01:28straight out of her backsides is turning an entire community's stomach it is the most
01:34gross thing that i've ever seen no back at graham's puppy school grab a seat by the way
01:40a new student disrupts class oh dear he's like okay first day at school and could this be the
01:48most destructive dog ever he's got me crikey i mean he's next level that dog i don't remember walking
01:54into a house and seeing it quite like that thousands of pounds of stuff that he's destroyed but who's
02:00really to blame for the carnage is granddad tough or soft soft
02:10graham's at home fueling up for a full-on week ahead bacon you can't beat it can you i'm a
02:17man of
02:18simple taste really but i know when to stop but i'm gonna go see a dog who will eat and
02:23eat and eat
02:24so um i'm gonna make sure i've eaten this bacon but see before i get anywhere near him or it'll
02:29be gone
02:32over in bexley southeast london beauty therapist trish cockapoo hughie and his mom lucy
02:39are desperate for graham's help i'm really excited to meet graham today hopefully he can help me with
02:48this situation graham needn't have worried about that bacon sarnie what's he doing oh no

03:01is after a much dirtier breakfast straight out of her backside as well you wait stop stop dirty boy
03:12morning you must be trish yes i am nice to meet you yeah yeah oh that's not very nice no

03:20feed him i definitely feed him he just prefers dog sausage doesn't he yeah yeah huey seems to be taking
03:28the poo in cockapoo very literally huey huey's favorite snack in the whole wide world is definitely
03:36a big large crap huey stop it the smellier and the more fresh it is the better so fresh huey

03:46doesn't wait for it to hit the ground he will try to eat it directly as it's coming out of

03:53oh my god huey he'd probably eat as much as he can like it would literally be a poo buffet
04:02huey stop and he's not picky is he eating more poo are you other dog walkers i must be thinking
04:09it's really disgusting no huey it makes me feel completely sick oh no not the sort of thing you
04:19want to be seeing especially not first thing in the morning huey no matter how fast trish is
04:24stop it huey still pops up in the right place for a whiffy mr whippy huey has got a detector
04:32for when
04:33dogs are laying down their poo it's like he can hear it coming down the intestines must be like when
04:39you hear the ice cream fan comes and it's all like do do do do do do you wait he
04:47can hear that coming
04:49from the dog's ass basically stop it i don't know if it's a behavioral issue or if it's something more
04:57serious like a deficiency that he has so it would be good to get to the bottom of it no
05:03pun intended
05:05to stop huey's horrid habit naughty boy graham needs to know what's causing it
05:11why do you think he does it i have no idea i wish i knew okay i wish i knew

05:18it's not as rare as you think to see a dog eat poo yeah but it's really rare to see
05:23a dog do what
05:24your dog's doing i know you know straight from the source oh god he's doing it again you wait
05:34dirty dog do you worry about you know what could be in that poo definitely there have been times i've
05:41had to take huey to the vet's um not long ago actually and the vet said that he had colitis
05:48and that it was likely the cause was from eating so much poo that's inflammation of the colon
05:55this is one of those cases that's kind of funny on the surface and you have a bit of a
05:59oh no giggle about it but once you've got over that you realize that actually this is quite serious
06:06so lucy's mom who is the son of how come you ended up with the two of them lucy when
06:12she was
06:12given birth we found out that she actually had 10 puppies wow inside and unfortunately two of the
06:18puppies were stuck in the birth canal huey was the only survivor oh wow yeah out of the whole ten
06:25lucy was so unwell after the birth trish had to step in when he was a baby and he was
06:32born i had to
06:33hand rear him and he would just love to have skin connection it was almost like having a real baby
06:41sole survivor huey and trish became inseparable i love lucy but the bond is even stronger with huey
06:51which is why i really don't want to have to think about rehoming him how do you feel about
06:57this for the next 15 years i need to be able to find a solution to deal with this because
07:04it's just
07:04disgusting yeah i love him but this has got to stop but there's a serious worry all right graham's
07:12concerned huey's dirty addiction isn't behavioral but medical because this is so unusual i just wonder
07:20whether there might be something else going on here so i really want to take a bit of advice
07:24doing what he's doing is putting him in danger real danger if she lost this dog 10 out of 10

