00:03Today on the show, a go-anywhere prize package.
00:06A car, a caravan, a stack of gold bullion worth over a half a million dollars.
00:12And monster whiting under the cover of darkness.
00:15Look at that thing.
00:16Wow, I haven't caught quality whiting like this for a long, long time.
00:22First, the perfect country retreat.
00:28My name's Dean.
00:29I'm the groundskeeper here at Imbilk Country Cabins.
00:33Keeping it nice is definitely worthwhile.
00:40Arriving at Imbilk Country Cabins and walking into the cabin and everything that you need is there.
00:45All four cabins are set up to have their own individual view of the creek.
00:50Expectation of a bit of country living.
00:52It's a step away from the city.
00:54You turn up and it's just so laid back and relaxed.
00:58And quiet and peaceful.
01:00And come and sit under, you know, our hundred plus year old fig tree.
01:04And we've got our mango tree around there with our chairs under it as well.
01:10You can go and sit down by the creek and just watch the platypus or the turtles.
01:18It's been in the family since the 60s.
01:21Karen and Donny used to, they're the owners, they used to come up as kids to their auntie and uncle's
01:27cattle farm.
01:28And, yeah, just, it's a real sense of family and that's also what they've tried to create with the cabins
01:36and the space that they've provided.
01:42We've got Rumba Dam close by.
01:44A lot of people come here and fish.
01:45They bring their boats and, you know, we get the same people coming back year after year to go on
01:50their fishing holidays.
01:52Have Kenilworth not too far, which is a really good destination.
01:56Plenty of, plenty of waterfalls, creeks, some good swimming holes, but also local produce.
02:01Yeah, I think the appeal is, you know, Imble being so close to everything, people can just come and, you
02:07know, haven't got to spend days driving somewhere.
02:09They can just hop in their car and they're an hour or so away, but it feels like you're a
02:14million miles away.
02:15Yeah, nice to sort of come back of an afternoon after you might have done your day trips out into
02:20the hinterland somewhere
02:21and just come back and get together for a meal and sit around the fire and take in the stars
02:26and the tranquility.
02:34I consider myself very lucky to grow up in Queensland, but because of the vast nature of the state,
02:40it's not very often that I get to go inland and explore the outback.
02:44Well, today is the day and I couldn't be more excited.
02:52We're going west to Quilby.
02:55I tell you what, this is the way to do it.
02:58Driving the Apollo, just lapping up the scenery.
03:03These roads are incredible.
03:05Like, so I'm from New Zealand, so yes, we have long stretches of road, but nothing like this.
03:09It's never anything.
03:10The road is straight, as far as the eye can see.
03:13Off into the horizon.
03:15Yeah, it's almost like an oasis up there.
03:18It's like, is there an end in sight?
03:20Yeah, it turns into a mirage at some point.
03:22I'm not sure what I'm seeing.
03:28Even the drive is entertaining, but the destination is a whole other ball game.
03:37Tonight, we're at the Lake Quilby, a place with a tale to tell, and this man knows that story best.
03:46Hello.
03:46G'day, how are you?
03:47Dead, is it?
03:48It is.
03:48Oh, g'day, I'm Liz.
03:50Nice to meet you, Liz.
03:51Nice to meet you.
03:52G'day, how are you?
03:53Good.
03:53Welcome to the lake.
03:54We've been so excited to arrive.
03:55This is the furthest southwest either of us have been.
03:58Oh, excellent.
03:59No, great to have you both here.
04:01So, you're pretty keen for a four-wheel drive tour?
04:03Yeah, absolutely.
04:04I'd love to see the lay of the land.
04:06Yep, righty-o, let's go.
04:07Yay!
04:11I promise the trip isn't all this bumpy.
04:13Oh, wow, look at this, it's amazing.
04:16This is some of their unpowered camby, right on the lake.
04:22Oh, my gosh, they've got so much character.
04:26Hello, bud.
04:27Hello.
04:28You want to go exploring?
04:29Kalaharis are the dark reds.
04:31Uh-huh, so that guy over there?
04:32Yep.
04:32And this guy here?
04:34Yep.
04:34So, these are actually a breed from South Africa.
04:37Bought over there to crossbreed with one of our Australians.
04:40Crossbreed with the Australian rangeland goats.
04:43Bread for their meat.
04:46Good appetite on them too.
04:48Absolutely.
04:49You just want cuddles.
