Payton Tolle was once again dominant. Scheim: "I think it would have been nice for the Boston Red Sox to bring up Payton Tolle a little bit earlier"
How important is this year's #MLB Trade Deadline for CBO Craig Breslow? It's 5/5, but already time to sell?
Transcript
00:00Like, you look at, do we need a re-eval when it comes to the minor league system here for
00:08the Boston Red Sox?
00:09When you look at the prospects that they have had and all the hullabaloo over them,
00:14and then you look at the injuries or the success rate of Christian Campbell.
00:22And I get it, it's early, but Christian Campbell, Marcelo Meyer,
00:26who spent a good deal, a reasonable amount of time injured last season,
00:31and Roman Anthony, like, do they need to re-evaluate the way they are getting the young fellas ready for
00:40the bigs?
00:40I think you might have to check out your strength and conditioning program
00:43because if these guys are always coming up with some type of, you know, ailments, some type of injuries,
00:49you've got to start to question.
00:50And we, like you said, we put so much on Roman Anthony's plate, and rightfully so,
00:56from what they were telling us, his performance at the World Baseball Classic.
00:59But it seems like he's always dealing with something.
01:04You know, I don't know who you would kind of compare him to as a player.
01:08You said he had knee tightness?
01:11No, I think he had wrist tightness, but he's always, like, dealing with something that, you know,
01:15is keeping him out of, you know, stretches of the season.
01:22It's just, like, what a collection of just loathsome characters.
01:26Like, you're just hanging out in Detroit, like, ooh, my hand.
01:31I can't play.
01:32Oh, Curtis, now come on.
01:34It looked like he did something to it.
01:37Mm-hmm.
01:39I didn't think he's bailing on the season.
01:41I don't know.
01:42Like, how many times has this happened?
01:44It's not even, like—
01:45Curtis, do athletes get injured in your world?
01:48Of course.
01:49Curtis is like Cal Ripken behind the glass over there.
01:52He's like, yeah, these guys should play, you know, nonstop every day.
01:55Wiggy agreed with me, and now all of a sudden he's like—
01:57No, I mean, no, I wasn't agreeing with you.
01:59Yeah, you said this is happening a lot with him.
02:01Yeah, because you brought up the knee tightness, and now Wiggy is thinking, uh-oh.
02:05No, no, no, like, I don't—like, he had the back issue or whatever it was.
02:09Yes, he had the back issue last season.
02:12Don't you think, Greg, there are certain people that need everything to be right to play?
02:16Yeah.
02:16And if you are that person, it's really hard to be great, and you're not always reliable.
02:21Is there also bad luck, though?
02:23Of course.
02:23Like, some dudes are snakebitten.
02:25Like, I think the guy, the Celtics guy that was the big signing with Kyrie Irving had bad luck.
02:30Oh, the video gamer.
02:33Yeah.
02:33I mean, like, when he blew—I mean, that was an awful injury.
02:35He played one terrible injury that he could never get over.
02:38But I played with a guy like that.
02:39I played with a guy who needed to feel and be 100% in his mind.
02:46And yeah, I agree.
02:48There are guys—
02:48Who was it?
02:48It was a tight end.
02:50His name was Chad Heinrich.
02:52And he—like, little nagging injuries, he couldn't mentally, like, deal with and get through.
03:00But I've played with guys—and then you're right, Mago.
03:02There are guys that just, you know, that are snakebitten that have bad luck.
03:05But there are some guys that need to feel great.
03:09And if they're dealing with something, it's difficult for them to play.
03:13Well, and I understand Curtis's argument when it comes to some players.
03:16But Curtis, you met Roman Anthony.
03:19We had him on the show for a considerable amount of time.
03:21It seems like a great guy.
03:23I was going to say, he doesn't seem like that kind of guy.
03:26Well, J.D. Drew is a really nice guy.
03:28Yeah, but I'm not saying nice.
03:29Like, seems like a guy who wants to play and wants to wear—
03:33Why would he check out?
03:35Like, he wants to wear—
03:36Who wouldn't want to play for this team right now?
03:37I would check out.
