the right guys.
03:00And now, don't worry, in the next few years, we'll be on a path.
03:04The cup contention.
03:05Right.
03:06That is such a great point.
03:08It is jarring, the juxtaposition between the mood and tenor of Brad Stevens and what you just heard from Charlie
03:14James.
03:14It's just one kid has to get straight A's, and the other kid is allowed to get C pluses.
03:19And if they get a B in ceramics, it's like, we're putting this up on the fridge.
03:23Yes.
03:24You need a good kill.
03:26I feel like Joe Mazzoula's seat got a little bit warmer.
03:30Oh, it got a little toasty.
03:31Yeah.
03:32Good.
03:33Yes.
03:34Right.
03:35But you're right.
03:36There's not a lot of, and again, you know, maybe there's a little bit of grace because you had a
03:41first-time head coach in the NHL, and you feel like he's going to come along.
03:44And he seems great.
03:45Like, I do think that Sturm seems like he did a pretty good job.
03:48Yeah.
03:48I think he seemed like a good choice for this group.
03:51But who cares about a hundred-point regular season?
03:54Nobody.
03:54That's why this comment is so dumb.
03:56It's so tone-deaf.
03:58Yeah.
03:59Did Cam or Sweeney expound?
04:01Actually, maybe you'll know this.
04:03Who called the presser first yesterday?
04:06Or was this always the play?
04:07Because it seemed, Megan and I were talking about that yesterday.
04:09It was me and you.
04:10No.
04:10Or me and you.
04:11Sorry.
04:11I get you guys confused.
04:13Yeah.
04:13Or, like, if they do it on the same day on purpose.
04:16Right.
04:17Yeah.
04:18Yeah, I think they do it every year together.
04:21Because I'm pretty sure last year they do, like, their end-of-season kind of, like, autopsy on the season
04:25exit press conference.
04:27But they could have done it last year.
04:29It's probably because the Jacobs can charge both of them rent.
04:31No, but the Celtics season ended far later than the Bruins season.
04:34Oh, you mean the Celtics.
04:35I thought you meant all three of the Bruins guys together.
04:37Oh, that I don't know, Curtis.
04:38That I'm unsure of.
04:39Yeah.
04:39No, like, why they, you had these two newsworthy press conferences hours apart on the same day.
04:47Because everybody's focused on the Celtics and them losing in the first round and how horrible of a season it
04:55was.
04:55And we're sitting here picking that apart where they know that if they drop it the same day, no one's
05:02really going to pay them attention.
05:03You guys, you and Mego say this all the time.
05:05The Bruins, they did overachieve this season.
05:09Like, they did.
05:10I mean, so, you guys act like fans or me or whomever is not critical of them.
05:18They overachieved when it came to what we thought they were going to do.
05:22Didn't the Celtics overachieve?
05:24This season?
05:25In the regular season.
05:26Like, this season.
05:28In the regular season, they overachieved.
05:29It changed, Wiggy.
05:30Like, what they did in the regular season should have translated to the playoffs.
05:36At least they should have won round one.
05:39And they very easily could have.
05:40But the difference is you hear they had 100 points this season from the Bruins.
05:44And then you hear Brad Stevens say there were a lot of teams who were playing for draft picks this
05:48year.
05:49And we had success in the regular season.
05:51But maybe that doesn't indicate how good of a team we are right now.
05:54And we need to get a lot better.
05:56And Brad Stevens has won a championship here in the current role he occupies.
06:02Whereas Don Sweeney has not.
06:05So, when you point out it's been 15 years, think about it's been, what, since 2018 for the Patriots and
06:13the Red Sox.
06:13It feels like an eternity since they won.
06:16And it's half as long as the current drought for the Bruins.
06:19And the Celtics won, what, in 2022?
06:232024.
06:25They lost in 22.
06:27Okay, 2024.
06:27I'm sorry.
06:28And it seems like, man, when are the Celtics going to win another one?
06:32Right.
06:33But it is different, Wiggs.
06:34They have two top ten players in the NBA.
06:36No, no, no.
06:37I'm not talking.
06:38I'm talking.
06:39We're strictly talking about this year where they only had one of those guys.
06:42Well, yeah, but one of them came back, Wiggy.
06:44The Bruins didn't get a Jason Tatum back just after the trade deadline.
06:48They got Judd Surratt.
06:48So you get one guy who comes back off of a major injury who, if that was a Bruins player,
06:56we'd be applauding his toughness to come back and do what he did.
06:59We applauded Jason Tatum when he came back, too.
07:02I don't know what you're talking about.
07:02No, no, no.
07:03But I'm saying in the game.
07:04There's an old documentary.
07:04Especially you.
07:05You gave him a good pat on the back.
07:06No, no.
07:06That's me, though.
07:07That's me.
07:08But I'm talking about the majority.