04:51Oh, my gosh, can you come home with me?
04:52I'm smitten.
04:54I'm smitten.
04:55I think you'd get on really well with my kids.
04:57It might just be a bit hard on your garden.
04:59That's the only problem.
05:05What do you love so much about calling this home?
05:09I guess it's just the wide open spaces and the freedom.
05:12Yeah, no, it's a fantastic place to live.
05:14I imagine no day would be the same.
05:16No, we're always doing something different.
05:18And, yeah, heaps of surprises.
05:21Today's surprise, a visit from this guy.
05:26No, he's a pet.
05:28Oh, my gosh.
05:29Yeah.
05:31This is Damo, the extra-friendly emu.
05:35And I think that's our cue to get back in the bus.
05:43And if that's got you keen on a road trip,
05:45Gary's up next with a trailer tip to keep you on the road.
05:59Regular viewers of the show would have seen me
06:01wash the boat, trailer, motor, plenty of times.
06:04And I've always said it's a good idea to do it yourself
06:07because when you're doing it,
06:08you pick up anything that might be a problem.
06:10It could be a bit of corrosion,
06:12you know, a loose battery terminal, anything like that.
06:14Well, I had a classic example myself over the holidays.
06:17So what our problem was is this back seal failed.
06:22Just wear and tear over the years.
06:23You can see the rust had already started to form
06:25on the inside, but we don't see that.
06:27That actually goes the axle through that,
06:30and that's the seal on the back of the hub.
06:32That lets water in.
06:33Then, of course, your bearings rust.
06:35So this is the one that has just started to let us down.
06:39It would have been sitting there in the garage
06:42for a month or two.
06:43A bit of salt water would have got in down the bottom
06:46so it's rusted, but when we've gone, it's freed itself.
06:50But a couple of those pins there are bent.
06:52If you come in nice and close, you'll see that.
06:55So I'm not going to go through the whole process
06:57of showing you how to put it back in,
06:59but I am going to show you a little tip
07:01of how to put a couple of the components back in.
07:04So this is our rear racer,
07:07but these are very difficult,
07:08or can be very difficult, to get in and out.
07:11This is an old one.
07:12Let's have a look what you can do to this old one
07:14to make life easier to punch that new one in.
07:17Let's slip over to the grinder.
07:20This is why I like to think twice
07:22before throwing anything out.
07:25And the short answer to your question is,
07:27yes, that does get hot,
07:28so you put it down, do it a bit at a time.
07:31No, I'm not going to put gloves on
07:32with a turning wheel.
07:35So remember this is an old hub,
07:37so I haven't taken the old one out,
07:38but to give you an idea of what I'm talking about,
07:41you would put in your new racer,
07:44in like that,
07:44put a bit of, smear a bit of grease around it,
07:47and then to punch that in,
07:49the one that I've just ground down,
07:51put that on top,
07:54good solid rock of wood,
07:58punch that in,
08:00you need to get it a little bit more,
08:04and just knock that in.
08:06And that one hasn't got stuck in there.
08:09Same goes for the other side.
08:11Front one,
08:12your old one,
08:14ground that down,
08:15and again,
08:15you can get that nice
08:16and punch that in,
08:18and it just comes back out,
08:19doesn't get stuck in.
08:20And if you're going to do your long trip,
08:22again,
08:22whether it's your caravan,
08:23or your boat,
08:24or your camper,
08:25you can buy these kits
08:26that come,
08:27get a good quality one,
08:28and everything comes in the kit,
08:30pre-pack all that,
08:31then you've got a spare.
08:32If ever you've got to do it,
08:33it makes it a lot easier to get it out,
08:35especially on the roadside,
08:37with all the tools.
08:38And that kit comes with everything.
08:40Keep that in mind,
08:41make your life a little bit easier.
08:46A short journey inland
08:48from Queensland's vibrant surf capital,
08:50you will find a serene
08:51and picturesque region to explore.
08:55The Gold Coast hinterland
08:56is full of natural wonders,
08:58cool towns,
08:59and hidden gems
09:00just waiting for you to discover.
09:07Lush rainforests will amaze,
09:09while the stunning waterfalls they harbour
09:11will enchant.
09:25In Mount Tambourine,
09:26quirky shops,
09:27cool cafes,
09:28restaurants,
09:29and boutique breweries
09:30cater for every taste.
09:35There we go, cheers.
09:37Even the family pooch
09:38receives the five-star treatment.