03:38Yeah, no, I think—
03:39Peyton Tolley doesn't check out.
03:41Peyton Tolley, he is a man that I can get behind.
03:44He's competitive.
03:44I mean, I think the guy's competitive.
03:46He doesn't strike me as one of those guys, you know, that you look at and go,
03:51Oh, could he really have played?
03:52Or why is he doing this?
03:54I think that's just to me, go to your point.
03:56Some guys—and, you know, we'll have a guy on today that was a warrior.
04:01But injuries kind of probably slowed his career down.
04:06Hey, Greg, good morning.
04:07It would have been nice, I think, for the Boston Red Sox to bring up Peyton Tolley a little bit
04:11earlier.
04:12It gives you a nice little energy boost.
04:14Just, I don't know, like two out of three of his starts have been pretty good, enjoyable.
04:18Also, I just think overall this Red Sox team, which has been not enjoyable so far this season at a
04:24solid 14-21.
04:26This team, and Craig Breslow especially, is going to really need to focus on the trade deadline.
04:31I know we're still a couple months out from the actual deadline itself.
04:35But to be honest, like, you need to make sure you are looking into selling as many different pieces of
04:40this team as you can.
04:41Because clearly, whatever's going on doesn't work.
04:44We talked yesterday briefly about the clear disconnect between Sedan Raffaella and Trevor Story.
04:49Jaron Durant all of a sudden is hitting, so maybe his value will start to go up and you can
04:52actually ship him out of here,
04:54which would be nice because I don't think his attitude in the locker room is necessarily a welcome one at
04:58this point.
04:59So I just think that you need to do a full-on autopsy of this entire team and sell off
05:05as many pieces as you can at this point.
05:06May 5th, just to be clear, you're at the sell point.
05:11Yeah.
05:12Craig, you're 14-21.
05:14Like, there's enough of a sample size here.
05:16It's not, oh, it's too early.
05:19You've won 14 of 35 games.
05:22That's not good enough.
05:22You haven't even won 50% of your games.
05:25Like, what are we doing?
05:26It makes no sense to me.
05:28This team is not good.
05:29The pitching staff has been horrendous.
05:31Brian Baio needs to, like, go to another planet.
05:34I don't know what he's doing.
05:36But the problem is you can't, I mean, no, you're not going to have anybody that wants him.
05:40No, but that's fine.
05:41Just send him to AAA.
05:42Put him in waivers.
05:43I don't care.
05:44I know.
05:44I get your point.
05:45I think the biggest question to maybe Shimes, you know, selling off pieces is the pieces that you know that
05:51you have that are going to be around.
05:53When do you get to, all right, we potentially shut them down, whether it's a Garrett crochet with some shoulder.
06:01Like they get preempted with Roman Anthony and they throw him on IL even though they don't need to
06:05because they know this team stinks.
06:06Right.
06:06Maybe, you know, Rangers Suarez.
06:09Don't question his toughness.
06:10Well, wait, wait, wait.
06:11I didn't.
06:12Are you saying that they're being preemptive with Roman Anthony?
06:15No, no, no, no.
06:15I'm saying that even if he could play in like a day or two, you throw him on IL anyways
06:21and give him extra rest because his team sucks and they're not going anywhere.
06:25Yeah, don't rush him back.
06:26Yes, exactly.
06:26Thank you, Wiggy.
06:27I was reading about Roman Anthony's injury issues.
06:30It began back oblique and it's due to a deceleration and a swing.
06:34So I don't know if that's going to go away.
06:37Yeah.
06:37If you just get, if you get hurt and how you swing the bat, you might want to change how
06:43you swing the bat.
06:44That explains, I've been trying to figure out why his velo was off 1.2 miles per hour and that
06:50explains it.
06:50A lot of deceleration.
06:51I was wondering about that.
06:52It must be a relief.
06:53I was looking at every potential possibility.
06:56I couldn't figure it out.
06:57But I thought he fixed this.
06:58I was on, I was on wind for a while.
07:00There was a weird, strange, I don't want to get in your, in your lane.
07:03No, please.
07:03Strange wind pattern at Fenway for a while.
