00:00Hey!
00:01Oh, Pandora!
00:03Pandora!
00:04Pandora!
00:04What you need to do is get control of Pandora.
00:08If dogs go wild...
00:11They are absolutely nuts.
00:13Is the dog around?
00:16I can't control them.
00:18Come on now, big boy.
00:19Nathan thinks he can read.
00:20Surely he can.
00:21He can't.
00:22He's a dog.
00:22Of course he can.
00:23And get up.
00:24Oh, here we go.
00:25No, get down.
00:26To no good.
00:27That was me now, is it?
00:28I'm honoured.
00:30He's got down.
00:30Oh, no.
00:32And dirty.
00:33He loves a big, large crack.
00:37Oh.
00:37Tank likes to rub his boy part.
00:40What is going on with you, Tank?
00:42When pups...
00:43I wonder what we're going to learn today.
00:45...need to be schooled.
00:47Three, two, one, and sit.
00:49Fantastic.
00:50Look at that.
00:51Or if your pooch...
00:53He's dropped one.
00:54He got a whiff.
00:54...has a personal problem.
00:56Some dogs have bacterias that are gas-producing.
01:00Just in case.
01:02One man...
01:03Hey, look at that.
01:05...will give it his all.
01:07Jack!
01:07Oi!
01:08Leave it.
01:09...and get answers...
01:10I think I might know what's going on, and it's not what you think.
01:13...to any doggy dilemma.
01:15Yeah, that's next level, innit?
01:21This week...
01:22You've got to be nice, darling.
01:23...a loving home possessed by an unruly spirit.
01:26The charity, when we rescued him, said he was a very strange dog.
01:31Whose hellhound behaviour...
01:33He's a dog around.
01:34...is tearing a family apart.
01:37He's bit seven people.
01:39...a picky pooch with gourmet taste...
01:41He's got a bit of fillet steak this morning.
01:43...on a hunger strike.
01:44Any other dog would woof that in two seconds.
01:47...refusing to eat without a song and dance.
01:49He'll eat as long as Sienna's sort of performing for him.
01:52What's Sienna doing?
01:53...and Graeme's opening the doors...
01:56...to his brand new puppy school.
01:58Teaching the nation...
02:00Well done, everybody. Carry on going.
02:01...how to raise a beautifully behaved dog.
02:04Go with it.
02:05When things start to go a little bit iffy, don't look nervous.
02:08There we go.
02:14Graham's first case takes him west.
02:17To a quiet Bristol suburb...
02:20...where all is not as it seems.
02:26Because behind closed doors something stranger stirs.
02:34...waiting.
02:38...watching.
02:41Ready to terrorize four generations...
02:44...of a tight-knit family.
02:49...
02:50Seven months ago, 65-year-old retiree Marina welcomed Buddy...
02:55...a Chinese crested into her life.
02:58You've got to be nice, darling.
03:00You've got to be nice.
03:01And he came with an ominous warning.
03:04The charity, when we rescued him...
03:06...said he was a very strange dog.
03:09They didn't want me to have him at first.
03:11No, come on.
03:12They did say...
03:14...they've never known a dog like it, ever.
03:16They weren't wrong.
03:18No, no, no.
03:19From day one, this furry demogorgon...
03:22...has terrified the entire family.
03:26We've only had him six months.
03:27No, no.
03:29And he's a nightmare.
03:32Anyone who dares cross the threshold...
03:35There's a dog around.
03:37...awakens the beast.
03:39Be quiet, be quiet.
03:42Don't like anybody.
03:43Marina adopted Buddy as a friend...
03:46...for 13-year-old Rocco.
03:48And whilst they get on...
03:49...this terror has left his mark...
03:51...on the rest of the family.
03:54Buddy have bitten my mum.
03:56Since he bit me, I get very anxious, yeah.
04:00And I still got the bruise.
04:02He's bit my friend.
04:03He's bit my son.
04:05He's bit seven people.
04:08While hubby John lives in fear...
04:11...there's one person Buddy's spared.
04:13Look at that little face.
04:15You look so sweet.
04:17Don't you?
04:19Oh, it's lovely.
04:20I just melt.
04:21But family gatherings are now a write-off.
04:24Hello.
04:25And Marina's son, Dean, has had enough.
04:28No, no, no, no.
04:30It is destroying the family.
04:31It's destroying everyone.
04:32Like, it's coming.
04:33Whether or not.
04:34No.
04:35And it's all because of the dog.
04:37I would like the family to have a normal tea.
04:41Birthday party.
04:42Bingo night.
04:43It's more or less tearing the family apart, really.
04:47So can Graham free this family...
04:50...from their upside-down world?
04:53Morning.
04:54Hello, Graham.
04:54John, yeah?
04:55Nice to meet you.
04:56You all right?
04:56Shall I come in?
04:57Yeah, come on in.
04:58Very good.
04:59Good.
05:01Morning, hello.
05:02Hello, Graham.
05:02Hi, Marina.
05:03Nice to meet you.
05:04Hello, yeah.
05:05Blimey, and who's this then?
05:06This is Buddy.
05:08You're not very happy, are you?
05:09No, he's not.
05:10He's barking at you, isn't he?
05:11Yeah, he barks at everybody.
05:14Yeah.
05:14So you're the only person in the world who likes them?
05:16Yeah, I'm the only one he likes.
05:18I'm sure he would have bitten him if John had gotten in here.
05:21And he lives with John.
05:22So what's going on here?
05:23Graham wants to see how Buddy reacts to the rest of the clan.
05:28I have got him.
05:29I have got him.
05:29First to brave the beast, Grandma June.
05:32Hello.
05:33Hello, Graham.
