03:44From more kind of serious mental health things to just making an absolute fool of myself.

05:07I was like, no.

05:09Then you went back through everything, eh?
05:12Because you get so many messages all the time.
05:14I never saw them.
05:15It never seemed like anything weird.

05:17And so I looked up his username on my profile.
05:20And when I opened it, I just saw all of these messages that I hadn't seen before.
05:30I've definitely had some weird messages in the past.
05:34You get people asking for feet pics and like really weird stuff.
05:39This was so different.
05:42It was only a space of like a couple of weeks between when he sent his first message to the
05:47ones that were saying how obsessed he is with me and that he can't stop thinking about
05:51me.
05:52And just that really quick progression was like, what is going on?
05:59My flatmates and me tried to like research everything we could to find anything out about this guy.
06:06And he just kind of was almost like erased from the internet.
06:11He had a locked Instagram profile.
06:15He had to really zoom up and he had like sunglasses on.
06:18So we didn't even really know what he looked like.
06:20We can't find anything about him except that he literally lives on the other side of the world.
06:25In the Netherlands.
06:27I think he told you that he was going to come to New Zealand and he wanted to find me.
06:34But I feel like I was still so blase about it.
06:37Like because it was overseas.
06:39There's no way that he was like coming to New Zealand.

06:43And then I think within like 48 hours, he had messaged again saying I booked the flights.

08:13I was so terrified.
08:15And then because everyone else was trying to stay calm, I felt like I was screaming into a void of
08:22like, this is really bad.
08:26I don't, I don't know what to do.
08:31I was like, look, there's nothing to be gained from freaking out.
08:35He's either found us or he hasn't.

17:14the other side of the world that was messaging me about his obsessions with me um sending some very
17:18scary messages and he then flew all the way to New Zealand to physically find me it was terrifying and
17:24the reason that I'm posting thank you for sharing your personal story with us jazz I too was stalked
17:30for months in 2010 by an ex-boyfriend he traveled across the country and eventually kidnapped me my case
17:37was highly publicized and I always stated stalking was the beginning and the results that could have been
17:44mitigated had we criminalized this behavior there was nowhere to go no one to hear it pushed me out
17:54and he's screaming at me you know he's like you slap you slap I'm gonna teach you a lesson I

18:01getting knocked out and then coming back into consciousness Tessa's story was it was completely

18:32Nortessa thank you thank you for having me now we have a bit of a sensitive topic today today's
18:39conversation includes kidnapping violence and trauma but there will be no nudity no unfortunately
18:54I grew up on Great Barrier Island and I was a little maniac I spent a lot of time outside
19:02and I really
19:04loved being in nature and I loved creating and singing and it was a beautiful upbringing there
19:27it's a small community so everyone is just there for each other doesn't matter how long you've been gone
19:35you're considered a barrier right it's always got such a special place in my heart
19:53welcome home I believe to have you back I've already cried once today I can't even cry
20:04yeah lots of memories good day not so good yeah it's been over a decade since I was stalked and
20:25eventually kidnapped so in 2010 my mum was renting a property and her shower smashed and a glazier arrived to
20:37come and fix it
20:40and she got talking to him and thought you'd be great for my daughter I came over to the house
20:51and met him
20:54I was 18 and he was maybe only a year older than me I was young and a little bit
21:02boy crazy
21:05he was handsome and had a charming smile and I didn't look for much more than that at the time
21:22I thought okay I'll let this person take me out on a date
21:28um yeah and that proceeded to haunt me for over a decade
21:45he did fix the shower it was probably the only good thing he really did
22:04on our second date we were sitting in his car
22:11and he kissed me and we proceeded to make out in his car like teenagers do
22:22and then the next thing I know he was holding me down and giving me this horrific hickey
22:38I felt like I had been branded
22:43he said to me in that moment he was like you're mine now
22:54this person had come into my life and it was like a tornado
23:00this is what we should do this is what we should do I need to be around you I want
23:04to be around you
23:05and I felt like I couldn't hear myself think
23:08it was within weeks that we were living together
23:13I thought if it didn't work out that I could just ask him to leave and that would be fine
23:19um boy was I wrong
23:41following the conversation on the hill
23:46Greg began reaching out to me online the way I knew how to describe it at the time was that
23:52he had a crush on me for the first years they were pretty inconsistent he sent me messages saying
24:02I'm not trying to date you by the way but if you wanted to date me of course I'd want
24:06to
24:08often I'd get a message on Valentine's Day or when you'd see me walking around Wellington
24:15happy Valentine's Day I hope you got treated like the beautiful queen you are but I also hope not
24:19because that would mean you have a potential love interest but still hope it happened but just
24:22maybe from someone you aren't interested in romantically because I wish it was me okay bye
24:29there was one point he sent me a bunch of memes he clearly found a website that had a meme

24:35it yo dog I heard you like ignoring and blocking me so I made you some means to ignore before

24:41block me so you can ignore me and then block me they were so stupid during this time he used

25:08his face and mocked him with her friends does she know he'd do anything to be with her I thought
25:12she loved animals I just want my dad to be happy his messages weren't mean they were annoying they were
25:27invasive they were weird straight ahead get over Zeni and move on swerving off Greg the guy with
25:38the dog Toby keep trying even though she shows no interest while Greg's harassment was in his kind of
25:56love-bombing phase I didn't know where he lived it felt like he could be anywhere
26:09Wellington is this really unique landscape where it's just surrounded in hills and it felt like I was
26:16kind of trapped in this fishbowl it felt like everything was caving in on me I felt like anywhere I

26:42being observed every message I got over those years I just kind of put into this invisible bag on my

26:53it just kept getting heavier and heavier and heavier my anxiety slowly crept up and crept up and crept up
27:06I felt so anxious all the time
27:22everything in my life just kind of dimmed I was finding it really hard to leave my house and I
27:30found it really hard to get out of bed I started spending all day every day in my room
27:38I stopped hanging out with friends
27:44I was feeling really targeted but the thought of walking into a police station and showing them
27:51these memes made me cringe I could see them laughing in my face
28:03I definitely thought that if I could ignore it for long enough he'd stop
28:09I don't know why
28:13but his fixation just intensified throughout the years
28:21and I felt like I had no control over that
28:37I didn't sleep at all that night like what the hell does this mean
28:46the next morning I was due to be filming for a campaign that I was doing that was all about
28:51getting out with
28:52your friends and having fun and trying new things
28:54okay we have our hat with all of our options who's going to pick it out

36:58and then I looked in his eyes

37:09I said to my friend I have to go

37:31truly believed that he wouldn't come back after that
37:48when I heard him knock on that window two hours later I was like

37:57he stayed out there that whole night

38:02calling my name
38:03asking to be let in
38:06apologising

38:08saying he'll never do it again
38:11by the morning he'd just worn me down

38:23said that the issue was that we were living with other people

38:30it was all these other people that were causing this trouble