07:05It sure was global warming.
07:08And my favorite thing of deceleration is Taylor Condon's term paper in high school on the Declaration of Independence was
07:15titled Deceleration of Independence.
07:17Nailed it.
07:18And I just will never let him live that down.
07:20So good job.
07:21This is Rob from Swampscot.
07:24Hello, Rob.
07:26Hi, Greg.
07:27How are you?
07:28Excellent.
07:28How are you?
07:30Good.
07:30So let's recap, okay?
07:32Real quick.
07:33The five Red Sox pitchers three weeks before the season was going to start.
07:39Two of them are on the IL.
07:42Brian Bale is ready to basically turn into a living, breathing dumpster fire.
07:47And what we're hanging our hat on now is Ranger Suarez and Peyton Toley.
07:52So I would dare say whoever assembled this roster created an epic fail.
08:00Absolutely horrendous.
08:02Don't discount that the 12 outfielders you have are the best outfield in Major League Baseball.
08:08That is true.
08:09Don't discount that.
08:10Maybe one of them can pitch.
08:11Maybe one of those guys can pitch.
08:13Yeah.
08:14The roster construction doesn't look so good so far.
08:17Good morning.
08:18Good morning.
08:21Guys, Craig Breslow, the Chief Baseball Officer of the Boston Red Sox.
08:25Guys, Craig Breslow, the Chief Baseball Officer of the Boston Red Sox.
08:30Hi.
08:31Good morning.
08:32Good morning, Craig.
08:33Good morning.
08:37Yeah, I don't know.
08:38I mean, listen, Bresbot said that they were going to rely on pitching and run prevention.
08:45Yeah.
08:45Neither one works.
08:46So the pitching part is falling apart.
08:48I don't, I, you'll, I, you will never be able to explain to me how you thought you were
08:55going to utilize the overabundance of outfield guys and you were saying no to deals.
09:02Like I brought up a while ago, I was whispered to about the ran.
09:07And I was, I was, I was whispered to about another trade that was vetoed.
09:12Uh, will your Abreu, uh, Tampa.
09:16Wow.
09:17They, they, they had a deal in place for Abreu and that, and, and that, that was, that was
09:23next.
09:24That's probably smart though.
09:26Right.
09:26The Duran one I'll give you, would you.
09:28But my question on that one, Wiggs, and I'm sorry, is if Alex Cora is just the manager,
09:34why was that allowed to happen?
09:36Because he wasn't just the manager.
09:38But you can't have it both ways if you're Alex Cora.
09:41Right.
09:41But if you believed he was just the manager, then that was on you to think that he had
09:46no power, which, you know, you might've been a little naive to believe that there, the
09:51will your Abreu one.
09:53I mean, I feel like he was one of the guys you in the outfield, you were going to be
09:57like,
09:57okay, he's somebody we can build around him and Roman Anthony.
10:01So the Duran one is the one that I'm like, well, that was the stupid move you didn't make.
10:07I'll give you the will your brain.
10:09I think that's a smart one to Knicks because you, you, you, you put him in, but he's your
10:14best hitter.
10:14But again, if you're, you can't, there's no way to fit them all in.
10:20So at some point you should have traded somebody.
10:24I don't care if it's Yoshida, Duran, whoever it is.
10:30It's not going to be Roman Anthony.
10:31But wasn't Cora loyal to the wrong people then?
10:35Maybe.
10:36Because he was loyal to people that were loyal to him.
10:38Yeah.
10:38And you should, the guy you should have traded was Duran.
10:40You've been trying to trade Yoshida, but nobody wants him.
10:43And not making Trevor Story the next Alex Bregman.
10:47I mean, the guy sucks and he's kind of a dink.
10:50That's where you missed the boat.
10:51And that was self-inflicted because you chose to go into, you know, the offseason knowing
10:58that, all right, we have Duran and we're going to have to play him in the outfield.
11:01This is Mark from Medford.
11:03What's up, Mark?
11:04Hey, how's it going, guys?
11:06Thanks for taking the call.
11:07Of course.
11:07Is it turning out that Roman Anthony is a freaking chandelier?
