00:00the american football coaches association voted to recommend several big changes to the college
00:05football playoff format college football coaches is from cbs sports college football coaches are
00:11moving forward in favor of a maximum playoff expansion potentially to 24 teams along with
00:17several other sweeping changes across the sport uh the afca voted last week to recommend increasing
00:25the college football playoff bracket as the american football coaches association yes
00:30have voted to move the uh college football playoff bracket to the maximum number of teams and do away
00:36with conference championship games uh they will end the season during the second week of january to
00:44protect the army navy games exclusive time window so they'll still have playoff games on that day but
00:50what they won't do is compete against the army navy game which i think is cool that's that's this
00:56their proposal anyway yeah um so they're they're they're apparently now are in agreement there was
01:02a time there where the big 10 wanted 24 teams and the sec wanted 16 um i'm a little irritated
01:12by this
01:12if for there's for a few reasons one is we barely even let our current system breathe we just switched
01:22to this we're just getting used to this and now you basically want to double it and it might be
01:29great
01:31but this it goes back to something that's happened in in a lot of college sports and it's led to
01:37the
01:37absurdity of rutgers and ucla being in the same conference
01:44short-term money grabs to hell with the long-term consequences
01:49and yeah the big 10 the commissioner can claim record amounts of money being brought in and those
01:56record amounts of money are being turned into healthier athletic departments which can afford the new dynamic
02:03of the collegiate game but the 2014 playoff really when you start talking about three and maybe four
02:15lost teams making the postseason i think they are truly doing damage to the best what i have deemed what
02:25i think is the best regular season in sports now others can debate whether or not that's the case or
02:30whether they believe that's the case or not when they went to the 14 playoff it was like okay
02:38but don't get carried away expanding it and it's taken like five years for us to get to 24 teams
02:45isn't the most predictable thing ever and i you know the big 10 wanted more teams big 10's gotta
02:53the way the system's set up right now it's been extraordinarily healthy for the big 10
02:59however at what cost here are they looking at the long term because because you know one of the
03:06great things about college football the intensity each and every week and there is you can't lose
03:12too many times now you can lose they're going to be 14 four lost teams that make the postseason
03:18and i think it could be i suspect that there will be there'll definitely be three lost teams well that
03:24that's for sure um if they adopt these proposals i i'm with you i think that the expansion is getting
03:30to be too much but there are parts of this that i would agree with and i think you might
03:34even agree
03:35with some of this stuff um even if it's just something as simple as let's protect the army navy
03:40game and have playoff games on that day but we're going to not interfere with that timeline that game's
03:45on from noon to three or noon to 3 30 we're not going to schedule a playoff game at that
03:49time i think
03:50that's fine that's easy um wanting to make sure that the calendar ends on a certain day like a week
03:56earlier than what the championship game is that makes sense because it's more in line with semesters
04:01and when school years start for um for the second semester i'm in favor of that the idea that you're
04:09going to get rid of conference championship games is interesting to me because i think the reason i would
04:16want to do it is i think the conference championship games are kind of useless if you're having all
04:21these teams in the playoff so i sort of understand that and at the same time it does give you
04:27a great
04:28game in theory most of the conference championship games are a really good matchup they're not always
04:34like look at the acc championship last year was not this great matchup um but it's also an
04:40opportunity when you have these super conferences that have 18 or 20 teams in it like the big 10
04:47that you know of course you're not going to schedule all the teams in the season so you're going you
04:51you have a possibility of ending up with a matchup that you haven't seen and then that's a way to
04:56determine who the best team is so i'm not sure i want to get rid of the conference championship
05:00i'm open to it um but the other thing is that you want to eliminate one of the bye weeks
05:09and i don't know if i agree with that these are still college kids these aren't professionals
05:15and you're talking about adding more games to a schedule for the good teams where it actually
05:20becomes a professional schedule where they're playing 15 games maybe 16 games i don't know if
05:27i'm in favor of that and i just there's a lot that still needs to be worked out i think
05:32it's
05:32interesting the coaches come up with this there's a writer a columnist named john wilner who tweeted
05:38this out yesterday he says periodic reminder the very last the very last college football cohort
05:43whose opinion should matter in college football in the college football playoff and calendar decisions