07:32can you imagine how that would be coming up graham's search for answers takes a turn so a lot of
07:40cockapoo's with this kind of problem 50 of my intake is a cockapoo or something poo which could derail
07:47any hopes for fixing it okay so we've got our first set of results back at graham's puppy school a
07:54juvenile delinquent super distracted yeah he's just not interested is vying for class clown you know when
08:01you said you wanted an energetic dog and a labrador with an appetite for destruction we used to have a
08:07nice rug down here dining room table is leaving a granddad isolated we used to have family social
08:14gatherings here in the garden it's not like that now which affects my dad massively
08:25what's he doing graham's in bexley southeast london oh no where pooey huey's horrid hunger
08:34for piping hot huey stop doggy doos the smellier and the more fresh it is the better is stressing
08:43out trish oh god he's doing it again huey stop and leaving fellow dog walkers horrified not the
08:50sort of thing you want to be seeing especially not first thing in the morning stop stop stop it's
08:56really important we knock this problem on the head because for trish it's extremely embarrassing and
09:00i'm also thinking sooner or later he's going to pick on the one dog that really really doesn't like
09:06it graham fears it's more than bad behavior huey stop and a medical issue could derail any training
09:14because this is so unusual i just want to take some advice from a vet that i know i've worked
09:19with before
09:21dr charlotte gray is a veterinary surgeon with a focus on clinical nutrition
09:27charlie this is trish and huey so what reasons are for a dog eating food there are a few some
09:35dogs
09:36learn it because as puppies their mum will eat the poo to keep the nest clean and actually there are
09:41some
09:41puppies who will start doing that and just never really stop huey was an only pup and all that extra
09:48fuss from his furry mum may have shaped his horrid habit but there could be a genetic quirk at play
09:55too
09:56he is a cockapoo based on my client base in the nutrition clinic that always makes me a little
10:01bit suspicious that maybe there's a reason that started it off so a lot of cockapoos with this
10:06kind of problem yeah a disproportionate number of cockapoos that have got odd food behaviors and
10:1150 of my intake is a cockapoo or something poo right who actually have an illness that's causing
10:17them some discomfort or some nausea which sounds back to front given that you'd think if they felt sick
10:23that eating poo would be the last thing on your mind it's never worked for me no it's never been
10:28my favorite honey with cockapoos prone to tummy troubles huey may be eating poo because he's
10:35uncomfortable so it'd be nice if we could have a look at him i think have a feel of his
10:38tummy come
10:39with it baby sorry huey you're not the smallest cockapoo hello well he's had his phone how are you oh

10:45that's lucky you don't lick me face good boy well done first a once over to check for soreness
10:53he's not tense at all he doesn't seem too worried with no obvious signs of pain a blood test could
10:59show if anything's off almost done okay well done so that's huey's blood the only test we've got left to
11:10do is the poo test collect some poo in one of these poo pots that will tell us whether there's
11:16inflammation
11:17high up his gut the poo test will take a few weeks but with a lab on site his bloods
11:23can be checked
11:23straight away okay so we've got our first set of results and so far it's good news he's not got
11:30any
11:30signs of anemia he's got no signs of infection so overall this is normal am i okay to carry on
11:37with
11:37some training yes well so far so reassuring i think yeah thank you very much no pleasure hopefully
11:43we get him sorted out yeah all right well crack on while there's still more results to come back
11:48the blood tests point to huey's poo passion as a learned behavior not a medical one well i'm glad we've
11:55got the go ahead to do the training which is great except i don't know how i'm going to do

