On Friday's edition of Felger and Mazz, the guys reacted to the news of the Red Sox calling up their top prospect, Payton Tolle. While discussing the move, Mazz made the point that the team is taking a huge risk, and should be praised for it.

00:00while the call screen populates we give opening takes that was jared karabas
00:03on uh tuesday wednesday whatever day that was on the baseball hour talking about tonight's
00:09starting pitcher for the boston red sox and that's where i think maz would like to begin
00:13with his opening take yep so payton toley has been called up he'll face paul skeins tonight
00:18at fenway park and just a a quick little detour here on paul skeins because he's been talked
00:23about a lot by baseball fans let me just tell you what i think paul skeins is and i said this to
00:28murray yesterday paul skeins is the josh allen of major league baseball that's what he is and i
00:34think there are lots of comparisons even i don't want to say they look alike but they have a similar
00:37sort of silhouette a similar size mustache celebrity girlfriend like the whole thing that they are to
00:44me and this guy is as dynamic a performer as josh allen is in the nfl and payton toley gets to face
00:52him in his first major league game i think people need to understand how rare this is
00:57for the red sox i am trying to find out unsuccessfully i might add the last time the
01:05red sox brought a guy to the big leagues as a starting pitcher to uh and not just as a uh
01:13you know sort of emergency type situation i mean i think this is them giving him the chance to win
01:20the spot in the rotation i can't think of the last time this happened mike you might have to go back to
01:25roger clemens to find a guy that made fewer than 20 starts in the minor leagues and got to the big
01:31leagues as quickly as payton told you remember clemens's first start i don't i don't but i was
01:36looking it up and millican just did it for me because uh because i said i remember clemens got here fast
01:41and i think it was like 18 starts in the minor leagues for clemens before he got here the only other
01:47guy i can think of and i looked up a bunch of others there was a guy back in 2004 named abe alvarez
01:54who came up from the minor leagues and pitched for the red sox but it was because they had a double
02:00header they needed a starter his turn had fallen they brought him up i think he had less than clemens
02:05he was a warm body and it was an emergency exactly right but they sent him right back to the minor
02:09leagues murray and honestly we never heard from him again so you mean ai doesn't have this
02:13not that i could see and so i just think that this is this is so rare and i commend the red sox for it
02:22this kid feels like an outlier and so i'm eager to see him pitch it's a good matchup it's a good
02:28you know it's a good opportunity to watch the ball game even if you don't watch it for skeins alone
02:33but now you have two reasons and i'll just say one more thing mass live had a photo of peyton
02:40totally today that makes him look like he ate david wells he's not that fat he's just a big d6 six
02:47mass no no no i didn't say that that's what he is i said the photo makes him look like they pulled
02:53him out of a bear league like he's 55 years old and he swallowed david wells whole like he took him
03:00down in one bite so i'm eager to see what this kid looks like the other pictures of him don't make
03:06him look like that but i you know this is one of those that the you know the red sox are clearly in
03:11a spot where they think they can catch the division they think they're going to be in the playoffs and
03:16this is a it's an aggressive move for them to make a move like this this late in the year go ahead
03:22murray uh nine days away from the patriots season opener and some ominous reporting on the gimpy
03:28hamstring today of one christian gonzalez courtesy of jeff how of the athletic uh this is the quote from
03:34his story as for the standout cornerback christian gonzalez his hamstring injury has been complicated
03:40and it has been difficult to establish a date for his return complicated complicated what when the
03:49patriots get back to practice on monday it will be exactly five weeks to the day from when gonzalez left
03:56practice with that injury july 28th in that span of time five weeks we've had jordan schultz tweeting
04:02that the injury would not impact his week one availability uh we had mike vrabel earlier this
04:07week speaking in some vrabelese saying quote in my own personal experience you can only ride the
04:13bike so long or do the stair climb or something you actually have to come out here put pads on run
04:18and get into football conditioning remember we talked about that earlier in the week and i know
04:21you found that quote kind of curious mike uh you even have former center and i wish he was still on
04:26the team david andrews tweeting around 11 o'clock this morning when do we start to worry about
04:30christian gonzalez for week one hamstrings can be tough you definitely want him healthy because you
