Set in one of the oldest urban areas of Taipei city and inspired its traditional colours, the team at Republic Design have created a warm and elegant space using tones of earthy reds, grays, and light oak wood. The main design idea was to reduce the walking pathways and partitions between areas in order to create a more open fluid space. Moving the TV, dining, and kitchen areas along the one wall, separating and cleverly concealing the bedroom and bathroom, created a single long pathway in the middle of the apartment. The wall also contains a number of clever, custom made storage solutions including a utility brick wall with pieces that can open and fold up as needed as well as a compact foldable dining table. A mezzanine level, which doubles as a guest room and extra storage, was added to the kitchen ceiling and is accessed via a compact foldable staircase hidden in the ceiling.

00:02We were influenced by the traditional colors of Taipei, the earthy red of the temples which
00:09creates a sense of warmth. We kept it simple by using other earthy tones of red with beech,
00:16wood and white for the rest of the apartment. My name is Chris Chu,
00:22I'm an interior designer and co-founder of Republic Design in Taipei City, Taiwan.
00:37The apartment is located in Datong district in Taipei City. Datong district is one of the oldest urban area in
00:47Taipei City which is surrounded by various old school buildings including the Confucian Temple and there is also one of
00:56the largest park in Taipei City which is called Yuan Shan Park.
01:00The building is basically for residential purpose.
01:06Our client is a business owner who currently live with a cat and she often travels for working purposes so
01:15when she is in Taipei, she does not require a large space.
01:20The apartment was a large studio with high ceilings before the renovation, the bathroom sink was separate from the bathroom
01:28and the bathroom itself was only 1.6 square meters.
01:34We decided to rearrange the bathroom, kitchen and storage. A standard kitchen for day-to-day cooking and the dining
01:42area to eat and work at.
01:44As the ceiling in the kitchen is high, we were able to create a mezzanine on top.
01:50As you step into the apartment, you are immediately in the living room. As the client lives here alone, it
01:57was not necessary to have a separate entrance area.
02:01With this in mind, we created a utility brick wall. It can open and fold up when needed in order
02:09to handcoat or other items.
02:13The TV wall extends along all the way to the dining area and kitchen.
02:17We wanted to organise the TV, the brick wall, the dining and the kitchen all along this wall.
02:24This creates a long pathway in the middle of the apartment.
02:30There is a chair by Dread with an art piece done by our studio which sits against the wall.
02:38There is a small shelf that is built into the wall under the TV.
02:43We painted it in an earthy red colour which provides a bit of pop against the wood finished wall.
02:50As the TV is mounted above, this built-in shelf provides space for an Apple TV and sound books but
02:57does not take up any floor space.
03:01The dining area sits between two walls and contains upper and lower storage.
03:07The lower storage is finished in made dark red laminate.
03:11Not only does it match with the brick wall in the living room, but the surface is also easy to
03:17clean.
03:18It has pantry space and a spot for a microwave.
03:21The tabletop for the dining table partially sits on the storage and can be easily removed to free up space
03:28when it would not be needed.
03:31The kitchen size is enough for basic cooking as the client eats out most of the time.
03:38There is a single induction hob and a generous stainless sink.
03:42Above them is a range hood, some wide storage cabinets and a wide dishwasher.
03:49The balcony is at the end of the kitchen and also has space for the washing machine.
03:55There is a compact foldable staircase hidden in the ceiling of the mezzanine.
04:00The stairs are easy to pull down and climb up to the mezzanine area, which is planned for extra storage
04:07and a guest room.
04:12As the owner lives alone, the bedroom has everything she needs.
04:17There is a single bed and a wardrobe.
04:20And there is a grey full-length mirror which reflects the tiny room, creating an illusion of a bigger space.
04:31There is a small step up to the bathroom, which is behind a hidden door.
04:37The floor and half of the wall is terrazzo.
04:41At the back is a shower with windows made from glass window blocks.
04:47There are a couple of metal floating shelves in the shower that are thin and make the borders look like
04:53they are floating.
04:55The bathroom has a toilet and a wash basin with a mirror cabinet on top.
05:01Today in urban areas like Taipei, more and more people are choosing to live on their own.
05:08An existing apartment can be a more affordable option for the next generation in urban areas.
05:15We believe we could upgrade the quality of space after renovation,
05:20especially for those old buildings which contain cultural and historical value.
05:33some переж cheesy memories taking care of the space after renovation.
05:36We can say something because we have done a picture withюда.
