00:04Today on the show the best campfire potatoes you've ever had. Braving the
00:09weather for a few Gold Coast catches and later on footy season is back as Cam
00:16Rainer joins us for a day on the green. First what makes a campground the best
00:22hip camp in the country? Let's find out. I'm Jana and I'm Ryan and we're in the beautiful
00:29area of Imbil. We run a hip camp called Maluka Park. In 2025 we were lucky enough to win best
00:37hip camp
00:38in Australia which absolutely you know blew us away we were we were really honoured and
00:45quite surprised but yeah. We can't believe it but we did.
00:52Maluka Park is our family farm and we've been here for 34 years and originally started with
00:59drought master cattle and Arabian horses we're breeding them and then we progressed to camping
01:07105 acres and we've got a kilometre of Yabba Creek frontage and yeah it's we just love it it's a
01:15beautiful spot. Heaps of space between all the campsites and most people love that
01:24and the green grass they just love the green grass and there's no bindi's they don't like bindi's.
01:29We've got a beautiful bush walk up in there and I look out on top of the hill you can
01:34see all the
01:34campsite and all the mountains around and the kayaks and the kayaks. We select different sites as they
01:41book them in for if they've got caravan or they've got a motorhome or they've just got tents or whatever
01:46they've got and we put the caravans in their positions and the motorhomes in their positions
01:51and the tents take whatever position they want. You're not camped on top of each other you've got so much
01:56room
01:59I think also people feel safe here you know we're tucked away down the back we greet everyone that
02:07comes in so we meet every single person that comes to camp and we take them to their site and
02:12we explain
02:13a little bit about the campsite and the rules and regulations and I think it's that personal touch too.
02:24You've got Lake Barumba so lots of things to do in the in the local area.
02:32So when I when we do the when we go out training the horses I was going up the roadway
02:38and in summer
02:39it's so hot and I said to Brian I am going to plant a row of trees so that when
02:43we go out riding
02:44we're in the shade especially when we come home.
02:54You do meet all sorts yeah different nationalities here a lot of times and
02:59people where they're from yeah. I've got another fun up the road and been up there all day and
03:04don't see anybody and something goes wrong real bad and just leave it behind and come home here and
03:10walk down there and talk to some campers and just completely forget about what I was doing and
03:14go back the next day and have another go at it that's all but that works really good for me
03:18to
03:19get out and meet people. I think I think a lot of people that have actually camped here in summer
03:24have said you know we're coming back in winter um and of course the campfire gets you know they love
03:29a campfire it's a bit hard in summer when it's 38 degrees and it's the humidity's high but winter's
03:35just as good as the summer really but the the water's a bit colder that's the only difference
03:45If you ask us there's not a lot that can cure campsite hunger like a good campfire cook-up
03:51cooking over coals just makes everything taste better add a camp oven into the mix and you're
03:56really cooking the key to a good camp oven though is the cow i'm sure there are plenty of camp
04:02ovens
04:03out there that have stood the test of time as we know if you look after your cast iron it'll
04:08look
04:08after you after you've used your camp oven for dinner or in my case a damper there's a few things
04:14you
04:14should know before launching into cleaning it all right first tip don't use detergent it actually eats
04:20away at all the oils inside the cast iron and absorbs into the pores so the next curry that you
04:25make
04:25is going to taste like soap all you need to do is get some water to rinse it out and
04:30a gentle brush
04:31or some paper towel to remove any stuck on bits once that's nice and dry get yourself a bit of
04:36cooking oil and a paper towel and lightly coat the inside of the oven you can also do this with
04:41spray
04:42and that's it easy as that ready for your next trip

04:56over the fire crispy camp potatoes coming up after the break
05:06it's that time of year and the weather's cooling down and that means for me
05:11campfire cooking and i love cooking over the flames we're going to be doing the world's best
05:16crispy campfire potato there's a little trick i'll show you in a sec
05:25typically you would put your potatoes in cold water and bring them to the boil in cold water and that's
05:30so you're going to even cook throughout your potato but today we want to make the outside of our potatoes
05:35as soft as possible so we're going to get them into boiling water a nice pinch of salt because
05:40you want to season those potatoes really well through the whole cooking stage now the secret
05:47ingredient to this dish is bicarb soda and what that does is it makes the water really alkaline
05:52and the alkaline breaks down the starch in the potato on the outside of the potato it makes like a
05:56starch paste and that becomes really really really crispy when you fry them off
06:05lid on 10 to 15 minutes
06:11you can see that broken up a fair bit the skin has released itself from the actual potato itself
06:20and then we're just going to go in with the potatoes be careful now you want this quite hot
06:26and we're going to go seasoning again so we season the water we're going to season
06:31the actual flesh of the potatoes now really important part
06:37key to cooking your sausages on a skillet is not too hot you can't really go too low unless there's
06:44no
06:44heat at all but if you go too hot you're going to burn the outside and you're not going to
06:48cook on
06:48the inside and you do not want that
06:54always have veggies on hand so i've just got a few baby capsicums here i'm just going to throw them
06:59in
06:59with the pork sausages
07:05so with canned cooking it's not always about heat heat heat you want to be able to modify and temper
07:10your heat a little bit so that's why we've got the steak here and what that does it is allows
07:15us to
07:15bring these up and down we want to give those potatoes enough time to get really crispy
07:20we don't want them to burn you can see there now they're just going so crispy
07:27just before you finish cooking into the potatoes you want chopped parsley
07:30a bit of rosemary and some garlic cloves just to bring out those flavors
07:41so they're those skins that i said to leave on they kind of fall off and they just create
07:44these little bits of extra crispy potato which is what we want
07:54and that there ladies and gentlemen is the world's best campfire crispy potatoes
07:58pork sausage and a bit of veg the perfect winter snack
08:04gold coast is known for its glitz and glamour big loud and fun and that energy doesn't stop its
08:10surface paradise water parks bars pools it's a great location across the road from movie world top
08:18golf and wet and wild everything's nice and clean get dry washing machine good water park good community
08:25good food it's great and there's really big slides there too so you don't have to go to wet and
08:31wild you
08:31just have fun if you wanted to so we've got a 200 series and then a lotus trooper 236 and
08:38we bought the
08:39caravan about about a month ago just for camping and exploring around australia and just a bit of family
08:48activity so we have a hammock over there we have our chairs kind of set up here this is kind
08:54of where
08:54we eat dinner at night we put a projector up there sometimes for movies just before bed
09:02yeah we like to ride around a lot to the jumping pillow and pool and things
09:09we're in a camper trailer before that so it's nice to have the luxury before that was a tent yes
09:25oh i got one what's yours actually i don't have one oh i know what millie's is loki loki