04:35don't want him to be out there for two weeks then down another six but it's a little concerning yeah
04:39you think it's concerning this is their best player on either side of the ball and frankly as of right now
04:44i don't think anyone else is even close with this kind of reporting of a complicated hamstring injury
04:52and difficult to establish a date for his return you can forget about seeing him against the raiders on
04:57september 7th and from there you better hope we all better hope that the complication part of this
05:03is just a slow recovery and not christian gonzalez determining that he is going to pull a sauce
05:08gardener last year in the jets and then half-ass in the season for a business decision because that's
05:12what he did he sucked last year but it was a business decision because he ended up getting paid so
05:15either way this is terrible news for them and might also be further reason as to why why mike
05:21rabel's been so testy the last couple of weeks it's not over you know he just doesn't realize he has a
05:25shaky overall roster it's his best players not going to be available for kickoff okay we've got
05:31toll tonight totally totally totally tonight patriots uh coming up in a week plus they have
05:38released jabril peppers that was a surprise move today you can weigh in on that i'm going to have
05:43more on the michael parsons trade uh and my take is going to be more cowboy centric because i think
05:48once again jerry jones has proven himself to be one of the great phonies in all of professional sports
05:55way up there uh mount maybe mount rushmore of phonies in pro sports the bullcrap he was spinning
06:03last night and trying to justify this trade was even by his standards a little much but we'll get
06:09to that later on in the program i want to start with some phone calls and here's something we didn't
06:13hit on that's also coming up this long weekend rick in the car lead us off go ahead hey guys i know
06:19that college football technically kicked off last weekend but this weekend on monday night might be the
06:24most watched regular season college football game of all time unc bill belichick and i am so excited
06:32for this there's two things can happen one unc is fighting for a playoff spot and belichick's going
06:39to get a coaching job next year or he crashes and burns and the belichick jordan experience is over
06:46and i'm gonna stop you jim murray why are you making noises i mean most watched college football
06:50game of all time did he a little much he might be young he might not have remembered that championship
06:54game between texas and usc i think that might be it i know it's one of the best games i've ever
06:58watched but please like people will watch this yeah because belichick's involved but most watch
07:02that's crazy and it's funny you just mentioned that term too when you're talking about jerry jones
07:06the biggest phonies of all time phonies that belong on mount rushmore yeah put billy big boobs on that too
07:13that mount rushmore fraud phony i he can't lose enough down there and i hope he falls flat in his
07:18face that's why i'm tuning in for spite i hope he loses i hope they lose i hope he doesn't win a
07:22game this whole season and he's not coming back to the nfl he should get that no one wants him get
07:26that out of your head right away that ship has sailed what if he goes 10 and 1 and goes to the
07:30final four no i doubt it he'll stay in college no one wants to deal with this guy anymore
07:35ryan in connecticut if he goes 10 and 1 to the final four they might go ahead ryan
07:39hey guys thanks for the good call mike on your baseball team are you how confident are you going
07:46into the playoffs are they going to go out with another whimper or how do you feel about we're
07:50going to win the world series this year but not for the reason i said miserowski is not going to be
07:54i was wrong about miserowski i'm not sure he's ready if i were them i'd use him out of the bullpen
07:58but you don't need any more brewer talk they're winning the world series
08:01is that it i got more in the packers too if you want it by the way i i talk about um lines
08:10intersecting red sox fans should be on your side this weekend the brewer the brewers are in toronto
08:15so you need the brewers this week bostonians whether you like it or not you are sided with felger
08:20and we are not in a good place our closer shut down i don't think jackson shurio is coming back yet
08:26it's soon but i don't think he's back yet peralta's pitching tonight though probably that's our you
08:31know not our ace woodruff is probably our ace but peralta's leads the majors and wins uh but we're
08:36kind of listing we're getting all banged up and uh we're in this trouble playing 19 games in 18 days
08:42or something so we're not in the best place but we're winning the world series this year this is the
08:47year uh dalton and deadham go ahead dalton hey guys how we doing uh so yeah just quick thing on