05:34Do you want to grab a seat?
05:36Um...
05:36Grab a seat?
05:37Yeah.
05:41All of a sudden, you look nervous, do you?
05:43Yeah, I am a bit, because he's rowling and barking at me.
05:46And then he bites you, yeah.
05:47Yeah, and then he bites you.
05:48So there's no warning?
05:49No.
05:50Right.
05:50Next in, Dean.
05:52Hello, Graham.
05:52Do you want to grab a seat?
05:53Yeah, yeah.
05:56I thought you looked nervous.
05:57There's a reason.
05:58Come here.
05:59Do you want to come over?
06:01Arch nemesis, grandson Kieran.
06:05Whoa.
06:06Nice.
06:06Yeah, you're next.
06:08Who stopped visiting because of Buddy.
06:12Come on.
06:13No.
06:14Yeah, yeah.
06:15No.
06:16It's really striking that Buddy goes for everybody in the family, but never Marina.
06:23Marina is at the heart of Buddy's demonic behaviour.
06:27Take your basket.
06:28Sit.
06:28So Graham wants to see how he behaves when she steps out of the picture.
06:36Look at that.
06:38Buddy's off lead, of course.
06:40No, he had no notice at all.
06:42Nothing.
06:42Oh, he came and checked him out.
06:44Yep.
06:44Hello, Dad.
06:45Sniffed his legs, his bare legs as well.
06:48Couldn't be less bothered, could he?
06:49I can't believe it.
06:49I just can't.
06:50There's a different side to your dog.
06:53So is me.
06:54It's beginning to look that way.
06:55It is.
06:56If Marina is the chosen one, Buddy's past could hold the key as to why.
07:03What do you know of his life before you?
07:05We don't know much.
07:06We know he's been abused.
07:08So what was the first day like?
07:09The first day, we went upstairs, put him on my bed, and we both went to sleep.
07:13Aww.
07:14Hey, Brastow is my friend for life.
07:16I see.
07:17So poor old Buddy.
07:19I mean, he had a...
07:20Sounds like a horrible upbringing.
07:21He then bonds with Marina and goes, you're good, I like you.
07:27But everybody else is a threat.
07:31Coming up...
07:32Stop.
07:33Can Marina's bond become the key to calming Buddy?
07:36How do you feel?
07:37Don't trust him.
07:38Or will he notch up another victim?
07:41No.
07:42Graham meets a very discerning diner.
07:45So what happens next?
07:46He'll eat as long as ten are sort of performing for him.
07:48Wow.
07:49Who has his family bending over backwards?
07:52Absolutely ridiculous.
07:53And term begins at Graham's brand new puppy school.
07:57Can we have the next vehicle, please?
07:59Where there's first day jitters.
08:01How's Winnie doing?
08:02Alright?
08:02She was.
08:11Graham's in Bristol.
08:12You're not very happy, are you?
08:13Where this little rescue horror...
08:15Come on, now come on.
08:17...is terrorising all three generations of Marina's family.
08:22I don't like anybody but me.
08:25One minute, Buddy acts as Marina's gnashing demogorgon.
08:29But if she steps out...
08:31Look at that.
08:32He's a saint.
08:34Couldn't be less bothered, could you?
08:35I can't believe it.
08:35I just can't.
08:36There's a different side to your dog.
08:38So is me.
08:39It's beginning to look that way.
08:41Graham thinks Marina's the trigger that sparks Buddy's dark side.
08:46When you're in the house, and he does react, the old way of dealing with that is you pick
08:51him up and effectively give him a cuddle, right?
08:53Well, yeah.
08:53So he's like, ah.
08:55So if I go to attack people, mum picks me up, I get a cuddle, and all the nice stuff,
09:00right?
09:00Yeah.
09:00He's kind of gone, you're alright, right?
09:03Everybody else is a threat.
09:05If Marina's been fanning this little devil's flames...
09:09You've got to be nice, darling.
09:11You've got to be nice.
09:12Good boy.
09:13Oh!
09:13Graham suspects that calmly correcting, and keeping him grounded, will show that the
09:19rest of the family aren't a threat.
09:22No!
09:23No!
09:23I'm thinking if I can get Kieran, who for my money is the most nervous member of the family,
09:28if he can trust Buddy, as well as Buddy can trust him, maybe we're building some blocks
09:33for the future.
09:34But this only happens if neither feel threatened.
09:39We've got a muzzle on, Kieran, so that you can afford to relax a bit.
09:42On neutral territory, Graham wants to build trust with a simple game of walkies.
09:48So what we're going to do then, Marina, is I'm going to get you to say walk on or stop.
09:53Walk on, stop.
09:54Walk on, stop.
09:55Walk on, stop.
09:55Yep.
09:55Easiest routine in the world.
09:57Right.
09:57If he does start to misbehave, you can say no when he's not reacting.
10:02Good boy.
10:03He's like, ah, mummy says good boy when I just walk along and I'm nice to Kieran.
10:08You've never walked him before, have you?
10:10No.
10:11How do you feel?
10:12Don't trust him.
10:13No.
10:13But I've got no choice but to trust him in this situation.
10:16So will Buddy let Kieran into his circle of trust?
10:23Stop.
10:24Good boy.
10:26Good boy.
10:27Good boy.
10:27Good boy.
10:27Marina's blessing is key.
10:30Walk on.
10:31That's it.
10:31Without it.
10:32Stop.
10:33The pact will break.
10:34Well done.
10:35Good boy.
10:36But when Kieran tries the same trick.
10:41That's it.
10:42Good boy.
10:42That's it.
10:44Too much.
10:45No.
10:45It rubs Buddy up the wrong way.
10:49No.