12:00hughie no i mean think about it dog training is all about repetition and i'm gonna have to get
12:07hughie to step away from the poo repeatedly which means i'm gonna have to get a load of dogs to
12:12sort
12:12of poo on command otherwise we're going to be there all day graham's ready to get his hands dirty
12:18but cracking hughie's filthy fixation will take more than a whiff of inspiration
12:26in the meantime he's back in biester in oxfordshire where he's recently opened his new puppy school
12:33i started my journey as a professional dog trainer doing dog and particularly puppy classes and then
12:39i kind of moved away from that and i've been going around the country helping people with badly behaved
12:44dogs quite nice to work with puppies again he's brought together a class of new puppy owners
12:49to guide them through the key training milestones i wonder what we're gonna learn today from around
12:5712 weeks old puppies need clear focused lessons to shape good behavior you're gonna be wild trying
13:03by the end of this graham knows only too well without that early guidance these cuties can grow into his
13:13usual clientele no kevin ow the last lesson was all about socialization when things start to go a
13:23little bit iffy don't look nervous by around 12 weeks fully vaccinated pups can finally get out and
13:29explore helping them get used to the sights sounds and smells around them good boy johnny good boy let's
13:37get a motorbike so yeah well today's milestone is something that's as fundamental for dogs as well
13:45like the abc's one two threes for little humans so it's really important that they get this returning
13:51our rescue winnie family dog sydney breakup pop boo and farm dog mr tot and introducing new student loki
14:03are you all excited lorraine come on through nice to meet you you're all right so so loki he's a
14:12vizla isn't he he is yeah hungarian vizla grab a seat by the way thank you yeah oh dear looks

14:20winnie needs more socialization training oh dear he's like blimey okay first day at school
14:27yeah winnie well welcome to our little merry band how old is he he's 15 weeks 15 weeks he's a
14:35big
14:35lad for 15 weeks isn't he hey yeah recently retired child protection officer lorraine isn't putting her
14:42feet up just yet my plans with loki are to go on adventures he's a breed that that loves to
14:49run and
14:50explore and so i'm hoping that we can go off and do that when he's a bit bigger it's not
14:56going to be
14:56a quiet retirement at all it's going to be an exciting one you made a good choice there then
15:02they're definitely energetic i'll give you that yeah today we're moving on a bit there's a really
15:09essential set of skills that i want to teach you and these are all about building a bond teaching the
15:14dogs how to respond to your cues basically we're going to tell them to do something and teach them how
15:19to do it vocal cues or commands are a big early lesson the first are sit and stay which aren't
15:28just good manners they're about safety keeping pups out of trouble hello mr todd when it comes to
15:35teaching sit graham has a tip actions speak louder than words so he's not sitting first graham gets mr
15:44todd's attention with a treat then raises it up we move over his head and he naturally sits down
15:53good there you go now can anybody tell me what i'm not doing you didn't say the word sit
15:59bang on why would i not be saying sit we are doing sit training after all because he doesn't know
16:04what it
16:04means he doesn't know what it means you're absolutely right lorraine first we get him doing the action
16:09playing a game oh right i touched my bum on the ground you give me one of those treats then
16:15and
16:15only then do we start to say sit we do say actions speak louder than words and we're human we're
16:21pretty
16:21good at words puppies aren't so good that's why i always teach action first and then tell them the word
16:29so by prompting the action graham then adds the q word
16:35sit and by repeating sit he connects the word to the action good after just a few attempts sit he's
16:45got
16:45it good boy and that's a general principle you're going to see in all doctrine you show them what you
16:52mean and then you label it you give it a name that's your cue off you go can the class
16:59copy graham's
17:00success mr todd is first to understand what he said soon rescue pup winnie good girl set little boo
17:11and finally sydney all master the vocal cue but new boy loki move your hand up lorraine doesn't seem
17:19interested in studying super distracted yeah he's just not interested just wants to play so if you
17:27get your treat so hey hey what's this up and above but not to a jumping point there you go
17:34does that
17:35make sense so you're doing that with it you're luring them into position have your treat ready and
17:40i'll i'll give you a chance for loki lorraine's treats are no match to playing with another pop
17:46you know when you said you wanted an energetic dog right half the work in puppy training is getting
17:52and keeping their attention and loki is younger than the others lorraine is having a bit of a hard
17:57time but the worst thing she can do right now is give up and graham's come prepared right let's try
18:05something different a much tastier treat oh you like that don't you sit instantly gets loki's attention
18:12great with loki back on task it's time for the pup's first oral exam right let's see if we can
18:19get
18:19all the dogs to sit at the same time if i cure you so if we get them all standing
18:24up three two one
18:32sit good fantastic look at that it's a great start how are we feeling about it happy yeah good so
18:39the
18:39next lesson is going to be stay but here's the catch i want you to get your dogs to stay
18:45without
18:45ever saying the word stay coming up graham's giving the pups the silent treatment
18:56it's got me he meets a labrador ransacking a retiree's home we've always had birthdays and
19:03different events here since i've had ziggy we haven't been able to do that and will poohy
19:08huey are you ready kick his filthy fix now go on call him graham hall's new puppy school is up
19:22and
19:23running and today he's teaching his four-legged pupils sit cues or commands good boy so far they've
19:31learned sit three two one sit fantastic look at that graham's next lesson is stay there are lots
19:41of times when we might want a dog to stay or wait to just hang fire basically we might be
19:45crossing the
19:46road we might be about to go through again when it comes to stay graham's tip silence is golden
19:54and to demonstrate would you take a seat for a second please certainly thank you very much good
20:01but sometimes we need our dogs to sit or lie down for a period of time normally we think of
20:05that as
20:06maybe stay or even wait and i do that without saying either of those two words is he still sat
20:12there
20:12he is sure he is he is yeah why is that there i was told to did anybody say stay
20:21no point being
20:24why don't we teach dogs that sit means sit and keep sitting wouldn't that be simpler yeah you can join
20:31the group now con and thank you very much for helping out there making a dog sit and stay has
20:35two
20:36challenges time and distance how far you can move away from the dog before they give chase first graham's
20:44tackling time hello boo come with me there you go come on then hello you know how to do sit