05:48is head coaches so that's a column is very upset coaches because they're they're very selfish only
05:53out for the room and this would indicate some of that like if you're going to take away a bye
05:58week
05:58what why well it's money of course everything comes down to money um i think a lot still has to
06:06be
06:06hashed out and i certainly wouldn't adopt all these proposals but i think they're worthy of discussion
06:11the idea of going from 12 playoff teams to 24 is absurd to me you know you're going even to
06:2016 i don't i
06:21don't like it i know there's always teams that feel like they were left out great be better there's
06:25always going to be you're always going to have that right you had it with four you had it when
06:30they didn't i mean it doesn't you're always going to have discussion about it but you can't have
06:34the ncaa tournament that they do in basketball and have that replace the system we have in college
06:40football i don't like the idea of expanding i think it's inevitable it's going to go to 16
06:46but if it goes to 24 i'm really going to 24 24 seems like it's way too much and like
06:51you said
06:51you might bring in the prospect of having a four loss team compete for a national championship
06:57and how does that make sense i just looked back at the previous year's college football playoff
07:03rankings if you include a couple automatic bids like that that might be outside the top 24 like
07:09the group of five teams even if you and i went with two automatic bids to just try and take
07:16away and
07:16not overestimate in 2023 four different four loss teams would have made a 2014 playoff field
07:23and and like it's not the end of the world but the college football regular season when you can
07:30potentially lose up to four games and still make the playoffs that intensity week to week is really
07:37going to be watered down and then i'm not into because you know what barely moves the needle
07:44college basketball regular season it barely does right and the other thing i'm wondering okay does
07:49this all replace bowl games are we doing away with bowl games now probably um but i don't know i
07:55mean
07:55that's money and here's the thing they are but they do get tv ratings and because they get tv ratings
08:00it just it you know what it does to bowl games it means the matchups are worse you're going to
08:04get a
08:05lot more liberty versus smu well i chose those two i don't know well um instead of though seeing some
08:12of
08:12those are teams that have deserved the college football playoff over the last couple years yeah
08:17maybe but you're going to get more like minnesota taking on arizona yeah yeah the other thing is
08:24what's going to happen with live golf here um there is it it sounds like some of the bigger names
08:30and live
08:31are starting to look at alternative career moves than going back to the pga because the pga is not
08:37welcoming them welcoming welcoming them back with open arms bryson de chambeau says he's going to
08:43focus on his youtube channels growth john rom has joined the european tour the dp world tour
08:51um and and they're garnering some sympathy and some people want to see him back and one of the reasons
08:56why i didn't like live is because it took many of the best golfers away from the events that i
09:01wanted
09:01to watch week in and week out but now do i want them back immediately personally no and i don't
09:12have
09:12a lot of sympathy they made a business decision the business option that they chose has either gone out
09:18of business or is going to be a shell of what it once was that happens in the real world
09:25you make
09:26business decisions you make career decisions and sometimes they are decisions and i'm not going to
09:31say it's a bad decision but it might come with consequences that you aren't welcome back at your
09:36old employer and they are you know they got paid which obviously mattered and it matters to everybody
09:43whether you disagree with the you know the league or whatever that was their business decision there's
09:50not a lot of sympathy here today if they are not welcome back to their old employer well i wonder
09:54what
09:54the penalties should be and what the punishment should be i mean if ram and de chambeau who are
10:00the two most prominent golfers on the live tour uh the two biggest names that i'd like i'd like to
10:06see
10:06them back on the pga tour but i also want there to be a penalty assessed for them leaving the
10:13pga tour
10:13to take the money grab and it's fine you took the money grab it's hard to turn down the ridiculous
10:19sums
10:19of money they were throwing at you it's really hard um but you'd made that decision
10:24so i'm thinking out loud spitballing it what would i want i think maybe you ban them from pga events
10:31for a full year i have them pay a five million dollar fine or something the donation to charity
10:36whatever it's going to be um and then you can welcome them on the tour in 2028 so maybe it's
10:42a year and a half man yeah maybe um in the meantime the idea that lives trying to hang on
10:48without the money that supported it but some of these players and live might be under contract
10:54might be playing in even lesser events with lesser fields and lesser prize money and and less well
11:02they've already been paid yeah but i think they i think they go crazy under those basically playing a
11:07minor league tour with minor league paydays but it's carson anderson 97 one