10:49No.
10:50No.
10:52No.
10:52Can Marina right that wrong?
10:54Wait for it.
10:55And crucially resist giving him the reassurance that sparked all this in the first place.
11:01Now pop him back down again, see what you got.
11:02If he goes again, it's no again, isn't it?
11:04But he's desperate for Marina's affection and approval.
11:08I'm not picking you up.
11:10He's like a two-year-old, isn't he?
11:11Yeah.
11:12Pick me up, pick me up.
11:13I've got my hand.
11:15Just wait for it.
11:20Okay.
11:20Turns out giving him a stroke was a step too far.
11:23With a nervous dog, you can only go in tiny baby steps.
11:27Walk on.
11:28Come on.
11:28Walk on.
11:29So Kieran needs to rebuild Buddy's trust.
11:32That's nice.
11:33Stop.
11:34Oh lovely.
11:34Good boy.
11:35Good boy.
11:35One baby step at a time.
11:37Come on out.
11:38Walk on.
11:39That's it.
11:39There you go.
11:40Stop.
11:41That's it.
11:42Perfect.
11:43He's a good boy.
11:46He's getting it.
11:47He is.
11:48So how do you feel about you taking him for a walk and me and your nan staying here?
11:52I'm willing to give it a go.
11:54It's a major test.
11:56Will Buddy remain trusting without his mum's support?
12:00Best of luck mate.
12:01Right.
12:01All gone.
12:02Good boy.
12:04Come on.
12:05Stop.
12:05Stop.
12:06Oh look.
12:07He wants to go back to mum doesn't he?
12:10Look at that.
12:10He's looking at him like he does at you.
12:11Did you see?
12:12Yeah.
12:13Come again.
12:13Once Buddy only had evil eyes for Kieran.
12:18Look, look, look, look, look.
12:20Fantastic.
12:20Oh he looks up here.
12:21But now.
12:22He's starting to trust somebody who's not you.
12:24Oh yeah.
12:24Yeah.
12:25He's allowing him.
12:26Come on in.
12:27Good boy.
12:28Stop.
12:29Into his circle of trust.
12:31Good boy.
12:32Good boy.
12:34Good boy.
12:34Well done.
12:35Well done.
12:37Yay.
12:37Good.
12:38I'll tell you what though.
12:39This morning you couldn't have walked the dog, could you?
12:43No.
12:44So I think little bits of this you could do with all the family, couldn't you?
12:47Yeah.
12:47Absolutely, yeah.
12:49The training today I think went really well.
12:51For Buddy to let him hold the lead.
12:53That was a bonus.
12:55Yep.
12:55I think Graham done a good job today.
12:57This is a dog who's only ever trusted one person in the whole world, Marina.
13:02And today he's trusting another person.
13:06That's a big deal.
13:07But it's on home turf, where Buddy's reign of terror is the worst.
13:15Come on, you're getting angry now.
13:17Now come on.
13:17I've got to somehow defuse that situation.
13:21That will need to wait for another day, as Graham can't be late for his first day of
13:27school.
13:30Getting a new puppy.
13:32A magical time of fluffy, adorable fun.
13:35But without the right schooling.
13:38Oi!
13:38No!
13:40That bundle of joy.
13:42Oh, now he's off to the bird.
13:43No!
13:45Could turn into a terror.
13:48You know, over the years I've had thousands of people asking me how to get the very best
13:54start in life for their puppy.
13:56And that's how I started in dog training.
13:58So nearly 20 years ago, I was running puppy classes.
14:01And now, that'll do I.
14:02I'm about to open my very own puppy school.
14:06On the edge of the Cotswolds, Graham's bringing together a regular class of new owners.
14:11What a lovely venue.
14:13You're going to meet loads of new friends.
14:15To lay down the foundations every pup needs.
14:19What if he like jumps on everyone?
14:21He will.
14:21He'll be excited.
14:23Get the puppy basics all sorted early on and you're set for success.
14:27But if you miss a milestone, you're going to be chasing your tail for years to come.
14:32Graham's giving a series of milestone masterclasses to put these pups...
14:37Don't eat any stones.
14:39...on the right track to becoming dogs behaving very brilliantly.
14:43Come on, we're going to school.
14:44Welcome to Graham Hall's puppy school.
14:48Let's get ready for carnage, shall we?
14:53So who is this?
14:55This is Bea.
14:57She's four months old.
14:58They're similar age.
15:00Oh my goodness.
15:01Much bigger than Bea.
15:02Yes.
15:03Just a little bit.
15:05Good boy, good boy.
15:07All the pups are over 14 weeks old and vaccinated.
15:10This is Mr. Todd.
15:12Hello, Mr. Todd.
15:13So they're ready to join Graham's first class.
15:16And one of the most important milestones.
15:20Socialisation.
15:21Eating new dogs isn't interesting.
15:24Yeah.
15:24And getting acquainted is all part of the fun.
15:29What breeds Winnie?
15:30She's a bit sir.
15:31Bits of this and bits of that.
15:34Yeah.
15:37Morning, everybody.
15:38Hi, everybody.
15:39How are you?
15:40Maybe you could tell me a bit about your dog.
15:42This is Sydney.
15:43He's an Australian labradoodle crossed with a miniature cockapoo.
15:47Right.
15:47He's not very miniature.
15:48No, he's not very miniature, is he?
15:50No.
15:50This is Mr. Todd.
15:52He's a fox red lab.
15:53We come from Worcestershire.
15:54Worcestershire?
15:55Small farm, 80 acres.
15:57Oh, you're farmers.
15:57Right.
15:58Plenty of room for him to run around.
15:59Yeah.
16:00And get into trouble.