20:54good there you go sit uh no
21:01good so she's beginning to learn when he says sit and i sit maybe there's a gap in time now

21:08extends the time he makes her sit before giving the treat maybe it's a second or two before i actually
21:15get it sit good clever girl i wasn't counting what was that five seconds and before long boo's patiently
21:25sitting for 20 seconds how many times did i say stay no times don't need it do you sit and
21:33keep
21:33sitting is what we're teaching them yeah distance is the next challenge and graham needs a new volunteer
21:40now to start with good boy i'll take a step back step back in good boy there's no point going
21:4810 feet
21:48backwards because he ain't got the hang of that yeah there you go good boy sit for the pops the
21:56game
21:56is easy sit don't move and the treat will come to you a couple of little steps yeah good boy
22:04that's
22:04all right we dropped it sit good clever boy and then we build it up from there and within just
22:13a few minutes
22:15oh good boy i nearly fell backwards good boy there you go go on then that'll do can the group
22:24get
22:24their pups to sit and stay without saying a word just to add a bit of spice to it that's
22:32the finish
22:32line if you can get as far as this finish line even for a second or two fantastic all right

22:39look three two one off you go to pass the test each pup must sit and stay until their human
22:46returns
22:47from the finish line set robert and winnie take an early lead you're nearly there keep going another

24:09loki yeah yeah i think loki's struggling because it's a new environment lots of new friends that he
24:18wants to interact with i don't seem to exist when when they're there if loki's ever to become lorraine's
24:25traveling buddy he needs to learn to listen sit
24:34oh lovely and after 10 long minutes well done lorraine that's better he's finally got it

24:46everybody i think you did really well there fantastic good all right they're all got their
24:53own abilities you know some dogs it was easier than others for loki it's his first day at puppy
24:57school you know i think he's done amazingly well it's his first time interacting with so many dogs and
25:03playing with them and then the learning yeah really enjoyed it loved it and yeah just so worth it
25:10next time more milestones but in the meantime do go away and practice obviously the hard work starts

26:06what hello hello hello see what we're up against oh blimey i see so he destroys sock furnishings does he
26:13he does anything he can get his teeth round he's a bit bare isn't it it is literally yeah it's

26:18it's it's it's his kennel since arriving 20-month-old ziggy has systematically destroyed
26:25everything in recently retired engineer richard's house he's got me i've not known anybody that's had
26:31a dog that's destroyed things like ziggy does right let go because if there is something within reach
26:38he will grab it and while you're taking that off him right he can be taking the handkerchief out your
26:45pocket oh ziggy we would be talking thousands of pounds of stuff that he's destroyed richard's not
26:53exaggerating this used to be his best city he slowly demolished that over like an 18-month period it's a
27:02little bit uncomfortable i find it very stressful because you can't rest and relax for one minute
27:09no wonder there's nowhere left to relax it's preventing me from having a peaceful time it's
27:18preventing people visiting particularly my grandchildren proud granddad of three richard's
27:25house used to be the hub of family celebrations we've always had birthdays christmases and different
27:33events here with all the family coming over and enjoying time here but unfortunately since i've had
27:40ziggy we haven't been able to do that and if grandson zach does visit playtime's under lock and key
27:47this is um toy cupboard and also where zach can sit and do some coloring or painting
27:54we can't get it out because the dog's just potentially going to come in and take something
28:00the rest of the family think i'm mad because they think i should be able to control him a bit
28:06better
28:07the table is on top of there i did notice there's a table on your sofa yeah it's upside down
28:13because it
28:13stops him actually making a hole in the setup and i've saved the cushions oh they're upstairs so anything
28:21that can be moved i've moved do you know if you played the game of who would live in a
28:25house like
28:26this you would i reckon you would say that's a student digs isn't it we used to have a nice
28:31rug down
28:32here great big rug we had a dining room table so yeah it's it's it's it's very bare isn't it