08:53totally uh guys i think this is like the most exciting the red sox had a prospect coming up
08:58pitching in about 10 years you can talk about buck coats you can talk about lester but this kid
09:04he he fits he fits all the boxes i mean he pumps a fastball in there about 99 uh people are comparing
09:10his change up to johan santana in his early days and that's that's saying something but um i'm telling
09:16you right now this is this is the matchup of the year him and schemes and i can't wait to see it and
09:22this this is i'll be eating my popcorn tonight boys for sure okay babe why maz is making now maz
09:26is making noises why yeah so look let's you know the the change up to johan santana keep it in your
09:32pants okay the the thing with toley right now is he's primarily just a fastball guy he has some
09:39secondary stuff that he is quote unquote working on but he's not consistent enough what makes him
09:45unique is his size and the fact that he releases the fastball so close to the plate he's got you
09:51know they say great extension so uh the as a result you know the the gun readings on his fastball
09:58gonna be in the mid 90s but he lets it go like seven feet from from the actual rubber or something
10:03like that very much like mizorowski and mizorowski faced skeins month ago banged out the huge day
10:09and so i like i know the feeling i would say this though um the skeins have been in the i'm sorry
10:15mizorowski had been in the majors for a month or so when he faced him is this in any way a mistake
10:20uh sure you could absolutely look at it as that yes and i say i commend the red sox because
10:25i recognize this thing could explode in a ball of fire but i think he's their best option right now
10:31and try to catch lightning in a bottle and this by the way is going to be a little bit of a
10:36referendum if not a big one on breslow mike they you know they didn't get any pitching help at the
10:41deadline in terms of starters they were raving about their depth early in the year and it ran out
10:46on them and now they have to turn to this kid this is not something they would normally do not
10:51in a million years jordan dorchester on uh the jabril peppers release go ahead jordan
10:56hey guys so a couple months ago you saw four big name safeties in free agency go to other teams
11:03you know javon holland cameron bynum hufanga justin reed all in their mid to late 20s
11:08the patriots knew duggar and peppers were not scheme fits and they didn't go after a safety in the
11:14free agent marker when they really could have upgraded the position and now they have
11:16duggar who's injured and not a fit pettis who's special teams woodson who's a rookie and hawkins
11:21is a career backup another mismanagement of free agency by this front office so this is a move maz
11:27that is a little frustrating do you think jabril peppers is not one of their best 53 players oh no
11:32he's definitely one of their best 53 he's one of their best 25 players yeah yeah i but what i think
11:37we know now for sure is that duggar uh duggar or peppers was gone they you know and we said this a
11:44lot of people said this not just us they're both strong safeties neither one of those guys is a free
11:50safety so they had two strong safeties back there they went for the guy with a bigger contract and
11:55tried to get rid of him and that didn't work so now they took the guy with the lesser contract and
11:59cut him they were cutting a strong safety either way so it's just money i mean okay i think so
12:05they aren't system fits fine but look at the last 15 players on your roster it's a joke
12:13that you blew peppers is not you know is in that group so why is he because they weren't going to
12:19pay both duggars and peppers i know peppers has their reporting is that it was four point something
12:244.3 and guaranteed money left which the pats are on the hook for he was guaranteed 2.5 on his base
12:31salary i don't know where the other 1.8 is coming from i mean there's a diverged roster bonus
12:35or something that was guaranteed deferred signing bonus that was guaranteed be that as it may
12:39they're saving a couple bucks on him they they you know he had some incentives and as usual some per
12:44game roster bonuses that they won't have to pay so they're saving i don't know a couple million bucks
12:49on peppers is that why he's not here i don't know they don't have enough talent on the roster
12:54cutting good players is the bottom line exactly so he doesn't fit your system but okay what who are you
13:02putting in there and don't you think maz that peppers was also a more effective player than
13:07duggar at the end here at least you know last year the last couple yes i mean and again i would say in
13:13the run game i you know i don't he was a tone setter he was big time yeah big time but i don't you know
13:19i i don't remember much in the passing game maybe i'm wrong with that like again he's a guy that hits
13:25he's a guy that is physical and as you said a tone setter but i don't i don't never looked at him
13:30he's a pass game player
13:31you