16:01Loads of room.
16:01Who have we got here?
16:02This is Boo.
16:03Boo is actually a breakup dog.
16:05I've always wanted a dog.
16:07And then my last breakup, I was like, I'm not waiting anymore.
16:10They're more reliable than human partners.
16:12Yeah, exactly.
16:13She's mine forever now.
16:14Winnie.
16:15And who is this?
16:16Winnie, you said?
16:17Yeah.
16:18And what's in the mix with Winnie?
16:20We don't really know.
16:21All we know is that she was abandoned in London.
16:25Who is this fluffy boy?
16:26This is Stormy, the chow champ.
16:29Stormy.
16:29Why do you get Stormy?
16:30It was for Romy.
16:32Romy's got ADHD.
16:33Hello, Romy.
16:34Well acquainted.
16:35Off we go, everybody.
16:36Time for the first lesson.
16:39Lots of the problems I see in later life are lack of socialisation.
16:42It's not just being social with other humans and dogs.
16:46Oh.
16:46It's about getting puppies used to all the things in life that they might come across.
16:51Between 3 and 17 weeks, a puppy's experiences shape how they'll see the world for life.
16:57It's a crucial window.
16:59And positive exposure now is the key to a well-balanced dog.
17:02Miss it.
17:03And the fallout can be serious.
17:05Poor socialisation can lead to fear or aggression towards everyday things.
17:10Keep up, Graham.
17:12Keep up, Graham.
17:12What was it?
17:14People.
17:15Ow.
17:16Sorry.
17:17Animals.
17:18Even cars.
17:21And those reactions only get harder to handle as they grow.
17:25Trick.
17:25Come here.
17:26Today, Graham's planned three lessons designed to tap into a puppy's instincts.
17:31If they're curious about something, that's puppy gold dust.
17:35Curious is fab, because it's the opposite of scared, isn't it?
17:38Lesson one.
17:39Reward your puppy's curiosity.
17:42You could praise them.
17:44You could add a treason if you like, OK?
17:46We always want to reward behaviour we want to see more of.
17:49Whenever I can, I hold my puppy glasses outside.
17:52And, you know, that's not just because of the obvious toilet training issue.
17:56It's because outside, the real world, there's noises, smells, loads of things going on.
18:02Squirrels, for example.
18:04Need I say more?
18:05Puppies need to learn to focus through the distractions.
18:09Graham's starting with a loud and smelly household item.
18:12A common culprit of puppy panic.
18:16I'm going to switch the vacuum cleaner on.
18:18Then we're going to bring them up one by one.
18:20They look nervous, we can pause.
18:21Just wait for it.
18:22Bring them a bit nearer.
18:24I just want them to get to the point where they're going, oh,
18:26do you know what?
18:27Not bothered about that.
18:28Charlotte and Boo, do you want to come forward?
18:30I'll switch that on.
18:32Charlotte, a brand designer, found herself needing a new focus after a relationship ended.
18:38Boo is like my family now.
18:40Say hi.
18:41Hello.
18:42So I will be taking Boo to work with me.
18:45She'll see you in the office when she's allowed in.
18:48We have a couple of offices and they're all dog friendly,
18:50but there is a certain etiquette you must abide by if you're going to be in the office.
18:55Hopefully she'll be a very good girl.
18:57And what I've heard is that there's a three-bark rule and you're out.
19:00So there's a lot of pressure.
19:03To be accepted as part of Charlotte's team...
19:06Come on, Boo.
19:08Boo can't overreact to things around the office.
19:11Boo-boo!
19:13What's that?
19:14Yeah.
19:14I'm not sure.
19:15Not sure.
19:16All right.
19:17What's this thing?
19:18To help Boo find some courage, Graham tempts her with a treat.
19:23Yay!
19:24And then when she takes the lead, another one seals a positive association.
19:29Clever girl.
19:31Lovely.
19:31And that's enough.
19:32That's all we need.
19:33Little encounter with a vacuum cleaner, no problem at all.
19:36With Boo taking it in her stride, the others follow her lead.
19:41Hello, Sydney.
19:42Treats can boost a pup's confidence.
19:45Stormy.
19:46But only at their pace.
19:48Hello.
19:48If they hesitate, pause.
19:51Give them space.
19:52What's this?
19:53And reward the smallest steps forward.
19:55There we go!
19:56Yeah.
19:57Yeah.
19:58With the pups now accustomed to something smelly and loud.
20:01Well done, everybody.
20:02That was easy, wasn't it?
20:03It's time to introduce something faster and potentially dangerous.
20:08Can we have the first thing, please?
20:11Graham's second lesson, keep your cool.
20:17If we're trying to convince a puppy that they've seen something that's new to them but it's okay,
20:22it's fine.
20:23I need people to be reacting in a way that will suggest we've got this.
20:28Puppies are emotional sponges.
20:30They pick up on every flicker of our mood.
20:33Studies show they can even mirror our heartbeats.
20:37So stay calm and confident and your puppy's more likely to do the same.
20:42Lovely.
20:43Graham wants the grown-ups to reassure their pups.
20:46Good boy.
20:47Well done.
20:48That's very good.
20:49That everything is safe and okay.
20:52Good girl.
20:53Good girl.
20:53Well done.
20:55Good girl.
20:55Can we have the next vehicle, please?
20:58And if any pup needs reassurance, it's this one.
21:04How's Winnie doing?
21:05All right?
21:06She was.
21:07She was.
21:08We're not too sure of this one.
21:12Five-month-old Winnie was rescued by Karen and Robert.
21:16She was emaciated, she was full of fleas.
21:19And they believe the way she was ditched has had a lasting impact.
21:24Come on, Liv.