28:39definitely wouldn't think retired gentleman enjoying his time surrounded by all the things that you collect
28:44silver lifetime he's brought it back here he started to rip that up you know go on then you
28:50see if you can catch him zach all right zach's your man oh he's fast yes right oh i see

29:00ziggy ah no he's like i've got it i'm not let go now what's the solution well the solution that

29:09i've found is not to leave anything out right richard's fix to ziggy's destructive behavior
29:16he will eventually give up on it has been to simply ignore it there ah well done it's not
29:23just granddad's house that's wrecked his garden looks like no man's land oh blimey have you had
29:30many unexploded bombs around here ziggy's impact has been genuinely devastating zach and his granddad are
29:37really close and it is so nice that they have such a bond but they're unable to interact the
29:43same way as they did we used to have family social gatherings here in the garden and everyone would
29:48come here this was the hub it's not like that now no you know we don't have social gatherings here
29:54which affects my dad massively what's your take on the way he treats the dog my dad's very soft
30:01natured he's not one to raise his voice right so i think the dog kind of takes advantage of him
30:07a bit
30:08this is not a dog he was born to be the bossiest dog in the world far from it and
30:13yet he's getting
30:14away with murder lauren you were telling me you've got a couple of ideas yourself of where things might
30:19be going wrong do you want to tell you dad i think that you're you're a lovely person you're very
30:24soft
30:24though and i don't think there's much authority there when it comes to ziggy that's probably right
30:30so for example when lauren was young if lauren stepped out and did something naughty what happened
30:35did she get told off well she got told off who by probably her probably my mother not by you
30:47and thereby isaac hangs the rug right he's not getting sold off in any way so i think we need
30:55to tell him no yeah i'm quite prepared to consistent to do that yeah it's reached that point where
31:02you know it's make or break is granddad tough or soft soft out of the mouths of babes graham believes
31:11richard's lack of authority and inconsistent approach oh ziggy has allowed ziggy to run riot
31:19graham's probably hit the nail on the head with what he suggested with being a bit some bit firmer
31:25with ziggy as richard's been burying his head by locking his house down instead of his dog graham
31:32wants to put that right so the aim today really is we'll get to the end of the day and
31:37we'll put the
31:37room back together that'd be nice wouldn't it that would be a real treat starting with
31:41some of ziggy's favorite chewables pair of shoes cushion we'll stick that there
31:49oh and a blanket how about that so i'm going to teach ziggy how to leave it basically i'm going
31:57to
31:57walk him past a couple of items that he's not allowed to have and when he steps away we're going
32:02to say leave it we're going to guide him away from each of those items so if i take that

33:09the right kind of discipline how to set boundaries rules you know right then let's see what we got so
33:15you know the score ziggy's never listened to his dad leave it so don't quite let him out leave it

33:45didn't know he had it in him but can he be consistent with it well you're doing ever so well

36:30directly as it's coming out of their bums a filthy habit that's turning trish's stomach
36:36and everyone else's not the sort of thing you want to be seeing and especially not first thing
36:43in the morning with behavior this unusual graham wanted a medical check before tackling the training

36:55went right back to puppyhood as the lone survivor of a litter of 10. some dogs learn it because as

37:14now for training i've got a problem because theoretically i would need a whole line of
37:18dogs who just like poo on command one after the other after the other and i don't think that's
37:22going to happen so i'm gonna have to get a bit creative and true to form good boy graham's found