07:10But even if that player missed the game seven, we would be applauding the fact that they were
07:14able to come back and help them get to that point.
07:17And the team wasn't able to win game seven because they just weren't able to do what they were
07:23supposed to do.
07:24Where we are criticizing, when I say we, I'm not putting myself in there, but there are
07:29a ton of people calling Tatum soft, this, and all the other stuff.
07:33Where if that was a Bruins player, we would be applauding him and saying, hey, sooner or
07:37later, you knew the guy was going to get hurt after coming back from a devastating...
07:40If he missed a game seven, we would not be applauding a Bruins player, Wiggy.
07:44If David Postonok came back from an Achilles...
07:47If Bergeron missed the first four games of the postseason...
07:49But he had two collapsed lungs.
07:51And no, we were pissed that he played in a meaningless game, but everybody's like, oh,
07:57it was for his dad.
08:00That is true.
08:01Come on, Sean.
08:02Stop it.
08:03You guys have...
08:04No, Wiggy's so right on the Bergeron thing.
08:07That was great, Wiggy.
08:08And Simon's so fraudulent.
08:10Wiggy, we ran the poll.
08:11We know I'm not fraudulent.
08:13You're the fraudulent one.
08:14Yes, you are.
08:15Because nobody said that.
08:16I was like, oh, what do you expect?
08:17This is his last game in Montreal.
08:20That's more...
08:20Nobody said this.
08:21Oh, my God.
08:22Oh, are you kidding me?
08:23I asked Patrice Bergeron about that, and you would have thought I asked the Pope how
08:28we like to have sex.
08:30Oh, my goodness.
08:30That's Patrice Bergeron.
08:32That's not the fans.
08:32Can you imagine Jason Tatum getting hurt in a meaningless regular season game because
08:38he wanted to play in front of his moms in St. Louis?
08:41Like, that would be...
08:42I mean, that is such a...
08:43I said it was selfish, and Dale thought I insulted his mom.
08:47Like, I just...
08:48I don't...
08:49You guys have an illogical hate when it comes to the Bruins.
08:53No, it's not a logical hate.
08:54I'm just...
08:55That's too far.
08:56No, it's not an illogical hate.
08:57I'm just calling it what it is.
09:00He missed the first four games of the playoffs when they lost to Tampa Bay...
09:03Excuse me, Florida that season because he played in a meaningless game in Montreal, and
09:09when we try to criticize it, people are jumping down our throats saying, well, it's Bergeron.
09:15Give him grace.
09:16It swore his dad.
09:17And then when he hurt his back and then he missed the first four games, nobody was like,
09:22oh, my God.
09:22What are we doing here?
09:24Why'd you...
09:24No, you're right.
09:24Nobody was calling him soft, but it's a different scenario.
09:29I mean, the guy had a collapsed lung.
09:31No, he had a back issue.
09:33Yeah, no, but prior to that, at the end, he had to go to the hospital.
09:38Yeah.
09:38You know...
09:39It's your hand specialist.
09:41It's not knee soreness that kept him out.
09:44Yeah, but we're not talking about his collapsed lung, though.
09:47It's a completely different thing.
09:48Yeah, but we're not talking about the year with the collapsed lung.
09:51Like, Greg, we just heard eight players that had injuries.
09:54If you're injured and you play through it, all right, great, but we don't need to hear
09:58about it when you lose.
10:00Let's go to a guy who Wiggy doesn't think gets enough criticism that we don't direct our
10:04ire to.
10:05That would be Cam Neely.
10:06Your big question this season is, why didn't they ever name a captain?
10:09What's going on with the captain thing?
10:11Neely was asked about that yesterday.
10:13Here was Cam Neely.
10:14I think, obviously, we would love to name a captain, but we've had some great captains here,
10:21so one of the things that we want to do is make sure we're picking the right guy, and
10:25Marco's going to be a big part of that.
10:27So having a new coach come in and implementing a new system, getting to know the players,
10:32I think it only made sense to see how the season played out, and then we're going to
10:36have plenty.
10:37We've already started discussions about that, for sure, and we're going to have plenty
10:40more in this offseason.
10:42Huh.
10:42So going into the season, he's correct.
10:46Wiggy, you love Ray Bork.
10:48You feel like it's one of the greatest honors of your life to know Ray and get to hang with
10:53Ray.
10:54So there have been great captains here, but going into the season, they didn't feel
10:59like anybody on this team was worthy of that legacy.
11:03Greg, question for you.
11:05If you believe the original Rich Keef scoop, was this an overreaction to Marchand's captaincy
11:13and the chaos that created?
11:15How so?
11:17Like, so Marchand, they just quickly, as soon as Bergeron goes out, they make Marchand the
11:22next captain, and then the rift that grew between Marchand and Pasternak affected the
11:26locker room, and they didn't want to just immediately promote a new captain, especially a guy coming
11:31out of a, or not a tussle, but like a disagreement in the locker room to that position.