21:25Let's go.
21:26She was abandoned from a car and just left on the side.
21:30She's just absolutely petrified of traffic.
21:36All right.
21:37It's all right.
21:38It's all right.
21:39It's all right.
21:39It's all right.
21:39It's all right.
21:39It makes us feel very sad that Winnie's so scared and frightened.
21:45Winnie, come on.
21:45Let's go.
21:46Cross.
21:48All right.
21:49All right.
21:50All right.
22:11Now, remember what I said.
22:12When things start to go a little bit iffy, don't look nervous.
22:15Come on, then.
22:16Come on, then.
22:17But Karen's letting her own feelings slip through.
22:20Karen, you look scared to death, darling.
22:23Try smiling.
22:24I'm concentrating.
22:28That was better.
22:30She's still not 100% because her ears are back.
22:33But you look more relaxed now, so she'll read that from you, you see.
22:37Good girl, Winnie.
22:39Winnie.
22:39Winnie's showing more confidence.
22:41But the scarier things to come.
22:43I'm here.
22:44Here we go.
22:44Oh, my gosh.
22:45It's a real car.
22:46This one might be a bit more of a challenge.
22:48Karen and Robert need to lead by example.
22:51We live a girl.
22:52Winnie.
22:52Come on, then.
22:53Winnie's looking a lot better.
22:55This time with smiles all round.
22:58Good girl.
22:59Winnie.
23:00Whee!
23:01Very good.
23:02Winnie ignores the scary car and just wants to play with little Boo.
23:07We got Boo again.
23:08Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
23:10Along with Winnie and Boo getting top marks.
23:12Good boy.
23:13Stormy, interested but not bothered.
23:14Well done.
23:15Good boy, Stormy.
23:16Well done.
23:16Treat.
23:17Very good.
23:17Well done.
23:18Good boy.
23:19Farm pup Mr. Todd will soon get used to loud machinery at this rate.
23:23Good boy, Toddy.
23:25Oh, yeah, a bit nervous, but that's all right.
23:27So far, the group have tackled new, smelly, loud and moving things.
23:32Very good.
23:33Well done, everybody.
23:35But coming up, things get more unpredictable.
23:39I think that'll do.
23:40And even the parents try to skip school.
23:42You want to run away, don't you?
23:43We're finished, Graham.
23:44Out of here.
23:45Has Graham met his match?
23:47Hey, Bob.
23:48What's this, man?
23:49With the pickiest eater ever.
23:51I might be in trouble here.
23:52And he heads back to Demogorgon Buddy.
23:55Oh.
23:56And then he blew it, didn't he?
23:57But can he reunite a family?
23:59Hello.
24:00You all right?
24:00Hiya, mate.
24:01Yeah.
24:03Scared stiff.
24:11Graham Hall's puppy school is up and running.
24:15Come on.
24:15We're going to school.
24:16Today's class, socialisation.
24:19So far, the pups have covered two of the three lessons.
24:23What's this thing?
24:25Lesson one, reward curiosity.
24:27Clever girl.
24:28Little encounter with a vacuum cleaner, no problem at all.
24:32Lesson two, keep your cool.
24:35Karen, you look scared to death, darling.
24:37Try smiling.
24:38That was better.
24:40Up to now, everything's been pretty tame.
24:45But Graham's lined up something bigger, louder and a whole lot scarier.
24:50Oh, wow.
24:51Look, babe.
24:53His final lesson, always end on a positive.
24:58It's not every day you bump into two shire horses and a brewery dray, is it really?
25:04But I just thought, if we can get them used to this, then we're on the winner, aren't we?
25:08Handling moments like this takes practice.
25:10And for sisters Ruby and Daphne, it's all completely new.
25:15After years of being pestered, Mum Catherine finally caved.
25:20I'm not a dog person.
25:21Being a good boy.
25:22And I was just like, no, we're just not going to have one.
25:25Ever.
25:26I don't like other people's dogs.
25:28I don't want them to lick me.
25:29I don't have to go over and touch it and pet it and stroke it and talk to it.
25:34So, yeah, so I'm not a dog person.
25:36I'm sorry to say.
25:38Well, there's now one exception.
25:40But I do love Sydney.
25:42Catherine's become a full-time puppy mum.
25:45I'm on duty.
25:46You know, I'm like, where is he?
25:47What's he doing?
25:48Has he done a poo?
25:49Has he done a wee?
25:50I'm like that a lot.
25:52Good boy.
25:53And Sydney's a true mummy's boy.
25:55She's got her head around it, thankfully, and means we can all have a family dog.
26:00So how will this family dog cope with this final challenge?
26:05They're smelling.
26:06Look, can you see noses going?
26:07Graham's getting the pups used to the unfamiliar smell and unpredictable movement of horses.
26:13Let's get a little bit nearer.
26:16Come on then.
26:17There we go.
26:18That's it.
26:19So what I'm going to do is I'm going to ask this gentleman to move forward a metre.
26:24Now you know what to do.
26:25If they spook a little bit, stay calm, we'll just act as normal.
26:28If you could move a metre forward for me, please.
26:32Oh, there we go.
26:36Sydney and Winnie are spooked.
26:39Winnie.
26:39Winnie.
26:40Yeah, don't let her run away.
26:42The important lesson here is don't let fear be the lasting memory.
26:48Why don't you grab a seat on the wall if you can?
26:51While Sydney's calmed down, his mum Catherine's on edge.
26:56I think that'll do.
26:57Why don't you grab a seat next to him? You want to run away, don't you?
26:59I'd just walk off and go home.
27:01If we run away now and go, right, OK, this is no good,
27:04he'll go away thinking horse is bad.