09:42There are plenty of places
09:43to rest your head at night
09:44from basic campsites
09:46to luxe digs.

12:21This time of year,
12:21it's beautiful.
12:22You know, we haven't quite
12:23hit winter yet,
12:24the darkness of winter,
12:25even though our winters
12:26in Queensland aren't too bad.
12:27Yeah.
12:27There's just that nice bit
12:28of chillness in the air

14:06We're hitting
14:06the Gold Coast canals
14:07after dark,
14:08after the break.
14:09Come on.
14:10Into the net.
14:11Oh, that's a ripping.
14:15Look at that thing.
14:16Wow.
14:17I haven't caught
14:18quality wadding like this
14:19for a long, long time.
14:29Well, as that sun
14:30just starts to set
14:31over the skyscrapers
14:32here on the Gold Coast,
14:33condition's pretty good
14:33as well.
14:34Light winds on the way.
14:35People are winding down
14:36after their big day
14:37at work.
14:38Not this man.
14:39I'm just getting started.
14:42The agenda?
14:43Fishing for wadding.
14:44There's no better guide
14:45on the Gold Coast
14:46than Youngie,
14:47or as I call him,
14:48the wadding king.
14:50The early evening run-in
14:51is all part of the plan.
14:53Well, Scotty,
14:54we're at the end
14:55of our summer season now,
14:56and from September
14:57through to April,
14:58the wadding bite vett up.
15:00There's more fish
15:01and there's bigger fish
15:02at night.
15:02Okay.
15:03I think a lot of it
15:03has to do with boat traffic
15:05on the Gold Coast
15:06here in the summertime.
15:07Plus, the water's quite warm
15:08and there's a lot
15:09of predators around.
15:10So, nighttime,
15:11a little bit quieter.
15:11Yes.
15:12Under the cover of darkness,
15:13you and I will be chasing a few.
15:19We're still going
15:20to fish the same process.
15:21We're still going
15:21to fish the corrugations.
15:22We're still going
15:23to fish the drop-offs
15:24and we're still going
15:25to fish the tidal flow
15:27over the sandbank
15:28that will give us the food.
15:29It's the tidal flow
15:30that produces the food
15:32from the sandbanks,
15:33exposes the food,
15:34then the wadding get in
15:35and dig their noses
15:36into the sand
15:37and have a feed
15:38and hopefully one
15:38of them's our bait.
15:40This is your Crib Island
15:42bloodworm
15:42that we buy
15:43from the bait shop.
15:43They're very expensive
15:45but they're the best
15:46whiting bait you'll buy.
15:47This one's our local
15:49bloodworm dug
15:49in our mangrove creeks,
15:51the muddy creeks.
15:53They're hard work to get.
15:54We can't buy them
15:55but they are,
15:56in my opinion,
15:57the best whiting bait
15:58that you'll get.
15:59These ones are our
16:00local wriggler worms
16:01out of the canals.
16:03They're very scarce
16:04nowadays.
16:06We're fishing
16:06a fast-flowing current
16:07so it's a five-ball sinker
16:09and a smaller hook
16:11meaning less bait required
16:12and easier
16:13for the whiting to eat.
16:16I can't wait any longer.
16:18Just get a little
16:19little one out there.
16:21Push.
16:23Just let that sink
16:24down to the bottom.
16:26I love whiting fishing.
16:28The fish are as keen
16:29as I am.
16:30We don't strike,
16:31do we?
16:31No, mate.
16:32No, we just let him eat it.
16:33So just let him
16:34start to play
16:35with that one
16:35but I'm used
16:36to picking it up
16:37and waiting
16:37and striking.
16:38If you pick the rod up,
16:40Scotty,
16:40you can...
16:41Oh, bite, bite.
16:42So we're waiting
16:43until that bends over.
16:44Oh, not necessarily
16:46but...
16:47Now, Scotty, now!
16:48Like that?
16:49Yeah, like that.
16:52Like that?
16:53Yes.
16:54He's mastered it already.
16:55We're fishing
16:56four pound
16:57and six pound.
16:59That's it.
16:59Nice and light.
17:01Now, we're in no rush
17:02because we've got
17:02plenty of current.
17:03They're big fish.
17:05So we lift him in, Youngie?
17:07If you want.
17:08You're the exit car.
17:09You've got the other line.
17:10I've got the other line
17:11but that's all right.
17:12So you know