11:13I mean, this kid is getting hurt every freaking week.
11:16Oh, no.
11:17Don't say that.
11:19He decelerates through the zone.
11:22He has been, as Meggo said, unlucky of late.
11:27Mm-hmm.
11:28That's it.
11:29There are guys out there.
11:30There are guys out there.
11:31Well, okay.
11:32So just to be clear, Curtis, like you're saying that he's like overly sensitive to his boo-boos.
11:39Right.
11:39I think he's part of that next generation where everything needs to be perfect for them to
11:43play.
11:44Oh, well, not everybody's like that, though.
11:45No, I know.
11:46I'm saying that he's part of that next generation.
11:48It's a generational thing of like, oh, the younger players won't tough out anything.
11:51I mean, some of them will.
11:52Oh, yeah.
11:52We went over it yesterday talking about the McHale story.
11:55I mean, there are certain changes that have been made because of the salaries and everything
11:59else.
11:59Everybody now is their own business.
12:02Right.
12:02Like, they are an entity unto themselves.
12:04Right.
12:05Drake May played with his numb shoulder, right, in the Super Bowl.
12:08Tell him, Meggo.
12:08Because it was...
12:09I wish he hadn't.
12:10Right.
12:10Okay, so you can't have it both ways.
12:12Of course you can.
12:13No, you can't, Curtis.
12:14You can celebrate people that played through something and say that that was also foolish.
12:20But you're not celebrating.
12:20You're saying, I wish he hadn't.
12:21Well, he played horribly.
12:22And then when somebody doesn't play, you say, well, they're soft.
12:25And this is a generational thing.
12:28People don't do this anymore.
12:29Well, you're conflating 60 different things into one topic.
12:32I'm saying...
12:32You brought up McHale.
12:33So I brought up an athlete who is younger, who just played in the Super Bowl because the
12:38whole team was riding on his back.
12:40He was clearly injured.
12:41He was hurt.
12:42He couldn't perform.
12:43Right.
12:43I don't believe it was entirely the injury that led to that performance, but we can debate
12:48that.
12:48And I'm not saying every person that's 23 years old is the same.
12:52I'm saying that there are certain players now that come into the big leagues and they
12:57require everything to be more perfect than the generation or generations preceding them.
13:05But even Wiggy said he played with a guy who's like that.
13:07I mean, Wiggy's not from this new generation.
13:09Are you guys not hearing me?
13:11I'm not saying it's never existed before.
13:12That's what Dana and Tomlinson's one from the old generation.
13:15Of course, and his teammate Phillip Rivers played through a massive injury in that same
13:18game.
13:18The issue, though, is that you're just saying that it's part of this generation when it's
13:21been something that athletes have done.
13:23Certain athletes have done throughout time.
13:25Right.
13:25I think that there are more players in this new era that do it than players from older
13:31eras.
13:32I think the reason why it feels like there's more players in this generation is maybe because
13:40some of them in today's game understand what it takes to play for a long time.
13:48And they're more knowledgeable about their body, taking care of their body, what they need
13:54to do.
13:55Some of the modern medicine that you have from today, where back then, guys, you know,
13:59didn't know any better.
14:00So playing for a longer time vis-a-vis making more money matters more than winning.
14:06Well, I mean, maybe you want to play for a longer time and have more kicks at the can
14:09and win a championship.
14:10Maybe that's what it is.
14:11Yeah.
14:12I mean, if Larry Bird could go back and chain things, and I don't know, I'm just saying,
14:18wouldn't he maybe go like, all right, I played like an animal, but maybe I could have played
14:23four or five more years and won two or three more championships if I took care of my body.
14:29I believe he famously injured the back while redoing his parents' driveway, I believe.
14:36It was sealed beautifully.
14:38Yeah.
14:39Perfect.
14:39You know how they used to have the people who drove around and offered to reseal your
14:44driveway for a hundred bucks or whatever?
14:46Yeah.
14:46He did that for his parents, and that's when he hurt his back.
14:50Bird was out there with the tower himself, with the little machine, with the, uh.
14:53Oh, yeah.