27:06Whereas if we can get him over it, at least from a distance, all right.
27:09And then his abiding memory was like, well, I had a bit of a scary moment with horses,
27:12but it was OK in the end.
27:14It's tempting to scoop them up.
27:16Good boy.
27:17But staying calm and letting them settle turns a scary moment into a positive one.
27:23Thank you, gentlemen.
27:24Thank you very much.
27:30That was a mixed bag, wasn't it?
27:32I think it's fair to say.
27:33You had a moment, didn't you?
27:35What was your instinct in that moment?
27:36We're finished, Graham.
27:37Yeah.
27:38See you later.
27:39Yeah, right, yeah.
27:40OK, and how do you feel now?
27:42Well, fine, cos he's relaxed now.
27:44In a funny way, don't get me wrong, I'm glad it happened, cos that's how you get over things.
27:48Yeah.
27:49It's not just been a steep learning curve for Sydney and Winnie.
27:53Today, all the pups have met new sights, sounds and smells galore.
27:57Keener at housework than I am.
27:58And if their owners keep practising...
28:01Good boy.
28:01Good boy, Sydney.
28:02...they'll be prepared for their next puppy school lesson.
28:06We've got horses nearby us, so I think, you know, a fresh day, we'll go again with treats, encourage him
28:11and just gently introduce him to a horse.
28:15Graham's given us some really good tips today that will help us go forward with her at home, help her
28:19out with in a few little struggles she's got.
28:23Socialisation starts really as soon as you get a puppy, but it never ends.
28:26There's always going to be something that the dog sees or experiences for the first time.
28:30So, go home, practise these things, get them used to lots of things.
28:34Remember, take your time, don't forget to praise the good things.
28:37If they're curious, what's curious?
28:39Puppie Goldust.
28:40Puppie Goldust, there you go.
28:42I'm looking forward to seeing you next time, and safe journey home.
28:47Graham's next stop is about an hour and a half northeast, where he's meeting a real four-legged foodie.
28:56Morning, Graham. Nice to meet you. I'm Nicky. Come on in.
28:59Who might just take the Michelin star for fussy eating.
29:02Oh, hello. Hello.
29:04Come on in.
29:04Hi, then.
29:05Right, just in time for breakfast, Graham.
29:08What have you got?
29:08So, we've got the freeze-dried.
29:10So, I'll pop some of this in the bowl, Graham, and you can see how he reacts to this one.
29:14But, here you go, Bobby. What's this?
29:16There you go, Bobby. Tuck in.
29:18Can I have some?
29:20Er, no.
29:22Not today.
29:23Nicky and her daughter, Sienna, have faced a food fight with six-year-old Cavapoo Bobby since he was a
29:29puppy.
29:30Even if I put it right up to Bobby to try and coax him, you can see he backs off.
29:36It's like he's a bit disgusted.
29:38When Bobby rejects the premium menu, Nicky and long-suffering husband, Louis, resort to a la carte dining.
29:46So, yeah, he's got a ten-pound bit of fillet steak this morning.
29:49A succulent filet mignon.
29:51Fit for a king, fit for a dog.
29:53Is it for Bobby?
29:55Is it for Bobby, Bobby's steak?
29:58Oh, no, that's it, he's done.
30:00Bobby's vet ruled out anything medical and said he's just being fussy.
30:05Want to try?
30:06Put the food on the floor and he will eat it.
30:08And we stuck to it for four days.
30:11By day four, we had to take him to the vet.
30:13He was dehydrated and he was put on a drip.
30:15And the vet was like, oh, this dog will try and starve himself.
30:19Never mind, Bob. Hey.
30:21Never mind.
30:23It actually makes me feel really stressed.
30:25It's like having a tiny child that won't eat.
30:27He's obviously not skin and bones.
30:29You're obviously getting some food into him.
30:31So I can get him to eat, but only if I take him to specific places around the town
30:36and hand feed him outside.
30:38Oh, really?
30:39Yeah.
30:40So never in the house?
30:41Never in the house.
30:42Outside specific places?
30:43Only two places, maybe three at a push.
30:46Wow.
30:46But anywhere else is a known.
30:48And if that sounds odd...
30:51He will only eat if I take my daughter with me, who's 13, and she kind of has to do
30:57a bit of a performance for him.
31:00All right.
31:01Okay.
31:03Curiouser and curiouser this is.
31:04Can we go and see that then?
31:05Yeah.
31:06Let's go.
31:06I'll grab Sienna and we'll head out, shall we?
31:08Okay.
31:09Come on, Bobster.
31:09Come on then.
31:12Come, Bob.
31:14So, this is the other side of town, isn't it?
31:16We have to come here pretty much every day if we want him to eat.
31:19So what happens next?
31:20Time for a show.
31:22So, yeah, he'll eat as long as Sienna's sort of performing for him.
31:25Oh, is he?
31:26And if Sienna's not here, he won't eat?
31:28No.
31:29It's got to be a family joint effort.
31:31Wow.
31:32I mean, I'm 13 now and I don't really want to be hanging around in a children's play park
31:38and I'd way rather be out with my friends or I'd rather sit at home than be out here.
31:44I've never seen a case like this before.
31:47This family have been doing this for about five years, twice a day.
31:51That's a big chunk of a childhood, isn't it?
31:55Feeding Bobby has become a performance and Graham wants to know why.
32:01When we first got him, we took him to puppy training.
32:03And the puppy trainer told us because we had a small child at the time,
32:07it would be best if we fed him out of our hands on a walk
32:09so he didn't become funny around his food.
32:12Right.
32:13So that's what we did.
32:14That was the start of it, was it?
32:15Yeah.