10:05the weather may not be ideal but when has that stopped me my man with good mate beau sawyer
10:13so we've just left jacob's world we've traveled 15 minutes yeah a lot very far
10:18mate down to the flat here now we're going to chase a species today that we both regard like i
10:22reckon it's the most targeted species the families probably chasing the rivers and creeks
10:26absolutely and we're using soft plastics we are mate
10:32we're on the flats targeting uh well flathead so what's going to happen as that tide goes up all
10:39that bait fish all those bait fish are going to push up into those mangroves
10:42so those flathead are going to sit along these mangrove lines yep and what's going to happen
10:46soon hopefully as that tide runs out that bait has to move off as well yeah and that's when the
10:51flathead will feed very hard along that edge smacking all the bait that's coming over well usually you
10:56want to try and match the hatch so whatever size bait you see flicking that's the lure you want to
11:00throw
11:01we've been seeing a lot of bait sort of in that size at the moment so that's why we're using
11:04those
11:05little three inch z-mans really good consistent lure in that color as well so motor oil or midnight oil
11:11okay really good color oh yes that's a monster mate
11:23that was a 80 plus unfortunately right that was huge
11:28unlucky what what what did we do wrong there nothing mate sometimes they're just better than us
11:34i guess the timing just has to be right in southeast queensland i actually prefer those cooler months
11:41mate when that water temps a bit lower um so that june to july is excellent time to get plenty
11:46of numbers
11:47yeah and then we get a really good spawning bite around september october when the fish actually head
11:52out quite deep
11:57he's well hooked bro okay yeah there he is come on little fella come on into the net
12:07oh okay well i'm gonna take that because yes it's raining i've brought the weather with us
12:13and as you saw a little bit earlier bow is estimating on my hook one in hot like high 80s
12:19yeah it was a proper fish proper fish and i haven't been able to get over it disappointment so now
12:24i've
12:24got this nice little one but i'm still happy they've got two very nasty spikes here on their head so
12:30you want to keep your hand away from there and what we do is we just there's a little indent
12:34in there i
12:35can press on it and that'll actually subdue the fish a little bit and get that hook out
12:41it that's it that's my little flatty so the rough rule of thumb is you want to fish light enough
12:48that
12:48you can still get to the bottom so we're running one six here which will comfortably get on the bottom
12:53because we're only fishing in about a meters water yeah we could go a bit lighter mate but in that
12:57one
12:57six especially in this wind we want something a tiny bit heavier and rain yeah yeah we're copying it all
13:08at the moment mate you're fishing me a bit here wow well look i'll start i'm swimming come on come

13:14come on we want you yeah baby yeah baby yes baby oh it's all been worth it except for my
13:25poor cameraman as
13:26you can probably see there's a bit of water on the lens but uh when you come with a good

13:31come out this good stage of the tide we've got a lovely flathead suppose gonna give me mid 50s
13:35for this one but uh that's it that is a good quality flathead oh this is a better one excuse

13:41i'm trying to tilt to the creature coast family over the top of me oh he's got a nice big
13:48grunter
13:49that'll do oh he's a good grunter he is mate wow take that geez he took off at the start
13:55yeah i mean by
13:57catch obviously when you're chasing flathead this is one species you can get yeah well that's the
14:01great thing about chasing flathead mate you never know what you're going to pull up everything like
14:04those three inch plastic so yeah it's true trevally jack's bit of everything you'll find everything
14:11you need to chase a flathead and more at your local bcf or on their website

15:30but um i guess you know we found a really good thing last year where we could control that and
15:35and turn it into confidence and energy for us and i guess that's what goes over the line
15:41over the line and back-to-back premierships a team at the top of their game needs a training
15:47facility to match brighton homes arena is located here in ipswich so i'm sure you've got out and about
15:53and discovered the beautiful city yeah it's awesome being out here for two years now which is
15:58unbelievable the facility out here is unreal the lovely golf course across the road which is where
16:02we spend most of our time and our day off it is awesome as well it's been great being out

16:06it the layout of brookwater golf course is all thanks to the great greg norman and camp knows his way

19:33cam's right foot will be put to better use in this year's afl season as the lions try to equal
