00:00talking about the expansion of the college football playoff you know 16 seemed like a
00:06pretty good number and then everybody wants to jump now to 24 and wildly bill even some of the
00:13staunchest staunchest staunchest defenders in opposition of that they've seemed to come around
00:22now i don't know if there's they're microdosing and gaslighting people giving them some kool-aid
00:26to drink but everybody seems to be coming around even some of the sec coaches your thoughts
00:36on what expansion looks like to 24 and is that the number and what kind of case are we making
00:43well um so i i use an analogy like i don't know if if your kids are doing it but
00:49the hacky sack is
00:50back right oh my my son made one out of a sock so so it's back so it that leads
00:56into you know
00:58that if you're told something is cool enough then it then then it's gonna come you know like you're
01:05gonna do it and i think that's what we're doing with this 2014 playoff there we're being told
01:09gradually microdose is a great word too because every time you hear it you're like at first you're
01:14like no no never and now we're to the point where it might be okay and speaking of hacky sacks
01:20the
01:20comparison we made was back in the 1990s when i was in high school you know ohio high school football
01:26is a great case study for what could happen if you expand too much too fast like when i was
01:32in high
01:32school we were talking about it hate to be that guy it was four teams per region they expanded to
01:37eight teams per region and 32 per division which was probably in my opinion the equivalent of a 16 team
01:44college football playoffs that would be about the same it was that felt right then we go to everybody
01:49for a year and 16 team teams yeah before we jump in because that's eight teams is where it was
01:55most of
01:56my during my high school tenure a lot of my dad's coaching tenure and in the eight team system in
02:01ohio is four teams per region 32 total teams got in per division and it felt like hey there were
02:08going
02:08to be some good teams that were occasionally left out and they had a point system so it wasn't you
02:13know subjective but there were always a couple good teams maybe in a year that got left out but
02:18very rarely were there really bad teams getting in and just ultra blowouts in the first round between
02:24the one and eight seats you had pretty competitive games well i was gonna ask you so in division one
02:29which where you played like eight and two would get you in eight and two mostly a really good seven
02:36seven and three record would get you in right i think my dad even got in one year at six
02:41and four
02:41because the six teams they beat all were playoff teams like so they end up they had a super loaded
02:48schedule so they got the benefit of the doubt squeaked in is like the eighth seed barely but usually
02:53eight and two gets you in a really good seven and three if you played a tough schedule and and
02:58that's
02:58my senior year we got in at seven and three but we played a tough schedule we we you know
03:03we played the other
03:03central catholic league schools we played granville who was very good that year um and uh no but the
03:10the point being as we expanded this thing uh by the way i remind people that we played granville and
03:16those central catholic league schools all the time but uh by the time we got so like my senior year
03:23like i'm saying six divisions 90 16 makes the playoffs when we expanded to 16 in ohio you had
03:2916 divisions um or it's not 16 divisions seven divisions 16 16 schools per region and it adds up
03:38to 448 high schools make the playoff and like you said what did that lead to blowouts and non-competitive
03:45first and second round games a longer season and i was thinking well that sounds familiar that could
03:51happen if we get a 2014 playoff where teams like iowa and georgia tech while competitive i mean bobby they
03:57weren't playoff caliber teams i mean one lost four games and one couldn't stop anybody the end of the
04:03season so i i think that's the danger of like you said if we go to 24 from 12 without
04:10at least trying
04:1116 first a similar situation could happen that happened with the ohsa where they actually like
04:16you said you were it's great observation that how many playoff formats contract and ohsa has got to
04:23be one of the few that has
04:24you