11:37I just think it's an indictment of McAvoy and Pasta.
11:39I think that's what it is.
11:41I think that's fair.
11:41And they don't believe that for whatever reason, I'm sure there's separate reasons, that they
11:45are at that level.
11:47And the thing for me is, if you don't believe McAvoy is that, your number one, what is
11:52he, like top 10 defenseman paid annually, Shyam?
11:54I don't know.
11:55Yeah, he's up there.
11:56So one of the highest paid defensemen in the NHL should be your captain.
12:00On a team that is properly run, properly built.
12:03And if you don't think he's that, then why'd you give him that deal?
12:06Oh, Curtis, he's walking right by there.
12:08You can ask him.
12:08He is.
12:09He's right here.
12:10Be careful, Curtis.
12:12You got the elevator with him yesterday.
12:15Candidly, I couldn't tell you a Bruin if they punched me in the face.
12:17We might find that out right now.
12:19Because you could be one of the highest paid players in the league and not necessarily
12:22have those captain qualities.
12:25I would say look at the list of the highest paid defensemen in the NHL and count how many are
12:29not a captain on their team.
12:30I mean, I'd have to go through the list.
12:32But I mean, you could find guys like that throughout the end.
12:34I mean, David Posinak's one of the highest paid forwards in the league.
12:36And he's not a captain.
12:38That's what he's saying.
12:39Right.
12:39Defenseman Chara.
12:40Defenseman Bork.
12:41Yeah, I mean, I'd have to go through the guys right now and who's up there getting paid.
12:45But I just, I feel like maybe, you know, you know, there's growth to come with it.
12:50And hockey's completely different.
12:51And I learned that from Ray Bork that, you know, it's not who the guys think is the captain
12:57or who they would, you know, assign the seat to the jersey.
13:01It's the coaches that have a big part of, you know, deciding who becomes captain.
13:07So, Curtis, to be fair, the only captain in the top 10 highest paid defenseman is Rasmus
13:12Darlene, I believe.
13:13Right.
13:13I had Rasmus, but you're looking at the AP.
13:15I need the CBT.
13:16That was the mass live.
13:17Yeah, no, no, I'm looking at that list.
13:18I'll text my husband.
13:20What's Cole, is it, what's the kid Cole McCaw, right?
13:22He's one of the highest paid defensemen.
13:24Cale McCaw.
13:24Cale McCaw.
13:24Is he one of the highest paid defensemen?
13:25He's tied for 13th.
13:27Oh, okay.
13:28Also, he's not the captain on that team.
13:30Right, that's my point.
13:31Yeah, that was the point I was making.
13:33He's one of the best.
13:33Right, Landis Cog is the captain.
13:34That's right.
13:36Curtis is a huge puck guy.
13:38I mean, I gotta tell you.
13:39That's the encyclopedic knowledge of the sport.
13:41I got a piece of chicken Landis Cog in my throat right now.
13:44We had a little chicken yesterday.
13:45Oh, Greg, I gotta tell you.
13:46You gotta tell me at the airport.
13:47Wild.
13:48I was shocked.
13:49I basically had to waterboard you to have a waffle fry.
13:52Yeah.
13:52You had the grilled chicken sandwich.
13:54We went to Chick-fil-A.
13:55Chick-fil-A.
13:56What a great addition to the Logan Airport scene.
13:58And also, huge supporter of our beneficiaries at the Greg Hill Foundation.
14:02So, I like to mention them and thank them.
14:05And I like to patronize them when at the airport.
14:07Totally.
14:07And anything you do at the airport is usually like a war zone.
14:11Like, people aren't rude, but they have to be sort of cold because there's 500 people asking for the same
14:16thing.
14:17Chick-fil-A service, spectacular.
14:18My order was repeated back to me.
14:20Never happened at the airport.
14:21And then I sit down.
14:22I'm having my number one, just crispy chicken.
14:25And Greg's having a grilled chicken and no fries.
14:31And I said to Lindsey when we got here, I go, he's going to be wasting away.
14:34She's like, no way.
14:35He didn't have fries.
14:36I'm like, I swear to God.
14:37It's the whoop age.
14:38It's the whoop age.
14:39That thing has me shook.
14:41It should.
14:41I'm shook at the 69 and a half years old whoop age.
14:45That's no fried chicken for me.
14:47No fried chicken.
14:48Fried chicken.
14:49It was weird that you took the butt off, too.
14:51It was weird that you took the butt off, too.
14:51It was weird that you took the butt off, too.
14:51It was weird that you took the butt off, too.
14:51It was weird that you took the butt off, too.
14:51It was weird that you took the butt off, too.