32:16So what do you make of this, Lewis?
32:17It's absolutely ridiculous.
32:20I don't know what to make of it, though, to be honest.
32:23Sienna is clearly tired of putting on the performance.
32:26Nicky is clearly tired of it.
32:28I think Lewis is overtired of it.
32:31The only person who's not tired, of course, is Bobby.
32:34Graham suspects Bobby's not fussy at all.
32:37He's simply learned a strange mealtime habit.
32:41It's a bit like a comfort blanket thing, breaking it down.
32:46There's kind of three kinds of comfort blanket.
32:48There's the location, there's the fact that he's been hand-fed,
32:51Yeah.
32:52And there's the fact that, Sienna, you're doing your thing.
32:55Yeah.
32:56So I think we need to fade those out.
32:59First up, Graham wants to ditch Bobby's alfresco dining.
33:03And while Sienna performs indoors, a new dinner cue.
33:07I'm going to introduce that word, when he's eating.
33:10And then he associates dinner with food.
33:15What's dinner doing?
33:16What's she doing?
33:17What are you doing?
33:17Inside, with ball-bouncing entertainment...
33:20Has she got the ball?
33:21...will Bobby buy the change of scene?
33:23Try a little bit in there.
33:25There we go.
33:26Oh, look.
33:27There you go.
33:27How cool is this?
33:29No.
33:30It's not looking good.
33:32I might be in trouble here.
33:33I just think if he's stunted, we can build on it.
33:36Struggling at the minute.
33:38Luckily, Graham is packing paste.
33:42I've got this tasty turkey treat here.
33:45In other words, turkey paste.
33:47Could a poultry pate...
33:49So if I put a little bit on a bit of kibble...
33:51...tempt this stubborn diner.
33:55Oh, what's that?
33:59Dinner.
34:00Dinner.
34:01Good boy.
34:03Hey.
34:04Oh.
34:04What?
34:05Winner, winner.
34:06Turkey dinner.
34:07Good boy.
34:09Try him with one without the paste on it.
34:12So, good boy.
34:14Dinner.
34:14Yes.
34:15With Bobby...
34:17Good boy.
34:18...now eating plain kibble...
34:20Who's a clever lad, eh?
34:22Graham wants Sienna to swap the spotlight...
34:25...for a seat in the audience.
34:28Do you reckon he's going to do it?
34:30I don't know.
34:32So indoors and without a show...
34:35Bobby?
34:35What's this?
34:36What's this?
34:37Will Bobby chow down?
34:43Dinner.
34:44Good boy.
34:46Dinner.
34:46Hold on.
34:48Good boy.
34:50Dinner.
34:51Good boy.
34:55Oh, my God.
34:57He's eating plain kibble.
34:59Wow.
35:01Now happy with no-frills dining...
35:05Wow, that's really good.
35:06Good boy.
35:07It's like a new dog.
35:09It's time for the final act.
35:12Good boy.
35:14The last thing would be to take away the hand-feeding.
35:16I'm going to try.
35:18Bobby never eats from a bowl, but Graham thinks he can make it appetizing.
35:23Hello, mate.
35:24What's this?
35:25What is it?
35:25Why don't I start by putting a tiny little bit of this in it?
35:30What do you reckon to that?
35:33There you go.
35:35Good boy.
35:36Good boy, Bobby.
35:36And what if you add a bit of kibble to it now?
35:39There we go.
35:41There we go.
35:42Oh, good boy.
35:45Good boy.
35:46Good boy, dinner.
35:48Dinner.
35:49There's no paste in it.
35:52Oh, no.
35:55But Chef Graham's not hanging up his apron yet.
35:59Tiny little bit.
36:01Good boy!
36:05After gobbling up the morsel of turkey pate on one bit of kibble...
36:10One bit.
36:11Another bit.
36:11Another bit.
36:12Good lad.
36:13He finishes the rest condiment-free.
36:18What's he doing here?
36:20Why didn't we get Graham ages ago?
36:24For over five years, Bobby's been a difficult diner.
36:28Dinner!
36:29But tonight, he's eating indoors, from a bowl, and without a full-on performance.
36:34Good boy!
36:37What Graham's done is absolutely amazing.
36:39And it's going to change so much.
36:42I'll get to see my friends more, so it will be a lot better.
36:46To see it, and believe it...
36:49Was insane.
36:50The fact that I could probably...
36:51Bobby, what's this?
36:52What's this?
36:53Sit.
36:53Sit.
36:54Let's try that again.
36:56Sit.
36:57And he'll eat out a bowl.
36:59In the house.
37:02It's incredible.
37:03It's crazy.
37:04It's nuts, isn't it?
37:05Yeah.
37:06Good boy!
37:08Coming up, we're back with Chinese Crested Rescue Buddy.
37:13The family terror who's threatening to sink his teeth into everyone but Mum.
37:20Can Graham rebuild his trust?
37:22It's coming down now, can you?
37:23And get everyone back together.
37:26Super boy!
37:28Right.
37:28You did the right thing there, in the wrong way.
37:38Graham's nearing the end of his working week.
37:41But there's still one demon to exorcise.
37:44He's back in Bristol to face rescue dog Buddy.
37:47He's quiet.
37:48He's quiet.
37:49He's quiet.
37:49A Chinese Crested with a dark past.
37:52And a taste for chaos.
37:54No.
37:55No.
37:55Come on.
37:56No.
37:56No.
37:58Angelic with Mum Marina.
37:59He could point as a good boy.
38:01But possessed with everyone else.
38:04Now come on.
38:04This hellhound has torn the family apart.
38:08No.
38:08No.
38:09That's enough.
38:10That's enough.
38:11Walk on.
38:11Last time, grandson Kieran earned Buddy's trust on neutral ground.
38:16Stop.
38:16Look at that.
38:17He's looking at him like he does at you.
38:18Did he say?
38:19Yeah.
38:19Come again.
38:20But the curse won't lift until Buddy trusts the whole family.
38:24And Bingo Night is back on.
38:26No.
38:27No.
38:28No.
38:29Before Buddy came with us, we always on a Saturday had a game of Bingo.
38:34I just miss all that.
38:35I miss it terribly.
38:37Now make no mistake.
38:38This is not going to be easy.
38:40It took quite a while to get him to trust Kieran outside.
38:44And you can't force these things.
38:46So who have we got available in the family today?
38:49John and Dean will be here in a minute.
38:51John and Dean.
38:52That's great.
38:52And if we can fix it with them in the room, I'm sure you can transfer that to anybody else.
38:57Yeah.
38:57For months, Marina's been soothing Buddy when he kicks off.
39:02You've got to be nice.
39:04Oh.
39:05Sending the wrong message.
39:07That's a good boy.
39:09Graham wants to break that habit.
39:11From now on, comfort only comes when Buddy's calm.
39:15Well, start with him on your lap, because that's where he wants to be.
39:18He loves it.
39:18But as soon as he puts a foot wrong, you pop him down on the floor.
39:22Right.
39:22Right, mate.
39:23But will Marina...
39:24Hiya, come on in, mate.
39:25...resist the temptation...
39:28OK.
39:29...to cuddle her little beast.
39:31No.
39:31No.
39:32No.
39:33No.
39:34No.
39:35Now he wants to come back up, look.
39:37There you go.
39:37I bet you're dying to let him up, aren't you?
39:38Yeah, I know.
39:39Because that's the other thing.
39:40By picking him up, you're effectively going, yeah, he is scary, isn't he?
39:43Yeah, yeah.
39:44Calm earns affection.
39:48Good boy.
39:48Good boy.
39:49But the second he snaps...
39:51No.
39:52And then he blew it, didn't he?
39:53Yeah.
39:53...the love stops.
39:55Stop.
39:56Stop.
39:57Stop.
39:57Yeah.
39:58But when he settles...
40:00Good boy.
40:01...he's rewarded.
40:03OK, pick him up, let's see what happens.
40:05Yay.
40:06Good boy.
40:07Good boy.
40:08This is good, because normally, John, you'd have gone...
40:10Yeah, that's a result.
40:11He's looking in John's general direction.
40:14Yeah.
40:14Now he's calmer.
40:15John's been allowed in.
40:17Dean!
40:18But a new challenger is about to enter.
40:22I thought so.
40:25No.
40:26All right.
40:27Your mum knows what to do now.
40:29No.
40:30No.
40:31OK, no.
40:34Yeah?
40:35No, no.
40:38He's coming down now, can you?
40:39You're right.
40:39Trust me, you will.
40:42I'll tell you what.
40:43Oh.
40:44There you go.
40:45Yay.
40:45Good boy.
40:46Right.
40:47There was a little mistake there.
40:49There's a big difference between going, good boy.
40:52And going, yeah, good boy.
40:54Because that will rev him up.
40:56You did the right thing there.
40:57In the wrong way.
40:59He needs to be calm before Marina shows him any affection.
41:04Good boy.
41:06Good boy.
41:06Go on then.
41:10He's a good boy.
41:12A good boy.
41:14Buddy has always kicked off when family dared to enter his inner sanctum.
41:20But slowly he's learning that quiet gets him what he wants.
41:24It's nice to have a bit of peace.
41:26So that probably took, I don't know, what do you think, three or four minutes since you came in?
41:30Yeah.
41:31By Marina simply refusing to feed the beast with affection, Buddy's inner demon is tamed.
41:39Time to see if peace lasts.
41:41And Graham's come prepared.
41:44Hey, look at that.
41:46How are you?
41:47What?
41:47Hey.
41:48I can't like this.
41:49Yeah, it's smart.
41:50I know.
41:51I'm going to go down the supermarket wearing this later.
41:54Are you ready to play?
41:55Eyes down.
41:56And your first number is...
41:58Oh, I know this one.
41:59I don't know if I'm allowed to say this anymore.
42:00Two fat ladies.
42:0288.
42:04I tell you, I've forgotten Buddy was here.
42:06He's so quiet.
42:06He's been like a little angel, hasn't he?
42:08Yeah, hasn't he?
42:09All the fives.
42:1055.
42:11Yeah.
42:12Yeah.
42:13Bingo.
42:14Bingo.
42:16I didn't think I'd achieve that.
42:18I've got to be honest.
42:18My expectations weren't that high.
42:21Yeah, I was really amazed.
42:22None of us could believe it.
42:24We've definitely turned a corner.
42:26For Buddy, he's learning to trust again.
42:29Learning that not all humans are bad people.
42:32So that means that, I hope,
42:35he can enjoy a long and happy family life.
42:43Breakfast time for Bobby.
42:45In Oxford, Bobby's finally eating without the drama.
42:49There you are.
42:50In Bristol, Buddy's slipped back into bad habits, so Marina's had a refresher with Graham.
42:57And back home from puppy school, the class have been busy with their homework.
43:02Boo's braving the hoover.
43:04Winnie's tackling traffic.
43:06Mr. Todd's chilling with the goats.
43:10And Sydney's met a horse, face to face.
43:13Do it again.
43:16If you think your badly behaved dog could do with Graham's help, then why not get in touch?
43:21Details can be found at www.channel5.com forward slash take part.
43:29Ziggy, no.
43:30Go.
43:33Okay.
43:34Go.
